On Dec. 12, 1964, Jomo Kenyatta was elected the first president of the newly independent Kenya, marking a historic milestone for the nation. Born Kamau wa Ngengi on Oct. 20, 1893, in British East Africa, Kenyatta rose to prominence as a champion for land rights after white settlers seized Kenyan territories. Kenyatta's political journey began with the East African Association, which led him to London to oppose British plans for an East African union. He spent 15 years abroad, studying and advocating for African rights. Kenyatta's influence endured, culminating in Kenya's independence in 1963 and his presidency until 1978, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's identity and governance. Comparing Presidential candidates to General George Washington is a long-held tradition in American journalism. Is it fair to hold modern politicians to such a historic standard? The Atlantic once again published yet another hit piece on Donald Trump this time by a history professor. So we called in the Dean of History, Dr. William B. Allen to analyze the Atlantic critique and give us some guidelines on how to fairly evaluate American Presidents and those wishing to hold the office so aptly defined by the First President. KCSB's Ashley Segat interviews First President Pro Tempore Dan Siddiqui to break down parts of the 75th Senate Strategic Vision Plan, including the temporary Committee for Financial Transparency and Efficiency.
It's the Ides of October, and that got me thinking about other would-be Julius Caesar presidents of American history. The men who never were nominated, and maybe never even run, but who could have been either the great Man of the People who'd lead us to glory.... or terrible Imperators who tore us apart. I'll be posting a bunch of these throughout this week. This time it's iconoclastic Sam Houston, First President of the short-lived Republic of Texas, and maybe the one man who could have kept the Union together in 1860?

Send us a Text Message.George Washington - most of you know him as America's first president, Revolutionary War hero, founding father, face of the one dollar bill, chopped down a cherry tree, wooden teeth, real man's man if you know what I mean. I think that's all most people know or think they know about him. But the cherry tree thing, that never happened. The wooden teeth? They weren't made of wood. I don't think many people actually know George Washington's story - who he was, what he did, what his life was like, the good, the bad, the truth. Let's fix that. The debate about the supposed “colonial” foundations of Israel goes on and on. But I wonder whether Jehuda Reinharz's definitive new biography of Chaim Weizmann might help clarify the unintentional colonial foundations of the Zionist project. Reinharz explains that Weizmann made his name as a brilliant chemist in the UK, where he leveraged his equally glittering social networking skills into the publication of the 1917 Balfour Declaration. As Reinharz told me, it was Weizmann's ability to appear like a British aristocrat that enabled him to successfully schmooze imperial Brits like Lloyd-George, Balfour, Astor and Mark Sykes (of Sykes-Picot fame). So even if his Zionist dream wasn't formally designed as a colonial project, the fact that Chaim Weizmann had to dress up like British colonialist to get his way might have unintentionally resulted in Israel becoming a spooky replica of a European colony. To remix Marx, great men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please.Jehuda Reinharz was a long-time professor at Brandeis University, serving as Richard Koret Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies; Director of the Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry; founder of the Jacob and Libby Goodman Institute for the Study of Zionism and Israel; Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; and University President. In January 2011, Dr. Reinharz assumed the presidency of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation. Dr. Reinharz is the author or co-author of more than one hundred articles and thirty-one books in various languages and the recipient of eight honorary doctorates. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He earned his master's degree in medieval Jewish history from Harvard and his doctorate in modern Jewish history from Brandeis University.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators.
