My guest today is Sir Ronald Cohen, often referred to as "the father of British venture capital" and "the father of impact investing." As Co-founder and President of GSG Impact, Sir Ronald is leading a revolution to transform how the financial world measures and reports a company's value by including its net impact on people and our planet. Early in his career, he co-founded Apax Partners, one of the oldest and largest international private equity firms. His ability to anticipate market shifts – a principle which he calls “the second bounce of the ball” – was key to his success. However, he saw his financial success was also increasing inequality, prompting him to create new tools like the Social Impact Bond, which ties investor returns to measurable social benefits.Through his latest initiative, the International Foundation for Valuing Impact (IFVI), Sir Ronald has established rules to standardize impact valuation in financial terms, akin to how GAAP standardizes financial disclosures for US publicly traded companies.IFVI is working to establish a global framework that quantifies social and environmental impact in monetary terms. The foundation provides open-source data, methodologies, and valuation metrics to ensure transparency and consistency in impact measurement across industries.IFVI is already gaining traction among major financial institutions, corporations, and regulators. By integrating impact into core business and investment strategies, IFVI aims to reshape markets – ensuring that companies reducing carbon emissions, improving labor conditions, and fostering social equity are rewarded not just ethically, but financially. This marks a fundamental shift in capitalism, one that aligns profit with purpose and empowers investors to accelerate the transition toward a more sustainable and equitable global economy. With over $40 trillion invested in ESG and impact funds today, he believes we are on the brink of a financial revolution – one where companies are no longer valued solely by net income as we do today but by the total financial value that their operations contribute to people and our planet.Tune in and meet the true visionary of impact investing!—Connect with SRI360°:PODCASTWEBSITEXFACEBOOKSign up for the free weekly email update—Key Takeaways:Intro (00:00)Sir Ronald's background (03:48)Discovering venture capital at Harvard (13:17)Founding Apax Partners and shaping the European VC landscape (19:28)Co-founding IFVI (33:16)The potential for impact accounting to drive innovation (45:41)The “brown-to-green” transition and the role of impact measurement (54:09)The challenges of aligning IFVI's methodology globally (01:04:23)Sir Ronald's advice for impact investors (01:09:05)Rapid Fire Questions (01:17:19)Contact info (01:20:22)—Additional Resources:Connect with Sir Ronald Cohen:

Money Matters is terug! Shownotes: https://socfin.nl/podcast-money-matters/zit-er-toekomst-in-de-social-impact-bond/. Productie: Spraakmaker Media.
This episode is with Nick Temple, the Chief Executive of the Social investment Business. I haven't had anyone from the social investment space on the podcast – so I thought it was high time I did! Social Investment can play an important enabling role in public services and there are some important new ideas in the Levelling Up White Paper e.g. around enabling the use of government pension funds for impact investing - so it's important for us all to have an understanding. As well as a general discussion about the work of the Social Investment Business and the state of the social investment sector, we talk about how social investment can be structured (social investment can unlock other funding) and I ask what exactly a Social Impact Bond is and how can it support the delivery of public services. I am particularly interested in how we can encourage radical ideas in public services, so Nick and I get into some detail on how social investors can support new ideas and the role of government in encouraging (and funding) the early stages of the innovation journey. I hope you enjoy it. NB - In the pod, Nick mentions that one of their investors is a social enterprise - its Fusion21 (www.fusion21.co.uk) and they do a lot of interesting stuff.
In a meeting hosted by the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy in 2007, the term impact investing was coined. Yet seven years prior to that, in 2001, Sir Ronald Cohen (just Ronald Cohen at the time) was requested by the UK Treasury to establish the Social Investment Task Force (SITF). The SITF was tasked with exploring the ways in which the UK could create wealth, spur economic growth, and improve the lives of its most vulnerable people at the same time. It was his work here where he and his colleagues developed much of their thinking on impact investing. Only a year after establishing the SITF, Ronnie (as he prefers to be called) would become Sir Ronnie, not for his work in impact investing but for his three decades of work essentially bringing venture capital to the UK. Ronnie was only 26 years old when he co-founded Apax Partners, a private equity firm that would grow to manage $50B in assets with offices across the globe. By 2013, then Prime Minister David Cameron asked Ronnie to lead the G8 Social Investment Task Force (G8T) in order to "catalyze a global market in social impact investment." Not long after that he was then asked by the British Government to lead an effort to expand the G8T further globally and resulted in him establishing The Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (GSG) in 2015. During this time, Sir Ronnie also contributed to creating the world's first Social Impact Bond which aimed to reduce recidivism rates at the Peterborough Penitentiary in the UK. He and his colleague's findings on SIBs were articulated in a now-famous report "Impact Investment: The Invisible Heart of the Markets" which kicked off a movement to spread the idea of impact investing across the world. All of that amounts to one hell of an impressive career by any standard but especially for a refugee who fled Egypt as a result of the Suez Crisis in the 1950s. At 11 yrs old, Ronnie and his parents arrived in the UK with just a single suitcase each and Ronnie clutching his precious stamp collection in his arms. Therefore, it is my great honour to welcome Sir Ronald Cohen to the podcast.
