Susan knew almost nothing about foster care. And when the blinders came off at 27 years old, her whole life completely changed. In today's episode of Fostering Change, Rob Scheer speaks with a true “angel”: Susan Ramirez, the founder of National Angels, a non-profit organization whose mission is “to walk alongside children, youth, and families in the foster care community by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship.”Now in 21 cities in 16 states, National Angels goal is to keep youth in foster care in one home before they are returned to their biological family or become a permanent part of that home by adoption. As Susan notes in the interview: “Every child should have at least one healthy adult who knows the color of their eyes and the passions of their heart.” Because close to 50% of foster parents close their home in one year, on average children in foster care move 7 times every 2 years. Think about that. How does that set these youth up for success?Susan and Rob discuss how foster care affects ALL of us as a society, and it is up to us ALL to do what we can to equip all youth to succeed. Otherwise, it can lead down the wrong path - as many of you know, 80% of all death row inmates were once in foster care. Close to 25% of those who have been part of “human trafficking” have been in foster care. Without support, those numbers will only grow.National Angels will host a “Give-a-Thon” from November 21-28. All of us at Comfort Cases encourage you to consider making a donation to increase their national awareness and support. In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm talking to one of the most inspiring people I've ever met. She is absolutely a living example of someone who is loving, serving, and growing through her work in the world. Susan Ramirez is the founder and CEO of National Angels, an organization that helps foster care community by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship. Susan spent the first several years of her career working in corporate America, but then, after attending a conference about foster and adoption, she felt a powerful calling to completely change her life's path. Despite being scared to shift her life so drastically, she stepped forward to honor that calling and has since gone on to grow National Angels to a nationwide organization that helps thousands of foster children and their families. This episode is so inspiring, and I know it's going to resonate with that big piece of YOU that feels called to serve through your work and your business. Listen in to hear... ---> The full powerful story of how Susan was called to help kids in foster care ---> The inner struggle that Susan faced to honor that calling — and how she overcame it ---> How her vision expanded the more she honored her calling ---> Inspiring stories about how the work National Angels is doing is working ---> How you can help support families who foster with time, financial resources, or mentoring Susan believes that every single child should have one healthy adult who knows the color of their eyes and the passions of their heart… ...and her mission is to reach and help every single child so that they know and feel that they're loved. Susan Ramirez founded Austin Angels with the vision of improving the lives of every child in the foster care system. Susan felt a higher calling to lead her community in service and thus made a change in career. This week on Real Talk, we get real with Susan Ramirez, is the founder and CEO of National Angels, a nonprofit focused on showing foster children and families love and community, and providing them the support they need. She found her calling for this by piloting a Love Box Program (which they still do) and it grew into Angel Chapters all over the nation, intending to put a chapter in every metropolitan city. In this week’s episode, we talk about all things foster care and love. Honestly, this was a powerful episode for me coming from foster care. Her mission is one that changes kids' lives, and I can only imagine what it would have done for me as a child (that’s not me feeling sorry for myself, it’s me acknowledging how HUGE this program is). Listening to her story is a motivational and inspirational experience (and fair warning it may bring a tear to your eye.) Susan Ramirez is the founder and CEO of Austin Angels, which she started in 2010 with the hope of improving the lives of every child in the foster care system. As a former foster parent herself, Susan knows the hardship of caring for children in the foster care system and understands the need for community support.
DONATE TO HOUSTON ANGELS IN HONOR OF NATIONAL FOSTER CARE MONTH 10 years ago, Susan was selling homes and working as a corporate trainer. Around this time, she sold a home to a woman who was a CPS worker, who invited her to a foster and adoption conference. Susan attended the conference and after hearing a judge tell a particularly impactful story of two boys who grew up in foster care, she leaves that conference feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders... she felt like God was telling her that creating change for foster care was now her burden to bear. So the next few years, she and her volunteer group would help to throw fun service events and provide extracurricular activities for children in foster care. But as great as they were, she realized they weren't life-changing. They needed to get to the root of the problem if they were going to truly prevent these kids from just ending up as another statistic. Susan spent the next 5-6 years building Austin Angels and piloting the Love Box Program, in which volunteers put together a "Love Box" of items tailored to a foster family's specific needs. But at the end of the day, it wasn't about the stuff - it was about the real, lasting bonds that were forming. It was about the lives being changed as a result of community, consistency, and intentionality. A few years later, Austin Angels' programs were successfully launched in Amarillo, TX. This eventually led to the creation of a national organization with chapters opening up in major cities like DFW, Cleveland, Seattle, and many more all across the country - including yours truly here in Houston. Listen to the full episode to hear Susan tell the judge's story that changed everything, more about her journey scaling the organization, and why she is so passionate about this mission. Today I talk with Susan Rameriz, founder of Austin Angels. Austin Angels is a non-profit that helps improves the lives of foster care children. We talk about how to come alongside all children so they feel worthy and loved. Susan left a high paying corporate job to do something that gave her purpose and to do work on behalf of others. We talk about what that looks like, and how to lean into a calling for our lives even when we don’t have all the answers. She was invited to a foster care conference and it changed her entire life. Listen to this powerful story. Susan also gives us some simple steps to love vulnerable children well and we talk about the ins and outs of the non-profit world. It's no surprise that the foster care system could improve. The majority of why foster kids are moved from home to home is that the foster family is not equipped and not supported. After getting involved with volunteer work, Susan Ramirez decided to make her life's mission to make a change in what she was seeing. Her and a group of friends launched National Angel's, a non-profit whose mission is to walk along side children in the foster care system, as well as their caretakers, by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorships. Not everyone is called to foster or adopt, but everyone can help in some way.

Susan Ramirez and Jon Huckins are giving their all in some of *the* hardest work: lending voices and love to two communities who are suffering deeply. In our last episode of For the Love of Giving, we’re going to talk with Susan and Jon about the problems their communities face, and how we can give our time and privilege to help solve these complex problems. First up, Susan Ramirez is the CEO of National Angels, an org that walks alongside children and their caretakers in the foster care system. Today, we learn how one National Angels program is changing lives by providing love and belonging to kids who need it most. In the second half of the show, we talk with Jon Huckins. Jon is the co-founding director of the Global Immersion Project, a peacemaking training organization that equips people of faith to engage our divided world in restorative ways. Jen and Jon discuss how we can be good brothers and sisters to our neighbors who are suffering on the border, and how those with privilege can use it to fight on behalf of their marginalized neighbors.
AUSTIN ANGELS Founder and CEO Susan Ramirez is so passionate about the children in the foster care system. She started out just volunteering and loving on kids in the system and that transitioned to an organization that has now been nationally recognized. Austin Angels partners with families that are fostering, they are intentionally engaging in relationships with kiddos and family to show love and support. This is key because fostering a child can be so isolating and being a foster child is SO difficult. So imagine these kids who have been removed from their lives now in a new place but being loved on, supported, encouraged and given monthly gifts. As an adoptive mom and a friend to many foster mommas I ADORE this program! Susan and I met in the spring at the RISE conference put on my Rachel Hollis. When Susan and I first started talking I felt like we just clicked and I was BEYOND THRILLED when she agreed to be on the podcast. I love that Susan followed her calling, I love that she is setting HUGE goals..Like a Austin Angels chapter in ever major City. I love big dreams and goals like that, and I do not believe it is too far fetched! When I asked Susan her best tips for being a friend she gave some great advice: Praying for friends, texting, carving out intentional time with friends so we can be support and love on our friends If you feel led to be make a Angel Ambassadors monthly giving commitment follow through! Don't let today pass you by!! OR if you feel led to start a chapter GOOO!! I am cheering you on friend!! I just loved todays conversation. Today, my conversation is with the incredible woman behind Austin Angels, Susan Ramirez. I can't believe she's on the show! Susan saw a need in the foster care community for additional support for the families who take in foster children. So, she took her drive and experience from her corporate job and put all her energy into founding this incredible nonprofit. Now she helps hundreds of kids to feel love and build their skills and confidence, so that they can lessen the stats of kids exiting the program at 18. We also talk about her own motherhood journey and it's just incredible. You may not feel called to foster a child, but there is so much we can do to support families that do!
