What is a servant leader? How can we be more submissive to what our path is? Today's guest John Handelsman talks about learning how to follow first, as it may not come naturally to us. He did not grow up in a faith-forward family, so hearing his journey to faith and leadership is very inspiring. Enjoy today's episode.    In this episode, you'll discover…  Why Win at Home First? (1:20) What is the key trait to winning at work and at home? (2:50) Why was John's way not working anymore? (6:55) How did John do strategic planning differently after being committed to God? (19:40)   John's Bio: With nearly 40 years of experience in specialty finance, CRE, private equity, strategic leadership, and consulting, John has a proven track record of private business investing, and in leading such businesses to success and growth in value. Most recently, he was CEO of Commonwealth Ventures, where he led the successful and over-subscribed $29M growth capital seed round for CRDV, the national development arm of COhatch. Prior to Commonwealth, John was the Chairman and CEO of The Garage Group, a boutique innovation consultancy to the F500 in the CPG, Food & Beverage and Financial Services industries, which was sold in a successful management buyout in June 2021. His PE experience came as co-lead on a $40M raise of Fund II for Brixey & Meyer Capital, where he also served as Operating Partner for both Funds I and II, including leading the establishment of governance and strategic planning, and serving as Chairman on many of the boards. He was also an Operating Partner for a family office based in Cincinnati, as they started to build their specialty finance portfolio. John won EY's Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1999 during his time as Founder, President, and CEO of The Vaughn Group, Inc., a Cincinnati-based commercial equipment finance company for which he raised multiple rounds of private and institutional capital and that he successfully exited to a public bank in 2003. For over 20 years, John has and continues to serve on many for-profit and faith-based nonprofit governing and advisory boards.   What's Next?  Are you struggling to win at both home and work? Today we're approaching the topic of investing in biodiversity, by speaking to Nigel Sharp, he's a farmer, but he's also a businessman and a fund manager. And over the past two decades he's been a pioneer in the ‘Business of Biodiversity'. Nigel is a pioneer in this space, the Tiverton investment vehicle has developed a whole range of agricultural projects on land holdings all over Australia, and all with the regeneration of biodiversity at their core. But that's not all. He seeded the Dragonfly venture fund, to support early stage climate-tech and regen-ag startups. And, he founded the Odonata Foundation, an environmental charity working to save species from extinction. Now before we dive into the episode I want say a big thank you to the sponsor of this series, and that's GreenCollar. GreenCollar is a developer and innovator of environmental market solutions, they recognise the power of putting a financial value on nature, as an incentive to drive sustainable land management, cleaning up our waterways and avoiding further loss of biodiversity and animal species. Since launching more than a decade ago, the company has become Australia's largest developer of nature-based carbon credit projects, and they're pushing the market forward with schemes like ‘Reef Credits', which target improved water quality at The Great Barrier Reef. And their latest innovation is NaturePlus, a new form of biodiversity credits that aim to protect and restore ecosystems around the world. They're measuring biodiversity outcomes on the ground, with a scientifically rigorous and verifiable methodology, that puts a value on natural capital, to enable investment in the conservation of high value ecosystems. Reach out to the team at www.GreenCollar.com.au to find out more. Plus, you can find all the show notes and links on the website at www.johntreadgold.com. David is as purpose driven and intentional a venture investor, and maybe, a person, as you'll ever meet. The letters "DA", the first two in his name, mean "gives", in Spanish and his life is testament that David is the ultimate "giver" and helper of others. In this conversation he shares his strongly held beliefs that locals in Latin American countries will soon begin to see themselves first at "Latin Americans" and secondarily so, as natives of their home countries (Chile, in David's case). He also shares his deep seated belief in investing and nurturing companies that truly create sustained impact and good for the world. Equilibrium Capital has gathered over $4.5 billion across its platform of sustainability driven investment strategies. Equilibrium became one of the largest impact native investment firms by not referring to itself as an impact investor, but instead by developing strategies for institutional investors wherein sustainability drove the financial returns. Equilibrium created a series of thematic financial “products” that appealed to institutional investors – such as Equilibrium's Carbon Transition Infrastructure and Controlled Environment Foods strategies. Founder Dave Chen has been a professor at Northwestern's Kellogg Business School for 13 years where he talks about “building an army” of sustainable investors by teaching and encouraging students to pursue sustainable investing.

"Daniel Matalon is the founder of #IsThereEnough, a provocative new conversation about the intersection of survival economics and social justice. He is also the co-founder of Impact Launchpad, a UK-based venture studio for social impact incubation and development. Working from a book, a conversation, and a unique social research experiment that has taken him to 22 countries, Mr. Matalon is asserting that humanity's biggest existential threat is not climate change, tribalism, or inequality but our inability to make agreement with each other at the level we require to address our challenges. His upcoming title, The First Agreement, is a historical and future-leaning look at economics, scarcity, and survival, that suggests that our drivers of incentive can be measurably built around human beings at the center of our economies, rather than the assets and resources we measure them by today." In this episode, Daniel and I discuss what he's adding new to The Conversation, Buckminster Fuller, our warlike conversation type, the most surprising response to the question of "isthereenough?", power, war, common identity, laws and agreement, suffering, the IDW, conversations on Clubhouse, economic values, global citizens, those who want to make a difference, personal transformation, the life that lives within conversation, the last treaty humanity will ever need to sign, a decentralized approach to self-government, collaboration, awareness, taking care of humanity as a way of taking care of the planet, building a world game not a world order, making the world work, hopefulness and much more. (don't) Waste Water!
[Extract] "The future is already there, it's just not equally distributed" - John Robinson - Mazarine Ventures

(don't) Waste Water!

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2022 0:59

John is a Partner and Co-Founder of Mazarine Ventures. Mazarine is an impact investor backing young technology companies with innovations that address some aspects of water risk, including quality and quantity.  When you're working in the Water Industry, it is tempting to go for broad quotes like "Water is Life." Sure, that's true. But it might be a bit too general of a statement to be translated into concrete business. That's why John and his founding team at Mazarine have been clear from Day Zero when they wrote their investment thesis: in the Age of Climate Change and its extreme events, galloping urbanization, or increased water scarcity, water is a risk. New technologies can help our World mitigate that risk, and this, in all the dimensions of the ESG framework. Hence, speeding up the time-to-market of these emerging solutions induces an impact, turning Mazarine Ventures into an Impact Investor. In my conversation with John, we'll explore how that twist in the definition of water-related challenges and opportunities translates into concrete steps and how Mazarine articulates its actions from its Labs to its Fund I, Fund II, and Bluehouse investment funds.  You'll get to understand why the exit is fully part of the impact process, which type of capital is the most important at which stage of a company's development, and how Mazarine ambitions to find entrepreneurs that have been to the future and came back.  There's much more to unpack in this week's conversation with John, so we'll swiftly take off. But while you buckle up, if you like what you hear, please remember to share that episode with a colleague, a friend, or an entrepreneur you know that shall definitely reach out to Mazarine! Steal their phone, subscribe them to the podcast, and come tell me on LinkedIn what you liked or didn't like about it! Come on do it, and I'll meet you on the other side. Find out how Mazarine Ventures sees Impact Investing as a tool to mitigate the Water Risk!
