My guest today is Sir Ronald Cohen, often referred to as "the father of British venture capital" and "the father of impact investing." As Co-founder and President of GSG Impact, Sir Ronald is leading a revolution to transform how the financial world measures and reports a company's value by including its net impact on people and our planet. Early in his career, he co-founded Apax Partners, one of the oldest and largest international private equity firms. His ability to anticipate market shifts – a principle which he calls “the second bounce of the ball” – was key to his success. However, he saw his financial success was also increasing inequality, prompting him to create new tools like the Social Impact Bond, which ties investor returns to measurable social benefits.Through his latest initiative, the International Foundation for Valuing Impact (IFVI), Sir Ronald has established rules to standardize impact valuation in financial terms, akin to how GAAP standardizes financial disclosures for US publicly traded companies.IFVI is working to establish a global framework that quantifies social and environmental impact in monetary terms. The foundation provides open-source data, methodologies, and valuation metrics to ensure transparency and consistency in impact measurement across industries.IFVI is already gaining traction among major financial institutions, corporations, and regulators. By integrating impact into core business and investment strategies, IFVI aims to reshape markets – ensuring that companies reducing carbon emissions, improving labor conditions, and fostering social equity are rewarded not just ethically, but financially. This marks a fundamental shift in capitalism, one that aligns profit with purpose and empowers investors to accelerate the transition toward a more sustainable and equitable global economy. With over $40 trillion invested in ESG and impact funds today, he believes we are on the brink of a financial revolution – one where companies are no longer valued solely by net income as we do today but by the total financial value that their operations contribute to people and our planet.Tune in and meet the true visionary of impact investing!—Connect with SRI360°:PODCASTWEBSITEXFACEBOOKSign up for the free weekly email update—Key Takeaways:Intro (00:00)Sir Ronald's background (03:48)Discovering venture capital at Harvard (13:17)Founding Apax Partners and shaping the European VC landscape (19:28)Co-founding IFVI (33:16)The potential for impact accounting to drive innovation (45:41)The “brown-to-green” transition and the role of impact measurement (54:09)The challenges of aligning IFVI's methodology globally (01:04:23)Sir Ronald's advice for impact investors (01:09:05)Rapid Fire Questions (01:17:19)Contact info (01:20:22)—Additional Resources:Connect with Sir Ronald Cohen:

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Thursday, January 16, 2025. This is Nelson John, let's get started. A group of prominent investors, including Switzerland's Partners Group AG, Canada's Brookfield Asset Management, and KKR, are eyeing a stake in Indian internet services provider Excitel Broadband. They're part of a $200 million equity deal and have signed non-disclosure agreements as part of the process managed by Avendus Capital. Other potential investors like Macquarie Group, Apax Partners, and Actis Llp are also in the mix, reflecting strong interest in the company, which was founded in 2015 and now serves 1 million subscribers across 55 cities. Utpa Bhaskar reports on the potential acquisition of Excitel.  The Indian government is considering a revision of customs duties and procedures in specific sectors for the FY26 Union budget. This initiative aims to make it more appealing for manufacturers of finished goods to also produce components or semi-finished products, thereby enhancing trade ease and export competitiveness. Particularly, the electronics and consumer goods segments, including air conditioners and washing machines, might see duty revisions to encourage domestic production of components, according to Gireesh Chandra Prasad and Dhirendra Kumar's report. This strategy follows the successful model used in the mobile phone industry, where increased customs duty on finished products spurred local component manufacturing. Travel companies are buzzing with excitement as the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is expected to draw a staggering 400 million visitors over the next six weeks. This year's festival is extra special, marking a 144-year cycle milestone, and it's triggered a massive demand spike for travel and accommodation. Responding swiftly, Air India has launched daily flights from Delhi to meet the soaring demand, with airfare prices shooting up significantly. Hotels are also seeing a tenfold booking increase, with costs rising across nearby cities like Varanasi, reports Varuni Khosla. Travel agencies, including giants like Thomas Cook, are capitalizing on the surge, rolling out extensive packages that range from basic stays to luxury spiritual retreats. The festival's economic impact is immense, with an expected generation of Rs 2 trillion in revenue, benefiting not just the travel sector but also local businesses across a spectrum of industries. In the chilly fog of the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana, a renewed farmer protest simmers along National Highway 52. Thousands of farmers have braved the elements since February of last year, their resolve unshaken by winter's bite, this time demanding legal backing for Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for their crops. These protests, although less vibrant than the massive gatherings at Delhi's borders in 2020, are deeply rooted in concerns over crop pricing. The government does set MSPs annually for 23 crops, but in reality, consistent purchases at these prices are mostly limited to wheat and rice. Farmers argue this system fails to protect them against market volatility, particularly for crops like groundnuts, soybeans, and moong, where they often receive less than the promised MSP. So, is there an end in sight to these protests? Sayantan Bera tackles that question as he takes a deep dive into the ongoing farmers' protests in today's Long Story. The upcoming Union budget is set to show Indian Railways' operating ratio at its best in five years for FY26, thanks to higher freight revenue and increased government funding. This key efficiency metric, which indicates how much the Railways spend to earn ₹100, is expected to dip below 98% for the first time since FY21, signalling stronger financial health and more room for capital expenditure. This improvement follows a few tough years where the operating ratio often exceeded 98%, highlighting financial strains mainly due to heavy pension liabilities, writes Subhash Narayan. However, from FY23 onwards, a rebound in freight and passenger revenues has bolstered the Railways' finances, suggesting a sustainable recovery is in the cards.

Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today we have the operator's view on the show. We bring in someone who rose up the ranks of a private equity-backed software company to be CEO of that company — ECi Software Solutions — that now generates over $500M in revenue and $200M in EBITDA.We welcome Ron Books, now an Operating Partner at Carlyle and the CEO at Net Health, a Carlyle portfolio company. He also sits on a number of boards for Carlyle. He is now the Chairman and is the former CEO of ECi Software Solutions, a leading global provider of cloud-based software for SMEs, which he successful sold to Leonard Green & Partners for a multi-billion dollar exit. Ron started with ECi when it was a startup company and rose in the organization to serve as VP Sales, then COO, and then CEO, a position which he held from 2009 to 2021. While serving as CEO, Ron and his team developed and executed a strategic plan that included overseeing 46 M&A transactions and a successful software license to cloud migration across nearly a dozen platforms. They received investment from — and sold the business to — Insight Partners, Carlyle, Apax Partners, Goldman Sachs, and most recently, Leonard Green & Partners. Under his leadership as CEO, ECi grew from less than $50M in revenue to over $500M and a sale of the company in 2020 at a multi-billion dollar valuation.Ron has all the hallmarks of a successful entrepreneur — energetic yet thoughtful, a tireless work ethic, the ability to connect with customers and employees, and loyalty to both customers and employees.Ron and I had a fascinating conversation about what it takes to build a great company and culture and how to work with private equity given that he's been on both sides of the table. And then I, and my partner Alan Patricof - he has been an investor for the past 50 years, starting a large private equity firm called Apax Partners, and then Greycroft, which is a multi-billion dollar venture firm - was also in intrigued by this issue of how do we get older Americans starting businesses, people with expertise and wisdom and network and skills. And so we came together to start the fund in the Spring of 2020."   On Innovation in the Longevity Economy "But what we're more interested at Primetime, because we're an early stage investment fund is the amount of innovation going on in the space. And so just to put a bookmark in there, since we launched in summer of 2020, so almost three years ago, we've looked at 1,300 startups that would be included in the longevity economy. This includes healthcare businesses, financial service businesses, consumer and media businesses. There is a lot of new ideas bubbling up because entrepreneurs have recognized, and  all the incumbents of this ecosystem have recognized we need to move faster to build the infrastructure we need to serve an older population."   On Digital Therapeutics "We do not invest in businesses that are in biotech, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, but they are very aggressively investing in solutions in this area ...

We cover becoming an accidental investor, the compelling white space in the senior market, and ending ageism. “I hope we have a society that isn't plagued by obesity and diabetes because people are excited to live longer and are therefore making trade-offs when they're younger to enjoy a longer, healthier life.” – Abby Miller Levy EPISODE GUIDE (LINKS, QUOTES, NOTES, AND BOOKS MENTIONED) https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/primetime-partners-abby-levy  FULL TEXT TRANSCRIPT https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/primetime-partners-abby-levy-transcript/  CHAPTERS This episode is our definitive guide to AgeTech and investing in the future of how we age. In it we cover: (00:00:00) – Introduction (00:03:00) – From business building at OXO and SoulCycle to becoming an accidental investor (00:07:58) – The compelling white space of the senior market (00:19:22) – Focusing on seed to Series A and launching incubations (00:22:15) – Consumer behavior and employment opportunities in the aging population (00:29:16) – Maximizing today vs. planning for tomorrow (00:37:18) – Housing opportunities for the senior market (00:43:15) – Ending ageism, focusing on preventative healthcare, and embracing multiple careers ABOUT PRIMETIME PARTNERS Abby Miller Levy is Co-founder and Managing Partner of Primetime Partners, which is a new venture capital firm that specializes in AgeTech, or investing in technology around the future of how we age. As you'll hear in this interview, the latest data and statistics around aging are almost too hard to believe. Here are just two data points. As of 2007, it's expected that about half of all babies born will live to be over 100 or become what are called centenarians. And by 2024, it's expected that workers aged 55 or older will represent a full 25% of the nation's workforce, with the fastest annual growth rates among those aged 65 and older. And yet, before Primetime Partners was founded by Abby Levy and venture legend Alan Patricof of Greycroft and Apax Partners fame, there were no venture firms focused solely on aging and enabling the technologies, products, and businesses we'll need to support an aging population.

Alan Patricof (@alanjpatricof) is a venture capital pioneer with a career spanning more than 50 years and showing no signs of slowing down. The 87-year-old started his third venture capital business nearly two years ago called Primetime Partners, wrote his first book published this year, and this week he'll be attending Burning Man, and in the fall, he'll run the New York City Marathon for the sixth time. He joins Julia La Roche on this episode for a wide-ranging conversation on life and investing. Patricof started in venture capital at 36 in 1970, before a venture capital industry existed. His Patricof & Co. Ventures Inc. was the predecessor to Apax Partners, one of the largest private equity firms today. In 2006, at 72, Patricof founded Greycroft Partners, a venture capital firm that led numerous investments in digital media companies. He has since left Greycroft to take on the founding partner and chairperson role at Primetime Partners. At Primetime Partners, Patricof, who said he plans to live until 114, is focused on what he calls the "ageless generation" — those over the age of 60 that are part of the fastest-growing part population. Since its inception two years ago, Primetime Partners has deployed capital across 25 investments with a focus on seed and early-stage investments in products, services, and experiences for the aging, including aging in place, financial security for retirees, care management, longevity health services, and consumer experiences. Primetime has also backed older entrepreneurs building companies, with 18% of its founders over 50. With his new book, "No Red Lights," Patricof hopes to encourage the older generation "not to pack it all in and go to the golf course and retire." He also hopes to share lessons with the younger generation to be open to new opportunities and live a life of curiosity.

Not one to sit still at the young age of 88 years old, he is now launching his third firm to much fanfare - Primetime Partners - focusing on a weirdly overlooked consumer base of 60+ year consumers. Impact Hustlers proudly welcomes one of the pioneers of venture capital and impact investing, Sir Richard Cohen, or Sir Ronnie. Having been in the finance industry for decades, he now has the well-deserved distinction of being known as the Father of British Venture Capital. He has also founded investment firms and companies that are regarded as leaders in the social impact space.Sir Ronnie had an interesting childhood, leaving Egypt as a refugee at age 11 and moving to the UK. From his humble beginnings, his dedication and hard work landed him in Oxford and, later on, Harvard Business School. Interestingly, at age 53, he one day sat down with the management of Apax Partners, the investment firm he founded that now has over 50 billion dollars under management, and announced he would be leaving after seven years to focus on social issues. He was then tapped by the British Treasury to lead a task force on poverty, which led him on the path of impact. He shares how luck played a major role in his life, the valuable insights he learned throughout the years, what drove him to impact investing, and more. He also shares snippets from his book, Impact: Reshaping Capitalism to Drive Real Change, which is a worthwhile read, by the way, as well as the three major forces that are working to make the world a better place. This is truly an episode you won't want to miss.Sir Ronnie's key lessons and quotes from this episode were:“Our success or our failure, the types of challenges we have to go through are not all within our control. And once you understand that, you become a lot stronger in meeting the challenges that come your way.” (11:27)“There's a greater purpose to your being on earth than just continuing to make more money.” (17:50)“The profit motive needs to be guided by impact. Making money and not worrying about the harm you do is no longer possible.” (24:51)“Mandatory reporting, use of accounting to measure impact, and measuring both social and environmental impact. If we do that, it will be a historical frontier for capitalism and for society.” (31:06)“Bring impact into your thinking. It's the future. You will do better financially, and you will improve the world.” (35:41)“Those who refuse to understand the importance of impact for the future of their businesses will once again be left behind.” (37:40)In this episode, we also talked about:An overview of Sir Ronnie's journey, his childhood, and education (2:52)Luck and how it helped Sir Ronnie get to where he is today (10:52)Why 1998 was a memorable year for Sir Ronnie (16:06)Integrating impact into the core of every business model (24:41)Sir Ronnie's book and social impact bonds (32:39)The world in 10 years according to Sir Ronnie (36:13)Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/impacthustlers)

בגזרה הציבורית - שותף מנהל ב- ,State of mind Ventures 1,2, שותף ב- Apax Partners, מנכ"ל בז"ן, דירקטור ב- Cymptom, Veego, Wizer, Perception point, ABS Shva Automatic Bank Services Ltd, Magal Security Systems Ltd ו- Discount Investment Corp Ltd בעבר.

Sir Ronald is the Co-Founder of Apax Partners and is widely referred to as the 'father of social investment' (as well as being a key figure in shaping British venture capital). His 2020 book, 'Impact: Reshaping Capitalism to Drive Real Change', was a Sunday Times Bestseller and shortlisted in the Financial Times' 'Best Economics Books of 2020' rankings. Sir Ronald Cohen's extraordinary story begins in Egypt in 1956 where the Suez crisis has taken place and Egyptian nationalism is on the rise, forcing his family to leave everything and flee to England, not even speaking the language. Armed only with ambition and hope and hard work, he gets into grammar school, wins a scholarship to Oxford, then to Harvard Business school and moves on to build one of the largest venture capital firms in the world, Apax. Over the last 20 years, he has been invited to advise governments, chaired the G8 task force for impact investment, helping drive the revolution to rethink the way we invest. Along the way he has authored 3 books, the most recent being 'Impact: Reshaping Capitalism to Drive Real Change'. He has sat on the University of Oxford Investment Committee, been a member of the Board of Dean's Advisors at Harvard Business School and Vice-Chairman of Ben Gurion University. He talks about the opportunities created by attending Oxford and Harvard, his journey to help create the UK Venture Capital industry, co-founding Apax, and the role private equity plays in developed economies, including discussing some of its perceived drawbacks. The conversation moves to entrepreneurship, and his first book, 'The Second Bounce of the Ball – Turning Risk into Opportunity' and the critical role job-creation will play in the post-COVID landscape. This leads to his thoughts on the profound importance Impact Investing must and will play, and its essential role in the evolution of capitalism. Specifically he discusses the need to have company accounts properly measure impact and how this sub-sector of the investment management industry is accelerating, as evidenced by the growth of the Social Impact Bond (SIB) and Harvard's impact-weighted accounts. The conversation moves on to discuss how and what Governments should do, the evolution of philanthropy in this environment, and advice for young people thinking about careers, and finally his perspectives on an extraordinary journey. In a meeting hosted by the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy in 2007, the term impact investing was coined. Yet seven years prior to that, in 2001, Sir Ronald Cohen (just Ronald Cohen at the time) was requested by the UK Treasury to establish the Social Investment Task Force (SITF). The SITF was tasked with exploring the ways in which the UK could create wealth, spur economic growth, and improve the lives of its most vulnerable people at the same time. It was his work here where he and his colleagues developed much of their thinking on impact investing. Only a year after establishing the SITF, Ronnie (as he prefers to be called) would become Sir Ronnie, not for his work in impact investing but for his three decades of work essentially bringing venture capital to the UK. Ronnie was only 26 years old when he co-founded Apax Partners, a private equity firm that would grow to manage $50B in assets with offices across the globe. By 2013, then Prime Minister David Cameron asked Ronnie to lead the G8 Social Investment Task Force (G8T) in order to "catalyze a global market in social impact investment." Not long after that he was then asked by the British Government to lead an effort to expand the G8T further globally and resulted in him establishing The Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (GSG) in 2015. During this time, Sir Ronnie also contributed to creating the world's first Social Impact Bond which aimed to reduce recidivism rates at the Peterborough Penitentiary in the UK. He and his colleague's findings on SIBs were articulated in a now-famous report "Impact Investment: The Invisible Heart of the Markets" which kicked off a movement to spread the idea of impact investing across the world. All of that amounts to one hell of an impressive career by any standard but especially for a refugee who fled Egypt as a result of the Suez Crisis in the 1950s. At 11 yrs old, Ronnie and his parents arrived in the UK with just a single suitcase each and Ronnie clutching his precious stamp collection in his arms. Therefore, it is my great honour to welcome Sir Ronald Cohen to the podcast. This episode is sponsored by Cronofy, the scheduling platform for business and HR professionals. Don’t let impersonal and lengthy interview scheduling stop you from acquiring top talent! Transform your interview scheduling by offering slots based on real-time availability while staying in control of who can book times in your calendar. https://www.cronofy.com/rectech Recruiting Technology headlines High5, has launched a new recruiter marketplace and talent community platform that aims to disrupt traditional staffing methods and transform how companies get work done.   The High5 platform creates a global, digital talent supply chain by bringing together an open marketplace of talent and global networks of independent recruiters and subject matter experts who vet and submit talent to jobs on High5. A major differentiator for High5 is how trust and high-quality outcomes are delivered to all users. Each candidate, recruiter, talent supplier, customer, and job are vetted and verified before entering the supply chain.    When paired with High5’s talent engagement technology and global payrolling capabilities, these talent supply innovations are capable of delivering any candidate, with any skill, on any form of work,  to any employer or managed staffing program, anywhere in the world. This ALL-talent and ALL-work approach is a distinguishing characteristic of High5. From full-time to part-time, contract, contract-to-hire, SOW, on-site or remote, from gig-work to big work — it all gets done with High5.   Traditional staffing services and talent platforms used to find talent globally are fragmented and limited in the breadth of services they provide,” Robert Merritt, High5’s Chief Revenue Officer, explains. “They are limited in the vetting and curation of talent they deliver employers and managed staffing programs. Traditional methods promote speed over quality at the employer’s and candidate’s expense. These methods result in poor talent quality, wasted time and money, long fill times, and a hiring manager and candidate experience that is less than desirable.”   https://hrtechfeed.com/high5-launches-new-recruiter-marketplace/   Paradox, the leading conversational AI platform helping global talent acquisition teams automate recruiting tasks like screening, interview scheduling, and candidate communications, announced today the acquisition of Spetz.io, an Israeli startup helping clients like EY and Sodastream modernize candidate communications. The acquisition highlights Paradox’s strategic investment in global innovation and world-class client services, said Paradox founder and CEO Aaron Matos. But it wasn’t just about creating another R&D center. Just as important, Matos said the Spetz team’s vision, mission, and values closely aligned with Paradox. “This acquisition is all about aligning with incredibly smart people who share our passion for building products that recruiting teams love,” Matos said. “We were impressed with the Spetz team’s growth, and even more impressed with their vision for what we can build together.” Yam Dvir, Spetz’s co-founder and CEO, said the feeling was mutual. “When we met with the Paradox team we immediately saw a massive opportunity to build something bigger than ourselves,” said Dvir. “Combining our expertise with Paradox’s vision and momentum as a clear category leader is really one of those ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’ opportunities. We can’t wait to get started accelerating Paradox’s vision for a future where recruiting is frictionless, elegant, and people-centric.” https://hrtechfeed.com/paradox-acquires-israeli-chatbot-spetz-io/   PAIRIN, the workforce journey company, today announced the official close of its Series A investment round, now totaling $4.36M. This round builds upon the $2.1 million raised in June.   The COVID-19 pandemic has pulled back the curtain on the challenges that come with navigating and delivering services like unemployment, career planning and education, provided by states, education institutions and workforce programs. These services are often difficult to use, inflexible, not personalized for users and costly to replace. PAIRIN helps ensure end users can quickly and easily navigate access to services like career assistance and college planning through its innovative My Journey platform. “Not only are individuals struggling in the workforce because of the pandemic, but many government and workforce agencies are also facing challenges with budget cuts and consolidation,” said Michael Simpson, CEO and founder, PAIRIN. “We are very grateful to our investors for their continued support. These new funds will help ensure that we can bring the most efficient and intuitive technology to workforce and government agencies across the country…   https://hrtechfeed.com/pairin-gets-4-36m-series-a-funding-to-accelerate-delivery-of-solutions-to-aid-americas-workforce/   Paycor, a provider of SaaS Payroll and Human Capital Management (HCM) software, today announced that it has received commitments for $270 million in new investment co-led by Neuberger Berman, on behalf of several other investors. Paycor is partner to more than 40,000 medium and small-sized businesses.
