On the 65th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Shout It Out Loudcast Hall of Famer, Jeff Trott review the 1993 classic Hip-Hop album by Snoop Doggy Dogg, "Doggystyle." This is ARC's first Hip-Hop album review. The debut album from Snoop Doggy Dogg was highly anticipated after Snoop's appearance on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" just one year earlier. The album was produced famously by Dr. Dre and was a breakthrough for G Funk style of Hip-Hop. The album features many contributions, including, Dr. Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, The D.O.C., Warren G, Nate Dogg, Daz, Korrupt, Lady Of Rage and more. The album went immediately to #1 US Billboard album charts and went on to become 4x Platinum and eventually selling 11 million albums worldwide. The album is known for the legendary rap skills of Snoop and the beats from Dre, which were revolutionary. The album catapulted Snoop Doggy Dogg into a super stardom celebrity status. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew.  This was Zeus' pick. Snoop Dogg, (AKA Calvin Broadus) has worn many hats: inmate, pimp, Martha Stewart's BFF. In 1994, Snoop was the biggest name in hip hop, yet his career was about to be derailed just as it was taking off due to the murder of Philip Woldemariam, a murder that Snoop was being charged with. The streets that made Snoop, the streets he came up on and that infiltrated the raps he made and the smooth style he patented, were the very same streets he could not leave behind. It was a diverse mix of genres and artists, with dance hits, grunge bands, rap, r'n'b, alternative rock, adult-contemporary ballads, and even some folk-pop indie darlings piercing through the noise and topping the charts. Wu-Tang Clan released their debut album, "Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers" on Nov 9th; & on the same day, A Tribe Called Quest released their 3rd album (& arguably their greatest album), "Midnight Marauders." Two weeks later on the 23rd of that month, Death Row Records released Snoop Doggy Dogg's long anticipated debut album, "Doggystyle." All three projects became some of the most timeless works of art within the genre, helping to usher in a Golden Era of Hip Hop & pushing the culture forward. B. Cox and J. Owe look back at at the momentous occasion of Snoop Doggy Dogg's classic debut album Doggystyle as it turns 30. Fresh off the heels of his breakthrough performance on several tracks on Dr. Dre's The Chronic released not even a year prior, he set to set the game on fire with what was, to that point, the most highly anticipated debut for a new hip-hop artist. Working hard with Dr. Dre and a handful of fellow Death Row Records collaborators such Daz and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage, the DOC, RBX, Warren G and Nate Dogg, the young Long Beach emcee was looking to top all expectations bestowed upon him. In spades, he delivered. Along a three hugely successful singles in "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)", "Gin and Juice" and "Doggy Dogg World", Snoop dropped 54 minutes of G-Funk laced fire with his trademark, lazy, yet casual and sharp flow and lyrics that served as the backdrop to a growing hip-hop and pop culture phenomenon. His infectious hooks, what would be become classic and quotable bars, the outlandish and even vulgar skits and humor all made the album a a part of popular culture and lexicon and still lingers to this day. It all played a part of a dominant two-to-three years of Snoop being recognized as the hottest rapper in the game and one of the biggest stars in music. The debut numbers were unprecedented. It sold over 800K its first week and by the end of the year, it was approaching 2 million records sold. As of today, it stands as 7x RIAA platinum certified. It is widely known today as such: 1) The biggest and most anticipated debut album of any hip-hop album that exceeded such hype 2) One of the most influential albums of any genre released in the last 30 years and 3) Universally accepted as a classic, a West Coast living landmark and legacy that defined 90s West Coast hip-hop and the success of Death Row Records at its peak. The 1990's were filled with high profile criminal trials for some of the most famous entertainers in the world.  Michael Jackson and OJ Simpson headlined a list of extremely public trials, mostly centered in California. One case which seems to be getting lost amidst this glut of criminal prosecutions is the murder charge brought against a young up-and-coming gangster rap artist named Calvin Broadus, who adopted the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg.A few months prior to the release of his first studio album, Broadus was arrested for the murder of rival gang member Philip Woldemariam.  He, along with his bodyguard Malik Lee, argued that Woldemariam was shot and killed in self-defense during an altercation in a public park in Los Angeles. In this episode we discuss affirmative defenses, stand your ground laws, and what happens when a jury deadlocks on only some charges, but arrives at a verdict on others.Paul hopes you enjoy this throwback!

By 1993, it was an alternative world, from MTV to mainstream radio. The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Counting Crows, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Tool, and many more became household names with million selling albums while college radio and indie labels saw bands take off unexpectedly, with hits from The Breeders, The Lemonheads, Mazzy Star, Juliana Hatfield, Letters to Cleo, Ween, and many more. While pop music maintained its position with the likes of Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, and Duran Duran scoring hits, hip-hop was also ascendant with landmark albums from A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop Doggy Dogg, The Wu-Tang Clan, and more. We dive into it all, talking about records that have stood the test of time and those that haven't, albums overlooked upon their release and those best left to the dustbin of history.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - 1993 Medley (Lemon by U2, Animal Nitrate by Suede, Fade Into You by Mazzy Star, 20th Century by Brad, Give Back The Key To My Heart by Uncle Tupelo) Outro - I Feel You by Depeche Mode   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Trigger Warning: The following episode contains descriptions of graphic violence and adult language. Viewer discretion is advised.    Snoop Dogg's hit single, 'Murder was the Case', eerily echoed the events that would eventually lead to him being on trial for first degree murder. Running with Tupac and the rest of his crew, Snoop was easily branded as a gangster, and a pimp.     Now, he's the king of reinvention. He's obviously still the same Snoop Doggy Dogg we knew in the 90s, but without the dangerous lifestyle that could have potentially kept him in prison for life.    Tune into this week's episode about the trial, the rebranding, and what eventually changed Snoop Dogg's mindset.  Follow our podcast so you never miss an episode! The art of collaborating is nothing new. It's actually more prominent than ever, but mainly to mask the lack of talent these days. Guest spots can offer important co-signs, sometimes a necessary one. Whether it's initiated by the label or the artist, “the collabo” was a beautiful thing in the 90s. There's an unwritten rule that if you gave a verse, you'd later receive a verse. The “friends and favors” card was often used back then. Collabos helped gain exposure, the ability to cross-sell and increased your album sales. Sometimes, you jumped started your career off a guest appearance, like Busta Rhymes on ATCQ's Scenario. If you had the pull, the budget or just wanted to put on someone from your own camp, you did that. Classic collabos helped launch the careers of Nas, Big L, Redman, Keith Murray, AZ and Snoop Doggy Dogg. You had memorable collabos verses from Kid Hood (Scenario Remix), LL Cool J (Rampage), Biggie (Flava In Ya Ear Remix), Inspectah Deck (Above The Clouds), Capadonna (Winter Warz), R.A. The Rugged Man (Uncommon Valor), Foxy Brown (I Shot Ya Remix), Kendrick Lamar (Control) and just about every Big Pun, Jadakiss, Andre 3000, Black Thought and Canibus verse.
