Jonathan Hillis is the founder and caretaker of Cabin, a network of co-living spaces which link up and vet members in other communities via blockchain technology. His "neighborhood" of intentional living is in beautiful Texas Hill Country an hour outside of Austin, where he lives with friends in a hub-and-spoke model of private accommodation surrounding communal social spaces. He's the former CTO of Coinbase, and you can see how his tech background influences his obsession with scalability (we talk about Metcalf's Law, and the optimum size of "one sauna teams") as well as the non-financial elements of blockchain to that end. It actually reminds me a bit of Neil Stephenson's Franchise-Organized Quasi-National Entities or "burbclaves" in Snow Crash. Cabin strikes me as a kind of libertarian commune (though neither Hillis nor myself ever uses the term). It's big scattered geographic network of modular co-ops you can plug into and out of. Vetting community members is a big thing in communes, and Cabin relies on blockchain technology and somethin akin to personal Yelp reviews to allow people to skip up from Austin, TX to like-minded communities in Santa Fe or Portland, or wherever. He joins to discuss his model, and what day-to-day life is like living in an intentional co-living community.

Now, even though Cliffy and I officially stopped playing together in 2006, we have never stopped supporting each other and getting back together when the stars aligned. Last year, in fact, we played a fun acoustic show together for Record Store Day at Forever Changes in Phoenixville, and we also got loud for the first time in a long time at the sold out IKE reunion show at MilkBoy in Philadelphia in May.The roots of our 3+ decade friendship go way back to our younger days in Delaware, where I first encountered Cliff playing around Newark in on of his first bands - The Name - while I was writing on filthy bar floors and wearing toilet seats around my neck as the front man of the Beat Clinic, the band that would later morph into the Caulfields.We continued to cross paths as his musical journey progressed in bands like Mystery Machine, Tisra Til, and Starbelly. The opportunity to play the first International Pop Overthrow festival in Los Angeles in 1998 put Cliff and me onstage together for the first time and we kept on rockin' until the end of 2006, which  was a tumultuous year for Cliff on a personal level. He lost both his parents that year and made the decision to part ways with IKE to pursue his own path. And the result of that decision has yielded a stupendous catalog of music, which scratches any power pop itch you may have.We met up in early January for a weekday hang at The Local in his longtime adopted hometown of Phoenixville, PA and had the kind of relaxed, familiar conversation that only two people who traveled the country in a van can have.I hope you enjoy our conversation!!

Yda Hillis Addis (c.1857-unknown) was an American writer in the California literary scene. She was the first American person to translate traditional Mexican stories into English. This week on Cultural Manifesto, celebrate Women's History Month by learning about the women pioneers of Hoosier music, including Vivian Carter, Dena El Saffar, Mary Byrne, Priscilla Mclean, Margaret Hills and Anna Mae Winburn. Vivian Carter was a legendary disc jockey and co-founder of Gary, Indiana's Vee Jay Records. Vee Jay released hit songs by artists including The Impressions, The Dells, Gladys Knight, John Lee Hooker, and Gene Chandler. Vee Jay also issued significant jazz and gospel titles, including the first full-length LP by the Staple Singers, and Wayne Shorter's debut album as a leader. In February of 1963 Vee Jay became the first American record label to issue music from The Beatles. Vee Jay's release of ”Please Please Me” pre-dated The Beatles' first Capitol Records release by a year. Mary Byrne is the founder of Labyris, an influential feminist lesbian bar that operated in Downton Indianapolis from 1978-1984. During the 1980s, Byrne also served as director of the National Women's Music Festival in Bloomington, Indiana. Byrne's work creating stages for women performers in Indiana was unprecedented at the time, and remains a significant achievement in the history of Indiana music. Anna Mae Winburn was raised in Kokomo, Indiana. Winburn gained international notoriety as the bandleader and vocalist for the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, a trailblazing multi-racial, all female big band that was active from 1937 to 1949.  The multi-instrumentalist and composer Dena El Saffar is the founder of Salaam, a Bloomington-based Middle Eastern music ensemble. The music of Salaam draws from El Saffar's Iraqi heritage. For over 30 years, Salaam have educated audiences around the country about the music and culture of Iraq.  Kokomo, Indiana's Margaret Hillis was an influential figure in American choral music and a trailblazing pioneer for women in classical music. Hillis is best remembered as the founder and director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, she led the ensemble from 1957 to 1994. Hillis' work with the chorus earned her nine Grammy Awards.  Composer Priscilla Mclean studied electronic music at IU Bloomington during the late 1960s. During the 1970s, Mclean created groundbreaking electronic music works at IU South Bend. Mclean was among the first Hoosier women to attain national notoriety in the world of electronic music.

Rib Hillis is an accomplished actor, host, producer, and model known for his work across primetime television, non-scripted reality television, and films spanning multiple genres. Hillis has worked on many notable titles, such as Ugly Betty, Two and a Half Men, and CSI, and has even showcased his talent as a designer on the Emmy-winning ABC show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. His most recent venture is INSP's The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger, in which he plays the titular legend, Jim Bridger himself. Paul Epstein is an Emmy-nominated producer, writer, and director known for his work across scripted, factual, and news television. Epstein has worked with many major TV networks and streamers, including Peacock, Discovery, and MSNBC, and has amassed approximately 40 credits across his 20-year-long career. He has worked on titles such as the true-crime documentary series Who Killed Robert Wone? and the factual drama series Into the Wild Frontier, the most-watched TV series on INSP in 2021.
