In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with musician Brent Paschke to dive into his music career and work in music education. Brent Paschke is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and author based in Los Angeles, California. He is best known as Pharrell Williams' guitarist, having worked with the singer/songwriter/producer since 2001. Paschke accompanies Williams in the studio and on tour, and his guitar performances appear on such Pharrell projects as G I R L (2015 Grammy winner for Best Urban Contemporary Album) and Hidden Figures: The Album (2017 Golden Globe nominee for Best Original Score). Brent has also worked with Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Chris Brown, New Kids on the Block, Kelly Clarkson, and many other artists. We talk about his time with Spymob, the educational materials he's developed, and why rhythm is such a crucial element in music. We also explore the origins of the album Memphis and how traditional country music has influenced it. Brent shares his experiences working with various bands and artists, including Spymob and N.E.R.D. He emphasizes the importance of staying true to their unique sound without compromising artistic integrity. We also discuss his transition to remote recording sessions and the advantages and challenges that come with it. Brent opens up about his working process with Pharrell Williams and the trust they've built over the years. We also discuss his recent work with Johnny Smoke and their upcoming album.Thank you for tuning in! If you have any questions, feedback, or ideas for the show, please get in touch with me at brad@thebandwichtapes.com. And please spread the word about the show! Our theme song, "Playcation," was written by Mark Mundy.
An album that was seminal for John and one he had tried to get on the show forever, we take a long look at N.E.R.D.'s debut album "In Search Of...", an album that is as horny as it is confusing. The Neptunes were on an insane run in this time period, and so stepping away from that to make a nu-metal-adjacent rap-rock album with a high school friend who was originally known as just a guy who danced at their shows was certainly a choice. And there's a lot of strange choices here, from choosing a Minneapolis rock/soul band called Spymob as their backing band (who Pharrell found by hearing a demo and immediately declared they were the best band in the world) to an appearance by a guy named "Lee Harvey" who never appears on any recorded thing again ever and no one knows who he is to the deeply, deeply, sleazy horniness of the lyrics, it's a wild ride and an album that couldn't have existed in any other time period. Plus, you know the Pharrell quotes are insane. It's a fun one. If you want some more fun ones, head on over to our Patreon, where $4/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every month. Last month, our pal Jesse Farrar from YKS and GoK joined us to dissect the infamous Korn South Park episode, which came out almost 30 years ago and is also a very wild ride that couldn't have existed in any other time period. We also have an exclusive Discord that's a lot of fun, merch discounts, and you can donate and have us listen to a song or album of your choosing. Check it out!
Get ready for an epic episode! Nate kick things off by giving a bit of the history behind the birth of the Yo! That's My Jawn project as a whole and how this episode is the full culmination of that vision (3:21). Then he sits down with Eric Fawcett, Brent Paschke, and Christian Twigg of the band Spymob (6:00). They discuss the early days of Spymob, getting signed and dropped by Epic/Sony, Christian joining the band, the evolution of the songs that would become Sitting Around Keeping Score, meeting Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo and signing to Star Trak, recording the live backing tracks of “In Search Of…”, Mark Ronson's FADER podcast, forming the N*E*R*D live show, touring and opening for N*E*R*D, the genius of Pharrell, being ahead of the curve, L.A. Reid's decision to drop them from Arista, releasing the album through Ruthless Records, and the more recent rerelease, all before entering The Jawntlet!! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ytmj/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ytmj/support

Brent Paschke was co-founder of Spymob and is best known as Pharrell Williams’ guitarist, having worked with Pharrell since 2001. Brent was introduced to me by Linda Helms, who is a friend of Brent’s. Brent says that, “Music was just in me.” He knew the first day he got a guitar when he was about 12 years old that playing guitar is what he wanted to do with his life. He was always drawn to art and music, so he understood kids who struggled with school. As Brent got more into production, be began to see a lot of kids wanting to be in production, but there wasn’t much available in the schools. So, Brent started Tuniversity, to teach how to use an iOS device and the Garageband app to deconstruct and reconstruct songs. Brent says that the computer is really the instrument these days and he wants kids to be able to tap into music because you can really find yourself and learn how to express yourself through music. He says, as we get more comfortable with music, it is better for us. Brent also does a lot of mindful meditation, which parallels with playing music. Music provides such life lessons, he says. You can learn to forgive mistakes and yourself through music; it teaches you to be present, just like mindful meditation. “That’s life; it’s all about being present, forgiving, loving, caring. It all lines up with music, it’s all in synch with music.”
