As famous individuals become transparent about their mental health struggles, we are learning a lot about society's opinion of mental health. A couple of days ago Simone Biles did an interview that brought more transparency to why she did not perform at the Olympics. . This episode reviews what Simone Bile taught us about mental health in the public eye.

My guest for this episode is a four-time Olympian, five-time best-selling author, with over one-hundred fortune 500 clients and he has presented over five hundred Major Keynotes around the world.  At twenty-one Ruben Gonzalez decided to become an Olympian.  Even more incredibly, he decided to compete in the Luge.  He not only succeeded but became a four-time Olympian in one of the most challenging sports in the world, competing in his last Winter Olympic games at the age of forty-seven!  More than that he is a wealth of valuable insight and a gentleman.  I first met Ruben over a decade ago when we were both speakers, along with Martin Kove (you might know him better as John Kreese, the evil Sensei from Cobra Kai), at an event in Cancun Mexico.  I was fascinated by his story and instantly liked him.  What I like about this episode, apart from the stories, anecdotes, and priceless insights that Ruben brings, is the fact that we see things differently.  As you listen, you'll notice that I get quite passionate at times.  Yet, although we agree in principle, we can have disagreement that brings us both to an even higher level of understanding.  We discuss such topics as resilience, perseverance, self-awareness, and other attributes indispensable to not just Olympic success, but high performance in whatever arena you're operating in.  We challenge assumptions around the importance of having a high self-esteem and talked about trauma and mental health.  We also discussed the recent events around the legendary Simone Biles.  In some aspects of the conversation, we see eye to eye.  In others, we had different perspectives.  Which I think made for an intense, as well as interesting conversation.  I think you will too.  Enjoy!Note: For some reason I cannot explain I referred to Simone Biles as “Simone Bile” multiple times.  May have been me not paying attention in the heat of the conversation.  Apologies.

Her calling was Greater than she knew. I think everyone on this planet know the Simone Bile sat out most of the Olympics with mental health issues. As the Goat in the world of Gymnastics she could have remained silence, but she chose not to. Courageous decision. She could have muscled through to make everyone happy.  Instead, she used her large platform to discuss mental health issues. Simone has a much larger PURPOSE, she discussed the sexual abuse she endured as a gymnast on the USA Olympics Team. When she arrived in Japan, she was clear that as the lone voice left on the team, she felt obligated to make sure the USA Olympics didn't convenient forget. That was her overarching Momentous goal. You see, when you tell your mind what your gargantuan goal is, your mind gets to work immediately to figure out how to make that happen. I'm sure that is not where the twisties came from, but I truly believe she had this amazing platform, so the Mind thinks… let's get started, NOW. As a bonus, Simone sitting out propelled the other gymnast on the USA Team to step into the spotlight.  Each one of them won medals including the all-around team event. (It's awesome that two of them are from the East Valley in Phoenix.) When you have a momentous overarching goal and direct your mind, your mind will get to work and make it happen.
