Episode 482: Father Yod: LA’s Vegan Sex Guru

Sofa King Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2020

On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we discuss a cult leader (or commune founder?) and spiritual love guru named Father Yod. Yod (pronounced like “load”) was originally named James Edward Baker. James Baker was a very interesting man, if you believe the tales about his past. He was a World War II Marine who allegedly won the Silver Star at the battle Guadalcanal. He killed a man, twice, after the war. He was friends with Jack Lalane and the guy who founded Dr. Brag’s amino acid and vinegar company. All this lead to him being one of the most influential people in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s and a cult called The Source Family. James Baker left his family to move to LA and become a stunt man. It didn’t work, and he found himself hanging out with hippies and beatniks. Allegedly, he robbed two banks and made the money to open a restaurant called The Source. The Source was the first vegetarian/health food restaurant to ever open in LA. It was a massive success ($10,000 a day) and attracted movie stars and film producers. Many say it set the course of LA cuisine and made it the healthy, kale loving city it is today. Baker had studied yoga under the famous Yogi Bhajan. He started to teach at his restaurant and attracted a following of his own. Next thing you know, he’s renamed Father Yod. He starts to recruit young girls, and he makes so much money in his restaurants that he buys a mansion and starts a love commune. Or a cult. Hard to say. A documentary of footage from their own cameras paints a picture of a commune that shares and doesn’t have the typical heavy-handed cult leader. But, the group had influence on the film, so it could just be propaganda? There was sex, multiple wives, crazy beliefs, indoctrination, underage brides, and all the stuff you expect from a cult, but it never got cult dark. Whatever this thing was, Father Yod left a major impression on LA, and to this day his people love him and keep their crazy cult names.   Visit Our Sources: https://filmdaily.co/obsessions/true-crime/the-source-family/ https://gizmodo.com/how-the-source-family-turned-sex-drugs-and-rock-n-ro-1563127606 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_Yod https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Source_Family https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/xd4wv7/source-family-rises-again https://www.ranker.com/list/source-family-cult-facts/drew-grant https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/wtf/the-truly-bizarre-story-of-father-yods-cult/news-story/95e5136dd4cd65b2417064a082987c39 https://laist.com/2019/11/29/source_family_restaurant_vegetarian_dinner_gratitude_kitchen_dec_5.php http://venetic.co/ImGonna.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8MsHfReCQc

I'm very excited to share this interview with Dr. Kahn a renowned cardiologist (seen on Dr. Phil and The Doctors tv series among other great accolaides). This is my second time having him on the podcast and you're in for a treat! What you put in your mouth affects your intimacy. (And I mean outside of the bedroom! :) From libido to sexual response, our diet helps or hurts. We also talk about COVID health and how the studies are showing there are specific things you can do to help your immune system (and of course be very focused on prevention). On our last podcast I shared what I'm doing health-wise and how I think those things helped my health when fighting COVID -- some of those things Dr. Kahn encouraged (and some of them he DIScouraged!) I encourage you to listen in to discover what may be most helpful for your intimate-life and your overall health.  You can find more about Dr. Kahn's work at drjoelkahn.com Check out some of his books: Vegan Sex, The Plant-Based Solution, and his newest one Lipoprotein(a): The Heart's Quiet Killer

Yes, my friends, we get to learn some very interesting things about sex and how it can be taken to new heights when you’re eating like a vegan. This isn’t bait, this is real science and it applies to both men and women!(We keep the conversation clean and informative, but it may not be suitable for young ears)Ellen is a prolific author of 6 vegan health and fitness books including Eat Vegan on $4 a Day, Vegan Fitness for Mortals and Vegan Sex. She’s a certified personal trainer, running coach, and sought after speaker. And, Her family was part of the breast cancer gene studies, and she is the only adult female in her family without it. In this interview, we also talk about:Why Ellen thinks many athletes drop out of their competitive sport as they get older, and the secret to maintaining high energy and mobility while reducing your risk of injury as you age.How races typically end with animal-derived foods as a reward for the competitors, so Ellen decided to sponsor a race with all vegan food - and I think you’ll be surprised to hear the community’s response to that.Plus, she provides very valuable expert advice for anyone at any age who’s starting or continuing a fitness program to remain injury-free and increase your stamina. So, stamina in fitness and in the bedroom - so be sure to listen to the end.Ellen's Website: https://vegcoach.com/FB: https://www.facebook.com/vegcoach/IG: https://www.instagram.com/ellenjaffejones/Twitter: https://twitter.com/EllenJaffeJonesRequest to join our community of rebels at www.eatinglikeyougiveadamn.com/group for recipes and support. If you like what you hear, don't forget to: SUBSCRIBELeave a REVIEWSnap a PHOTO while listening to the show and tag @eatinglikeyougiveadamn on Instagram and FacebookVeg On, Rebels.

In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Dr. Joel Kahn about, well, a lot. Of course we introduce you to his new book, The Plant-Based Solution, which covers all subjects plant-based, but we get into some controversial topics too. We look into how hospital food has changed, or stagnated, since we last spoke on episode 91. We also covered the lectin controversy, the carbohydrate debate (that just came up this month) and if there is actually benefit to a plant-based keto diet and if so, how to navigate it. The highlight of the show was that we actually get Dr. Joel Kahn, known for his sense of humor and co-author of the book “Vegan Sex”, to blush, in discussing the more intimate sexual details. (The truth is I’m blushing just writing/saying it…but the people want to know!!) You know The Plant Trainers Podcast is a family show, but your going to want to listen to the second half without little ears around today.
