Why write functional C#? Carl and Richard talk to Simon Painter about what happens when you apply functional programming approaches to your C# code. Simon discusses how some functional programming aspects are best served in a functional language like F#, but you can write C# in a more functional style. The conversation focuses on minimizing side effects - writing your code so that you can see what it does and how it would behave when changed. Functional code tends to be more testable as well!

Simon Painter @theillusionistslive is the creative mind behind the biggest magic shows in the world, The Illusionists, Circus 1903, Le Noir, and Adrenaline. In this interview we explore ways in which we can find the balance between being good creatively and making sure that we are making money with our projects. We also talk about the importance of, on the one hand, following our dreams and on the other hand, to always keep on doing and trying many different things because what really matters in the entertainment industry is our experience.Simon is the executive producer and creative director of The Works Entertainment which is one of the most successful live entertainment companies in the world, in charge of first class entertainment in over 400 cities and 40 countries.Simon started his artistic career as a fiddle player for the Irish dance company Spirit of the Dance. After working closely with the show's producer, he soon became interested in producing big shows himself and had his first chance with a dance company in South Africa, which came with many challenges, as he would later find out.Above all, Simon decided to take risks and face chaos in different ways. Many lessons followed and learning from experience he has now achieved what he had envisioned with extraordinary success. Paul remembers a cheater in drama club. Also our friends at Opening Arguments want your support for a baseball coach who might lose his job: "So here's what I want you to take 30 seconds to do. I want you to send an email to the Giants. I'll give you those email addresses in a minute. And I want you to say three simple things, in your own words. Those are: I stand with Gabe Kapler. I applaud the Giants for backing their manager for taking a stand against gun violence, and not shutting him down; and I'll be supporting the team financially, going to more games, buying a Kapler jersey, and telling my friends to do the same. And that's it. I know that a lot of you feel the same way I do, and right now, our voices are being overwhelmed, drowned out by the right wing. So if you agree with Gabe Kapler's message, let's let his bosses know we support him. That's the President of Baseball Operations, Farhan Zaidi, and the CEO, Larry Baer. Today's episode is all about functional programming. While C# isn't necessarily designed for functional programming you can still write functional code as long as you aren't a purist. Simon Painter joins us to talk about functional programming in general and how to use it in C# specifically. How do you write functional code in an object-oriented language? How do you use classes? What limitations do you put on your methods? We discuss these questions and also look at the new record type, Funcs, switch statements and Linq. Of course F# comes up during our discussion and we go through some of the differences and how C# has adopted a number of things from the F# language. Do you use functional programming in C#? Do you use the F# language? Let us know on Twitter at @dotnet_Podcast.
