Walk the Talk: Motivational Speeches

Spirit Levels

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2024 33:39

Just started up at the gym again? What's more likely to turbo-charge your session than a big scoop of pre-workout? Motivational speeches! This genre was first adopted by weightlifters who wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger screaming encouragement over rousing strings as they bench pressed, but it has since infiltrated the mainstream. Boiled down to its essence, the premise is: You're the underdog. Nobody knows how much you've suffered. Nobody cares either. So now you need to dominate. Absent fathers are a common theme, and so the narrator takes the form of Dad; sometimes Encouraging Dad, but more often Shouting Angrily from the Sidelines Dad. Their voices tend to be uncredited, though ministers, athletes and business leaders feature heavily. And Denzel Washington. Lots of Denzel Washington. These stand-in dads live in a labyrinth of playlists proliferating on Spotify and YouTube – so you can listen at the gym or watch stock-footage montages of people screaming in the rain on your laptop. This episode, Frank and Jenny talk to kettlebell sport athlete (and owner of Art Gym in Hobart) Eilish Kidd about how she went far down the rabbit hole of this genre. Boxer and ex-Special Forces guy Steven Body talks about how training in the military was designed to weed out anyone less than alpha, and how he loves pull-your-finger-out motivational speeches. We also talk to ultrarunner and performance coach Luke Tyburski about his own form of motivational speeches – the internal kind. He's experienced horrific injuries and setbacks, and he's got some great ideas of how to get you pushing through. Moved, Frank records Jenny the daddy of all motivational workout speeches. Allowing exaggeratedly negative self-talk to dictate your behavior will prevent you from reaching your potential. Just because you think you're not mentally strong enough to do or handle something doesn't mean it's true. You're likely able to tolerate much more than you think.   We are joined today by Speaker, Presenter, Performance Coach, TEDx Speaker, and Endurance Athlete, Luke Tyburski to talk about what he went through and how it made him mentally and physically strong after losing football. He also shares how he uses that same experience to help his clients overcome their own struggles with his coaching.   A former professional footballer, Luke Tyburski now takes on some of the world's most extreme ultra-endurance challenges. Luke created and completed a world first 2000km in 12 days Ultimate Triathlon from Morocco to Monaco, with an award-winning documentary made about this inspirational feat.   Constantly looking to challenge himself, Luke has run through the Sahara desert, down Mt Everest, and across a tropical forest in China without food, money, water, and with a plane to catch. He has undertaken mountainous double Ironman triathlons, taking him 35 non-stop hours to finish, and completed multiple 150-mile ultra-marathons and 250-mile non-stop bike rides, to name just a few of his accomplishments.   Luke Tyburski's entire life has been about performance, overcoming obstacles while dealing with setbacks to achieve his daily best. With over 15 years of experience in the health, fitness, & sports performance industries, Luke has not only been an athlete himself but coached many to achieve their physical performance goals as well.   Luke has translated his unique experiences as an extreme-endurance athlete, former professional footballer, and overcoming his dark personal battle with depression, binge eating, and suicidal tendencies into informative, engaging, and highly entertaining presentations. A published author of Chasing Extreme, Luke has shared his inspirational story to audiences around the globe alongside the mental framework he has created to be one of the world's leading endurance athletes.   Luke Tyburski wants to inspire others to live outside their comfort zone, so they can catch a glimpse of their true potential.   Star of award-winning adventure documentaries – The Ultimate Triathlon & The 500 Man. A runner trains for months for his upcoming race. His coach pushes him and explains how he can achieve his full potential. The days of training, sweating, and pain, all accumulate to one moment: The day of the race. At the starting line he can hear the shouts of the crowd. He can hear the shuffling of feet from the other competitors. He can hear the pounding of his own heart. His anxiety starts to flare as the man at the starting line raises the gun. Will he be able to live up to all of the expectations he placed on himself? Will he realize his full potential? The gun explodes and the race starts. Not everyone is a professional athlete. Not everyone is a tycoon of industry. However, every person has the potential to be the best at whatever they set their hearts on. This can create a fear where failure is possible. It can also create a fear that if success is not met, then there has been a monumental waste of potential. Just like training for a race, life has its moments of easy days and hard days. There are days where it feels like everything is going great and days where it feels like the whole world is crashing down. Life itself is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time to build up potential and truly understand who you are in relation to the world. Over the course of your life, have you found yourself living to your potential? Do you believe that it is out of your reach? Do you fear that you will never achieve it? Join Oleg and Luke as they discuss the potential of everyone and the fears we harbor along the way.

“The one time when I believe I have been the most mentally tough, is when I talked myself off the bridge”   Luke started with a foundation given to him by his incredible parents that gave him the curiosity to think “what if I can”.   Luke always wanted to be a professional football player and ended up traveling the world pursuing his childhood dream and despite temporary success, at the age of 28 he retired from the game he loved so much. Luke's entire purpose in life and identity surrounded itself around professional football and without that purpose he began to battle with depression.   Luke then decided that he needed something to focus on and signed himself up to run the marathon des sables, a race that consists of 6 marathons in 7 days across the Sahara desert to escape from his depression and the reality of his life. After successfully completing this daunting challenge, he went onto create his own ultimate triathlon. 2,000 km in 12 days. It began with a 12 24 km swim across the Gibraltar straight, followed by 1300 km bike ride and 14 marathons in 7 days. But during the training for such a successful challenge Luke found himself nearly committing suicide twice.   People now say that Luke is mentally tough for the extreme challenges he has overcome, but he says the time he was most mentally tough was when he talked himself off the bridge.     A journey of self-discovery and the importance of having a purpose, prepare to be inspired!   Resources:

“When reaching your limits, its only there where you'll catch a glimpse of your true potential” Luke shares his story and experience of overcoming obstacles, and chasing extremes. We discuss resilience and performance management, and how to translate his learnings into actionable and simple tools for management . We particularly look at self talk and how we can use it to improve our performance - consciously choosing the conversations you're having with yourself.  For organisations to create space for a ‘reset' they must look at their performance from a humanistic standpoint and leaders must normalise the conversation around mental health. Lots of corporate cultures will be questioned post-pandemic, and people must have the chance to grow, and embrace change in this changing workplace dynamic.  Luke shares with us his insights, and learnings that he has operationalised into everyday tools, looking at how we can build resilience and have genuinely vulnerable and courageous conversations with ourselves.  The main insights you'll get from this episode are : -       Being driven, curious and hard-working from a young age led to a career in professional sport travelling the world, but this took its toll on his mental and physical health, and he embarked on a new career as an adventurer, writer, documentary-maker and speaker. -       He was often asked how he pushes himself physically and mentally and how he views the world. To share his knowledge, he translated it into tools that can be used across the board to help people overcome obstacles and adapt to setbacks. -       Self-talk can help improve performance yet lots of people don't admit to or realise they are doing it; it is good to talk out loud and consciously choose the conversation you have with yourself rather than let thoughts dictate the conversation you're having. -       It is still perceived as weakness to ‘talk to yourself' or talk at all, yet vulnerability is a superpower that no one can take from you. If we are positive with the truth and answer questions honestly, we eventually become more comfortable sharing our vulnerability. -       It is simple and effective but requires training and daily practice. As we become better at speaking (up), this skill can be applied anywhere in life. -       Sportspeople grow in their career because they are always practising different techniques. In an organisational setting, ‘corporate athletes‘ too must train their minds for physical performance and learn to pivot quickly. -       This requires companies to invest time and money in a cultural evolution to allow people to grow and develop resilience - many corporate performance management systems are outdated and based on wanting results too quickly. -       Mindset is about how we view, think and act on a daily basis. In organisations there is often lots of box-ticking but not much out-of-the-box doing; whilst they like the idea of change, they are resistant to it in practice because it is hard. -       In terms of performance mindset, we are all high performers, it just depends if we act on it. Everything is relative and an improvement is a high performance for the individual. We must consciously acknowledge the scenarios we face and apply tools to them.  -       Post-pandemic, many are waiting for things to ‘return' to pre-pandemic normal, but we have come too far to go back completely: we must let the dust settle and reassess; look forward and define what is important to us, take the opportunity to reset. -       For organisations to create space for a...

Today's guest is a mindset coach and extreme adventurer, Luke Tyburski. If we just chatted about Luke's many and varied adventures it would be a good conversation, but there's more to it than that. After fulfilling a boyhood dream to be a professional footballer, Luke was forced to retire due to injury and he fell into the crippling grasp of depression. To escape the illness he turned to extreme ultra-endurance sports and became instantly addicted! Initially, the extreme challenges satisfied his escapism running through the Sahara desert, down Mt Everest, through a tropical Chinese forest without food, water, or any money as he constantly pushed his physical and mental boundaries to the absolute limit of his capabilities  With his biggest ever physical challenge looming, Luke threw everything at a 2000km, 12-day cross-continental Ultimate Triathlon from Morocco to Monaco, which he had designed himself. It almost broke him before he'd even started, and completing The Ultimate Triathlon came at a huge cost! For the next 18 months, he suffered from extreme adrenal fatigue, alongside very dark holes of depression and more binge eating. And becoming ‘lost' more than ever and in the years following The Ultimate Triathlon, he spent a lot of time reflecting on his actions, speaking to others about his thoughts, and listening to his body finally realising that he had been running away from his past. This is a very frank and honest conversation and you'll be amazed at how far an individual can push themselves and how easy it is for the pursuit of endurance goals to slip over into self-harm and destruction. We talk about: In at the deep end - The first running event, The Marathon des Sables, “toughest footrace on earth” Sports nutrition guidance is all wrong - The low-carb/high-fat experiment Go big or go home - The first triathlon - Double Brutal Training for an endurance event or self-harm - where's the line? If you've listened to the show for a while, you know I am a huge fan of self-discovery and finding more out about ones self by pushing to the individual's limits. Our guest today has done that answer. His name is Luke Tyburski. And I know you're going to get a lot out of this episode. Luke grew up in a small Australian country town he had big dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, and after years of hard work, dedication, and plenty of setbacks, he achieved his boyhood dream. Tyburski traveled the world playing the game. But, his body started to break down in his mid-20s. And that's a result of that he spiraled into a dark battle with depression, fighting many self-harming and suicidal thoughts, suffering and silence for many years without revealing what he was going through to anybody and barely surviving every day, and one of his coping mechanisms was binge eating.Once he made the difficult decision to retire from soccer in his late 20s. Because of injury, he was lost to the crippling grasp of depression once again, and escaped the illness he turned to extreme ultra-endurance sports and became instantly addicted. Initially, the extreme challenges satisfied his escapism and I think give him a sense of control. He ran through the Sahara Desert down not Everest through a tropical Chinese forest without food, water, or money in a real challenge for survival. The wealth of knowledge that Luke gained from having nearly two years off from any physical exertion gives him another wins, to view the world and his life through and he's always eager to learn each and every day. Host Brad Kearns welcomes former pro soccer player turned extreme endurance athlete turned mental training coach Luke Tyburski to talk about his remarkable journey in pursuit of the limits of human endurance performance and the profound ups and downs and life-altering lessons Luke has experienced along the way.  After playing soccer at a high level in Australia and the USA, Luke plunged headlong into ultraendurance, with his first-ever running race the epic Marathon des Sables--a legendary six-day slog through the sandy Sahara Desert covering 155 miles over six days. Luke also ran 40 miles from Mt Everest base camp into Nepal despite an intestinal ailment that prevented him from eating or drinking anything for four days prior. He created his own 12-day "Ultimate Triathlon"," swimming the Gibraltar Strait (Spain to Morocco) and pedaling and running along the Mediterranean for 2,000 kilometers total. Check out the Amazon Prime documentary "The Ultimate Triathlon." Alas, these extreme efforts (and the grueling PR and logistics efforts behind the scenes) destroyed Luke's physical health and exacerbated his clinical depression. This forced him to reckon with his purpose and recalibrate on a journey of healing. Today Luke is a mental training coach for aspiring peak performances. He coaches and lectures about how to push through perceived barriers with the force of mind, while at the same time maintaining a commitment to leading a healthy, balanced life. His autobiography is called Chasing Extreme.

Enjoy.    Some of the things we talked about    Retiring as a professional footballer at age 28 and moving into the world of endurance events. His struggle with depression. The horrible ‘now what’ and felling lost along with strategies to avoid or cope with it.  Signing up to marathons des sables in 2011 to run away from his mental health issues and why that came back to bite him in the backside.  The ultimate triathlon morocco to Monaco, swim, bike, run 2000km in 12 days.  How train your mind to be stronger and build mental toughness. “The one time when I believe I have been the most mentally tough, is when I talked myself off the bridge”   Luke started with a foundation given to him by his incredible parents that gave him the curiosity to think “what if I can”.   Luke always wanted to be a professional football player and ended up travelling the world pursuing his childhood dream and despite temporary success, at the age of 28 he retired from the game he loved so much. Luke’s entire purpose in life and identity surrounded itself around professional football and without that purpose he began to battle with depression. It began with a 24 km swim across the Gibraltar straight, followed by 1300 km bike ride and 14 marathons in 7 days. Resources:

Luke Tyburski has overcome more in his relatively short life than most of us. His dream as a child was to play professional soccer on the world stage. And he accomplished exactly that as an adult, playing in lower-level professional leagues in California, Louisiana, and the UK. But his dreams were cut short after a series of debilitating injuries. He couldn't maintain the workload of a high-level soccer player without getting hurt. Soon, he succumbed to severe clinical depression. With no backup plan and thoughts of suicide running through his mind, Luke felt lost. But then he discovered endurance sports. Reinventing himself as an ultra-endurance adventurer, Luke started competing in the most brutal events on the planet: The Ultimate Triathlon - a 12-day, 2,000km triathlon across multiple countries Marathon des Sables - a 6-day, 156-mile ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert The Everest Ultramarathon - a 40-mile ultra going down from Base Camp (elevation 17,000 feet) And these are just the most extreme events! Now, Luke is still focused on ultra-endurance events but also in sharing his journey. In this episode of the podcast, Luke and I talk about his background as a soccer player and how he decided to become an ultra-endurance athlete. Specifically, we discuss: What he learned from being injured so frequently as a soccer player How those injuries influence his training for running events The shifts in mindset that were required to transition from soccer to ultra running How running helped him fight his clinical depression What keeps Luke motivated today Luke is a teacher and has a way of lifting up those around him. I felt inspired, motivated, and in a positive state of mind after I spoke with him and I know you will, too! To sign up for a 250-kilometer foot race through the Sahara Desert without having run more than 10k in your life, and with only 6-months to train, may seem like total insanity to most people but not to Luke Tyburski. Especially not at the time in his life when he decided to take on the toughest foot race on earth known as the Marathon De Sables. What Luke couldn't see at that time was that he was desperate to escape the deep pain within that was left over from unexpectantly leaving a career he dreamed of since the age of four. He did not have the tools at that time to navigate the intensity of his failed expectations and loss of identity. So as most people do who avoid the deep pain of sadness, he ran. And he ran. And he ran. Across the Sahara Desert, down Mount Everest and through the jungle on an island off the coast China. Luke quickly moved on, or so he thought, from his identity as a professional soccer player and into the role of endurance adventurer. From running he added cycling and then swimming. In a matter of a few years, Luke took his adventuring to the extreme level and in 2015, crafted his perfect endurance overdose. The Ultimate Triathlon: Morocco to Monaco in just 12-days included swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, cycling along the coast of Spain and France and then running into Monaco. The entire event covered over 1200 miles and with his crew of four, Luke made history once again. But it was what occurred following The Ultimate Triathlon that spawned his greatest achievement yet. Luke's recently released book Chasing Extreme is an up close and personal look at the story of a guy who will never give up. His vulnerability is palpable as he gives us a very raw perspective into his struggles, realizations and healing that have taken place over his lifetime. He describes the writing of this book as better than therapy and shares with us just how painful it was to relive the darkest of times in his life. He has since entered the light and he now has clarity on how he wants to live his life. In this episode, he shares guiding principles and sage advice with our listeners. Today, I get to share a conversation with one of my favourite people – ultra endurance athlete, adventurer, speaker, coach and author Luke Tyburski. This is Luke's second appearance on All Things Risk. If you listened way back to episode 9, you know that Like completed a crazy adventure called the Ultimate Triathlon. This involved swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, cycling along the coast of Spain, and running along southern France into Monaco – 2,000+ km over 12 days. The Ultimate Triathlon is now the subject of an award-winning documentary. However, there is a deeper, more interesting, raw and inspirational side to Luke. For years, Luke concealed a diagnosis of clinical depression – and it is only very recently that he shared how he persevered through some of the darkest moments in his life in his new book Chasing Extreme. The message of Chasing Extreme and that Luke brings is particularly important to us men – we don't typically acknowledge our feelings – and the longer that goes on, the more we suffer – the outcomes of that are never positive. Luke is a great role model to inspire us to talk about these things more openly (as I do at a point in the conversation). In doing so, I think we all benefit. We get into all of that, as well as the importance or purpose in facing uncertainty and facing challenges, Like's future challenges, and loads more. Many of the common running questions and mistakes that we have all made over time are covered today.  I expect it will serve as a great resource going forward for a variety of questions we all face as we progress as a runner.  Jason and I start off with how to learn the signals your body is sending you and how running on a track for hard workouts can really help you dial into what your correct race pace should be. We cover how your recovery and easy pace runs are often slower as training miles increase as your body needs more time to recover from the harder workouts and your body really needs time to recover from those harder efforts.  You want to be faster on race day, not necessarily faster on your easy days. Are you a beginner or seem to be getting injured a bit too often?  We cover the host of things that can cause the injuries and how you can modify your training to avoid them in the future.  Are you strengthening your body in the right way?  Are you ramping up your milage too fast, are you running too quickly? You will learn how periodized strength training can assist you in being a stronger runner with strong muscles and connective tissue needed to drive you across the ground.  The fastest runners are also often the strongest runners.    Jason and I cover the causes of cramping on longer efforts (especially the marathon).  Are you prepared for the distance and how to get that way.  Are you also prepared for the pace you are trying to run and how to adjust your pacing accordingly.  Should you be making up skipped workouts? Today’s Guest Jason Fitzgerald is a USATF running coach and offers online running, strength training, injury prevention and nutrition training with his company Strength Running.  He started the company in 2010 hoping to assist runners avoid the mistakes that sidelined him in his own running career.  He is also a best selling author of two books and numerous articles for Competitor Magazine, Daily Burn and Active.  He lives in Denver Colorado with his wife and family (of 3 kids under age 5). What you will learn about: He started Strength Running after almost quitting running from an IT band injury in 2008/2009.  He realized while recovering that if he wanted to keep doing what he loved, he needed to change the way he was training, and believed that he could help others do the very same thing.  The site trains those from beginners to those training for 100 mile races and more. How running on the track for your harder/race pace training can help you learn how to understand what race pace feels like while running, as well as mentally afterwards by reviewing the splits in the data.  After doing lots of runs on the track you will begin to learn exactly what your race pace feels like from an effort perspective.  It takes lots of trial and error but you learn each time you try. Your recovery runs should be Comfortable, Controlled, and Conversational.  Your easy pace runs would normally be slightly faster than those but still really comfortable and you should be able to sustain the effort.  Your easy pace can and should also change based on how you feel that day and what your earlier workouts were earlier in the week and how well you had recovered. How runner specific strength training and cross training can can aid you in injury prevention and recovery.  How important those things are to have a long running career vs a quick running career.  Strength training can be used for both injury prevention but also for making you stronger, more coordinated and able to push off the ground with more force.  To run fast you need to be strong and forceful. Cramping is more a sign of running longer or faster than you have prepared your body for rather than an electrolyte balance.  It is also impacted by whether you have paced yourself properly in the early stages of a race. How long term thinking can help you learn to rest, recover and get healthy rather than running through pain or issues.  How as a coach he has to spend more time keeping runners from running when they should be resting rather than having to push them to do more.  What you should consider doing if you miss workouts due to life issues.   Inspirational Quotes: It is important from a wholistic perspective to consider ourselves athletes that specialize in running rather than just runners. “The most important run is tomorrow’s run.  Don’t do anything today that will negatively impact your ability to run tomorrow.” - Tom Foreman Intensity Density:  if you make it so the density of your training impairs the intensity of your training, overall your training will suffer and/or you will risk injury.    I love runners, we are all sort of geeky and nerdy and special. Motivational speaker, adventure seeker, and coach who has raced triathlons worldwide.  Luke Tyburski has pushed himself to extreme limits, in fact well past where his body could thrive. This interview shows us the limits we can push ourselves to but also shows us the importance of self-care and dealing with the issues that face us that stand in the way of our full potential. Luke is real and honest with us about the demons he faced, and what he had to do in order to heal his body.  We discuss how looking at the big picture and that our lives are more than our sport and that balance is important in everything we do is what should drive us.  But also that we should not limit ourselves and instead look to what is possible and how we can try to achieve dreams. Today’s Guest Luke Tyburski is an Ultra Runner, Coach, and Motivational Speaker who undertook a 2000KM, 12 day cross-continental Ultimate Triathlon that he designed himself in 2015.  Luke is always up for an adventure, and has done things like race down Mt Everest, learned to surf, ran (literally for his life) on an island in the South China Sea after a typhoon, and the Marathon de Sables. Luke grew up in a small Australian town where he dreamed of playing professional football (aka soccer for those of us in the US) and then achieved that dream.  Luke hosts the Kinetic Revolution Train Smarter Podcast. What you will learn about: How Luke declared at age 4 that he wanted to be a football player.  But how it took him hard work and asking for assistance as he was not naturally a “young phenom” and often never made the team in the early teens.  His journey to being a Professional player included moving to the US from Australia and getting his education here, and then on to Belgium and the UK playing professionally. How overtraining and being in a bad relationship added stress to his life and all ended up with him landing in a deep depression and eventual retirement from soccer at age 28. How as athletes we look at and review our training and nutrition but we also need to learn to review our relationships and how it is impacting our lives and what we need to change in ourselves or our relationships that help us reduce the stress in our lives and allow us to be our best. How he registered for the Marathon de Sables (6 marathons in 7 days) right as he retired, while he  was still icing a calf injury, 6 months out from the race.  So essentially instead of dealing with the big thing that had been taken out of his life, he “ran away, literally” to do a race. How he designed his own triathlon, the Ultimate Triathlon.  He blacked out during a segment and woke up in a hotel with no idea how he got there.  And then wanted to keep going.  Eventually he realized he was addicted to endurance sports and that was his drug of choice.  Rather than dealing with his depression and mourning the loss of his life as he had known it. How the Ultimate Triathlon almost broke him because all the overtraining and failure to deal with the depression all wreaked havoc with his body.  Even after the event ended he threw himself into promoting the documentary.  But he still had to stop everything for months in order to heal himself.  And how he learned from the experience.   Inspirational Quotes: I thought people who did half marathons were crazy and those who did full marathons were just on a death wish, people who do it are just nuts. And then my friend told me about this race in the Sahara Desert…..Marathon de Sables. I believe there is no one else that is mentally tougher than I am. I believe I am the toughest person in the world. Reflect on what went wrong and what you can do to fix it so you don’t make the same mistake twice. I realized the potential I had as a runner. if I opened my mind to what I was truly capable of, what else could I achieve. He has run through the Sahara desert, down Mt Everest, and through a tropical forest in China without any food, water, money, and with a plane to catch. In 2015, Luke completed a self-created ‘Ultimate Triathlon’ from Morocco to Monaco. This 2000km in 12 day cross-continental adventure pushed both his mind and body to their limits and beyond.  An award winning documentary was made about this world first feat, and Luke was mentioned in Forever Sports magazine’s 50 fittest athletes in the world for 2016.   Luke has completed all these challenges, and many more, after battling with depression, and retiring because of physical injuries from a professional soccer career.    3:00- You prepped for 4 years and just 2 days before the event, a major change happened! We talk about "lenses" on the All Things Risk Podcast - ways of viewing the world.  One  of the lenses through which we can understand human potential is sport, and in particular, endurance sport.  The conversation in this week's episode may, at first glance, seem like a discussion about nutrition in this domain, and in a way it is.  But, it is about much more than that. Meet Erica and Warren Pole. Erica and Warren are founders of the highly innovative sports nutrition company "33 Shake" - 33shake.com.  33 Shake sells  whole food plant-based sports nutrition products. Erica and Warren are endurance athletes and in the course of their training, they found it very difficult to get good, natural sports nutrition. So, they made their own based on research and experimentation.  Soon however, they were sharing their creations with others and before they knew it, they had a business on their hands. Now, 33 Shake has grown very impressively.  They have a presence in 25 countries but more significantly, some of the world's elite athletes are customers (like British multi-Olympic Gold medallist and Tour de France Winner Sir Bradley Wiggins and British double Gold Medallist Phil Hindes), and Chrissie Wellington, 4 time Ironman World Champion is a brand Ambassador.  For a company that started out on a kitchen table, that is very impressive.  But how did that happen? Listen to find out! This is a fabulous conversation that covers: Entrepreneurship and risk-taking; Nutrition and sports nutrition (particularly plant-based, vegan nutrition); Superfoods; Endurance sport as a channel to explore your limits; Working together as husband and wife Loads more! This week, we are joined by Australian endurance athlete and motivational speaker Luke Tyburski. Luke is the subject of the new documentary, The Ultimate Triathlon, which documents his grueling journey towards completing the notorious Morocco to Monaco triathlon, a 2,000 kilometer, 12 day taste of hell on earth. To put it into perspective, The Ultimate Triathlon is the equivalent of swimming 500 laps in a 50 meter pool - then cycling the entire length of Britain, and then running a staggering 14 - yes, 14 - marathons. All in less than 2 weeks. In this episode, I wanted to gain some insight not just into Luke's physical performance and training regimen, but also into what goes on in the mind of a person who willingly subjects himself to such grueling conditions. How does he do it? Why? And what can we learn from it? Throughout the episode, we talk about endurance, goal setting, tenacity, and how you can learn to overcome even the toughest of physical limitations. Luke shares how he has been able to train himself to push past the breaking point, and there are a ton of great takeaways that are sure to inspire and motivate you.

“If you want extreme results, you need to do extreme things.”Andrew “Spud Fit” TaylorOne of the great privileges of hosting this podcast is the occasional opportunity it presents to shift focus from conversations with globally prominent thought leaders to shine a bright spotlight on the struggles and triumphs of the everyman.Folks living average, relatable lives. Anonymous individuals dealing with issues all too many of us confront and combat — obesity, depression, disease, addiction and/or a sense of general dissatisfaction with their current life status. Authentic souls who reach the limit of their pain threshold and cross that tipping point to finally proclaim, enough is enough. On a personal note, nothing gives me more satisfaction than celebrating those who courageously challenge their life paradigm, step outside the cozy comfort zone, and attempt the extraordinary — all in the interest of gaining control of their well being and seizing the reigns of their life path.Folks like Josh LaJaunie, who lost over 200 pounds to conquer ultramarathons and even grace the cover of this month's Runners World magazine. Or Brett & David Wilcox – the father-son duo who ran across the USA to raise GMO awareness. Luke Tyburski fits the bill — a guy who overcame depression to conquer The Ultimate Triathlon. And I'd add Adam Sud to that list — a young guy who kicked adderal, reversed his diabetes and found a life.Sharing these experiences is what makes this podcast different from the others — meaningful and special in a very unique way.So if you enjoy the uplifting everyman story, then you are in for a treat today.About a year ago, Andrew Taylor stepped onto the scale — 334 pounds. The Aussie didn't like what he saw. He didn't like how he felt. Clinically depressed, medicated and hopelessly addicted to unhealthy foods, his elevator was going down — fast.Fed up and sick & tired of being sick & tired, he drew a line in the sand and decided to step over it.It was time to finally wake up and seize the reigns of his physical, mental and emotional health and well being. To once and for all reclaim the life he felt quickly slipping away.Blessed with self-awareness, he saw his path to freedom would lay not in balance but rather in what most would consider drastic and extreme measures.Andrew decided that he would eat nothing but potatoes for an entire year.Nothing. But. Potatoes. For an entire year.On January 2, 2016, all 334 depressed pounds of Andrew popped open his phone, clicked record, and announced his quest on YouTube — to a subscriber base of exactly zero. The single video soon morphed into a daily vlog, a raw, personal and authentic look into the highs, lows, how to's and whatnots of a potato-fueled journey Andrew dubbed Spud Fit.He presumed nobody would care. This was for him. Surprisingly, the world took notice. It wasn't long before the global media picked up Andrew's personal interest story and before he could even blink, his wild adventure was foisted into the white hot spotlight.Over the last year, Andrew has been profiled in countless publications — eve... If you listen to podcasts on Ironman and endurance events you may have heard of the Ultimate Triathlon. Luke has given a lot of interviews on his journey including a terrific pair of interviews that you can find at www.zentriathlon.com . That being said this is the kind of story that I absolutely love because it is something that if you didn't know he'd already done it you would say that what he did was impossible. But he did it. Luke Tyburski put together the idea of the Ultimate Triathlon because he says he was "escaping from life" and wanted a "massive deep challenge" You can find full details about The Ultimate Triathlon at http://theultimatetriathlon.co/ He swam across the straight of Gibraltar, Biked through Spain to France and then ran the equivalent of 14 marathons across France to Monaco. It's crazy, right? But he did it. You have to hear it to believe it. Because Luke has given several interviews about this event I do try to stick totally to the highlights of the event. Even with that condensing a 12 day event into one interview makes for a nice long podcast. I want to give a great shout out to Warren Pole for connecting me with Luke. Luke made a documentary of his journey which has just released. I haven't seen it myself but I'm going to and Luke ends the interview with a very special offer to anybody who wants to put together a group showing of the documentary. You can find Luke on twitter @luketyburski He's also on Instagram as @luketyburski Thank you very much Luke for being on the Mile after Mile Podcast. This week I had the absolute privilege of chatting with Luke Tyburski. Luke's whole view on life and his amazing adventures could mean I could honestly talk with him for days on each of his individual adventures. We focus on his story of the Ultimate Triathlon that he recently completed and also touch on some of his other amazing achievements including the Marathon Des Sables, his first ever triathlon The Double Brutal Extreme Triathlon (yes this was his first ever triathlon) and his experience learning to surf by riding 400kms to reach the coast before learning to surf the very next morning. Like many of us Luke hasn't always this motivated, goal driven and generally happy. If you're in a bit of a spot right now where you're not totally happy then I'm sure Luke's story will help you to grow and overcome your struggles. Luke's Hula Hoop theory is one we can all take something from. Throw it where you can't see it anymore, find it and move yourself back into the middle again. The further you throw it the bigger the adventure. You can find Luke at www.luketyburski.com and he would love to hear your feedback. Until next week Keeping moving Keep going forward and Keep kicking goals

“What gets me through the dark days is knowing that I can make a difference in someone else’s life if I apply myself.”Luke TyburskiAussie born, UK-dwelling adventure athlete Luke Tyburski isn’t superman. He’s not famous nor is he a world champion. And he’s the first to say he’s just not that talented. In most ways Luke is a normal bloke. An everyman who decided to face his debilitating battle with clinical depression through the lens of adventure and ultra-endurance sports.Soccer obsessed as a young boy, from the get go Luke realized he lacked the God-given athletic gifts enjoyed by his teammates. Nonetheless, perseverance prevailed and Luke achieved his life-long dream of traveling the world as a professional footballer.Unfortunately, that career was cut short by significant, chronic & persistent injuries. What followed was an unexpected yet quite severe bout with acute, clinical depression — a back hole of desperation that often left him bedridden and teetering on hopelessness. To escape this prison, Luke dug deep. Through sheer force of will matched with equal parts faith, he compelled his mutinying body, mind and spirit to simply get up, get outside and begin exploring again — one step at a time.Having never ran more than 10 kilometers at any one time, and with only six months to prepare, in 2012 Luke conquered the infamous Marathon des Sables, a 250 kilometer, six stage self-sufficient running race across the treacherous and unrelenting sand dunes of the Moroccan Sahara.Since then he has competed in a variety of adventure races, including the Mt. Everest Ultra Marathon. His first ever triathlon? The double ironman distance Double Brutal Extreme Triathlon. My kind of guy.Currently, Luke's sights are set on achieving the truly extraordinary — a self-styled 12-day, 2000 kilometer adventure he calls The Ultimate Triathlon that kicks off in Morocco with a swim across the Straight of Gibraltar before cycling and running the coastline all the way to Monaco. It’s easy to admire the feats of the truly touched. It’s inspirational. But I cherish sharing stories like Luke's because they are aspirational. And because relatable, everyman guys like Luke demonstrate that big dreams are possible and accessible for all. This is a conversation that explores:* what its like to be clinically depressed* preparing for The Ultimate Triathlon* developing confidence as an outmatched youth* how attention to nutrition changed his game* the importance of a holistic approach to well-being* endurance sports as escapism* the importance of adventurous life* how the compassion of strangers in Nepal changed his perspective* what keeps him motivated; and* how to bridge the gap between inspiration and actionAn adventurous life is a worth leading. Luke's life is well worth the examination. I sincerely hope you enjoy our discussion. How can you invite more adventure into your life? I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | StitcherSHOW NOTESHARRYS: Today's show was sponsored by Harrys — a sup...
