Global Agriculture Challenges and Perceptions

Today, Shaye welcomes back Nebraska rancher, Jaclyn Wilson to discuss how extensive international travel has shaped her ranch management and views of global agriculture. Wilson describes how travel began through the Nebraska LEAD program and expanded into regular international speaking and industry visits, leading to operational changes at home such as organized team planning with whiteboards and calendars and greater delegation. She contrasts U.S. open-pasture wintering with UK/Ireland winter confinement driven by mud and heavy clay soils, and shares a Netherlands example where turning cows out to grass becomes an agritourism event.   Wilson outlines Dutch regulations and subsidies tied to nitrates, water runoff, stocking limits, and methane, and questions measurement accuracy for emissions and carbon credits. From Kenya, she highlights corruption concerns, diverse agricultural tours, and a “My Tank” water project. She emphasizes U.S. beef efficiency and safety but notes persistent overseas perceptions about sanitation, traceability, confinement, and antibiotics, and encourages producers to stay aware of global concerns and opportunities, including genetics and investment abroad.  Learn more about what Vence could look like on your operation here: https://bit.ly/4kfWrCG  Learn more about Noble here: https://bit.ly/3DD7uG0  Catch more conversations like this one and learn more at https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/    01:24 Jaclyn's Travel Bug Origins  03:29 Ranch Changes From Travel  05:35 Whiteboards And Planning  07:16 Winter Housing Culture Shock  10:16 Netherlands Dairy And Agritourism  12:00 EU Rules Subsidies And Nitrates  15:21 Methane Carbon And Measurement  17:52 Africa And Nuffield Journey  20:33 Kenya Corruption And Water  24:43 Water Links Every Country  25:48 Why Home Matters Most  28:08 US Beef Strengths And Perception  31:13 Genetics Trade And Open Minds

The Association of Anaesthetists meeting in London was the perfect spot for us to launch our new series on Artificial Intelligence. Here, Andy Cumpstey and James Bowness discuss the new monthly series and the UK-Ireland "demand signaling" project on AI in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and acute pain, supported by The Association. They are joined by their guest Nicky De Beer, The Association's chief executive. She explains that their members want problems defined in advance before technology solutions are imposed from above. She highlights key clinical themes—enhanced monitoring and decision support, personalized anaesthesia, and automation of routine tasks—and nonclinical impacts such as operational efficiency and data-driven decision making. The conversation stresses embracing AI with caution, addressing basic IT shortcomings, developing CPD/training, multidisciplinary research, ethical and safety-focused policy, international collaboration, grant funding, and progressing toward practical AI guidelines and advocacy with policymakers. -- Join us at Evidence Based Perioperative Medicine (EBPOM) World Congress 2026 in London. Be part of a global conversation as clinicians from around the world gather between 7-9th July at the British Library in London. What does it really mean to reset a relationship between nations? In this episode of Our World, Connected, host Christine Wilson is joined by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Erasmus Smith's Professor of Modern History at Trinity College Dublin, to discuss the complex and deeply intertwined relationship between the UK and Ireland. Drawing on her own life and work across Ireland, the UK and beyond, Jane reflects on how history, imperial legacy and mobility continue to shape identities and relationships across these islands. Exploring difficult conversations about the past and the challenges brought about by Brexit, as well as celebrating educational and cultural links and looking to a more hopeful future, she explores how these connections can be nurtured. We also hear a personal perspective from Bukky Adebowale, Policy Education Officer at the Irish Network Against Racism. Bukky shares how her educational and cultural experiences in Ireland and later in the UK shaped her understanding of her Irish and Yoruba identity, sense of belonging and connections. Her story highlights how education, culture and relationships can help people bridge histories, communities and borders. This episode questions whether national relationships can ever be reset through diplomacy alone, and how culture, education and people-to-people connections can help imagine a more open, empathetic future.Listen to Our World, Connected, the award-winning podcast from the British Council, exploring culture, communication, and the power of collaboration in a changing world.Further resources:Erasmus+ https://www.britishcouncil.org/erasmusplus Higher Education Mobility UK and Irelandhttps://www.britishcouncil.ie/higher-education-mobility-researchProfessor Jane Ohlmeyerhttps://www.janeohlmeyer.ie/

Is stability becoming the new BPO battleground? https://www.linkedin.com/in/garyslade1/ https://www.tp.com/ Summary: Mark Hillary and Peter Ryan discuss the importance of stability in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services, highlighting Gary Slade's (TP EMEA CCO) views on the shift from cost to reliability. Vishvapani explores the dynamic vision of Urgyen Sangharakshita in setting up a new Buddhist movement in the West, and asks how we might relate to him now. His central reference point in this provocative and moving talk is the Padmasambhava Abisheka - the initiation received by Sangharakshita in Kalimpong, India, in 1962 from the great Tibetan Lama, Kachu Rimpoche. The energy emanating from a simple shrine room–location of that significant meeting in Sangharakshita's life–reverberates through everything that came next, the bright and shadow sides. Voices and stories, told and untold, come echoing through as Vishvapani makes the case that a deeper examination of Sangharakshita's teaching and approach reveals a deeper rhythm to his life and work that is relevant to everyone practising in Triratna today. Ellen Coyne and Harry McGee join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· Taoiseach Micheál Martin's St Patrick's Day visit to The White House to meet US president Donald Trump could prove awkward should he face questions about the US and Israel's military action against Iran, and its impact on the Middle East, Gulf regions and soaring fuel prices. Last year's meeting was a minefield to be navigated – perhaps Martin has learned from that experience.· A far less fraught meeting took place on Friday when the Taoiseach welcomed Britain's prime minister Keir Starmer to the UK-Ireland summit at Fota House in Cork. Security and co-operation were the order of the day, as Anglo-Irish relations continued to improve from a post-Brexit low.· And the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided this week, after a mere fifteen years, not to bring criminal charges against anyone arising from the Moriarty tribunal's final report in 2011. Michael Lowry and Denis O'Brien no doubt welcomed the decision.Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· The brave and anonymous women we all owe a debt, the beef between farmers and Government, and Patrick Freyne's golden age of male role models.Would you like to receive daily insights into world events delivered to your inbox? This episode is Part 2 of Stephanie's conversation with Michele Coleman. For the full conversation, make sure you listen to Part 1 and subscribe to the podcast. In this episode of Taxbytes for Expats, I'm joined again by Michele Coleman, a valued Expat Taxes client, as she shares the reality of returning to Ireland after decades living in the UK. Michele speaks candidly about what surprised her most, from banking and buying property, to moving her belongings, importing a car, and navigating everyday life back home.We talk through the practical lessons Michele learned the hard way: why having the right advisers early matters, how UK–Ireland differences can catch people out post-Brexit, and why planning currency transfers, removals, insurance, and car registration properly can save serious stress and cost.Michele also reflects on the emotional side of returning: resetting routines, rebuilding community, and adjusting expectations when “home” has changed. This conversation hit close to home for me, as my experience moving back from Australia was similar regarding the connection with friends and family when you return to Ireland not for a holiday, but for the long-term.Main Topics Discussed in this Episode:Buying Property and Banking on Returning to Ireland: Michele shares her experience navigating Ireland's stricter banking system, the importance of existing accounts, and how having the right solicitor and advisers made the property purchase run smoothly.Moving Belongings from the UK Post-Brexit: We discuss the realities of international removals, why specialist experience and proper insurance matter, and the costly lessons Michele learned when things went wrong.Importing a Car and Avoiding Unexpected Taxes: Michele outlines what repats need to know about bringing a car from the UK, including registration timelines, exemptions, and the real risk of penalties if the process isn't followed correctly.Tax Planning Between the UK and Ireland: We cover the importance of understanding double taxation, pensions, capital gains, and investment differences — and why getting tax advice well before the move is essential.Readjusting to Life Back Home: Beyond the logistics, Michele reflects on the emotional and practical side of returning to Ireland, from rebuilding routines and friendships to adjusting expectations about infrastructure and daily life.*****Use the link below and quote "Expat Taxes" when registering with Currencies Direct to receive a €50 One4All or Amazon voucher when you transfer €5000 or more in your first six months with Currencies Direct.*Click here for a special offer from our sponsor, Currencies Direct******If you loved this episode or have a similar story, we'd love to hear from you! When you imagine the future, is it powered by clean energy or driven by AI? As the UK works towards its net-zero goals, our energy system is being asked to do more than ever before – delivering power that's cleaner, smarter, and more reliable to support an increasingly digital and connected world The future isn't just electric – it's intelligent. Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we live and work, boosting productivity, driving economic growth, and helping to tackle some of society's biggest challenges. But AI doesn't run on ideas and data alone – it runs on energy. And as its capabilities expand, so does the demand for power to keep it running. So how do we make sure the UK's ambition to lead in AI and achieve net zero go hand in hand? Can we build an energy system of the future that powers both our digital and sustainable ambitions? What will it take to get there, and who needs to lead the charge? That's what we're exploring in this episode of The Green Room with Carol Yan, General Manager responsible for Amazon Web Services' Energy & Utilities business across the UK & Ireland, and Tom Harris, leader of Deloitte's Sustainable Business Solutions practice, as we ask: What will it take to power our AI goals? Tune in to find out: How AI and new technology is accelerating the journey towards a more sustainable future What really happens when energy giants and tech companies innovate together Why "coopetition" is key to tackling AI's environmental impact How businesses can scale AI responsibly without losing their competitive edge Enjoyed this episode? In this final episode of the Van Life Diaries: Europe 1985, we return to England, drive through Scotland and Wales, and catch a ferry to Ireland. Then it's back to London, a farewell to our beloved campervan, on to Singapore for a few days and finally we end up back home in Perth, Australia, after six months away. What a strange feeling! This is the sixth part of a monthly, six-episode series celebrating the fact that exactly 40 years ago this year, my family and I spent six months in a striped motorhome travelling around Europe. I was nine years old and yes, this trip had an enormous impact on my life - I'm sure you wouldn't be listening to this podcast today if Van Life 1985 hadn't taken place! Throughout the series, I'll include chats recorded with my Dad this year, extracts from my late Mum's travel diary from 1985, and of course my own memories and thoughts. More than a quarter of AI/IT decision-makers think AI will create jobs

Climb Channel Solutions Ireland, the specialist technology distributor, has announced survey findings which reveal that more than a quarter (28%) of AI/IT decision-makers in Ireland think AI will create jobs for their company The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 600 AI/IT decision-makers in large companies across Ireland, the UK and Germany - found that respondents in Ireland were the most positive about the impact of AI on their workplace (45%). In comparison, UK decision-makers were less positive (34%), with those in Germany even less so (26%). Despite some caution across markets, more than half (56%) of all respondents would trust an AI agent to make routine decisions on their behalf at work. A similar proportion (53%) feel comfortable using generative AI in their role. Some 45% took this even further and said they could not do their job without AI. That might explain why 55% of AI/IT decision-makers have increased their own use of AI in the workplace over the last 12 months. It might also explain why the same proportion (55%) report that their organisation is planning to scale current AI initiatives. The study found that investment in AI is also on the rise, with some 52% of companies set to spend more this year compared to last. Positively, 55% of AI/IT decision-makers think their organisation has already gotten a return on investment with their AI spend. However, it is not necessarily all about getting a return as 54% of respondents in Ireland revealed that employees in their company are encouraged to experiment with AI tools for activities such as prototyping, testing and ideation. Brian Davis, VP of Sales for the UK & Ireland, Climb Channel Solutions Ireland, said: "It's clear that there is plenty of enthusiasm and positivity around the potential and impact of AI - particularly in Ireland, where experimentation with AI tools looks to be high on the agenda. Given that people see it as an enabler when it comes to doing their jobs and creating employment opportunities, it's no wonder that organisations are upping the AI ante. "What remains to be seen however is the value that increased usage and investment will deliver, especially in the long-term. While companies can't look into the future and strategies need to remain agile, they can ensure that they are implementing policies and engaging partners today to support effective AI implementation and drive business success moving forward." Subhuti gives us an early sight of the developing vision behind the Sangharakshita Library and Study Centre at Adhisthana, via a stirring evocation of the need for a deep knowledge of the Dharma strong enough to meet the considerable challenges of the modern world. In recalling Sangharakshita's conviction that something was working through him, Subhuti suggests that we cannot hope to understand the depth of vision available to us without fully immersing ourselves in the study of our teacher's emerging, unfolding understanding of just what it is he–and we–are trying to channel. In hearing of the different potential ways to take our own knowledge deeper via the Sangharakshita Library and Study Centre, we are challenged to engage with our faith and with our doubt, and encounter the work of our founding teacher anew.
