Send us a textIn the first three episodes of this series, Pastor Harris touched on one key topic in each teaching. In episode one, “The Performance Snare”, Pastor Harris discussed the topic of Justification and that we are completely forgiven and have become fully pleasing to God. We no longer have to fear failure. In the second episode, “Approval Addiction”, Pastor Harris touched on the topic of Reconciliation and that we are totally accepted by God and we no longer have to fear rejection. In the third episode, “The Blame Game”, Pastor Harris delivered a message of Propitiation and that we know we are deeply loved by God and no longer have to fear punishment nor do we have to punish others.Jericho was in the Roman province of Judea, the very wealthy lived here including King Herrod and he stayed there five months out of the year so it had to be pretty nice. In and around Jericho there were other palaces as well. The reason it was so popular had to do with the weather and its geographical location. It's situated some 833 feet below sea level in what is now known as the Jordan River Valley. It's the site of the world's largest oasis supported by the world's largest natural spring. In addition, its climate is ideal, it is virtually summer time all year round. Date palms can be found everywhere and citrus fruits of all varieties abound. The fences and the trellises are covered by flowers. The city was and is a tropical paradise. This is true even today, and was also true in the time of Jesus. Even the great Egyptian Queen Cleopatra vacationed there in the winter. However, not only was Jericho very beautiful, it was also very prosperous. Some of this had to do with the tourism the city had attracted. Yet that was only a small part of it. The vast majority of its wealth had to do with a great highway that passed through the city. The great trading caravans of antiquity made their journey there from India and Arabia. Crossing into the lands of Judea at the forge of the Jordan River located three miles east of Jericho. Here in this city, the great caravans would stop and resupply and remit their border tolls making it the tax center of Judea. The tax collectors and publicans of Jericho were very wealthy but paid a huge price for their wealth.. They were hated by everyone in their country and they should have been hated. For the most part they were all dishonest and crooked, it is not hard to imagine that these tax collectors had a real image problem. Many of them wanted to change but they had believed the fourth great lie that Pastor Harris will talk about in this episode, and that is this, “I am what I am and I cannot change.”Support the show

In our third installment of our new series, Christ and Culture, we address the ways in which Evangelicals today feel pressure to appear intelligent, fashionable, and morally virtuous given the ways in which the Christian faith is uniquely perceived and often maligned in our world today. So as we address these pressures, Christians need also to consider ways in which we might develop assurance, fortitude, and resilience as we stand firm on the gospel of Christ despite the shifts currently taking place in our broader Western culture. Jesus Christ came to overcome the works of the devil, and when you have Jesus in your life; you also overcome. "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33, NKJV). In this verse, Jesus is speaking about the Holy Spirit so we can have peace -- even in tribulation. He overcame the world, so we can overcome the world. "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (I John 4:4, NKJV). Greater is Jesus in you than Satan, who rules this dark world. But John points out we have overcome. "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5, NKJV). Who is "he" who overcomes? That would be us -- anyone who believes. "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death" (Revelation 12:11, NKJV). We overcome by the blood of Jesus Christ and His blood must be the focus of our testimony. When you testify and believe that in your heart; you are set free. You are an Overcomer! Before we knew Jesus we had a low opinion of ourselves -- and we should have! But Christ is inferior to nobody. He is above every name that is named. The world and Satan want to point out your faults and shortcomings so they can sell you a worldly remedy. An inferiority complex is an inadequate feeling about yourself. But now because of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, we have become superior to Satan [and all angels]. For the unsaved, an inferiority complex and a superiority complex bring death. But in Christ we are to have a superiority complex; but only because of Him. Join me as we explore these truths. Selah! Excuses are always present and so is doubt. It can be so easy for us to make excuses to try and protect ourselves from rejection or perceived failure. We let our egos come first and convince ourselves that things have to be perfect before we ever start. This inferiority complex acts as a crutch to make sure that if we ever try and fail we can lean on that crutch to hold our egos up. The reality is that we are scared to even start because what happens if we aren't good at the start or people don't like what we have to offer the world. The irony lies in the fact that anytime someone starts something they are almost always going to be bad at it. The things and the people that we aspire to be are just like us except at some point they actually decided to just start. The minute that we understand that we have to first step into the arena and put our internal doubts aside is the first step towards any semblance of success. At the beginning we won't be any good but by showing up day in and day out we begin to get better slowly becoming less afraid of what others might think. Having the courage to be bad and sometimes even disliked is the only way we can overcome the inferiority complex. By being vulnerable and opening ourselves up to feedback and criticism and putting our thoughts and ideas out into the world we are taking the first step towards success. Our inferiority complex can feel personal and emotional like we are being attacked, but most of the time it's all in our heads. You have all the tools available to you to be successful, but most often times we are the ones that are holding ourselves back.

This can lead to annoyance, frustration, feelings of inadequacy, and low self-worth. Since early 2021, I've been haunted by a tweet I read: “If you're not grimacing every time you look at old work, then you aren't growing.” I decided that I needed to put the icky feeling to use. So I'm using it as inspiration for an exploratory journey into creative growth and self-compassion. Because I don't want to live in a world where people grimace every time they look at their "old work". That sounds like hell. So in this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I want to explore how we might enjoy, rather than belittle, the bravery that gave rise to "old work". We will think about the difference between casting and using judgement to develop, mature and grow as people and in our creativity. And open up space for healthy foundational growth that doesn't follow a one-dimensional linear path. It's about how I hold myself and other people. It's about how I relate to EVERYTHING. So, for example, if I was doing the best I could and still grimace when I look back at it, what am I doing with other people who are doing the best they can where they are? What sort of world does this approach create in the long run? Grimace-Growth is Imbalanced | 7:5 It's tough to grow from a healthy foundation when we feel the grimace looking at us. It evokes shame, embarrassment, and humiliation. It can leave us in a spirit of urgency and desperation. What Does Creative Growth Look Like? | 12:46 In The Burnout Society, Byung-Chul Han writes about the rate of acceleration in the world and what is happening to a culture that erodes "intervals, betweens, and interruptions", replacing them with restlessness, hyperactivity and mental exhaustion. Positivisation pedals the idea that action makes us free, yet we see it doing the opposite. In the name of "growth" and "progress", we are becoming automatic performance machines rather than subjective beings with the power "not to do". Growth isn't endless. It hits limits all the time. We reach a point where we won't get taller, our capacity for physical strength peaks, and our hair gets thin. How do you know you're moving in the right direction? What does it mean to keep growing as people? Is this a trap that separates us from ourselves? There Are Different Grimaces | 16:21 Not all grimaces are the same. The same facial expression can communicate different aspects of personal and creative growth. The "Last Big Push" Grimace: a facial contortion that shows you put every ounce of energy into striving towards the end (e.g. getting down the home stretch and over the finish line). The "Something's Wrong" Grimace: reacting to a disturbance in the anticipated flow (e.g. a wrong note, weird flash, bad smell, or strange taste). The "I Couldn't Do That" Grimace: a reaction to seeing someone do something scary or out of reach and imagining yourself doing it yourself (e.g. the idea of public speaking). The "Embarrassed For You" Grimace: cringing at something someone else has done - perhaps a relatable failure ("I know the feeling, and I'm glad it's you, not me") or a judgement ("what were you thinking!?")
