Heart disease is the number one killer. But what if you could know your risk factors far in advance? Some cutting-edge tests are changing the game in cardiovascular health, and they're more accessible than you might think. In this episode, Dr. Joel Kahn sheds light on the critical role of early detection and intervention in preventing heart disease. Dr. Kahn, a leading cardiologist, emphasizes the significance of identifying atherosclerosis, the primary culprit behind heart disease, through advanced technology scans before you start feeling any symptoms. Listen to this episode and start preventing rather than lamenting your heart health! Episode Notes Dr. Joel Kahn stresses that even individuals with seemingly healthy lifestyles can have significant plaque buildup in their arteries, highlighting the importance of regular screenings. Benefits of Coronary Artery Calcium Scans The Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scan is a valuable tool for detecting plaque in the arteries, providing crucial insights into cardiovascular health. This scan is recommended for individuals at risk of heart disease, such as those with a family history of high cholesterol. Early detection through the CAC scan can help in developing preventive strategies and maintaining heart health. Detect Heart Disease Early Early detection of heart disease is crucial in preventing its potentially fatal consequences. Tools like the CAC scan and AI-assisted CT scans provide detailed information about cardiovascular health, enabling you to take proactive steps towards maintaining a healthy heart. Regular screening and early intervention can significantly improve cardiovascular health outcomes. Prevent Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in arteries, is a significant factor in heart disease and other health issues like erectile dysfunction. Regular screening, including the CAC scan, can help prevent the progression of atherosclerosis. By addressing risk factors and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can reduce your chances of developing heart disease. This week, Health Check takes a deep dive into the evidence on the relationship between exercise and mental health. Not just whether getting moving can make a difference, but why. Claudia Hammond laces up her running shoes and goes for a jog at the seaside with a group of people who are running for their mental health. Claudia meets the founder of 'Run Talk Run', Jess Robson, and talks to other members of the group about why they find exercise helpful.Back in the studio, Claudia speaks to Jonathan Roiser, Professor of Neuroscience and Mental Health at University College London in the UK. He's about to embark on a major piece of research that should help us understand a lot more about what exercise does for people with depression. As well as explaining what they're hoping to discover, he tells her about the latest research into exercise and mental health. Why does it work for some people and not others, and what's the best exercise for your brain? Then there's the commonly held belief that exercise is good for your mood because it ‘gets the endorphins going', but we know that endorphins are not able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Claudia talks to Dr Hilary Marusak from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit USA about one of the possible alternatives – the endocannabinoid system. Throughout the programme Claudia is joined by Dr Peter Olusoga, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. Together they discuss the many barriers people face to improving their physical activity, including the fact that poor mental health itself can stop you wanting to exercise in the first place. And if getting more exercise really does sound like the worst idea you can think of, it turns out that watching sport on TV might also be good for you.Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Ben Motley Content Editor: Holly Squire

Brownstein's IODINE book: https://amzn.to/3wvQONe Iodine is needed for every cell of the body, and you cannot get enough from diet or food. He is the Medical Director for the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine.
In this captivating discussion, Dr. Carnahan and Dr. Brownstein shed light on iodine, one of the most misunderstood nutrients. They explore its vital role in supporting the health of various organs, including the breast, thyroid, prostate, uterus, ovaries, and pancreas. Key Points ✅ Diseases of breast, thyroid, prostate, uterus, ovaries, pancreas and other organs are often related to iodine deficiency ✅ Many exposures in our environment, including medications, flame retardants, pesticides adn other chemicals contain bromine and chlorine which compete with iodine in our body and contribute to illnesses related to iodine deficiency. ✅ Most people require higher doses than RDI for iodine in order to overcome toxic exposures in the environment and aid in optimal thyroid and ovary/uterus and breast health. How many married couples sleep in separate beds? A lot more than you may think. This episode begins with a discussion about why couples sleep separately and how it used to be a common and recommended practice not so long ago. https://www.newsweek.com/marriage-couple-sleeping-separately-husband-wife-1742874 The interesting thing about fear is that it is an emotion that serves us well. Without fear, we'd all be dead. Yet, sometimes fear gets in the way. We can often be more afraid than a situation warrants. We can be fearful and anxious about so many things it can prevent us from living a full and happy life. Joining me to help explore what human fear is all about and how to control it when it gets in the way is Dr. Arash Javanbakht. Experiencing difficulty walking is one of the most common mobility challenges faced by people living with MS. The good news is that there are things you can do -- both with a physical therapist and by yourself, at home -- that can make a real difference. Joining me to discuss improving your gait, avoiding falls, and what experts are learning from the latest research in this area is the Director of Research for the Department of Health Care Sciences at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Nora Fritz. We're also sharing the results of a study that looked at whether disease-modifying therapies had an impact on the number of hospitalizations or visits to the doctor someone with MS might experience over a 22-year period. We'll tell you about a study that measured the outcome for people with relapsing-remitting MS who were treated with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) compared with the outcome for people with relapsing-remitting MS who were treated with Gilenya, Tysabri, or Ocrevus. We'll share the results from a study that analyzed 56 other studies to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction among women living with MS. We'll tell you about a nationwide study that's about to get underway that will try to answer the question, 'Should people with MS over the age of 65 discontinue their disease-modifying therapy?'
