It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   BERLIN-MADE MODEL Y WILL USE ‘BATTERY DAY’ TECHNOLOGY "Elon Musk has confirmed some interesting details about the vehicles that Tesla will be producing at Giga Berlin. According to the Tesla CEO, the Model Y that will be produced at the facility will be using the company’s custom 4680 cells and structural battery pack. Gigafactory Berlin will also be using single-piece front and rear castings for its vehicles, on top of a new paint shop." writes Teslarati: "The confirmation of 4680 cells and structural battery packs for the Made-in-Germany Model Y is big news for the electric car community. During Battery Day, after all, Tesla took a very conservative stance when announcing its battery production targets, a strategy that appears to have confounded and disappointed Wall Street. That said, the company did show subtle signs that it may be ready to produce vehicles with its 4680 cells and structural battery pack sooner than expected."   Elon Musk: "Berlin will use 4680 cell with structural battery pack & front & rear single piece castings. Also, a new paint system. Lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk. Fremont & Shanghai will transition in ~2 years when new tech is proven. We do expect to make heavy use of LFP for medium range cars & stationary storage. Prototypes are a piece of cake, but high volume production of a new technology is extremely hard. Takes much longer than people think to climb the production S-curve. I can’t emphasize enough that production is by *far* the hard part.. Bringing a new product to volume production is 1% inspiration & 99% perspiration. You do still need that critical seed of inspiration, but it’s fun & takes ~100 people. Production takes >10,000 people & hurts like hell until the gigantic cybernetic collective runs smoothly. The Model 3 production ramp was sheer agony for two years, but that was do or die for Tesla. No US car company has reached high volume production with sustained free cash flow in ~100 years. Hundreds of car startups all died or were absorbed for peanuts by big three.. Battery pack will be a bonded structure with cells providing shear transfer between steel upper & lower face sheets, eliminating most of the center body parts while providing better torsional rigidity & improved polar moment or inertia. This is a *major* breakthrough. The crash absorption rails can be cut off & replaced with a bolted part for collision repair ".   The impression from Battery Day was that the 4680 would be Plaid/Semi/Cybertruck/Roadster   How different Battery Day could have been perceived.   Will they keep the range the same and use fewer cells? Will they go for more range? Tabless cell. 5 x energy, +16% range, 6x power.  Sandy Munro said that in contrast to 4,416 2170 cells Long Range pack there will be 960 cells of 4680. Tesla Battery day said the cell-to-pack technology means 370 fewer parts.     VOLVO'S NEW SMALL EV IS BASED ON A PLATFORM SHARED WITH POLESTAR "Volvo has confirmed it will build a new small electric crossover based on a platform developed to underpin vehicles from a very interesting spectrum of future cars, including Polestar, Lotus and even those new electric London taxis." says Jalopnik: "Volvo has a plan to boost its battery-powered vehicle sales exponentially in the next five years, and now the hazy gap between next year’s all-electric XC40 crossover and 2022’s planned all-electric XC90 may be filled with something on all-new architecture."   According to Automotive News: "Volvo Cars confirmed it will build a small electric car, which will be a crucial part of its effort to get half of its global sales from battery-powered vehicles by 2025. The model will use the recently revealed Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) that the Swedish automaker helped parent Zhejiang Geely Holding develop."   https://jalopnik.com/volvos-new-small-ev-is-based-on-a-platform-shared-with-1845300345   VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE ELECTRIC SUV MANAGES 208 MILES EPA RANGE "The EPA gave the Recharge a range estimate of just 208 miles. While that wouldn't be terrible on its own, it starts to look a bit grimmer when you consider that the Recharge is packing a fairly sizable battery -- 78 kilowatt-hours, to be precise -- and the same drivetrain as the Polestar 2." says CNET: "Part of it has to do with the body shape of the XC40. It's less slippery than the Polestar 2 or Tesla's Model Y, for example, and wind resistance is a surefire way to eat up range. That shape difference would account for the approximately 11% worse range than the Polestar. Even if things are better in practice than they are on paper, that 208-mile range figure might be enough on its own to cause customers to look elsewhere. Still, if the driving dynamics are as good as in the ICE-powered XC40, then maybe the extra expense of going to the Recharge over something like the Chevy Bolt would be worth it."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volvo-xc40-recharge-electric-suv-range-epa/ n GMC HUMMER EV WILL BE UNVEILED DURING THE WORLD SERIES "A big-time vehicle reveal deserves a prime-time multi-platform debut. At least, that seems to be the opinion of the folks tasked with reintroducing the American public on October 20 to the Hummer nameplate, this time affixed to pickups and SUVs that also wear General Motors' "Professional Grade" GMC badge. And instead of a standalone brand with dealerships full of gas-guzzling off-road beasts, this new, kinder, gentler and fully electric Hummer won't sip any gas at all." reports Jalopnik: "The debut will take place across several channels. As has been the de facto process during the pandemic, the event will be streamed online. But — taking a page from the reveal of the Ford Bronco this past July — it will also be witnessed by watchers of the World Series on Fox and "The Voice" on NBC (at least those who are watching live and aren't skipping commercials). Interestingly, according to The Detroit News the television segments will be spread across multiple commercial breaks as sort of a mini film. We know it'll boast 1,000 horsepower, go from 0-60 in around 3 seconds, have the next generation of GM's Super Cruise autonomy technology, have removable roof panels and be able to crab walk."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/07/gmc-hummer-debut-world-series-the-voice-streaming/   90,000 BEVS JOIN WEST EUROPEAN ROADS IN SEPTEMBER From @auto_schmidt: The perfect storm leads to 90,000 BEVs (7.5% mix) joining West European roads in September   - YTD >400k BEV - More than FY 2019 with 3 months left - Total plug-in market (PHEV/BEV) remains on target to reach 1m volume this year"   TESLA HAS CHANCE TO SURPASS 500K ANNUAL PRODUCTION IN 2020 "As Tesla just recently announced its all-time record Q3 deliveries of 139,300 units—and production of 145,036 units—the company will need to deliver roughly 182,000 units in Q4 to hit its 2020 target of half a million units." according to Tesmanian: "Recently, we learned from a leaked email from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to all employees that the company has a chance to make over 500k units in a year for the very first time in the history."   From Elon: ""When we started Tesla just over 16 years ago, I never thought we would get this far, but, thanks to your hard work and ingenuity, we actually have a chance of making half a million cars in a single year. Wow, that is so incredible!! This all comes down to Q4. To secure Musk's fourth tranche, Tesla still must hit a goal related to revenue or profitability, and that could happen in the company's third-quarter report, the date of which has yet to be announced. Each tranche gives Musk the option to buy 8.44 million Tesla shares at $70 each, about a sixth of their current price. At Tesla’s current stock price of $420, Musk would theoretically be able to sell the shares related to the upcoming tranche, plus three other tranches that vested in recent months, for a combined profit of $11.8 billion, or almost $3 billion per tranche"   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/06/elon-musk-stock-option-payout-tesla-earnings/   PG&E REMINDS EV DRIVERS TO APPLY FOR $800 CLEAN FUEL REBATE BEFORE END OF YEAR "Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is reminding residential customers who have purchased or leased an electric vehicle to apply for the company’s $800 Clean Fuel Rebate before it concludes at the end of 2020.PG&E’s Clean Fuel Rebate is a one-time $800 rebate for PG&E residential electric customers who are EV drivers and is in addition to any federal, state or local incentives customers may be eligible for. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketlace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E EASILY GOES 300+ MILES IN NORWAY "Ford is now testing its hot new Mustang Mach-e electric crossover/SUV in Europe. Naturally, the #1 place to take an electric vehicle is Norway, where approximately 70% of new vehicle sales are now electric (fully electric or plugin hybrid). That’s where Ford has been playing around with the Mustang Mach-E, and the results are looking good" says CleanTechnica: "ord shared that the “all-wheel drive model with a targeted WLTP driving range of 335 miles exceeded energy-efficiency expectations, travelling 301 miles non-stop from Oslo to Trondheim, finishing the journey with 14 per cent battery capacity remaining.” Not too shabby, and that’s not even the extended-range trim, which Ford expects to get a WLTP range rating of 379 miles."   Ford press release says: “Latest testing shows charge time has improved by nearly 30 per cent from early estimates, reaching an average of 73 miles of range within 10 minutes using IONITY fast charging, when equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive.”   The UK homepage at ford.co.uk still has the old time of 58 miles. And 370 miles (Model 3 LR is 348, for £3,000 less, 75kWh battery). 150kW peak charge rate. 99kWh gross.   And if we're playing THIS game, the Model 3 can add 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes.   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/18/ford-mustang-mach-e-easily-goes-300-miles-in-norway/   PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO TURNED INTO SAFETY CAR "Porsche just introduced a new all-electric safety car in its Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland series, which this weekend had a 45-minute opening race on the Circuit de la Sarthe, as part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France." says InsideEVs: "Meet the Porsche Taycan Turbo version, retrofitted to handle the job, but at the same time remain street legal. In fact, while the racing cars were transported on trucks, the Porsche Taycan Turbo safety car drove on its own from Germany to Le Mans on public roads. With 500 kW of power, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds and more than 400 km (250 miles) of range, the Porsche Taycan Turbo is a pretty good choice for the purpose. It's not the first plug-in safety car, as several years ago BMW introduced the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 (and i8 Roadster) safety cars for the Formula E series, but it's one of the first that's all-electric."   https://insideevs.com/news/444796/porsche-taycan-turbo-safety-car   LUCID AIR MIGHT HAVE JUST BEAT TESLA’S PLAID MODEL S ROUND LAGUNA SECA "EV startup Lucid has only just announced its debut car, the Air, but is already setting its sights on lap records currently held by Tesla’s Model S tri-motor Plaid Edition. According to a trackside sleuth who goes by The Kilowatts on Twitter, Lucid was putting its tri-motor powertrain through its paces, and appeared to post a claimed 1 minute 33 seconds lap time at Laguna Seca racetrack in California. Scroll down for trackside footage of the Air in action." says The Next Web: "ccording to The Kilowatts, they recorded the Lucid Air’s time using their own stopwatch. Of course, this is an unofficial time, but on a racetrack where lap times are separated by fractions of a second, the Lucid seems to have a comfortable buffer over Tesla’s Model S Plaid Edition, which completed a hot lap of Laguna Seca in 1:36.55 last year. Lucid has been quite tight-lipped about its tri-motor setup, and the not-so-subtle leak of a Tesla trouncing lap time at its local racetrack is certainly a warning shot of sorts. Bear in mind, Tesla Battery day is next week, and one of the many things that could be announced is Tesla’s tri-motor Plaid Model S."   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/09/18/the-lucid-air-might-have-just-beat-teslas-plaid-model-s-round-laguna-seca/   FIRST TESLA MEGAPACK DEPLOYED IN UK TO HELP KEEP THE LIGHTS ON "In July Tesla Megapack and Tesla Autobidder AI entered the UK market. Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and Harmony Energy have joined forces to launch their first UK battery system. This week, for the first time in the UK, a project using giant Tesla Inc. batteries was used to help balance supply and demand in Britain’s electricity market." according to Tesmanian: "National Grid spent 718 million pounds ($932 million) balancing the network from March to July to cope with low demand and high supply of renewable generation—39% higher than usual, according to BNN Bloomberg. A new computer system used by National Grid has allowed burgeoning technologies like batteries to be used in the balancing market more easily. The 7.5-megawatt Holes Bay energy storage plant in Dorset in southwest England is operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures BV and Harmony Energy Ltd."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-megapack-giant-batteries-are-being-use-in-uk-for-the-1st-time-to-keep-lights-on   TESLA REINTRODUCES ‘ENHANCED AUTOPILOT’ "Tesla has reintroduced the ‘Enhanced Autopilot’ option – offering a cheaper alternative to the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package for existing owners. Finally, the automaker ended up making the Autopilot’s Autosteer and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control standard on its vehicles and bundled the rest of the features into its ‘Full Self-Driving package’ (FSD)." according to Electrek: "The automaker started selling the FSD package for $5,000 and it has gradually increased the price to now $8,000 – following an update earlier this summer. It is leaving Tesla owners with limited and expensive choices. Now Tesla has reintroduced the option of an Enhanced Autopilot package for $4,000 – breaking down some of the features previously only available in the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package;. It’s the same Enhanced Autopilot package that Tesla used to offer and includes all the features that don’t require the automaker’s latest onboard self-driving computer."   EA is: Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon.   https://electrek.co/2020/09/19/tesla-reintroduce-enhanced-autopilot-alternative-full-self-driving/   CHINESE CARMAKERS LAG BEHIND IN NEV QUALITY: SURVEY "China is the world's largest market for new energy vehicles, but Chinese carmakers still lag behind international companies in terms of vehicle quality, according to a JD Power China study released Thursday." says China Daily: "The study also finds that international brands perform better in the exterior, infotainment system, seats, powertrain, and interior categories, while Chinese startup brands like Nio exceed in driving experience, battery and charging. new energy vehicle owners not only expect technological and smart in-vehicle features, but also require high quality. That means carmakers must deliver vehicles with both high quality and advanced technology. In August, sales of new energy vehicles reached 109,000, up 25.8 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers."   http://www.chinadailyglobal.com/a/202009/17/WS5f6328eea31024ad0ba7a387.html   MERCEDES EQS SPIED REMINDING US IT WILL TECHNICALLY BE A HATCHBACK "Now that the new S-Class is out and about, we’re gradually turning our attention to its electric equivalent in the vast Mercedes range. Unlike the EQ C based on the GLC, the EQS will distance itself from the S-Class by riding on a dedicated electric car platform. We can say the same thing about the styling as while the two crossovers have similar proportions and some common design traits, the EQS looks far more futuristic than the traditional Daimler flagship." reports Motor1.com: "A fresh batch of spy shots from the Nürburgring reminds us Mercedes is taking a more practical approach compared to the Taycan and E-Tron GT. While the Porsche and Audi EVs are sedans, the EQS will be a hatchback / liftback as denoted by the visible outline of the large tailgate in the adjacent images. The Tesla Model S has a similar setup, whereas the electric Jaguar XJ and BMW i7 will be sedans judging by the most recent spy photos."   https://www.motor1.com/news/369809/mercedes-benz-vision-eqs-frankfurt/   HIGH-POWER CHARGING TRUCKS BECOME MOBILE POWER SOURCES From Track Experiences to the Ice Experience in Finland, the Taycan is now an integral part of Porsche’s customer driving programmes. However, not everywhere provides the adequate infrastructure for charging the electric sports car en masse. Meet Porsche’s innovative solution: a fleet of stand-alone, high-power charging trucks that offer mobile charging on demand. The Hungaroring in Budapest was the venue for a special Porsche Track Experience just a few days ago, where “Soul on Track” offered customers the opportunity to test the Taycan on a circuit. Such driving events present organisers with a particular challenge, however: when a large number of Taycan cars need to be charged quickly and simultaneously, the local infrastructure isn’t always up to the job. Without a satisfactory solution on the market, Porsche wasted no time in creating its own. With a power rating of 3.2 megawatts, ten Taycan can be charged simultaneously at maximum speed. The battery buffer storage unit has a capacity of 2.1 megawatt hours. This means that up to 30 Taycan in total can be charged by the energy storage unit. The latter is generally recharged with renewable power from the power grid. For example, during a three-week customer event in the Portuguese city of Portimao in November 2019, the power came directly from the nearby photovoltaic systems. The trailers can be recharged very quickly – under good conditions, they are fully charged again within four hours.   https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/company/porsche-high-power-charging-trucks-mobile-power-sources-22285.html     You can listen to all 893 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #804   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY   'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai."   On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions."   https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293   FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats."   Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.”   https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/   VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles.  The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers.  There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem."   Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays."   https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a   CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant   WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html   ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. The New 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback – including the fitment of the easyWallbox – is priced at £26,995, including PiCG. The lithium-ion batteries, with a capacity of 42kWh, give the New 500 a range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 electric is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. The New 500 also comes with a 11kW onboard AC charger. Sherpa mode optimises the available resources to reduce fuel consumption to a minimum -  maximum speed is limited to 50mph; accelerator response is managed in order to reduce energy consumption; and deactivation of both the climate control system and heated seats. The electric motor has an output of 87kW, providing a maximum speed of 93mph (self-limited) and acceleration from zero to 62mph in 9 seconds and zero to 31mph in 3.1 seconds. The New 500 electric is the first FCA car to be equipped with the new UConnect 5 infotainment system, the connected platform designed for the future. Developed with the idea of providing customers with a completely new user experience, UConnect 5 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operating systems and can be used in wireless mode. My Remote: checks the battery charge level from a smartphone; schedule vehicle charging during the most convenient time periods; know the exact location of the car; lock and unlock the doors and set the climate control system.   MERCEDES GLA 250 E 2020 REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and B 250 e plug-in hybrids are available to order now.  . The GLA with plug-in hybrid drive system will follow a few weeks later   "The new GLA 250 e is plug-in hybrid motoring at its best, and for many prospective buyers this could be the GLA to go for. Impressive all-electric running combines with surprisingly sporty yet economical hybrid drive when the petrol engine is brought into play." is how AutoExpress reviewed it: "Joining electrified versions of the latest CLA and CLA Shooting Brake in British Mercedes showrooms is the new GLA 250 e, which shapes up as a rival for plug-in hybrid versions of the latest BMW X1 and X2 and the Volvo XC40. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. The GLA 250 e can recharge at 24kW."   38 miles on EV power, 86mph on the motor.   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/gla/352426/new-mercedes-gla-250-e-2020-review   The Mercedes B 250 e is now on sale, with first deliveries expected in late summer. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280.   CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. "   That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May?   David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/   WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k   "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon."   Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html   Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price.   Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. What will Tesla announce at the Battery & Powertrain Investor Day? Why will this be important? Last year, the Autonomy Event was held at its headquarters in Palo Alto, at 11 a.m. PT on livestream.tesla.com. You should expect the Battery Event to be in April (April 20th to be exact if Elon's more recent behavior is any indication of this). However, Elon recently stated on Twitter that the “Tesla April company talk will be from our Giga New York factory, where we make SolarGlass & several other products. Will also offer customer & media tours.” Either way, California, or New York, Elon Musk, always will kick off the event most likely with another executive. Last year it was Pete Bannon. This year my guess is it will be Drew Baglino the chief technical officer. Show #659   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 6th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Tesla surpasses 2019 goal and delivers 367,500 electric vehicles "Tesla  said Friday that it delivered 367,500 electric vehicles in 2019 — 50% more than the previous year — a record-breaking figure largely supported by sales of the cheaper Model 3." reported TechCrunch: "          More than one-third of those deliveries — about 112,000 vehicles — occurred in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter caps a year that started poorly for Tesla. The company delivered just 63,000 vehicles in the first quarter, nearly a one-third drop from the previous period. The low first-quarter delivery numbers signaled what was to come: wider-than-expected loss of $702 million driven by disappointing delivery numbers, costs and pricing adjustments to its vehicles. However, the company then rebounded, delivering 95,200 vehicles in the second quarter and 97,000 electric vehicles in the third quarter."   https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/03/tesla-surpasses-2019-goal-and-delivers-367500-electric-vehicles/   CNBC noted that it has very little stock waiting to find a buyer because they sell more than they make: "Investors were also watching production numbers. In the second and third quarters of 2019, Tesla delivered more cars than it produced. The production versus deliveries gap widened in the fourth quarter. In the third quarter, Tesla manufactured 96,155 vehicles and delivered 97,000 vehicles. In the fourth quarter, it manufactured 104,891 vehicles and delivered 112,000. Earlier this week, Musk made personal appearances at the company’s Fremont car plant and delivery center to cheer on employees and Tesla fans who volunteered to deliver cars to customers ahead of the year-end deadline. Customers who received their cars in 2019 qualified for an $1,875 tax credit. But if the car was ordered in 2019, and delivered in 2020, they would not qualify."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/03/tesla-tsla-4q-2019-production-and-delivery-numbers.html   Tesla's car shipments grew by 50 percent last year "That trend should continue as Tesla begins delivering the first Model 3s made in its Shanghai Gigafactory 3. It says the factory has already produced nearly 1,000 customer salable cars, and it has demonstrated a production run-rate capability of more than 3,000 units per week -- excluding local battery pack production." says Engadget: "Tesla also plans to manufacture its Model Y crossovers at the plant, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously said he expects the Model Y to outsell the S, X and 3 combined.”   https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/03/tesla-2019-delivered-model-3   Tesla’s market cap is now double Fords "TSLA ended the first week of 2020 above $443 per share. Tesla’s market capitalization is now about $80 billion, more than double that of Ford’s, at $37 billion." notes Quartz: "Tesla’s market cap first exceeded Ford’s in April 2017. The two companies started out 2018 at about the same place, with Ford valued at $52 billion and Tesla at $54 billion. Tesla has mostly been in the lead since. Ford’s market cap last eclipsed Tesla’s in April 2019, after the venerable automaker turned out a good first quarter. Now, Tesla is clearly leaving Ford behind. Investors have reasons to be optimistic. Tesla delivers far more electric cars than any other brand. Its Model 3 is the most popular electric car in the world, selling three times the number of the second most popular model, China’s BAIC EU-Series, in the first 11 months of 2019."   https://qz.com/1779609/teslas-market-cap-is-now-more-than-double-fords/   Tesla short sellers have lost $8 billion "In the last seven months, short positions on Tesla shares have lost $8.4 billion, according to S3 Partners, a financial analytics firm." says CNN.com: "That's more than the short losses on any other company. The second biggest loss for short sellers came at Apple shares, where they lost just under $6 billion in the same period. But Apple (AAPL) is a much larger company and the short positions on it are much, much smaller than those on Tesla (TSLA). Short selling accounts for about 21% of Tesla stock sales currently, compared to about 1% of Apple shares. Short sellers bet that the price of a stock is likely to go down. If it rises before they can cash out their position, they must buy shares at the higher price to cover their bet. Their losses are theoretically unlimited, and often astronomical. Some short sellers have retreated from their positions on Tesla in recent months. About 36% of its shares were being sold short in May, but many Tesla shorts continue to hold on, convinced the market will turn against the upstart electric automaker, especially as established automakers flood the market with their own electric vehicles."   https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/04/investing/tesla-short-losses/index.html   Tesla Turns To Israel For Cutting-Edge Tech "Tesla Motors is setting up a Research and Development office in Israel to capitalize on the country's penchant for birthing innovative startups." according to CarBuzz: "For now, the office will focus on scouting for local startups and technologies that could help strengthen Tesla's future products, representing the automaker in talks and information exchanges with Israeli companies, Globes reports. In the future, however, the office could grow into something more like Tesla's Palo Alto, California R&D office, employing several dozen engineers and working directly with the Palo Alto office."   https://carbuzz.com/news/tesla-turns-to-israel-for-cutting-edge-tech   ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE A ONE-HORSE RACE IN USA "2019 was a year to forget for the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf, with deliveries dropping 8.9% and 16%, respectively." says Bloomberg: "And what of those pricey European models that are supposed to challenge Elon Musk? Porsche is just starting to sell the much-hyped Taycan and handed over the first 130 units in December. Audi sold 746 of its all-electric e-tron crossovers and tallied just 5,369 units for the year. Jaguar was even further behind, delivering 2,594 I-Pace SUVs. To give Musk a more-serious run for his money, automakers are probably going to need models with longer range before plugging in and charging. Even then, the controversial chief executive officer may still have a leg up by building an allure around the company. “Perhaps Tesla’s best asset is its brand,” Joe Spak, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, wrote in a report Friday. “Many consumers are evangelical about their vehicles.”"   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-03/tesla-s-model-3-is-the-only-ev-doing-serious-volume-in-the-u-s   Tesla Model Y Is Now Available To Order In China "Today, we saw a report that Tesla made the Model Y available for order in China, although the production info says "2021." according to Mark at InsideEVs: "The online design studio includes three Long Range versions (just like in the U.S.), although the estimated prices of cars are significantly higher than in the U.S.  It might change when Tesla adds an option for a locally produced Model Y at the Gigafactory 3 (at least the Standard Range Plus version)."   Tesla Model Y estimated prices in China:   Rear-wheel drive: Long Range (540 km/335.6 miles WLTP): 444,000 yuan ($63,742) All-wheel drive: Long Range (505 km/313.9 miles WLTP): 488,000 yuan ($70,059) Performance (480 km/298.3 miles WLTP): 535,000 yuan ($76,807)   https://insideevs.com/news/391049/tesla-model-y-available-for-order-china/   Fisker to sell Ocean SUV for $37,499 "Fisker finally gave the world a good look at its electric SUV at an event in Los Angeles on Sunday — and, for some reason, there was karaoke. " reports Mashable: "The Ocean will cost $37,499 in the United States, or $29,999 after tax credits. That would put it in the same league as the Tesla Model 3, which starts at $35,000. Fisker says the car will have a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge.  Henrik Fisker, revealed that the car's heads-up display will include the ability to show karaoke lyrics.  Fisker says the Ocean will ship to customers in 2022. Of course, as Tesla's production woes demonstrated, these things don't always go according to plan."   "The order books are open now through the Fisker mobile app or the company's website, with a requisite $250 reservation fee. The $250 initial cost applies to both the full-purchase option and the lease deal, the latter of which costs $379 per month, with $2,999 due at signing." writes Roadshow by CNET: "Exact performance details are still TBD, but Fisker says the Ocean will be powered by an approximately 80-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The company is targeting an electric driving range of somewhere between 250 and 300 miles. Fisker says it has global manufacturing capacity across the United States, China and Europe, and the company projects it'll build more than 1 million vehicles between 2022 and 2027. The Ocean's platform will soon go on to underpin two additional Fisker products, which will be detailed in the coming years."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/fisker-ocean-pricing-ces-2020/   56% of Norway’s new cars had a plug in 2019 "Electric cars continue to dominate in Norway, as 2019 saw EV sales rise to 42.4%, up from 31.2% in 2018, according to OFV.  This represents almost a 1/3 increase in EV sales from year to year." writes Electrek: "Adding in plug-in hybrid sales, about 56% of Norway’s new car sales in 2019 had a plug. Sales numbers were buoyed by a record year for Tesla, whose Model 3 was the most popular car in Norway in 2019.Tesla Model 3 was the most popular single model in the country, dethroning the Nissan Leaf which led in 2018.  The Model 3 itself had an 11% market share in Norway, with 15,683 vehicles sold.  This is over 50% more than the second-place VW Golf."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/03/56-norway-cars-plug-in-2019-tesla-model-3-best-overall/   EQC STRUGGLES IN GERMANY "Daimler, for one, seems to be struggling in its home court, selling only 55 units of the its first all-electric SUV, the once-deemed “Tesla Killer” Mercedes-Benz EQC, since it was released in Germany." says Teslarati: "German publication Welt noted that the veteran car manufacturer is hesitant to reveal information about the EQC’s sales, but data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) revealed that there were only 19 units of the SUV that were sold in November 2019. Since the vehicle was released in the country, registrations for the vehicle have only numbered 55."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-killer-mercedes-benz-eqc-flops-germany/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What are your 2020 Predictions?   Mine… EV values will continue to rise. Mainstream press will start to take Tesla seriously. Tesla Battery day will unveil their roadmap to 600 miles of range. Queues at chargers will increase as the less tech-savvy buy EVs.   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 230 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Kia ora,and welcome to Wednesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news that steel output in China is retrenching and falling away fast now.But first up today, we had another dairy auction overnight and another positive one. Prices were up for the fifth consecutive time, this time recording a +1.7% gain in US dollars and +0.9% in New Zealand dollars. Both WMP and SMP posted out-sized gains and in fact SMP prices breached US$3000/tonne for the first time since August 2014 and WMP prices are their highest since late 2016. The cumulative rise for all of 2019 is now +22% in US dollars and +30% in New Zealand dollars. These gains underpin the firming payout forecasts and there is probably upside if they continue as many analysts expect. In the US their expected October rebound in new housing starts occurred, but they were not as strong as expected. Building permit levels however did come in as expected. In Canada, workers at their largest rail network are on strike which will affect Canadian economic statistics. The network has recently announced it is cutting jobs as it deals with a weakening North American economy that has eroded demand. In China, crude steel output fell -4.7% in October from the previous month to 2.6 mln tonnes per day, decelerating from a -2% decline in September. And Beijing is reacting with fury that the top Hong Kong court ruled the local mask ban contravenes Hong Kong's Basic Law. Beijing will reject anything that prevents their mass surveillance programs. China seems ready to emasculate Hong Kong's legal framework. [Advert]With Hatch, anyone can invest in the US share markets.Billionaire Warren Buffett says investors should stick to areas they know, so it’s no surprise that Kiwis are backing technology companies through our investing platform. Companies like Nvidia, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Disney and Tesla regularly feature as our most popular shares. Visit www.hatch.as/investing to buy any of these US-listed shares and learn more. In Hong Kong, HSBC said it will close a bank account that is being used to raise funds to support protest-related activities in the city. The account has been used to pay legal and medical fees for protesters. In Australia, the minutes from the November 5 RBA rate review meeting show it was a lot closer to cutting than markets predicted, but opted for a "wait and assess" approach. The release of their thinking has hit Aussie bond yields, and New Zealand yields have suffered some collateral declines too.And the Aussie Prime Minister, who once scorned the value of renewable energy projects in South Australia, has become a convert, adding Federal funds to increase the size of the Tesla battery there by at least +50% to become an 150 megawatt facility.Just how positive the economic situation in New Zealand is, is again illustrated by the OECD 2019 growth update. Year-on-year GDP growth for the OECD area was stable at +1.6% in the third quarter of 2019, and that was only held up by the US at +2.0%. New Zealand however is expected to record +2.4%.The UST 10yr yield is down another -3 bps today and now at 1.78% and softening. Gold is unchanged at US$1,473/oz.US oil prices are sharply lower today to just over US$55.50/bbl. The Brent benchmark is just over US$61/bbl. Both represent further falls of more than -US$1/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is firm this morning at 64.3 USc. On the cross rates we are now just over 94.1 AUc. Against the euro we are over 58 euro cents. That pushes the TWI-5 up to just on 69.4.Bitcoin is softer this morning at US$8,094 and an overnight drop of -3.7%. These are starting to accumulate; since the beginning of the month the bitcoin price has fallen -11%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes.Get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz and subscribe to receive this podcast in your favourite podcast app - we're on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or subscribe on our website.Tell your friends and leave us a review - we welcome feedback from listeners.

Show #575   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 9th September 2019. Thank you to ROBERT GRACE who has increased his level of support from Producer to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER   CRAIG COOPER has signed up as an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER   A new PRODUCER is KELLY OLAUSON   Another new PRODUCER is JAMES RUSHWORTH   And final new PRODUCER is HELMUT SELKER   PETER MOONEY has signed up to support the show along with MATT ALRIDGE   TESLA BATTERY EXPERTS DESCRIBE MILLION-MILE CELL IN NEW PAPER "Tesla battery research partner Jeff Dahn and his team have released a paper in which they describe this million-mile battery cell." says Charles for Charged EVs: "The new Li-ion battery cell features a next-generation “single crystal” NMC cathode and a new type of electrolyte. Dahn’s team has extensively tested the cells, and believe they could enable a battery pack that lasts over a million miles in an EV. This is a huge advance – the new cells last two to three times longer than Tesla’s current cells – and if the company can bring the new technology into production in a reasonable timeframe, it could radically change the economics of EVs."   The paper says: "“This situation may change with the proposed introduction of “robo taxis”, long haul electric trucks and vehicle-to-grid applications. In the former, vehicles will be driving all day, much like a conventional taxi and undergoing nearly 100% DOD cycling. Long haul trucks will almost certainly run in near 100% DOD situations. Cells in vehicles tethered to the grid will be racking up charge-discharge cycles even when the vehicle is not moving. Clearly EVs destined for vehicle-to-grid applications, robo taxis or long haul trucking, would favor a lithium-ion chemistry that could deliver many more charge-discharge cycles in a decade than an EV that was destined for typical commuter driving where high energy density to give the longest driving range for weekend trips might be emphasized. Electric buses represent another application where duty cycles approaching 100% DOD are used on a daily basis.”"   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/tesla-battery-boffins-describe-million-mile-cell-in-new-paper/   My thoughts: If this is what they’ve made public, what is the current state? How old is this data? “skate to where the puck is” Tesla making their own cells Long after the car is fully depreciated, the battery has high worth for storage Good for Tesla Semi which needs (Can have) a large pack, cars only need 300-400 miles     PRODUCTION OF ID.3 AT ZWICKAU PLANT TO START IN NOVEMBER The countdown is running: series production of the ID.3 is to start at the Zwickau vehicle plant in November. Currently, the last robots are being installed and the assembly line is being commissioned. The ID.3 is the first model in an entirely new generation of electric cars based on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive toolkit (MEB). The ID.3 is making its world debut on the evening of September 9 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA). The first vehicles are to be delivered to customers next summer. With the ID.3, Volkswagen is launching the largest electric offensive in the automotive industry worldwide. In the next three years alone, production of a total of 33 models based on the MEB, spread across all the Volkswagen Group’s volume brands, is due to start. At Zwickau, Volkswagen is converting an entire vehicle plant from 100 percent internal combustion engines to 100 percent electric vehicles for the first time. The changeover to electric vehicles already started at the beginning of 2018 and is to be completed by the end of 2020 within the space of about three years. The body shop and the paint shop have already been largely prepared for ID.3 production. The first of two final assembly lines has already been completed. It is here that production of the ID.3 will start in November; production will then be ramped up step-by-step. A total of 12 entirely new buildings or parts of buildings are currently under construction at the plant site. The existing press shop alone has already been extended and prepared for the new era for a total investment of €75 million. This means that the Zwickau plant will be able to produce all the key body parts for MEB vehicles on site from 2021.   BOSCH AND HANWHA INVEST 230 MILLION IN NIKOLA "US startup Nikola, specialising in fuel cell and battery trucks, has announced that German companies Bosch and Hanwha have invested a total of 230 million dollars with at least 100 million dollars each." says Electrive: "This comes just a few days after the Iveco owner CNH Industrial became the main investor with a 250 million dollar investment. A joint venture for the development of trucks in Europe is also being established with parent company Iveco. In the course of the “Series D” investment round, Nikola wants to earn a total of one billion dollars. The cooperation with Bosch is nothing new for Nikola. For years, the German supplier has been an important development partner for fuel cells and battery technology for heavy trucks. “Bosch’s investment confirms its commitment to the development of hydrogen technology and hydrogen infrastructure,” writes Nikola."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/07/bosch-and-hanwha-invest-230-million-in-nikola/   MCDONALD'S GOLDEN ARCHES NOW DOUBLE AS SIGNPOSTS FOR ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING "In Sweden, McDonald's is catering to the growing numbers of electric car drivers by turning its classic Golden Arches restaurant signs into signposts letting people know where they can charge their vehicles. " reports AdAge: "The company has charging stations at 55 restaurants in the country, making it the largest restaurant chain for electric car charging. Ultimately it wants to offer the service at every drive-thru restaurant. Responding to a survey in which 48 per cent of people said it was difficult to find out where charging stations were located, McDonald's is now making them even more prominent.  Created via agency Nord DDB, the first signs have been installed by McDonald's restaurants in Mjölby and Munkedal. In addition to the current price for charging, the signs also display the prices of Big Macs and Happy Meals, gas-station style."   BYTON SET TO UNVEIL PRODUCTION M-BYTE AT FRANKFURT "Next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Byton will formally introduce the production version of its all-electric SUV, the M-Byte." reports Tom for InsideEVs: "The M-Byte will be available in two configurations: a rear-wheel-drive model with a 268 hp electric motor that pumps out 295 lb-ft of torque. There's also an all-wheel-drive option with dual motors totaling 470 horsepower and 524 lb-ft of torque. Bosch is supplying Byton with its drive motors and power electronics.  The standard battery pack is 71 kWh, and there's also a 95 kWh pack available as an option. Byton had announced that the base M-Byte will cost $45,000 when it launches in the US in 2020, however that was before there was any talk of tariffs on Chinese goods. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. The M-Byte will initially launch in China, late this year. It won't be available in the US or Europe until sometime in mid-to-late 2020, so a lot can happen on the tariff war in that time."   https://insideevs.com/news/369403/byton-to-unveil-production-m-byte-at-frankfurt-motor-show/   ELON ACCEPTS NICO ROSBERG’S OFFER TO DRIVE MODEL S ON THE ‘RING "It looks like Elon Musk will have a "decent driver" piloting the Tesla Model S at the Nürburgring, but that's if the billionaire's words hold true in the days to come." says MOtor1.com: " Last week, Musk tweeted that Tesla is bringing over the Model S to the Green Hell – presumably trying to take the inexistent challenge that the recently-launched Porsche Taycan has set at the dreaded race track. Retired Mercedes Formula 1 racer, Nico Rosberg, responded to his tweet and offered to be the one to lap the Model S. Of course, Musk accepted."   https://www.motor1.com/news/369477/nico-rosberg-model-s-nurburgring/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. For the second episode of a daily Cleantech Talk Today show, Nicolas Zart and I talked about Tesla marketing, Tesla Model 3 battery production, Tesla battery recycling, and some other highlights from Tesla's annual shareholder meeting. But that was just to kick off the show. We also discussed the ongoing insanity of fossil fuel subsidies & politics. On a slightly more positive note, we discussed high-speed rail and a cool new Texas bullet train that connects to Amtrak. Of course, the US rail story is not super uplifting, but it was good to talk about a bit of progress. We ended our chatting with a long back & forth on wireless EV charging, BMW's leadership (more or less) in bringing a car to market that comes with wireless EV charging, and the super odd fact that it's a plug-in hybrid with a relatively small battery.

Jon Moore reporting! This week we look at the Tesla battery in South Australia, one version of vermicomposting and two examples of intensive, organic veggie production. So to the Tesla Battery! The post entitled: Explainer: what can Tesla’s giant South Australian battery achieve? From the blog Random Thoughts explains: It was announced this past week that Tesla has won a tender to set up a 100 megaWatt battery in conjunction with the Hornsdale wind farm. A little background is necessary. Back in September 2016 a huge storm rolled across South Australia. A gas fired electricity generator was closed down by it operators on the ground that electricity spot prices were likely to be too low that day to justify running the plant. As the storm rolled in some wind farms were powered down and some high tension power lines were ripped out of the ground. Widespread blackouts resulted. For some reason, some members of the farther right of politics in this country have a problem with wind power in particular and renewables in general. So the knee jerk reaction was to blame the wind farms even when transmission lines were ripped out of the ground. So electricity supply is political. Will the new Tesla battery system help? Probably not a great deal. Quote: The project will incorporate a 100MW peak output battery with 129 megawatt hours of storage alongside Neoen’s Hornsdale windfarm, near Jamestown. When fully charged, we estimate that this will be enough to power 8,000 homes for one full day, or more than 20,000 houses for a few hours at grid failure, but this is not the complete picture. The battery will support grid stability, rather than simply power homes on its own. It’s the first step towards a future in which renewable energy and storage work together. End Quote It is the grid stability and the example set which is the greatest outcome of this project. Once the idea of batteries set within the grid becomes established, price signals will complete the job. Now we don’t just need electric batteries. Batteries are nothing but a chemical form of storage. The authors of the post are themselves working on a different form of energy storage:  off-river pumped hydro energy storage. This uses the mature technology of the hydro industry to storage renewable energy in the form of potential energy rather than chemical. By using renewable electricity to pump water from say the bottom of a mine to a reservoir at ground level, the energy is held and then released back through the system to turn the potential energy into electric by running the pumps “backwards” and allowing the water to pool at the bottom of the mine again. The storage form is somewhat immaterial, it is the storage to stabilise the grid which is most important. Creative minds are being allied to this matter and the future look bright. There is even some argument that microgrids rather than nation wide grids are a better solution. Localisation and interconnection of generating nodes require less infrastructure and therefore less loss of power moving electricity from say a hydro scheme in one state to consumers in another. Indeed the local seems to be answer to many of the issues we face today. I have argued elsewhere in the blog for localised food production in a piece entitled: In Defense of A Modern Yeomanry – Small mixed farms as the answer. Food, electricity, politics all better serve the citizenry if localised. In that spirit we have a blog post from EcoBLOGic entitled: Vermicomposting: Tips from First Timers. Dealing with “waste” at a local level retains nutrients where they can be reapplied to local food growing systems. Traditional composting can be intimidating and time consuming. Vermicomposting, using compost worms to process organic matter is an alternative with a quicker turn around. It is my preferred method. Long Quote: In the I Love A Clean San Diego office, we have multiple team members who collect food waste to be brought back to their composting bins. This past June, Moriah and Lauren made their own vermicomposting bins and began their composting journeys! With a few simple tools, we enjoyed time in the sun making the bins and learning all the details of vermicomposting! Both Moriah and Lauren have been using their vermicomposting bins about a month now. With that experience under their belt, we checked back in to see how the process has been going. Lauren explained, “I have to say it’s intimidating to have another thing to take care of in my household, but the simplicity and beauty of this natural process are what astonishes me the most, day after day.” Moriah shared how having Emily – our Education Manager and composting expert – in our office as a resource impacted her experience: “Having Emily as a resource has been super helpful. She has even responded to Snapchats I’ve sent to her of the bin to let me know if it looks like it is healthy and thriving. Emily’s help and the resources in our office have led to a pretty healthy bin. The worms are breeding and eating everything much quicker than I expected!” End quote. The point being, it is possible to go from zero to an effective system quickly. The vermicompost is wonderful stuff, I think of it as rocket fuel for plants. Have a read of the piece for more info, it is well worth it. To continue this local theme we have two video posts: From Permieflix: 1.5 Acres of High Intensity, No-Till Vegetable Production – Neversink Farm and from growingarden: Rural New Zealand Quarter Acre Permaculture Farm/Market Garden. The principles explored in these videos are Permacultural in nature. Things like “Waste is simply a resource in the wrong place.” and “Ensure every part of the system provides at least two outcomes.” The income potential is quite staggering. As is the production without large investment in fossil fueled machinery. The systems basically run themselves, once set up and humans maintain the system, collecting useful surpluses. Both videos run 20 minutes plus. Both would fit nicely with the idea I suggested in “In defense of Yeomanry.” Turning golf courses into market gardens. Even if we don’t liberate these landscapes just yet, the principles discussed in the videos are applicable to suburban backyards, suburban front yards and even to balconies in high rise apartments. On that note I’m putting together a small eBook: The one Square Metre Garden - Year round veggies from almost no space. I’ll keep you posted when that comes out! So we can live well, we can live healthily and we can did it with green energy if we put our minds to it. And on that happy note we will end this week’s episode. If you’ve liked what you heard, please tell everyone you know any way you can! I’d also really appreciate a review on iTunes. This may or may not help others to find us but it gives this podcaster an enormous thrill! Thanks in advance!
