Utah Children's Book Author Kouri Richins to Stand Trial for Alleged Murder of Husband A Utah mother of three who published a children's book about grief after her husband's death has been ordered to stand trial on charges of murder, attempted murder, and other crimes in relation to his death. Kouri Richins, 34, has been accused of drugging her husband's Valentine's Day sandwich in February 2022 in an alleged murder attempt that he survived, and then spiking his cocktail with a fatal dose of fentanyl 17 days later. Prosecutors have also alleged that Richins was in debt when she fraudulently obtained a $2 million life insurance policy on her husband before his death. She was charged with multiple counts of fraud and forgery in connection with the allegations. Richins has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has previously claimed innocence, telling "Dateline" this year that she had been taken away from her "babies." "This means war," she said. Despite her claims of innocence, a judge has ruled that prosecutors have shown probable cause to try Richins on the allegations of financial crimes and murder charges in the death of her husband, Eric Richins, 39. Richins' trial is scheduled to begin in the last week of April. One year after her husband's death in March 2022, Richins published a children's book called "Are You With Me?" which sought to help children struggling with the death of a loved one. The book follows the story of a child who has lost their father, but is reminded that his presence still exists all around them, just like an angel watching over them. The case has drawn significant attention due to the tragic circumstances surrounding Eric Richins' death and the allegations against his wife. The trial is expected to be closely watched by the public and the media as it unfolds. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Childcare is crucial to Utah's economic success. United Way of Salt Lake Vice President of Public Policy Elizabeth Garbe shares why. Elizabeth Garbe: Childcare is essential for working parents in Utah. It affords them time to further their careers or education and their children a strong foundation for future learning. Breakdowns in childcare, however, are putting families behind. We partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Salt Lake Chamber, Utah Community Builders, and Voices for Utah Children to release a report, “Untapped Potential in Utah,” examining Utah's childcare landscape so the business community and legislative leaders can better understand the unique needs of working parents and impact of a lack of affordable childcare. The report estimates how often parents of young children leave the workforce or educational opportunities because of insufficient childcare. It outlines a conservative estimate of the direct financial impact the breakdowns in childcare have on Utah's economy – a nearly $1.36 billion loss annually. While these challenges are persistent and complex, they are addressable. The business community can play a central role in developing solutions. Derek Miller: By continuing to listen to the needs of parents, and working to find public and private solutions, Utah will be better equipped to unlock the economic potential of our workforce. We must work together to find innovative solutions to our childcare challenges. Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: March 24, 2023

On today’s episode, “Engaging the Hope Within Us,” our guests are award-winning classical pianists and siblings Gregory and Deondra Brown of The 5 Browns. When we think of classical music, we often think only of the beauty of it, not also of the pain and vulnerability that it can express and evoke. The 5 Browns shook perceptions of the classical music world when they revealed that all three sisters had been sexually abused as children and sought justice in their case. This brave act shattered stereotypes and elevated the issue of child sexual abuse in an audience where it had previously been little discussed. Our conversation today touches some core questions. How does music connect us to our own humanity? How can music help heal survivors in broken places that nothing else seems to reach? And how does the love and supportive family, as allies, help survivors thrive? April Young Bennett – Ask a SuffragistAired Wednesday, 29 May 2019, 8:00 PM ETTuesday, June 4th, will mark the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amendment, which was ratified on August 18th, 1920, granted women (but not all women) the right to vote. This right was called “women’s suffrage.” It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Act of 1965 that all women, including African American women in many parts of the south and many indigenous women, finally achieved this right. Today, nearly 200 years after women began speaking out for equality, we still find a society where many women are struggling for their rights, are often met with sexism and misogyny and still find the proverbial “glass ceiling” inhibiting their full pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Are their lessons that women of the 21st century can learn from the original suffragists of the 19th century? Can examining their struggle offer new inspiration for today’s women and also open the hearts and minds of men?My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, April Young Bennett, did just that. April Young Bennett began studying the lives of suffragists to inform her own activism. As Communications Director for Voices for Utah Children, she worked within nationwide networks of advocates for changes to state and federal policies affecting children and parents such as pay equity, healthcare, education and juvenile justice. April Young Bennett was a founding organizer and spokesperson for the activist group Ordain Women, which has been featured in respected news outlets such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. Ordain Women collaborates with the Women’s Ordination Conference (Catholic), Ordain Women Now (Lutheran), Women of the Wall (Jewish), the Parliament of World Religions Women’s Task Force and other networks of religious feminists. April produces and hosts the Religious Feminism Podcast, which provides a forum for feminists across a variety of faith communities and secular feminist organizations to learn about each other and work together toward common goals. She blogs about Mormon feminism at the-exponent.com, which averages 40,000 unique visitors per month. She joins me this week to discuss her new book, Ask a Suffragist: Stories and Wisdom from America’s First Feminists.
The following nomination letter was written by Lane Findlay, Lieutenant in the Weber County Sheriff's Office: Snowbird – On Tuesday, June 9th 2015, at the Utah Children’s Justice Symposium/Utah Prosecution Council Domestic Violence Conference, Detective Stephanie Tatton received the 2015 Utah Children’s Justice Center Program Multidisciplinary Team Award. Each year, this honor is bestowed upon one of Utah’s child abuse professionals who demonstrate tremendous commitment and courage as they work in the trenches of child abuse investigation and prosecution. They are truly the unsung heroes in Utah’s fight to protect its children. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the dedication it takes to be an effective member of the Children’s Justice Center Multidisciplinary Team. Detective Tatton, who was recently promoted to sergeant, has served the past eight years as an investigator assigned to work cases involving crimes against children. Her unwavering commitment and professionalism has made a tremendous difference in the lives of the many children and families she has come in contact with. Although Sgt. Tatton has been re-assigned as a patrol supervisor, she continues to be a strong advocate for child abuse victims through her involvement with the Children's Justice Center (CJC) in Ogden. Outside of her regular duties, she volunteers many hours at the CJC, assisting with child abuse investigations and organizing charitable events. At a recent fundraiser called Starry Nights, Sgt. Tatton was instrumental in helping the CJC raise over $13,000 in cash donations for drug testing for children who are endangered. She also helped organize the silent auction which helped raise thousands of dollars more for the center. In addition to the countless hours of volunteer work at the CJC event, she personally sponsored a table at the gala for all of the members of her patrol crew to be able to attend. Sgt. Tatton's passion and commitment to public service, in particularly to the children of abuse, goes above and beyond her duty. Her exemplary service has and will continue to touch the lives of many victims, giving them a strong voice in their pursuit of justice and healing.
