Please enjoy this re-release of a past episode of For the Ages. New episodes will return Fall 2025. Enshrined in our Constitution and etched into our currency, religion is inextricable from the fabric of American political and social life. The ubiquity of religion in our national history has also made it an elusive, at times contradictory, force in this country's growth—one that is associated with freedom and tolerance as often as it is with censure and control. Catherine Brekus, professor of American religious history at Harvard Divinity School, joins David Rubenstein to discuss the complex and fascinating role religious practice and expression has played in shaping the United States. Recorded on November 20, 2020
We're joined by retired USAR Colonel Dr. Ben Perez as he remembers how our nation was founded on religious principles, and we learn how to be the Good News in a world of bad news.

Join us for today's sermon podcast, where we delve into the powerful message drawn from Apostle Paul's prayer in Ephesians, urging believers to share the gospel fearlessly and with clarity. This episode explores the intersection of faith and patriotism, challenging the notion that Christians cannot be patriotic. Emphasizing the true meaning behind the phrase "God Bless America," we reflect on what spiritual blessings are essential for our nation and how we, as Christians, can be good stewards of our nation and faith. Through the lens of biblical teachings, we address the importance of prioritizing God's kingdom and His righteousness in our lives and communities. We draw inspiration from historical figures like George Washington and explore how reverence for God's Word, house, and will can lead to national repentance and renewal. This sermon encourages us all to live out our faith actively, becoming salt and light in our communities and leading our nation back to its spiritual roots. “America – God Shed His Grace on Thee” “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…” - Psalm 33:12 Main Idea: The true blessing of a nation comes not from power or prosperity, but from honoring God through repentance, righteousness, and the faithful witness of His people. Introduction: What Do We Mean by “God Bless America”? - Matthew 6:33 “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” — George Washington, Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1789 “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?” — Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, 1785 “God Bless America” with Spiritual Blessings - Proverbs 14:34 a. Recover Lost Values Micah 6:8 “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.” - George Washington b. Recover the “Faith of Our Fathers” The Mayflower Compact (1620) began with a covenant “for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith.” “To the distinguished character of a Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of a Christian.” — George Washington c. Rebirth of Reverence For God's Day (Sabbath), God's Book (Scripture), God's House (worship), and God's Will (obedience). Hebrews 10:25 “The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease.”— Calvin Coolidge, 1924 III. “God Bless America” Should Also Mean “God Save America!” 2 Chronicles 7:14 a. From Moral Decay Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. - 1 Peter 2:11 (NLT) “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven... but we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace... and we have vainly imagined... that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.” — Abraham Lincoln b. From False Ideologies and Religions Colossians 2:8 “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.” — John Quincy Adams “God Bless America” Through the Church - Matthew 5:13–16 a. The Church Must Lead in Repentance and Renewal “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” — John Adams, 1798 “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.” — Benjamin Franklin, 1787 b. Faith Must Be Active James 2:17 “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men.” — Benjamin Franklin, June 28, 1787, Philadelphia Constitutional Convention Conclusion: A Call to Hope and Holiness - Psalm 33:20–22 America's hope is not in her wealth or might, but in her Maker. “If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.” Ronald Reagan, 1984 Call to Action: Pray for national repentance. Joanne Tramel emphasizes that the values of truth and justice that we hold as Christians are also values to be held as citizens of the United States. Truth is not always what we want it to be, so we are to be open-minded and pray for guidance. A main function of government is the pursuit of criminal and distributive justice and our responsibility is to hold our leaders to a standard that reflects the “What Would Jesus Do” virtues.

The May 12, 2025, EO from the President is supposed to lower prescription drug prices, some say up to 80%. The EO, however, which is not a law, magical wand, or price control, simply directs the Security of HHS, RFK Jr., to negotiate better prices. The May 5, 2025, White House directive titled "Reduce Regulatory Barriers to Domestic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing," tells more of the story. The goal is to reduce costs and make more drugs in the US. Section four of the May 12 order states: "To the extent consistent with law, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (Secretary) shall facilitate direct-to-consumer purchasing programs for pharmaceutical manufacturers that sell their products to American patients at the most-favored-nation price." In other words, more factories, more drugs, less regulations, and direct manufacture to consumer deals. This EO does NOT MAGA or MAHA, it greatly increases the manufacture, distribution, and usage of substances that do that opposite. As does the introduction of funding for universal covid-vaccines.A few key details are left out of the political assumptions and pandering: 1. why do Americans need these drugs to begin with? As the sickest developed nation in the world, that spends the most money on healthcare, it should be obvious the pharmaceutical industry is not helping us - in fact, the opposite seems to be true. 2. even with lower negotiated prices the overall cost can still be exceedingly higher than the price tag of development, marketing, and the earning of honest profit. 3. if, as the order says, America is the "largest purchaser of pharmaceuticals," and "Americans should get the best deal," then we are missing the point; the largest purchaser would indicate higher demand which would mean higher prices; getting the best deal doesn't mean becoming healthier - it means continuing to pay money for things that don't contribute to our health.-*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Sermon preached on May 11th 2025 by Bob O'Bannon over Ezra 7:1-28
Synopsis: The Lord expects that both the church and the state owe him obedience. Every human institution and sphere of authority must kiss the Son of God or be crushed with a rod of iron. When a nation rejects God and his messengers at every level, God rejects that nation at every level. God places before every nation life and death and the N. Kingdom has chosen death. Sermon Text: Amos 6:1-7:17
In this episode, Abbey, Jeremy, and Will explore the concept of being God's people. Specifically, they aim to unpack a question we might ponder as Christians living in America: Is the United States a so-called "One Nation Under God?"

"Hall of Presidents", Originally envisioned as "One Nation Under God" has been a staple at Magic Kingdom since opening in 1971. "Great Moments with Mr Lincoln" since 1964. Both are important attractions, but which does it better? Dan Erik and Jimmy explore each attraction and what makes them special. With our modern age of communication, 24 hour news, social media and algorithms, is "Hall of Presidents" a better version of Walt's dream? Lincoln is not a divisive president like he may have been in the 1860s but if social media were around then, would we still have only 1 country? this one isn;t really "political" but these are important topics. Which attraction will reign supreme? Listen to find out......maybe... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Do you know our Thanksgiving Heritage in America? Jamestown and Plymouth were both early settlements. One town was only after gold and greed, and they paid the price. The other was sent on a mission by God and considered God in everything they did. God blessed them every step of the way.

The fifth and final message of our series One Nation Under God brings Pastor Mel teaching about Christian generosity as well as the tithe. The thematic idea for this series is that political transformation is easy while spiritual transformation is hard. Mel begins by explaining the differences between how Romans and early Christians viewed money. Romans were stingy and self-serving, while Christians were open-handed and generous. Mel explains the distinctions between The First Tithe, The Festival Tithe, and The Poor Tithe. What does the Bible say about the spiritual significance of tithing? Mel finishes the message by challenging us that we fail to find peace with our finances because we fail to trust in God. The world will not be changed by our spare time and our spare money, but authentic Christian generosity has the power to change everything.

As followers of Jesus, we need to use the voice that we've been given to love God and love others. God's priorities are not the priorities of the world. His priorities are saving the lost, unity, love, justice, freedom for those in bondage, and accomplishing his purposes in our lives. Are we fighting for an earthly agenda or for God's will to be done? His kingdom comes to earth through YOU.

In the fourth message of our series called One Nation Under God, Pastor Mel helps us understand the truths about idolatry. The running theme for this series is that while political transformation is easy, spiritual transformation is hard. We often think of shrines and statues when we think about idolatry, but idolatry normally takes on a different form for us today. Mel explains how idolatry may not mean loving evil things, but loving good things too much and making them supreme over God. Some commonly idolized facets of life include success, fame, and identity. Mel provides two tests for our hearts to determine whether we have idols: where do we spend our money and where do we spend our time? The message finishes with a personal story from Mel's own life to illustrate what biblical repentance looks like.

We can choose to chase the ways of this world, or we can choose to chase Jesus. The question is — will we be committed to God's way or the world's way? Maybe for some of us, it's not just the world's way but OUR way. Following Jesus definitely has a cost, but there's a price to be paid for living the world's way. How do we chase after Jesus above all else?

(One Nation Under God, Pt 2)
In the third week of our series called One Nation Under God, Pastor Mel unpacks what the Bible teaches us about sex. He begins the message by contextualizing the Scripture through a comparison of the Roman view sex with the Christian view of sex. Scripture prohibits sexual sins including adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, and incest. Mel breaks down the neurological processes which occur during sex and explains how they are both helpful and motivating in the context of marriage - but destructive in the context of sexual sin. He finishes the message by reminding us of God's grace shown to the adulterous woman in John 8.

In week two of our series called One Nation Under God, Pastor Collin teaches about the Judeo-Christian values concerning the sanctity of life. The main idea for this series is that nations are changed when followers of Jesus give their lives for other people. Part of understanding this is the reminder that "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." Collin explains Summit's unashamedly pro-life position by preaching through Psalm 139 and John 3. He finishes his message by encouraging us to make sacrifices by seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

In the first message of our series called One Nation Under God, Pastor Mel explains some critical distinctions between church and government. Part of the reason our political conversations have become so contentious is because we've made our politics as sacred as the church. We idolize our politicians instead of remaining focused on Jesus. Political transformation is often easier than spiritual transformation. The early church thrived under political persecution because it offered a direct relationship with an intimate God. The first century church was countercultural, and they understood eternal life came by grace through faith - not by works. Through Romans 12 Mel encourages us not to copy the behavior and customs of this world, but to let God transform us into new people by changing the way we think.

Self-Evident Ministries is dedicated to seeing all Americans understand the foundation of our nation and to understand that those rights come from God.Today on the Strong By Design podcast, coach Chris Wilson speaks with Chief Operations Officer Mike Sonneveldt from Self-Evident Ministries. Mike is a national speaker, author, and co-host of the Self-Evident podcast.Find out the vision and mission of Self-Evident which ultimately points back to having a healthy relationship with our Creator. If there is no standard beyond what we as the people determine it to be, then it is just simply our opinion. But our nation, that was founded in 1776, was rooted in God's ‘self-evident' Truth. If we are to be ‘One nation under God' like the pledge of allegiance says, then we must look to the Word of God for the blueprint to get there… and over the last 100+ years, the erosion of God in our culture has proven to be catastrophic as we move further away from the Truth. From theSelfEvidentTruth.com…The name Self-Evident was chosen because as it states in the Declaration of Independence, freedom for all and freedoms coming from our Creator are truths that do not need to be proven or reasoned. Meaning it is truly “self-evident.” "If you stand on conviction, have integrity, follow the lord in obedience, (and) are willing to say yes to what the Lord has for you... the Sky is the limit for where the Lord can lead you." — Mike Sonneveldt Time Stamps00:53 - Welcome to the Strong By Design podcast 01:17 - Introducing today's special guest: Mike Sonneveldt, Chief Operations Officer at Self-Evident Ministries, national speaker, author, and co-host of the Self-Evident podcast 04:38 - Mike offers a glimpse into his life and the purpose behind his work 14:57 - Chris and Mike share who they admire and why 22:51 - How can we give hope in difficult times? 34:02 - The vision for making America great again 50:36 - Understanding the heart of George Washington 58:50 - The influence of small business entrepreneurs 1:08:31 - The vision and mission of Self-Evident Ministries 1:15:45 - Support Mike Sonneveldt and learn more about Self-Evident Ministries 1:16:26 - Please share and leave ratings & reviews for the Strong By Design podcast Resources:Self-Evident Ministries Connect with Mike:InstagramFacebookYouTube Support the showConnect w/ CriticalBench: Youtube Facebook Instagram CriticalBench.com StrongByDesignPodcast.com

The goal of enduring is not just endurance—it's triumph. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses what it takes to be a hero in our generation. Heroes consistently face strong opponents, adversity, and challenges—but it doesn't stop their mission. Instead, they allow those obstacles to make them stronger. We see this truth throughout American History and the Bible. Following Jesus comes with a cost, and Pastor Allen offers several examples of people in the Bible who made great sacrifices to follow the Lord—and their obedience changed the course of history.
