Women and minorities continue to be underrepresented in patent issuing and less often are granted credit for their innovations. We examine why this is, the impacts it has, and what can be done about it. Patents, and the protection of inventor rights, was deemed important enough that when the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1788 it included what is now known as the intellectual property clause: Article I, Section 8, Clause 8, which reads “[The Congress shall have Power . . . ] To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.” Our guest in this episode is Lisa Larrimore Ouellette, whose latest research looks at inequality in the patent system and how that impacts innovation. This week we are talking about levering social media for maximum career impact. Social media has always been a point of contention in the career world. On the one hand you have sites that are central to your career and are built to help you advance and on the other hand you have sites that promote you making a fool of yourself or making poor decisions. In this episode I get deep about social media and my thoughts on the future. Along with my opinion, I also outline 3 common types of LinkedIn profiles for experienced professionals: 1. The expert. 2. The manager. 3. The thought leader. These three profile types aren't the only types you will see, but they are the most common. The key to creating a great LinkedIn profile is to understand where you are headed in your career and write a profile that supports that path, along with posting content that supports where you are headed. Your LinkedIn profile is a marketing tool. Within 10-15 seconds of looking at your profile, I should be able to figure out what you do and where you want to go. A recent Forbes article published research by the Carnegie Institute of Technology which indicated only 15% of financial success actually comes from knowledge or technical skills. The remaining 85% of success comes from the ability to effectively communicate and negotiate with others, and a lot has to do with body language and habits. We sometimes have habits and act in certain ways that we do not even recognise in ourselves, and these behaviours can have either a positive or a negative effect on the way others see us. It is also easier for us to recognize these certain behaviours in others than in ourselves. Have you ever had a colleague, boss, or co-worker where you said to yourself, “oh I hate when he or she does that” or ”here we go again, I knew she/he would react that way”. Well people could be reacting to you in the same way and you may not know it. This episode explores behaviours that are often recognizable and can impact our careers.
