Wow, just Wow! You won't believe this conversation. I (Becky Berry) interview Linda Broenniman about her book “The Politzer Saga.” Imagine writing a history of your family that spans 300 years. Now imagine writing it after you found out that everything you thought you knew about your family was a lie. That's what Linda Broenniman did and that's what we talked about. After finding out unexpectedly that the father she thought was Catholic was instead Jewish, Linda decided to search for the truth about her family. She wanted to know more about her grandmother. The history that Linda shares in her book really does span 300 years – that's 8 generations. Not only that, she's included family trees, photographs, and other materials documenting the life of her family in Hungary. We talk about what it was like to find out that what you thought you knew about your family wasn't true and that the truth included the journey of Jews in Hungary for 300 years (I know I keep writing 300 years, but it's mind boggling – and powerful). Discovering family you didn't even know you had. Finding out your mother was a hero of Israel for hiding Jews fleeing the holocaust during World War II. One of the most striking themes in the book is the picture it paints of what it was like to be Jewish in Europe over 300 years. Linda's work highlights the recurring cycles of prosperity, prosecution, and banishment that defined the life of Jews during this time. I love that, at the beginning of each chapter, Linda tells us the familial relationship to her of the she's writing about. So, when she shares that one of her ancestors is the father of modern otology, she lists how many generations there are between her and him (the number of greats indicates the number of generations). We talk about how writing this book allowed Linda to connect with her Hungarian roots in a deep and meaningful way. It was a great conversation. The book is totally worth your time. And, by the way, her book is on sale at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. It's that important (emphasis mine). Thanks in Advance for your help: I hope you enjoy this episode. In this episode of Star Warsologies, we talk to Dr. Krista Noble about Eastern philosophical traditions and their similarities to the Force! Dr. Krista Noble joins us this episode on Star Warsologies to talk about her new book, One with the Force: 18 Universal Truths in Star Wars. Krista is a professor of Vedic studies and shares what she knows about George Lucas's connection to Eastern philosophies. We also cover the roles of the light and dark sides, supernatural abilities, and intuition. When characters say, "I've got a bad feeling about this," it's more than just a running joke, it's a philosophical moment! We hope you enjoy the episode and your next Star Wars rewatch with some more insights into the connections between the Jedi and real-life traditions. Show Links: You can buy Krista's book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.org! Check out Krista's website. Book summary: Why are the Star Wars films so popular? Of course, viewers love the characters, the plot, the music, and the special effects. However, there is a deeper reason why these films resonate with audiences: Star Wars contains universal truths—principles that are "true for all time, all places and all people." The same principles can be found in religions and philosophies throughout the world, including the Vedic tradition of ancient India, Buddhism, Taoism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Native American/First Nations beliefs. In One with the Force: 18 Universal Truths in Star Wars, Krista Noble explores these principles. She delves into a rich array of topics, from the Force to collective consciousness, and from enlightenment to immortality. Readers will see that the philosophy of the Jedi doesn't only apply "in a galaxy far, far away"; it is also highly relevant to everyday living. Like Luke Skywalker, we should all look within to discover the deepest truths of life, pursue our individual destinies, and strive to reach our full potential as human beings. In these ways, we can embody the wisdom of the Jedi. Advance praise: "An intriguing addition to Star Wars scholarship, which reveals the timeless substructure underpinning the space-age saga. If you watched the Star Wars movies with a feeling in your bones that you were seeing something unfold that was not merely the product of modern creative storytellers but something ancient and powerful, this book will tell you why." —Joe Holland, Instructor of Consciousness & Human Potential, Maharishi International University "One with the Force reveals why Star Wars touches the souls of its fans, showing that this iconic film series has much more to it than meets the eye. Noble's book expounds on the universal principles in Star Wars that inspire us and sustain the cosmos." —Marci Shimoff, #1 NY Times bestselling author of Happy for No Reason and Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul "This lucid study takes up a topic dear to my heart—the uses of fiction as a wisdom path—and traces essential principles from South Eastern and other traditions of wisdom and spirit appearing in Star Wars. The parallels mentioned by the author are evocative and even archetypal. The image of a path of spirituality emphasizing balance, experience, mindful action, and unity found in difference speaks strongly to our time of culture wars and increased questioning of traditional creeds." —Craig Chalquist, PhD, author of Soulmapper "Krista Noble's insightful presentation of the Star Wars trilogy highlights and magnifies the inherent nobility of this blockbuster film series, as she unearths and identifies age-old universal principles of life and living embedded in the story. Noble's book provides a happy hunting ground for exploring the profound truths of the world's cultural, spiritual, and religious traditions. A magnificent read!" —Dr. Judy Booth, retired faculty member at Maharishi International University, continuing to serve in an advisory capacity You can order James's crossword puzzle book now! Episode 025 - Are You Mad? Put On A Cape. Now You're SUPER MAD! Who is your favorite super hero? Iron man, Wonder Woman? The Wasp? Before you decide, listen to get to know "Super B"! Today we had a surprise visitor! (From another planet? Certainly from another reality.) Super B filled in when Brian was nowhere to be found. You're gonna wanna see this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/HOaYru_aQ-k Super B talked about how understanding real estate processes gets better results than just being upset and yelling about the situation. The more you know, the better you can serve your clients and your business. Don’t be mad. Learn more about how other real estate professionals do things and you can be a super hero to your client, too! SHOW NOTES 00:30 – Where’s Brian? Cate takes over while he is gone. BOOM! We meet Super B! 01:30 – One of Super B’s superpowers is showing up on time and reading a script. 02:45 – Song of the week: 03:50 – Facebook comment: An appraiser and inspector should only be paid if the transaction closes. VERY short sited and misinformed position. 04:45 – Appraisers are superheroes are their own circles. They are not out to “kill” a deal. There is usually more work for the appraiser when there is a “low” appraisal. 06:00 – There are a few bad apples and do a bad job. Inspectors, appraisers, lenders all have bad characters, but most of those individuals are great and do a great job. 06:25 – Cate: Appraisers and inspectors are to provide information. It may not be what you want to hear, but you must hear it, nonetheless. Good to know it now instead of later. Let’s focus on how you react to the information. 07:05 – Christian: Has Super B ever saved an appraiser? No need, they are superheroes. Superhero appraiser school with their tights…the required uniform. 08:00 – Learning the processes. Education is huge in understanding why appraisers, inspectors, etc. do what they do so you can work with them. Most of their processes are not to make you mad, but rather compliance issues or other requirements that they don’t control. 09:30 – So easy to criticize what others do when you don’t know what they do. Get educated. 09:43 – Cate: clients tend to get angry because they don’t know what to expect and the agents don’t spend the time to help their clients understand what is happening in their transaction. Educate your client so they don’t fly off the handle. 10:50 – Cate’s Side Note Tangent – angry people scare Cate. She has an anecdote about an experience up in Chicago when she was a bad driver. Super B is so sad he wasn’t there to save Cate. 13:15 – Super B reveals there is a Superhero HR department. Superhero issues with Super “girl” vs. Super “woman”. What does the manual say? 14:00 – Read #5: Be proactive, not reactive. Get ahead of problems, not wait for them to happen. Example: home inspections. 15:02 – Cate: Alarmist inspectors; remind your client that everything can be fixed. Hold their hand and ease their fears. 15:30 – Future episodes with Brian, the super appraiser. 15:45 – Pre- appraisal packet; Cate: get a sketch or measure square footage. If you knew the correct information, you would have a better valuation. 16:12 – Complaining about the process, especially on social media and in front of their clients. Makes agents look unprofessional. Your client is looking for your guidance and help. Your anger does not help. Drives your client out of control. Work toward solutions instead. 17:08 – Cate: take a step back; how can I make the situation better? Don’t act out of emotion, act out of education. 17:32 – Christian: Super B has nothing to complain about…especially not a scratchy mask. 17:55 – Super B quote of the week. Superhero meeting with The Wasp: “Be the hero they already know you to be.” 19:00 – As an agent, be the hero your client hired you to be. Do your super service. Be the hero they hired you to be. 19:28 – Super B’s phone is going off and he must fly off. A volcano is erupting in Hawaii. 20:30 – Brian shows back up after taking a call from an agent and is ready to record the podcast episode. He is completely unaware of the fact that Super B saved the day in his absence. Interesting that Brian missed Super B. Hmmm… 21:20 – Brian closes the episode: Don’t be mad, find solutions. Learn the processes. Be proactive, not reactive. Stop complaining. Be a professional. If you’re mad, put on a cape so you too can be SUPER MAD with Super B! 23:06 – Be a superhero for your client and be legendary! Today Charlotte and I analyze Ironman Canada race day in the tough conditions that athletes were presented with on the day. Being on the ground we witnessed many mistakes that led to much slower times and many DNF's. It's a tough course but many athletes still performed and they did so because they executed wisely and likely adjusted expectations to match the conditions of the day while still racing. As always no matter the result, there are many lessons that can lead us to become better athletes. Enjoy.
