This week's annual cycle Torah reading is parsha "Pinchas," Numbers 30:2 through chapter 32) and - in part at least - it wraps up one of the mysteries in the Torah, how can a people so blessed of YHVH fall so quickly into idolatry, and beset by 'plague?' But there is far more, and the issue of "vows" literally envelops the narrative. As it still does today. The Erev Shabbat reading: https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/SSM-7-25-25-Matot-teaching-podcast-xxx.mp3 The Sabbath Day midrash is at attempt to connect a collection of dots that range from broken vows and lying prophets to bioweaponry and ELE asteroid impacts. The prophet Bilaam really wanted to curse the mixed multitude of Israel, but was explicitly forbidden to do so, on pain of death - as he learned "the hard way." Only "the word that Elohim puts in my mouth, that I shall speak." And yet, like so many ancient popes and modern traitors in politics, he thought he was smarter than God Himself, and could find a "workaround." It cost him. Today we don't have a Moses to "hang 'em high," or a Pinchas to literally run them through, 'en flagrante delecto,' with a spear. Which only makes the potential consequences all the more deadly. And imminent. RAB MORDEJAY MALEJ- PERASHA CON ZOHAR-MATOT MAASE 5784.m4a by TALMUD TORA MONTE SINAI
In parashat Matot , we read about the war that the Jewish People waged against Midyan. A thousand people were chosen from each tribe to be the soldiers to fight the battle. Fighting in war was an important part of the Jewish People's being the Am Hashem . Later on in the parasha when Moshe thought that some of the tribes were trying to get out of fighting, he became very upset. As we know, Jewish wars are not won with strong soldiers, they are won by Hashem, as it says, "ה' איש מלחמה," and therefore, the people chosen to fight were the most righteous individuals who would have extra Siyata d'Shamaya . As well, Chazal tell us, when the Jews fought against Midyan, for each soldier that went out to battle, there needed to be a corresponding individual who would stay back to learn and pray on his behalf. It was a partnership. Some would go out to the battlefield, and some would stay back to fight on the spiritual front. Torah and tefila protect us. They are the real ammunition we need to do battle. We are far from being the strongest nation in the world, but luckily for us, we don't need physical might, because we have Hashem to fight our wars. In 1967, the millions of Jews living in Israel were in grave danger. The Egyptian leader Abdel Nasser began moving tens of thousands of soldiers and hundreds of tanks to the Sinai Peninsula towards Israel's southern border. Egypt also blockaded the Straits of Tiran, an international waterway, which was essentially a declaration of war. The people of Israel turned to the nations of the world, primarily the US, for assistance against this Egyptian aggression, but somehow all the Western countries chose to remain neutral. The Jewish People of Israel were left all alone to face the might of the Arab nations who were looking to obliterate them off the face of the earth. Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon all formed a military alliance and began moving forces into Jordan, towards Israel's border. When the other Arab countries realized that the world had abandoned Israel, they began openly calling for the destruction of Israel and the murder of millions of Jews. Military experts projected a loss of possibly 100,000 Jewish lives. They were digging mass graves in case the cemeteries ran out of space. On June 15, at 7:15 in the morning, the Israelis attempted a very daring mission. The risk was extraordinary. They dispatched almost their entire air force, flying at an unprecedented low altitude, less than 20 meters from the ground. Egypt had the most advanced ground to air missiles in the Middle East, and the Israeli planes were old and outdated. But like all other battles, we had Hashem on our side, as was so clear from the events which transpired after that. Precisely during that one hour that the air force went out, the most advanced Russian made jets that patrolled along the border between Egypt and Israel were grounded. Right at that time, the commanders of Egypt, Jordan and Iraq were flying together to observe the Egyptian forces invading Sinai, so they ordered all anti-aircraft units not to fire unless they were given a direct order, as long as they were still in flight. That is precisely when the Israeli Air Force struck. And by 7:45, all their planes were bombing the Egyptian airfields without even being detected. They knocked out half their fleet, and then they went to Cairo to finish off the job. They were outnumbered in soldiers, in planes and in tanks, but it didn't matter, because the battle was not fought with might, it was won by Hashem. Our main concern is our spirituality. Are we as pure as we are supposed to be? We are to provide the spiritual energy and then we'll see the fulfillment of the pasuk "ה' ילחם לכם ואתם תחרישון". Shabbat Shalom.

Perashat Mas'ei opens with a fairly dry listing of places in which the Children of Israel journeyed on their way out of Egypt into the Promised Land for 40 years. God expressly commands Moshe to write all the places down. In this episode we explore why and what implications it has on our own lives.
e read in Parashat Matot of the war that G-d commanded Beneh Yisrael to wage against the nation of Midyan to avenge the tragedy of Ba'al Pe'or. Midyan, together Moav, conspired to lure Beneh Yisrael to sins of immorality and idol-worship. The scheme, unfortunately, succeeded, and G-d punished Beneh Yisrael by sending a plague that killed 24,000 members of the nation. Hashem instructed Beneh Yisrael to wage war against Midyan in order to take revenge. The Torah relates that this battle was led by Pinhas, the son of the Kohen Gadol, Elazar (31:6). Rashi gives two reasons for why specifically Pinhas was chosen to lead the war. First, he was the one who saved Beneh Yisrael from annihilation during the calamity of Ba'al Pe'or, by killing a man and woman who committed a public sinful act. Once Pinhas avenged G-d's honor, G-d ended the plague. Rashi writes that since Pinhas began the Misva by killing these two violators, he was chosen to complete the Misva by leading the war against Midyan. But then Rashi adds a second explanation. He writes that Pinhas led the war against Midyan to avenge that nation's role in the sale of his ancestor, Yosef, as a slave. Pinhas' mother was a descendant of Yosef, and merchants from Midyan were the ones who, after purchasing Yosef from his brothers, brought him to Egypt and sold him to Potifar, an Egyptian nobleman. It was thus appropriate for Yosef's descendant, Pinhas, to lead Beneh Yisrael's war against the people of Midyan. Rashi's comments seem puzzling. Why should Midyan be blamed for Mechirat Yosef (the sale of Yosef as a slave)? It was Yosef's brothers who turned on him; the Midyanim simply accepted the offer and paid for Yosef, after which they sold him for a profit. Why did their role in Mechirat Yosef need to be avenged? Yosef excelled particularly in the area of Kedusha, maintaining his sanctity and purity even in the face of overwhelming temptation. As a teenager, he was lured to sin by Potifar's wife, and he resisted. The Midyanim, it appeared, had sinister intentions when they brought Yosef to Egypt, a society which at that time was steeped in decadence and immorality. They wanted to ruin Yosef by compromising his Kedusha, by putting him in a place where – they incorrectly assumed – he would be unable to withstand temptation and would be lured to sin. This is precisely what Midyan did several generations later, at Ba'al Pe'or. They tried destroying Beneh Yisrael by luring them to immorality, which would undermine their spirituality. Appropriately, then, Pinhas – a descendant of Yosef – led the war against Midyan, because this war avenged Midyan's devious scheme both at Ba'al Pe'or and with Mechirat Yosef. Our nation's struggle against Midyan continues to this very day, with greater intensity than ever. Contemporary society champions values that directly oppose the Torah's values of Kedusha and purity, and we are exposed at all times to lures that threaten to divest us of our sanctity. Hashem commanded Beneh Yisrael to wage war against Midyan – because we need to proactively reject and oppose the efforts made to undermine our Kedusha. We must continue waging this vitally important battle that began with Yosef and then proceeded with Pinhas, and work to oppose the sinful influences and lures that we face on a daily basis.

Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” (Oscar Wilde) Our commitments to ourselves and to others should be sacred.

Its apex is in the serving of ones basest inclinations. The danger of Pe'or is real. We live in a Pe'or society. We live in a world of excuses and justifications. We live in a world where we are told to be who we want to be. We live in a world where almost anything goes. We live in a world where we are told not to bridle our passions. We live in a world where we are told to applaud those who are free. But that's not freedom. That's slavery. And it's so dangerous that Moses himself is buried opposite Pe'or, perhaps to always remind us that we as Moses' people must remain opposite of what Pe'or stands for. Only through control, can we be truly free.
