In today's episode of Fostering Change, Rob Scheer speaks with a true “angel”: Susan Ramirez, the founder of National Angels, a non-profit organization whose mission is “to walk alongside children, youth, and families in the foster care community by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship.”Now in 21 cities in 16 states, National Angels goal is to keep youth in foster care in one home before they are returned to their biological family or become a permanent part of that home by adoption. As Susan notes in the interview: “Every child should have at least one healthy adult who knows the color of their eyes and the passions of their heart.” Because close to 50% of foster parents close their home in one year, on average children in foster care move 7 times every 2 years. Think about that. How does that set these youth up for success?Susan and Rob discuss how foster care affects ALL of us as a society, and it is up to us ALL to do what we can to equip all youth to succeed. Otherwise, it can lead down the wrong path - as many of you know, 80% of all death row inmates were once in foster care. Close to 25% of those who have been part of “human trafficking” have been in foster care. Without support, those numbers will only grow.National Angels will host a “Give-a-Thon” from November 21-28. All of us at Comfort Cases encourage you to consider making a donation to increase their national awareness and support. This is a super special week on Rise Together because our interviewee is...Dave Hollis! Dave sits down with his good friend Jon Acuff and reflects on the past 5 years, his experience with treatment and sobriety, and what the future holds as he continues on his journey of figuring out this thing we call life. -- National Angels is working to ensure that every single child/youth who experiences foster care has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential and every family who fosters is radically supported in their journey. If you've been looking for a community online that invites you to not only come as you are but celebrates you for being exactly who you are and where you're at in your journey, this is absolutely for you. This community has become my safe, reliable soft landing on the days I struggle as well as accountability cheerleaders when I get on a roll. As much as people come to get into better shape, they stay because of feeling part of something unlike anything they've ever experienced. Everyone has access to daily workout programs with individual tracks that you can jump in and out of: in the gym or at home, programs for men and women, at every fitness level with modifications to meet you where you are. Beyond the physical challenges, the weekly lives also feature experts in nutrition, dance, breathwork, cooking, yoga, and more, all of whom interact and answer questions in the community regularly. This celebration of what our bodies can do is equally supported by creating space for the mental and emotional components of transformation, all in a private Facebook community that loves and supports you as you are, right where you are. For me, in this window of life, this community has become the only place I interact online because of the way it pours positively into me and every other person there, every single time I'm there. In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm talking to one of the most inspiring people I've ever met. She is absolutely a living example of someone who is loving, serving, and growing through her work in the world. Susan Ramirez is the founder and CEO of National Angels, an organization that helps foster care community by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship. Susan spent the first several years of her career working in corporate America, but then, after attending a conference about foster and adoption, she felt a powerful calling to completely change her life's path. Despite being scared to shift her life so drastically, she stepped forward to honor that calling and has since gone on to grow National Angels to a nationwide organization that helps thousands of foster children and their families. This episode is so inspiring, and I know it's going to resonate with that big piece of YOU that feels called to serve through your work and your business. Listen in to hear... ---> The full powerful story of how Susan was called to help kids in foster care  ---> The inner struggle that Susan faced to honor that calling — and how she overcame it ---> How her vision expanded the more she honored her calling ---> Inspiring stories about how the work National Angels is doing is working ---> How you can help support families who foster with time, financial resources, or mentoring Susan believes that every single child should have one healthy adult who knows the color of their eyes and the passions of their heart… ...and her mission is to reach and help every single child so that they know and feel that they're loved. If you feel called to support National Angels and help Susan continue to do her meaningful work in the world, please join me by going here: www.yourvirtualupline.com/donate.  My wife, Shannon, and I will be matching every single donation.

Jasmine Star was on the podcast back on episode 009: Chasing Your Why: Career Pivots for the Creative Entrepreneur. This time, we’re talking about Jasmine’s decade-long journey to adopting her daughter.   Adoption: Shifting perspectives Jasmine and her husband JD were in very different spots when they began their adoption journey.  Jasmine reflects on the moment she and her husband became involved with the foster system. You can volunteer with communities like National Angels and CASA to show children in the foster system that they are loved. They ultimately adopted through a private adoption facilitated by lawyers.   “There are so many children who just need love and there’s people who are kind good souls who are saying ‘Well, you’re here with us. We’re going to love you.’”     The fears after adoption   “Am I brave enough to be vulnerable to love somebody who may look at me in the face and say ‘you are not my mom’ or ‘I don’t love you.’”   It’s a microcosm of loving in general: to open yourself up to love and unbelievable joy, you have to be open to the fear and potential heartache. This week, Danielle is joined by the lovely Amanda Garren. Amanda is a social worker and the president of Nashville Angels, a non-profit supporting children and caretakers in the foster care system. She shares how she discovered her passion for social work, and how she takes care of her own mental health in such a demanding field. She discusses what schooling and classes are like for social work, and the value of integrated healthcare. D and Amanda also discuss youth aging out of the foster care system, the importance of care for these young adults, and the risks they face in making this transition alone. Amanda addresses the common myth that foster parents are just in it for the money, and emphasizes the importance of encouraging great foster parents, of which there are many. They discuss how you rarely hear about the small-town people doing great work, and so, we bring you this inspiring episode! Conversation Points You DON'T Want to Miss: - Self Identity & Self Reflection during pain and valleys - God's role in our becoming process - CORE Values and how to activate in new seasons around these - Benefits of Therapy  - Alignment of Physical, Spiritual, Emotional and Relationship  - Parenting 4 Kiddos - Resources for them to understand TRUTH before the world teaches them lies.  - Development of Gifting and Purpose for creating impact, sharing light, and unlocking potential in others. - Beauty that comes in change  - Sailing into new Seasons - reference to Ben Rector's Sailboat song   INTRO: OK, so I could jump into this conversation in so many different incredible takeaways, but I think one of the parts that really touched me was realizing that we all get out of bed and put our pants on the exact same way. Well, maybe not when I was nine months pregnant and needed help in that process. But beyond that, I was so honored to have just a real vulnerable conversation about personal things - mind, body, emotions, spirit, soul, health, wealth, business, fitness, faith, Jesus, community. I mean, the list goes on, you guys. Dave Hollis is an A-list. He's is... I'm trying to think of an analogy that goes with baseball because he's a baseball fan and he coaches, and he loves his kiddos. Let's just say he is someone you would want to invite to your own Tea Party, your own teatime. He's got his Tea Time with Noah. You're going to learn more about that when you tune in as well. But I am just honored, honestly, to have the conversation, to enjoy it alongside each of you and the community members who showed up live. And if you're tuning in now for the podcast version, the Audible, just I hope you sense the energy. And more than anything, I hope you leave hearing the power that God has within our lives, even in the valleys, even on the mountaintops or in this conversation, even in the storm, in the sailboat, stepping out of the sailboat. Wherever we find you, I think Dave would partner with me in this prayer to know that you are going the right direction when you're waving the white flag, submitting your life before our Father who can cultivate and make all things new. Dave, I thank you so much for coming on, and I can't wait for the listeners to gain wisdom and light from your time with us. All right, let's go. Being a "Proud American" means doing whatever we can to ensure that the next generation grows up knowing they are loved and cared for, and unfortunately this is not always the case for many children. Fairness and equality aren’t the same thing, but every child in this country deserves a fair chance at a happy and full life. In this episode, Marine Corps Veteran and Proud American Johnny Joey Jones introduces us to Susan Ramirez, who founded National Angels, a program that provides Love Boxes and mentorship to children and caretakers in the foster care system. These children are born into a disadvantage to no fault of their own, but they deserve all the same love and investment as any other child, and National Angels is doing just that.

DONATE TO HOUSTON ANGELS IN HONOR OF NATIONAL FOSTER CARE MONTH 10 years ago, Susan was selling homes and working as a corporate trainer. Around this time, she sold a home to a woman who was a CPS worker, who invited her to a foster and adoption conference. Susan attended the conference and after hearing a judge tell a particularly impactful story of two boys who grew up in foster care, she leaves that conference feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders... she felt like God was telling her that creating change for foster care was now her burden to bear. So the next few years, she and her volunteer group would help to throw fun service events and provide extracurricular activities for children in foster care. But as great as they were, she realized they weren't life-changing. They needed to get to the root of the problem if they were going to truly prevent these kids from just ending up as another statistic. Susan spent the next 5-6 years building Austin Angels and piloting the Love Box Program, in which volunteers put together a "Love Box" of items tailored to a foster family's specific needs. But at the end of the day, it wasn't about the stuff - it was about the real, lasting bonds that were forming. It was about the lives being changed as a result of community, consistency, and intentionality. A few years later, Austin Angels' programs were successfully launched in Amarillo, TX. This eventually led to the creation of a national organization with chapters opening up in major cities like DFW, Cleveland, Seattle, and many more all across the country - including yours truly here in Houston. Listen to the full episode to hear Susan tell the judge's story that changed everything, more about her journey scaling the organization, and why she is so passionate about this mission. Dave helps us see our own journeys more clearly as he unpacks the lies he once believed—such as “I Have to Have It All Together,” “Failure Means You’re Weak,” and “If They Doesn’t Need Me, Will They Still Want Me?”—and reveals the tools that helped him change his life. Offering encouragement, challenge, and a hundred moments to laugh at himself, Dave points the way for those of us who are, like he was, skeptical of self-help but wanting something more than status quo, and helps us drop bogus ideas about who we are supposed to be and finally start living as who we really are.

Susan Ramirez and Jon Huckins are giving their all in some of *the* hardest work: lending voices and love to two communities who are suffering deeply. In our last episode of For the Love of Giving, we’re going to talk with Susan and Jon about the problems their communities face, and how we can give our time and privilege to help solve these complex problems. First up, Susan Ramirez is the CEO of National Angels, an org that walks alongside children and their caretakers in the foster care system. Today, we learn how one National Angels program is changing lives by providing love and belonging to kids who need it most. In the second half of the show, we talk with Jon Huckins. Jon is the co-founding director of the Global Immersion Project, a peacemaking training organization that equips people of faith to engage our divided world in restorative ways. Jen and Jon discuss how we can be good brothers and sisters to our neighbors who are suffering on the border, and how those with privilege can use it to fight on behalf of their marginalized neighbors.
