Friends of the Rosary,Today is the Optional Memorial of St. Rita of Cascia (1386-1457), an Italian saint known for her patience, cheerfulness, and union by prayer with God.After eighteen years of married life, St. Rita lost, by death, her husband and her two sons.Rita's parents gave her in marriage, at the age of eighteen, to an impulsive, irascible, and abusive man. Two sons were born to them, each inheriting their father's quarrelsome temperament.She finally won her husband's heart through her sanctity and prayers, and he converted. However, soon he was murdered by an old enemy. Her sons said they would kill the assassin in revenge. Rita prayed without ceasing, and the children converted, abandoning their impulse. Immediately after, they both died of an illness.Afterward, Rita was called to the religious state. She professed the Rule of St. Augustine at Cascia, her native town, in central Italy.She died May 22, 1456, and both in life and after death has worked many miracles. O saint of the impossible whose union with Christ in His Passion and His glory serves to grant favors to those in great need, you whose great thirst to be one with our Bridegroom brought the help of the saints yourself – pray we poor souls shall fulfill our vocation, that through the din of this world we shall hear and answer the call of the Lord and give ourselves in His service in the manner He desires. Pray our hearts be so set on union with Him that no obstacle shall stand in our way, that all help we need to find our path to Him will be provided through your prayers. How shall we come to dwell in Heaven? Invoke God's blessing upon us.

Friends of the Rosary, Today in the United States is the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea. This year the intention includes those impacted by Baltimore Key Bridge tragedy. Also, today is the Optional Memorial of the Augustinian nun of St. Rita Cascia (1386-1457), Patron saint of the impossible, difficult, and hopeless. After eighteen years of married life, St. Rita lost her husband and her two sons. Called afterwards to the religious state, she professed the Rule of St. Augustine at Cascia her native town, in central Italy. In a life-long and terrible malady her patience, cheerfulness, and union by prayer with almighty God, never failed her. Jesus imprinted on her brow the mark of a thorn from His crown, which is understood to indicate a partial stigmata. Known for the efficacy of her prayers, various miracles are attributed to her intercession. At her canonization ceremony, she was bestowed the title of "Patroness of Impossible Causes." In many Catholic countries, Rita came to be known as the patroness of abused wives and heartbroken women. She was canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. Come, Holy Spirit, come! In 2005, Hurricane Katrina carved a devastating path of destruction through New Orleans, Louisiana, resulting in 1,833 reported fatalities. Considered the most significant loss was the deaths of 35 older and/or medically compromised adult residents at St. Rita's nursing home.
