This week on The Best of Car Talk, after years of ranting and raving about bad drivers, Tommy makes a shocking confession. What previously unthinkable driving sin did he commit, and why? Also, Joanne is trying to teach two teenagers to drive a stick shift without needing family counseling; Bert's 280z died on his way home from a successful wild boar hunt; and on Stump the Chumps, we find out if Rich still has to push his Passat into his garage to get it started. LEE DURKEE chats to Paul Burke about his novel THE LAST TAXI DRIVER published in the UK by Oldcastle Books. In a brutally honest interview Lee talks about his fictional driver, Lou, and the life of a taxi driver in North Mississippi, the enemy - Uber, racism and Shakespeare. THE LAST TAXI DRIVER is a darkly comic novel about a day in the life of an exhausted, middle-aged cabbie about to lose his job to Uber, his girlfriend to lethargy, and his ability to stand upright to chronic back spasms. Lou - a lapsed novelist and UFO enthusiast who has returned to his home state of Mississippi after decades away - drives for a ramshackle taxi company that operates on the outskirts of a college town among the trailer parks and housing projects. With Lou s way of life fast vanishing, an ex-dispatcher resurfaces in town on the lam, triggering a bedlam shift which will test Lou's sanity and perhaps cost him his life. Against this backdrop, Lou has to keep driving, and driving - even if that means aiding and abetting the host of criminal misfits haunting the back seat of his Town Car. Written by a former cabbie, The Last Taxi Driver careens through the highways and backroads of North Mississippi as Lou becomes increasingly somnambulant and his fares increasingly eccentric. Equal parts Bukowski and Portis, Durkee's novel is an homage to a dying American industry.Lee Durkee is the author of the novel Rides of the Midway (W. W. Norton). His stories and essays have appeared in Harper's Magazine, the Sun, Best of the Oxford American, Zoetrope: All Story, Tin House, New England Review, and Mississippi Noir. In 2021 Scribner will publish his memoir Stalking Shakespeare, which chronicles his decade-long obsession with trying to find lost portraits of William Shakespeare. A former cab driver, he lives in North Mississippi. The Last Taxi Driver is his first novel in twenty years. Hailed by George Saunders as “a true original—a wise and wildly talented writer,” Lee Durkee takes readers on a high-stakes cab ride through an unforgettable shift. Meet Lou—a lapsed novelist, struggling Buddhist, and UFO fan—who drives for a ramshackle taxi company that operates on the outskirts of a north Mississippi college town. With Uber moving into town and his way of life vanishing, his girlfriend moving out, and his archenemy dispatcher suddenly returning to town on the lam, Lou must finish his bedlam shift by aiding and abetting the host of criminal misfits haunting the back seat of his disintegrating Town Car. Lou is forced to decide how much he can take as a driver, and whether keeping his job is worth madness and heartbreak. Shedding nuts and bolts, The Last Taxi Driver careens through highways and back roads, from Mississippi to Memphis, as Lou becomes increasingly somnambulant and his fares increasingly eccentric. Equal parts Bukowski and Portis, Durkee’s darkly comic novel is a feverish, hilarious, and gritty look at a forgotten America and a man at life’s crossroads.

This week on The Best of Car Talk, Merriam-Webster helps answer the second most-asked question in Car Talk history: which brother is "Click" and which is "Clack." Unfortunately, they can't the answer the most-asked question: How did these jerks get on the radio in the first place? Elsewhere, Lee's mechanic told him he has a cracked "whoop tube," which may or may not refer to Lee's Town Car; a wayward binky has Marietta's driver's seat stuck in a bad spot; and traveling musician Valerie can't decide whether to dump the Dodge van that tows her trailer in favor of a Cadillac—sounds like a no-brainer to us! Also, on Stump the Chumps, we find out if Wendy used the snorkel test to figure out why her husband is fogging up her car. All this and more, this week on the Best of Car Talk.

What Makes Bonita Bee Airport Express a Good Neighbor...The Bonita Bee Airport Express was born in Bonita Bay here in Bonita Springs in 2000. Started by Bob and Kathy Patterson, they built the company from one Town Car in their driveway to a 5 car service that opened up office across 41 from Bonita Bay at the Bonita Storage Inn. In 2006 the Patterson’s sold the company to a local couple, Dan and Jody Costello, who were teachers in Bonita Springs at the time. Jody and Dan threw themselves into the company and grew it further. Increasing the number of clients and building the strong reputation the company has for reliability and quality service. In 2013 the Costello’s sold the company to Dr. and Mrs. G.L. Hicks. Their son Greg managed the company for 2 years and experienced some difficulties. In the fall of 2015 Dr. Hicks’s daughter Nicole and her husband Tim moved to Florida and assumed management of the company. Since their arrival the fleet has more than doubled in size from 7 to 16 vehicles. They have revamped the reservation system, website, and company policies to modernize and streamline the business. They have made it their mission to continue the long standing traditions of the company. An “On Time Every Time” goal and dedication to customer satisfaction is paramount to the company’s culture. That dedication has seen the Bonita Bee named “Best Of Bonita and Estero” 9 years in a row and “Best of the Gulf Shore” for the past 2 years. As a reservation car service, the Bonita Bee encourages clients to book in advance. When you book you flight the Bonita Bee should be your next call! The Bonita Bee provides, primarily, airport transportation to and from the airport of your choosing. However, the company also transports clients going on cruises to sea ports around the state. The Bonita Bee also provides transport to doctors appointments of all kinds, dinner dates or general nights on the town, and as a pet friendly service, have also been known to transport clients and their furry companions to the veterinarian for routine visits. The Bonita Bee’s philosophy is that “We are willing to take you anywhere you’d like to go so long as you’re willing to pay the bill!” =) With the advent of the Covid-19 virus many clients are rightfully concerned about the Bonita Bee Airport Express’s safety measures. Luckily the owner is an MD, his daughter is an RN and the General Manager and Assistant Manager, are both retired EMT-Paramedics! When the news began breaking about the virus the company jumped in to action and secured a stockpile of hand gel and disinfectant wipes and cleaners. All of the vehicles in the fleet were subject to a deep cleaning and new policies were put into place requiring staff to disinfect each vehicle at the start of their day and between each client. Our drivers are not required to wear masks however clients can specifically request that the driver do so when booking their reservation if they choose. The Bonita Bee Airport Express is happy to celebrate our 20th year in operation and would like to thank the Good Neighbor Podcast for featuring our business. The Bee looks forward to serving Bonita Springs and the surrounding communities this year and for the next 20 years!
