Welcome to I Swear on My Mother's Grave and the finale episode of Season 3. Yay! 3 seasons, baby! I don't want to bury the lead…so, I also want to welcome you to the end of my podcast journey with all of you. This is it, friends. I am turning off the mic after this episode, but I might release a special compilation of conversations you haven't heard yet at some point…so don't unsubscribe forever! It's hard for me to say goodbye to you all, and to this show because it has changed my life, AND this is the best community of listeners and now friends, in the world. But sometimes things end. Naturally. And that's how this feels, it feels like the right time. And the right moment in MY grief journey to step away. So, since goodbyes are hard, it just felt fitting to end this journey talking about preparing to say goodbye to those we love, and to share with you all what I learned about sitting with the dying as I approached my Nana's death this past summer. In this episode, you are going to get to hear an excerpt of a conversation I had with Uma Girish, a spiritual mentor and author, who helped me prepare to say goodbye to my 96 year old Nana. I will tell you what those 4 days sitting bedside with her were like as Uma's advice kept rumbling thru my mind, and childhood memories of both my mother, and my Nana resurfaced…and how maybe this entire podcast journey was leading me to this moment. When we first met Uma Girish, she had just written her book "Losing Amma, Finding Home: A Memoir About Love, Loss and Life's Detours." Uma had become a grief guide when she lost her mother, and hosted a podcast "The Grammar of Grief" for some time. Then she became aware of Human Design and has gone on to become a Human Design Guide where she helps individuals discover (or remember) who they have come here to be. The system is a blend of ancient wisdom, astrology, Jewish Kabbala, modern quantum consciousness and genetic coding. This technique is rapidly growing worldwide. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/susan-sherayko/support

This week on the podcast, I am joined by Uma Girish. Uma guides spiritually-minded women who are grieving from loss and helps them cope and hold space for grief. The work she does includes the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, illnesses, empty nest, the loss of a dream, and more. On this episode, Uma and I talk about the importance of giving yourself space when you are grieving a loss, and how to give yourself that space when you teach yoga or own your own business. As a contractor or self-employed individual, it is so hard to take time off, but when we are grieving, we need to give ourselves time and space to heal. Uma also shares tips for how we can hold space for students that might be grieving and more. Enjoy! “Bringing a spiritual response to loss is about keeping your heart open.” - Uma Girish (click to tweet) Nothing compares to the pain of loss. When someone we love dies, we feel the ache coursing through our entire bodies. We are convinced that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. But if we take a moment to look at the impermanence of nature around us, we can understand that the human soul is designed to deal with loss. It’s our society that creates ideas, like having to deal with it by yourself, that complicate our relationship with the inevitable grieving we all experience. That’s why on today’s episode of Personal Development Without The Fluff, we are joined by Uma Girish to discuss grief. Uma is a grief guide & author, and in this episode—she shares her insights on the best methods for dealing with loss. Tune in to this conversation to learn how to approach grief in the most healthy way possible. Losing a loved parent leaves us feeling displaced and unmoored, unsure where home is. But what if that parent has died a world away, soon after you have left her? Not long after Uma Girish moved to the U.S. her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in India. Navigating her illness and death, and then grief was especially challenged at such a distance. What does support look like when you are new to a country and when all you have known well is inaccessible to you? How do you find your way in such an unfamiliar landscape? This new territory brought new ways of thinking and cultivated a strength and resilience which was at first unpredicted. And this led to a life dedicated to supporting others, especially women, as they grieved their losses.

Uma Girish shares her wisdom with Christine and Emma on a deeply moving subject grief and pain. Uma explains how she guides spiritually-oriented women who are grieving a loss. "Whether you’re dealing with the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the loss of a dream or watching a parent die, you just want to stop hurting and find peace. I help you make peace with your pain so you can finally feel a sense of control over your life" Whether you’re unfocussed and can’t seem to get it together; want to find ways to deal with the guilt and regret that keep you awake at night; or just want to figure out if there’s more to life, I can help." Uma Girish describes herself as a ‘Grief Guide’. Lovingly, she holds space for individuals who are grieving from any number of losses, from divorce to death. This is something she has done beside the dying in hospices, as well. And why? Because her own grief around the death of her parents led her here. In 2008, Uma came to the U.S. from India, and within two and a half years both of her parents had died. The shock of the loss put her on an entirely different life trajectory, changing the very core of her values and her sense of purpose in life. “Pain is really the portal to purpose,” Uma Girish says in this wonderful interview. Besides having an extremely soothing voice, and a supremely gentle manner, Uma is also highly articulate on this subject. Her view is that around death, “…people’s masks fall off.” And so working through the layer of emotions that are unleashed becomes not only critical healing work, but a profound opportunity as well. Listen and learn: - Why story telling is essential to a whole grieving experience - Is there a difference between grieving the end of a relationship and a death? - The incredible value of ritual around grief - How to keep on working and managing everyday life when you feel crushed by grief - How to deal with the brain fog that comes with grief - The cost of not grieving fully … and how to go about a full expression of grief Despite – or perhaps because – of the topic, this is an amazingly uplifting conversation. Enjoy!
