B.B. King. Muddy Waters. Bo Diddley. Jimmy Rodgers. All of these musicians have Mississippi running through their veins. Music is what makes Mississippi what it is. How do we make sure we remember these musicians? How do we let their melodies echo throughout history? Malcolm White knew the answer. He found a way to make sure Mississippi remembers its artists through his sensational restaurant, Hal & Mal's, and through his work with the Mississippi Arts Commission. Through the words of Nora Courtney and the production of David Johnson, find out how Malcolm White shows the world what hidden talents arise from the same soil where the Blues were born. Original music written and recorded by Steven Kennedy.
In this week's episode we chat to Steven Kennedy who is the founder of Birthing Dad's and the PREPARE Foundation. In his past life, Steven was a sparky, an engineer and an actor. In 2017 Steven welcomed his little boy into the world. Despite having invested heavily in birth preparation, Steven recalls this experience as being traumatic for both parents. Born by emergency c-section with an APGAR score of 1, their little boy required extensive resuscitation and spent the first 12 hours of his life in special care. This experience drove Steven to begin researching the topic of 'men at birth' and the wider implications of the cesarean and birth trauma rates that define modern childbirth.Steven concluded that most expectant fathers are not adequately prepared for the experience of witnessing childbirth – even though 95% of dads are now placed in a critical birth support role. He also realised that very little was being done to provide dads with the knowledge and confidence required to support birth effectively. This led Steven to create Birthing Dad's. Birthing Dads is an evidence-based antenatal education program aimed at providing men with a simple how to guide to enjoy pregnancy, support birth like a superhero and breeze into fatherhood with a smooth landing. Throughout this episode Steven speaks vulnerably about his transition to fatherhood, the traumatic birth of his child, how men can support their partners throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond and importantly, how we can better support men through this life changing transition. In 2017 when Birthing Dads Founder Steven Kennedy had a rough trot after the birth of his son, he researched evidence around the topic of men at birth to better understand his own experience. He discovered the health system supporting birth is in crisis and many of the statistics that define modern birth (cesarean, birth trauma, inductions) are heading in the wrong direction. He discovered that many men are unprepared for the experience of birth and this could actually be contributing to the poor outcomes. Steven decided to create Birthing Dads to see if the statistics could be turned around by engaging men more effectively in the process.Join us on this episode as we pick (prick?) Stephen's brain and share his knowledge and research how Dads can have more of a role in the birth of their child.https://birthingdads.orghttps://www.facebook.com/onedadpodcastInstagram @onedadpodcast
Ross Garnaut is in conversation on his new book, Reset: Restoring Australia after the Pandemic Recession, in which Garnaut shows how the COVID-19 crisis offers Australia the opportunity to reset its economy and build a successful future - and why the old approaches will not work. Garnaut develops the idea of a renewable superpower, calls for a basic income and explores what the 'decoupling' of China and America will mean for Australia. In the wake of COVID-19, the world has entered its deepest recession since the 1930s. Shocks of this magnitude throw history from its established course - either for good or evil. In 1942 - in the depths of war - the Australian government established a Department of Post-War Reconstruction to plan a future that not only restored existing strengths but also rebuilt the country for a new and better future. As we strive to overcome the coronavirus challenge, we need new, practical ideas to restore Australia. This book has them. Ross Garnaut AC is Professorial Research Fellow in Economics at the University of Melbourne. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences and a Distinguished Fellow of the Economic Society of Australia. He was principal economic adviser to Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Australian Ambassador to China (1985-88). In 2008, he produced the Garnaut Climate Change Review for the Australian government and a follow-up review in 2011. He is the author of many books, including the bestselling Dog Days and Superpower. Dr Steven Kennedy, Secretary to the Australian Treasury since 2 September 2019, has held numerous senior positions in the public service in a 30 year career. He was the Head of Secretariat of the Garnaut Climate Change Review - Update 2011 and was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2016 for outstanding public service in the area of climate change policy. Dr Kennedy holds a PhD and a Masters in Economics from the Australian National University, and a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours) from the University of Sydney. Welcome and introduction delivered by Professor Brian P. Schmidt, ANU Vice-Chancellor. Vote of thanks given by Professor Helen Sullivan, Director of the Crawford School of Public Policy ANU.

Oni Blecher interviews Steven Kennedy about his work with Birthing Dads and inquires into Steven's birth story. Steven speaks to preparing fathers for birth and the postnatal period. He speaks about how fathers and male birth support are the 'sleeping giants' of the birth world and if fathers are more prepared, they could assist and take extra weight and responsibility off midwives. When Steven suffered depression and trauma after the birth of his son in 2017 he turned to academic literature to research the experiences of expectant fathers at birth. He discovered a grim picture of modern society’s relationship with childbirth. A common theme was the suggestion that care providers prepare expectant fathers to better support themselves and their families in the perinatal period. Steven knew he had to act when further exploration revealed the research was being ignored. See more at birthingdads.org
