In this week's double portion, Vayakhel-Pekude, Rabbi Joseph Dweck explores the profound concept of Nedib Leb—the "willing heart". As the Israelites begin the physical construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), we learn that the most essential building material isn't gold or silver, but the voluntary spirit of the people.Rabbi Dweck delves into the spiritual anatomy of the heart, contrasting the open, faithful heart of Sinai with the "sealed" heart that emerged during the crisis of the Golden Calf. By examining the teachings of the Rishonim and a powerful Midrash about the destruction of the Temple, he reveals how the "core self" of the Jewish person remains fundamentally connected to a desire for relationship with God, even in times of fear and uncertainty.Rabbi Dweck has held rabbinic leadership roles in the US and the UK. Moses presents the mitzvah of Shabbat alongside the Mishkan project, closing the book of Shemot with the account of how the Mishkan was built, including the aron fashioned by its chief artisan. The copper wash basin made from women's mirrors used in Egypt to encourage their husbands to conceive despite slavery, a contribution Moshe initially rejects but God praises as most desired. It also explains that the detailed accounting of donations functions as public transparency, and ends with God's presence filling and leading Israel through the desert via the pillar of cloud and fire.Rabbi Dweck has held rabbinic leadership roles in the US and the UK. What happens when the people of Israel miscalculate Moses' return from Mount Sinai — and panic sets in? In this week's Torah portion, Ki Tisa, we explore one of the most dramatic and painful episodes in the entire Torah: the fashioning of the Golden Calf.As Moses spends 40 days and 40 nights atop Har Sinai, communing with God and receiving the Torah, the people grow restless. They lose track of time, grow anxious, and begin to fear the worst — "What has happened to Moses?" In their uncertainty, they turn to Aaron with a desperate request: give us something tangible, a stand-in for the Divine presence that has guided us.What follows is a lesson about faith, fear, and what we reach for when our spiritual anchor seems to disappear.Rabbi Dweck has held rabbinic leadership roles in the US and the UK. Today I talked to Elliott Rabin about his book The Biblical Hero: Portraits in Nobility and Fallibility (Jewish Publication Society, 2020). Approaching the Bible in an original way—comparing biblical heroes to heroes in world literature—Rabin addresses a core biblical question: What is the Bible telling us about what it means to be a hero? Focusing on the lives of six major biblical characters—Moses, Samson, David, Esther, Abraham, and Jacob—Rabin examines their resemblance to hero types found in (and perhaps drawn from) other literatures and analyzes why the Bible depicts its heroes less gloriously than do the texts of other cultures. Matthew Miller is a graduate of Yeshivat Yesodei HaTorah. He studied Jewish Studies and Linguistics at McGill for his BA and completed an MA in Hebrew Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. Drawing on Isaiah Berlin's inferential essay, “The Hedgehog and the Fox,” Hillel Goldberg opens this volume: “By commitment I am a hedgehog – I believe in a single central principle, the Torah. By temperament I am a fox, drawn to the wide Jewish intellectual horizon, buoyed by its diversity and ever-expanding reach.”  The kaleidoscopic breadth of Jewish thought marks this volume on prayer, biblical interpretation, musar, theology, and biography – tributaries highlighting the mainstream, halakhah. Goldberg treats halakhah not as a concept but via its “small letters,” exemplified in the laws of mikveh and expressed in “Philosophy of Halakhah: The Prism of Mikveh” and “The Vilna Gaon's Codes.” In Across the Expanse of Jewish Thought: From the Holocaust to Halakhah and Beyond (Ktav, 2022), Goldberg draws on his prior work on cross-cultural Jewish thinkers from Eastern Europe to gather multiple voices of Jewish thought under the canopy of the whole. Matthew Miller is a graduate of Yeshivat Yesodei HaTorah. He studied Jewish Studies and Linguistics at McGill for his BA and completed an MA in Hebrew Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. 101 Treasures from the National Library of Israel (Scala Arts, 2022) provides a thematic journey through the rich and diverse collections of the National Library of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide. Selected by the Library's curators and collections experts, this fine-art volume presents 101 of the most precious items in the Library's collections, from 5th century Babylonia to modern-day Tel Aviv, and shares illuminating stories and anecdotes about these significant works and the intriguing people behind them.  Highlights include Maimonides' autograph copy of his Commentary on the Mishna; the Damascus Crowns including a vitally important 10th century Hebrew Bible codex; theological ruminations of Isaac Newton; love poetry by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent; manuscripts from leading Jewish and Israeli writers, such as Martin Buber, Stefan Zweig, Franz Kafka, Naomi Shemer, and Shai Agnon; and rare materials documenting Israeli history. High-quality photographs illustrate the stories, and the introduction sets these collections within their cultural and historical context. Matthew Miller is a graduate of Yeshivat Yesodei HaTorah. The Jewish nation begins with a collection of twelve brothers and half-brothers, linked through their father, Jacob. From these close familiar beginnings, each develops into a distinct tribe, with unique characteristics and destinies that have indelible imprints on the rest of Tanakh.  Tribal Blueprints: Twelve Brothers and the Destiny of Israel (Maggid, 2020) examines each of Jacob's sons, revealing their individual stories in Genesis and the impact of their shifting places within the family. How do these individuals evolve? What is the role of each of the four mothers? How does each brother's placement in the birth order of the family influence his behavior? How are the brothers' personalities reflected in future generations?  In this volume, Dr. Nechama Price takes the reader on a journey through the biblical narrative, looking anew at the ancient stories of Genesis to uncover a new appreciation for the special role of each of the twelve tribes, who together form the nation of Israel.
