Send us a textAs parents of queer kids, we want our children to live boldly and truthfully, to become their most authentic selves, not just accepted, but celebrated, for who they are. We want that same freedom and fullness of self-expression for every member of our families. So often trans and nonbinary people's stories are told only through the lens of their struggles and challenges, including their political battles for legal rights, but trans and nonbinary people live rich and fulfilling lives full of joy and community too. Today In the Den, Sara sits down with special guest Joey Morelli, contributing author to Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People, to offer a window into the real lives, joys, and resilience of trans and nonbinary people—and the families who stand proudly beside them.Special Guest: Jozeppi A. Morelli Jozeppi A. Morelli is an Indigenous transgender queer man who is a retired law enforcement officer/911 World Trade Center First Responder from New York City. He has been initiated into the Hopi Sand Clan since 2021. In his retirement, he has found a second career being a gender educator. Author and public speaker, Jozeppi is one of the authors in the new book and exhibit: Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People created by Peggy Gillespie of Family Diversity Projects and published by Skinner House Books. Middle school is a terrible time for teenage girls. Their bodies are changing. Acne is developing. Boys are starting to look at them. And for whatever reason, girls start being really mean to each other. They often feel like no one understands them, like they have to pretend to be someone else, like they're supposed to mold themselves into what society expects them to be. Carrie Penna remembers these feelings. Now she's on a mission to make sure no Seacoast girl ever has to feel them again. In today's conversation from my makeshift studio in Portsmouth, the Executive Director of Soul Models and I discuss: Why I care about women's issues (00:00) Carrie's middle school experience (02:45) Living in San Diego (07:04) Working at Lululemon in NH (12:50) Why Carrie joined Soul Models (26:05) What Soul Models does (28:02) How to participate in Soul Models (38:18) Boys' struggles vs. girls' struggles (42:55) Soul Powerful event (47:10) Why Carrie froze her eggs (48:58) What's your mission? (58:13) Carrie Penna is the Executive Director of Soul Models, a Seacoast nonprofit that gives middle school girls the tools they need to become confident young women. With the help of facilitators like Amy Tilton or Bridget Jenkins, Carrie creates a curriculum featuring local leaders in art, mindfulness, cooking, and more. Formerly a leader at Portsmouth's (extinct) Lululemon showroom downtown, Penna grew up in Durham, N.H., attended Stonehill College, and also lived in San Diego for five years following a stint working at Dana Farber in Boston. --To get Soul Models into your daughter's school district, visit SoulModels.org. In this episode of the Moms for Trans Kids podcast, mamabeast Dr. Lulu and Kim is joined by Joey Morelli, a trans queer man, to discuss the importance of living authentically and supporting gender diverse individuals. Joey shares his personal journey of coming out later in life and emphasizes the significance of understanding the soul journey that trans individuals go through. The conversation highlights the need for safe spaces, the power of being oneself as an act of resistance, and the importance of role models for trans individuals. Joey also discusses the book "Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Non-Binary People and Their Families," which he contributed to, and the impact it has in creating visibility and understanding. Key Takeaways: Being yourself is an act of resistance in a world that wants to erase and discriminate against trans individuals. Transitioning is not just a physical journey but also a soul journey, and it is important for parents to understand and support their child's self-discovery. Creating safe spaces and providing role models for trans individuals, especially younger ones, is crucial for their well-being and self-acceptance. The book "Authentic Selves" celebrates the diverse journeys of trans and non-binary individuals and their families, providing visibility and understanding. We're living in an era filled with both excitement and fear, where we have new opportunities. Yet the pressure to conform to traditional norms can be overwhelming. The idea that the world is our oyster can be empowering, but the reality is often a struggle against the pressure to fit into a mold. Living up to others' expectations may result in a sense of disconnection from our true selves, creating a distorted sense of reality. How do we break free from doing what's traditional and can it help our children to do the same? How do we challenge the conventional norms and encourage our kids to embrace both new opportunities and what they want? In this episode life strategist, author, therapist and co-host of Be.Play.Love Sophie Chiche joins me to talk about living life the way we want to, why it's so important to do things the way we want to and not the way the world expects us to. Ava Dasya Rasa is my guest today, and she is such a wise woman! As a psychotherapist and author, she has a depth of wisdom to share. We were only able to just touch on what she knows. We talked about brain spotting, a therapeutic technique that now fascinates me. I love effective healing methods!I have a fascinating story about her book and what happened to me from one of its meditation--then she told me it sounded like I was doing brain spotting on myself! She begins to ask me questions she would normally ask a person in a brain spotting session, so you get to hear a little bit of what it might be like. I loved it!I honestly could have talked to Ava Dasya for hours about her connections between spirituality and psychology methods. It was so fun! Authenticity is knowing who you are beyond your limiting beliefs and sharing that human with the world. - Karen Caton- Brunings Karen is a certified life, health and authenticity coach. She shares her background and how she found her way to authenticity coaching after learning that she had built a life based on limiting beliefs that made her feel uncomfortable with who she was as an authentic little girl. Karen shares her experience of being lonely and depressed at the age of 38 and being locked in a battle between her authentic self and her constructed version of herself. She decided to lean into her authenticity and rewrite her story from a place of authenticity. She started using authenticity in her work as a personal trainer and found that it transformed her way of doing business and relationships. Karen became an authenticity coach, creating a space for people to rediscover who they are beyond their limiting beliefs. I absolutely adored this conversation with Karen. You will be able to feel her loving energy radiate through the air and straight into your soul. She is a permission giver. A cheerleader. She gives you the courage to be unapologetically you. And when we can do that, it impacts every single aspect of our lives. I spent a long time feeling like a stranger in my own life and not knowing how to get back to myself. If that's you, this conversation will be a light on your path home. Below is Karen's website if you would like to work with her as a coach. She will also be starting a podcast with Stephanie Bacon, whom I also interviewed. You will hear her episode in the coming weeks. Their website is also listed below. The podcast will be called Authentically Yours. Lastly, a link to sign up for my weekly mindful moments newsletter is also below. The newsletter will recap our show for the week and invite you to try an exercise that will help move you toward self discovery. Love To You All My Friends! Welcome back to rediscover! It's Taurus season, and this month's conversation is all about slowing down and getting grounded in our most authentic selves. We're going inward and examining the spaces that we want to heal, nurture, and grow, and that require vulnerability. From contemplating the concepts of sober curiosity and intentional drinking to surrendering to our circumstances and unpacking what it means to truly design a life that is aligned with our most honest desires, we are digging deep into what it means to know who you are and live accordingly. We're getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, and with being on the outside looking in. Being authentic has nothing to do with being liked or admired, but everything to do with feeling content in our day-to-day lives and comfortable in our own skin. It's not always easy, and it definitely takes time, but we're here to help you out along the way; to hold space for whatever you're walking through and remind you that you're never alone. We hope you resonate with today's conversation and that you feel like you're right here with us - sitting on Jess' bedroom floor, two hands wrapped around a cup of something cozy, having a chat with your best friends.
