Status, Culture and the Modern Mind: What Really Drives Our Lives? With Author David Marx

In a world of rapidly advancing technology and global interconnectedness, the internet has reshaped how we view culture, art, and our own social identities. The rise of large language models (LLMs) and social media has made information and trends accessible in a way that some argue dulls originality and stifles creativity. But could this cultural "stagnation" actually reveal something deeper about human nature? Are our pursuits of status and cultural relevance just relics of an old social order or intrinsic parts of who we are?On today's episode of Tuesdays with Morrisey, host Adam Morrisey delves into these questions with David Marx, the celebrated author of Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style and Status and Culture. Marx, whose expertise in Japanese culture and experience in corporate communications at companies like Google provide a unique perspective, explores the underlying societal forces behind fashion, identity, and status. This episode investigates the complex dance between personal identity and social symbols in an age when trends are as powerful as they are fleeting.Episode Highlights:The Role of Status in Culture: David explains that status underpins human experience, influencing perceptions of “cool” and driving cultural trends. He challenges the notion of “status games,” proposing that status is ingrained in all social interactions.Cultural Stagnation and the Internet's Impact: The Internet has redefined cultural dynamics, eliminating scarcity and creating a more homogeneous global culture. David notes that this shift prioritizes money and visibility over niche expertise, altering the pathways to cultural capital.Fashion as a Lens into Society: David argues that fashion, while often dismissed as superficial, provides a window into societal values. He demonstrates how arbitrary style choices reflect broader social hierarchies and preferences, revealing the mechanics of status in unexpected ways.Reflection on Status and Life Satisfaction: David advises listeners on navigating status-driven goals, suggesting that understanding the mechanics of status can lead to more intentional choices and a more meaningful pursuit of fulfillment.Topics Covered:The impact of status and cultural expectations on personal identityHow the internet has altered scarcity and social dynamicsViewing fashion as a mirror of societal norms and preferencesThe tension between status-seeking and meaningful life satisfactionDavid Marx is an accomplished author and cultural analyst known for his books Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style and Status and Culture. With extensive experience in corporate communications, including a senior role at Google Asia-Pacific, Marx now leads global communications for the Japanese startup Not a Hotel and serves as an outside director at Human Made, Inc. His career spans over two decades, marked by expertise in branding, editorial strategy, and cultural insight across technology, fashion, and media industries.David's perspectives make us rethink what brings real value to our lives in a status-driven world. Say thanks and learn more about our podcast sponsor Omnisend. In this episode of WP Minute+, I sat down with Noel Tock, co-founder of Human Made, a leading Enterprise WordPress agency. We dove into the recent explosive events between Automattic and WP Engine, exploring the implications for the WordPress community and the potential for an independent WordPress.org fork.Noel's unique perspective as both an agency owner and a humanitarian worker in Ukraine provided a fascinating backdrop to our discussion. He emphasized how WordPress remains a critical tool for humanitarian efforts, powering thousands of new charities in crisis zones. This reminder of WordPress's global impact set the tone for our conversation about its future. We explored the current economic challenges facing WordPress agencies in today's competitive landscape. Noel highlighted the need for better product marketing of WordPress in the enterprise space, where it often competes as a "secondary CMS" against more comprehensive suites. This led us to discuss the potential motivations behind Matt Mullenweg's recent actions and what it might mean for the WordPress ecosystem. The core of our conversation revolved around the feasibility and implications of forking WordPress.org. We explored the technical challenges, the potential costs, and the community dynamics that would be involved in such an endeavor. Noel provided valuable insights into what it would take for an independent repository to gain traction, suggesting that incentivizing premium plugin developers could be a key strategy.Key takeaways for WordPress professionals:1 The WordPress ecosystem is facing increased competition and needs better product marketing, especially in the enterprise space.2 Forking WordPress.org would be a massive undertaking, requiring significant resources and community buy-in.3 Clarity on governance and what constitutes meaningful contribution to WordPress is crucial moving forward.4 The relationship between commercial interests and open-source principles in WordPress needs careful navigation.5 WordPress remains a critical tool for global humanitarian efforts, highlighting its importance beyond just business applications.6 The hosting industry may need to reassess its relationship with WordPress in light of recent events.7 Automattic's role as a steward of the open web extends beyond just WordPress, complicating the financial dynamics.⠀Important URLs mentioned:HumanMade.comWordPress.org@noeltockthewpminute.com/support⠀Chapter titles with timestamps:1 [00:00:00] Introduction and WordPress's role in humanitarian efforts2 [00:05:18] The state of WordPress agencies and competition3 [00:15:30] Exploring the possibility of forking WordPress.org4 [00:23:36] The potential for new WordPress marketplaces5 [00:28:00] Matt Mullenweg's role and the future of WordPress governance6 [00:32:30] Implications for the web hosting industry7 [00:34:00] Automattic's broader role in the open web8 [00:37:24] Closing thoughts on focus and learning from experiences ★ Support this podcast ★

Tom Willmot has been a WordPress pioneer and leader in the agency space since co-founding Human Made in 2010. Just in the past year, Human Made has more than doubled its size with a team of 100. Tom is also CEO and co-founder of Altis DXP, Human Made's enterprise WordPress digital experience platform. I caught up with Tom this week to find out what he's thinking about the challenges and opportunities of the enterprise market for WordPress agencies today.Sparked by Magne Ilsaas's ideas in The WordPress Enterprise Paradox, Tom started a Twitter thread and hosted a live discussion this week about the challenges of not having a well-defined brand and market for enterprise WordPress. In the minds of clients beyond the WordPress and open-source community not to mention unhelpful tech industry analysts, "WordPress" is something you can buy, and it's often confused with any number of related brands: Automattic, WordPress VIP, and managed WordPress hosts that support enterprise clients. After getting an outline of the problem as it stands today, I asked Tom what might help differentiate "Enterprise WordPress" as a collective or entire ecosystem of agencies operating within it. Can open-source values of sharing and cooperation shape a unique global identity for enterprise WordPress agencies? Is it time for an inter-agency association or "guild" to take on these challenges? (Human Made has an internal "guild" structure of cross-functional teams — what could it look like to extend them across the whole agency space?)And how might that look within the WordPress ecosystem and others adjacent to it? Are more inter-agency gatherings needed along with greater participation in existing tech and design conferences? Will agencies like Human Made resume hosting conferences like their Day and Week of REST events in the past? Can the larger WordCamps cater to an enterprise track? Does Enterprise WordPress need its own conferences? I like Jeremy Keith and ClearLeft as a model for agency thought leadership. Magne has pointed to the Society of Digital Agencies (SoDA) as a model for organized peer collaboration and North Patrol as a model for a research and advisory firm that connects agencies with clients and reports on regional enterprise webtech markets. This is an open, ongoing conversation. Over the years he's worked for Automattic at WordPress.com and WordPress VIP, and is now a principal developer at Human Made, an enterprise WordPress agency. We talk about how Fränk decided early on that he was going to start developing with blocks and, more recently, with the full site editing capabilities now built into WordPress Core. Fränk explains how he sees the adoption of Gutenberg as inevitable. WordPress is moving away from the classic approach of content creation to a more visual, block-based experience. He thinks that it's important to become an expert at building websites and custom solutions for clients, and for taking the time to learn the new tools that this future will require.

Human-made chemicals with the unexpected ability to interfere with our body's endocrine system have become prominent contaminants in daily life. Because the hormones produced by our endocrine system create complex signaling networks that control our growth, maturation, fertility, immunity, behavior, and sleep, these endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, can exert powerful biological effects. Declines in human fertility evidenced by falling sperm counts and increases in the incidence of infertility raise concern that daily exposure to EDC contaminants already is impacting human fertility. By design, all species are responsive to their environment. In humans, this responsiveness means that changes in our environment can affect the production of eggs and sperm, the growth and development of the fetus, and adult susceptibility to disease. Thus, in a 21st century world characterized by environmental crises, EDCs represent a planetary health problem with the potential to affect future generations. The uncle of an FBI agent spends his life as sheriff in different cities, living too close to the violent acts of men; a cocktail waitress moves through several desert towns trying to escape the unexplainable loss of an adopted daughter; a drug dealer with a penchant for karaoke meets a talkative lawyer and a silent clown in a Palm Springs bar. Raymond Carver meets Elmore Leonard in this extraordinary collection of contemporary crime writing set in the critically acclaimed Gangsterland universe, a series called "gloriously original" by The New York Times Book Review.
