This is another BTS look at the conversations that take place among the 4th Cohort of the DCCJP program hosted by the ICA Council on Upper Cervical Care. Each month, we'll share a unscripted conversation among several of the docs ON location. This month, Dr. Cameron Bearder, Dr. John Stenberg, Dr. Al Cobb, Dr. Carissa Stallings, Dr. Luca O'Brien, and Dr. Dustin Dingus sat down to chat. Enjoy! Takeaways Understanding the complexities of neck anatomy is crucial for chiropractors Further study and research are necessary to fully grasp the intricacies of the neck Imaging, such as MRI, is important for understanding and managing patients' conditions Clinical application and correlation of multiple findings are essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment Technology and imaging centers can play a significant role in advancing understanding and improving patient outcomes Conebeam technology has changed the game in upper cervical chiropractic and there is a need to update policies and procedures accordingly. Upper cervical chiropractic is still relatively small in Europe and other parts of the world, but efforts are being made to create hubs and increase awareness. Mentorship and networking are crucial in the field of upper cervical chiropractic, and it is important to build relationships with other healthcare providers. Students and young doctors are more interested in getting good results and pushing the limits of upper cervical chiropractic rather than focusing solely on specific techniques. There is a need for better communication and collaboration with other healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive the best care possible. Students interested in upper cervical chiropractic should take the initiative to learn more about the field and reach out to experienced practitioners for guidance and mentorship. The DCCJP program provides a deep dive into the craniocervical junction and is essential for anyone working in the field of upper cervical chiropractic. The Anti-Fragile Chiropractic Club Challenge is a fun way to challenge oneself physically and connect with others in the chiropractic community.

Mile High Chiro Podcast

The very special guest on this episode of The Mile High Podcast is Dr. Jane Brewer. There are more and more home-grown heroes in the Mile High State, and it's incredible how Colorado has become a hub for Chiropractic and chiropractors dedicated to the principles. Dr. Jane is one of those. As a mountain biker and skier, Dr. Jane first got into chiropractic to address her persistent hip and back pain. As her body began to heal from the physical injuries she began to notice that other health issues dissipated as well. She no longer suffered from chronic respiratory issues that had plagued her for her entire life. Once she understood the science and philosophy of chiropractic care, it became the obvious choice for her life's work. She returned to school, 11 years after obtaining her undergraduate degree in Art, to get her Doctor of Chiropractic degree. She graduated from Life University in Atlanta. While learning traditional chiropractic techniques in school, she gravitated toward Upper Cervical Chiropractic. Dr. Jane is among an elite group of fewer than 100 chiropractors in the world who holds this distinction of the highest level of training and specialization in Upper Cervical Chiropractic. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class. When she's not in the office and doesn't have her head in a research journal, she loves playing outside on her mountain bike, skis, or on her own two feet with her husband, Wes. They have two very dog-like cats, always drink good coffee, and enjoy sharing quality time with friends and family. Stay tuned for these episodes each month as we continue throughout the Diplomate in Chiropractic Craniocervical Junction Procedures program over the next 3 years. This is the FIRST and ONLY behind the scenes look at how the doctors grow through this process. Takeaways The Diplomate Program is a higher level of study and specialization in chiropractic, demonstrating advanced knowledge and proficiency in a specific topic. Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort experienced when confronted with conflicting ideas, and it is important to approach it with an open mind and allow for further exploration and understanding. The practical application of chiropractic knowledge should focus on improving patients' health and function, rather than solely on structural alignment. The upper cervical community can benefit from further development in the areas of science, art, and philosophy to enhance clinical outcomes and understanding. The philosophy of chiropractic is stable but may require advancements based on new scientific discoveries. Advancements in science have significantly grown in the field of chiropractic over the years. Challenges exist in improving techniques due to the influence of personal experiences and the resistance to change. The fallacy of mastery assumes that one's current approach is correct, even if it may be incorrect. Openness to change and willingness to adapt techniques based on compelling scientific evidence is essential for progress. Learning from others and engaging in conversations with peers can lead to personal growth and new perspectives. Documenting thoughts and experiences allows for reflection and continuous improvement in chiropractic practice. Vicki RushVicki Rush is married to Dr. Perry Rush, an upper cervical chiropractor specializing in the Blair Technique. For more than 20 years, she worked as her husband's chiropractic assistant. She ran the office, he did the chiropractic, and it was a good balance. They were living in Spartanburg. Getting to see the miracles in people's lives firsthand was incredible. On their first date, Vicki told Dr. Rush about some health problems she had been experiencing and he taught her all about chiropractic. The next day she saw her medical doctor and told him she had been getting sick a lot with a sore throat and headaches. She had a long list of symptoms. She was diagnosed with a thyroid condition and told to see a specialist. She decided to try Upper Cervical first. She went to Dr. Gary Harbit on Dr. Rush's advice. After one adjustment, the vertigo was gone, the swelling in her throat was gone, her voice came back, and she no longer had a headache. One of Vicki's favorite stories is about a little girl. Her mother brought her and her twin sister in for care. The twin sister got one adjustment. She was fine, she was happy, she was healthy, but the other girl was completely limp in her mother's arms. Dr. Rush took some X-rays. When he looked at the pictures, he just said, “Oh my”. He gave her an adjustment, and changes started immediately. They were able to sit her up and talk to her. Within 2 days, she was playing on the playground at school. Later, she fell off of something and went completely limp again. After going to their regular doctor again without any change, they brought her back to Dr. Rush. He adjusted and she could move again. This happened over and over again. When Vicki had her first son, he got sick with pneumonia-like symptoms. She didn't get much sleep the first four months because he couldn't breathe unless she was holding him up. They took him to Dr. Sherman Lyle, who showed Dr. Rush how to adjust a baby's neck. After one adjustment, their baby was breathing normally. They all slept that night. The baby never had another problem.Another story that Vicki recalls is about one of her own four children, a son who was about ten years old at the time. He had fallen asleep on a chair, and his head tipped off the edge of the chair. Vicki noticed that he had jerked in his sleep, and it didn't look good. She moved over to him, and I shook him a little, "Wake up. Wake up," and he didn't wake up. She realized he was completely stiff and unconscious. She called for her husband. He moved him to the floor and checked him. The position he had fallen asleep in had thrown him out of alignment. Dr. Rush immediately adjusted him, and his whole body relaxed, and he was fine. There were no repercussions.Vicki didn't give up her own dream along the way. She went to college online and became a professional genealogist. Now, she has been tracing family trees for more than 40 years.Vicki had this to say about watching chiropractic from the sidelines, “Meeting people in the chiropractic community, you find joy, and you find happiness. When somebody becomes a chiropractor, they get to smile every day and they get to provide miracles for people everyday. Every week there was a new miracle to share with our chiropractic friend across town. Miracles, not just nice stories, but true life-changing events.”To contact Ruth, go to https://www.blairclinic.comruth@blairclinic.comhttps://www.facebook.com/rutelin

Upper cervical instability (UCI) occurs quite commonly in the mild form and more rarely in the severe form in those with symptomatic generalized joint hypermobility (S-GJH).  Both can be impactful and are frequently missed.  An international team of physical / physiotherapy clinicians and a S-GJH expert rheumatologist recently published expert consensus recommendations for screening, assessing and managing patients with UCI associated with S-GJH.  Bendy Bodies sat down with first author, Leslie Russek, DPT, PhD, to discuss this important paper.   Hypermobility (too much range of motion) is different from instability (difficulty controlling motion at the joints).  UCI, upper cervical instability, means that the muscles and nerves lack the ability to appropriately control movement at the joint and sense where the joint is in space.  When UCI is severe it can be debilitating.  Except in the most extreme forms of UCI, conservative (ie: non-surgical) therapies are usually considered first.  Improving joint stability is the goal and Dr. Russek explains what patient factors are important to consider in determining treatment strategy.   Dr. Russek explains the difference between “highly suggestive” and “common” symptoms as well as musculoskeletal UCI vs neurological UCI.  She describes the three levels of irritability and how those should be approached in clinical practice.  Yellow and red flags in the history and the physical examination are addressed. Whether you are someone who suspects upper cervical instability or treats them, this is an episode you will not want to miss.   Learn more here.  Hashtags: #CervicalSpineInstability #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #ChronicIllness #SpineInstability #ZebraSurvivor #ChronicPain #CervicalSpinalFusion #InvisibleIllness #Hypermobility #SpineHealth #hEDS #EDSawareness #ChronicPainWarrior #SpineFusion #ButYouDontLookSick #Instability #HSD

Taylor discusses the outdated terms and beliefs that still occur in research and clinical practice surrounding things such as chiropractic subluxations vs true subluxations, posture, and alignment. We then discuss medical gaslighting for hEDS along with examples of both under and over-medicalization of this condition. We then discuss strength training for this population, and Taylor finishes the discussion by dispelling a few more myths surrounding those diagnosed with hEDS.  Russek et al, 2023 Paper More about Taylor: Taylor's Website Taylor's IG Taylor's TikTok --- More about us:  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/e3rehab  Website: https://e3rehab.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/e3rehab/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/E3Rehab --- Sponsors: Minimalist Footwear: https://www.vivobarefoot.com/ (Discount code: E3Rehab15 for 15% off) VALD: www.vald.com --- @dr.samspinelli @dr.surdykapt @tony.comella @chrishughen --- This episode was produced by Matt Hunter.

Valerie Kumkov Hill Valerie has lived in Lubbock since 1969. Her father came here initially to teach mathematics at Texas Tech. She ended up going to Texas Tech University and has been there ever since. She majored in Art and had a second degree in Dance. She taught in the public school system for 24 years. She has always been mindful of health and nutrition. Currently, in retirement, Valerie teaches yoga to seniors.Valerie's husband was the first one to come to the Blair Chiropractic Clinic after doing some research. He'd been having some major neck problems even before they were married. It must've been sometime in the late '70s; Doctor Blair was there at the time. Her husband, as a child, had had some surgeries and physical problems that actually resulted from a childhood case of polio. While working at a bookstore, Valerie started noticing she was getting stiff and tense in her neck and shoulders. She then started seeing Doctor Blair herself. She started seeing results herself, and after their children were born, they became patients of the clinic as well. By then, Doctor Addington had taken over. He checked the kids out over the years, and they had minor adjustments. Then their son was involved in a car accident as a passenger in high school, and they got him in right away. No one was hurt badly, but their son seemed to recover much more quickly from that. The same happened with her daughter, as an adult, when she was t-boned by a drunk driver in her truck. They immediately brought her in again and had her checked out. She'd had some hip problems because of the way the seatbelt jerked her, and she had some adjustments done in her lower back and pelvis as well.Valerie has noticed as she's gotten older that you often don't feel better right away or for a few days after getting an adjustment. When you come back a week later, things have smoothed out, and it was just her body reacting to being aligned again and the muscles having to pull slightly. The first line of care is to run a graph on the cervical vertebra and see how things are doing. Then if there's a problem, take care of it as quickly as possible so that it doesn't become a chronic problem. She has noticed that over the years, She's had fewer and fewer adjustments. She can't even remember the last time she had her neck adjusted because it has been maintained so well. While teaching yoga at the community center, Valerie adjusts poses that need to be adjusted for age, and they work on things like getting down and up from a chair or the floor. Taking a long time to warm up, the first thing they do after breathing is to start gently moving their neck muscles, the very top of the spine, and then gradually warming the spine up. Her mission is to let people get over that fear of yoga and not be intimidated.Valerie wrote a children's book during Covid called Clive the Lonely Llama. It was published by Wild Lark Books, a bookstore in Downtown Lubbock. Here is Valerie's teaching schedule:Yoga classes: M, T, TH 9:30 at Maxey Community CenterSeated Yoga: T, TH 10:45Fitness/light aerobics: Wed. 9:45To see more of Valerie's work or to purchase her art:ShopView artTo contact Ruth, go to https://www.blairclinic.comruth@blairclinic.comhttps://www.facebook.com/rutelin

One of my client friends, Kristen, called me up and was ecstatic with the results she was getting from visiting a very specialized NUCCA Chiropractor, Dr. Jean Pierre in Boca Raton Florida. NUCCA, which stands for ‘National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association, is a radically different approach to healthcare. It focuses on making a very specific and gentle adjustment of the Atlas vertebrae (the bone at the bottom of your head), bringing it back to its proper position, and restoring balance to your entire body. Kristen had severe traumatic brain injuries and found relief and healing by adding NUCCA treatments to her healing regimen. Besides traumatic brain injuries, NUCCA can also help people with migraines, tinnitus, high blood pressure, ADHD, ear infections, standard neck and back pain, and more. There are only about 300 NUCCA Chiropractors so this is a newly emerging field that has already shown great results in patients like Kristen and in clinical trials. Dr. Jean Pierre got into NUCCA after finding major relief from 20 years of migraine headaches.
