The Secret of Monkey Island. Full Throttle was LucasArts' eleventh adventure game overall and the tenth to use the company's in-house game engine, SCUMM. It featured full-motion video and action sequences, using LucasArts' INSANE animation engine, which was previously utilized in Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire. It was the first LucasArts game to be distributed only on CD-ROM. It also introduced a contextual pie menu through which the player controls interactions with objects and characters. In contrast to other computer games of the era, which mostly relied on in-house talent for their voice acting, Full Throttle used mostly professional voice actors, including Roy Conrad as Ben, Mark Hamill as the villainous Adrian Ripburger, Hamilton Camp as the elderly Malcolm Corley, and Kath Soucie as Ben's ally Maureen. It was one of the few LucasArts games to use licensed music, featuring songs by San Francisco-area rock band The Gone Jackals.

The Secret of Monkey Island. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our discussion of 2001's Devil May Cry, discussing underwater controls, the camera, combos in combat, and other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Missions 11-17 Issues covered: the two scariest words in video games, the underwater sections, forcing emotional stress through cumbersome controls, putting the player out of her element, pulling you out of the experience because your character is usually a superhero, sailing the ghost ship, game play "jokes," collision detection and keeping the player on walkable space, testing against 2D instead of 3D, 2D thinking in level design, walk boxes, moving the world around the ship, camera relative controls and camera switching, everyone's playing in the pool and Mario has an inner tube, having to model everything and yet keeping a set of fixed cameras, making the mistake of designing the camera around the levels instead of vice versa or in concert, framing for coolness at the sacrifice of player cohesion, being curious about where the camera ends up, attempt to make more vertical game play in Republic Commando, believing you can do anything with the camera and players proving you wrong, making 3rd person game play with a first person mentality, making a test case or prototype that proves out your camera design, lack of block and blocking with an attack, going without block to promote fast and forward motion, having trouble with Sparda, streamlining combos down maybe too much, finding the combo rhythms, physical mastery games, Brett puts the petty in competition, reading the telegraphing of bosses with the camera, the stress of restart/lives mechanics and boss battles, learning for one boss but not gaining thereby, trial and error on bosses, cultural appropriation, being able to defeat Phantom in the hallway, experimentation in game play to find information and secret missions, chapter endings in the Resident Evil series. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Jedi Knight, Resident Evil (series), Frictional Games, Amnesia, SOMA, Halo, The Goonies, Sony Santa Monica, God of War, SCUMM games, Grim Fandango, Thimbleweed Park, Ron Gilbert, Republic Commando, Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver, Remi Lacoste, Prince of Persia, Ubisoft, Full Throttle 2, Mysteries of the Sith, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, Super Mario Odyssey, Diablo III, Dark Souls (series), Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Kirk Hamilton, Maddy Myers, Kotaku Splitscreen, Derv_PNW, Super Metroid, X-COM, Half-Life, Link to the Past, Gothic Chocobo, Ben "from Iowa" Zaugg, Jak & Daxter. Ron Gilbert is a legend in the video game industry. He designed the PC classics Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island and other successful point and click adventure games and created the SCUMM scripting language. Arguable the best thing about Ron’s games is his strong comedic voice. Ron’s games ooze humor. I could have spoke with Ron about his several decades long career in gaming, his comedic influences or his upcoming game, Thimbleweed Park due out in early 2017, but instead we sat in silence for 25 minutes. Ron used that time to work on Thimbleweed Park while I folded my laundry.

Aric Wilmunder: Star Raiders II, Temple of Apshai Here’s how Aric Wilmunder introduced himself to me: “When The Last Starfighter didn’t do well in the theaters and marketing re-branded the Atari 800 Last Starfighter game as Star Raiders II, they didn’t take into account that there was already an actual sequel to Star Raiders that was just a few months away from completion.  I was the designer and solo engineer who worked for about a year on the project as a member of an R&D team inside Atari Coin-Op.  A friend helped me copy the disk image a few years back and when I saw Steve Hales post your tweet about the source code [for Star Raiders] I thought there might be some interest. “The game was close to being finished, but there were still parts that needed polishing like the enemy AI, so I’ve been hesitant to release it since it might be judged as a finished work. I’d hate to wait 30 years to release the game just to get a bad review.” Aric Wilmunder started writing programs on the Exidy Sorcerer computer, then worked at Automated Simulations, writing the Atari 8-bit conversions of Star Warrior; Crush, Crumble, and Chomp; and Temple of Apshai. Next he worked at Atari’s corporate research department, where he worked on Chris Crawford’s Gossip game. Then, in the R&D department at Atari coin-op, he created Star Raiders II for the Atari 8-bit computers — a game that was never finished nor released. Later he worked at LucasFilm games, where his work included the XEGS version of Ballblazer. This interview took place December 5, 2015. Teaser quotes: “A music video on the Atari 800. So it was video and art being displayed on the Atari 800 that was in sync with music that was playing off of a CD.” “[In Star Raiders] Because you’re targeting the Xylons, you’re putting them in your crosshairs, you’re actually their A.I. ... All they had to do was this very simple A.I. to move around, and the closer you track them, the more accurate they become. ... [Doug Neubauer] let the player fight themselves.” LINKS Download Star Raiders II ATR file and documentation (click Show All): https://archive.org/details/StarRaidersII_Wilmunder  Video of unreleased, unfinished Star Raiders II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb03mSdMaYc  Aric’s web site: http://www.wilmunder.com/Arics_World/1980s.html  Custom PC Magazine article about SCUMM and interview with Aric (see page 86): http://issuu.com/duongkim/docs/custom_pc_-_2015.10  AtariAge discussion about Star Raiders II: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/246591-wilmunders-star-raiders-ii-released/

Now many console gamers may not know the name "LucasArts", although some of their titles have come to consoles. But LucasArts is much more known in the realm of computer gaming, as many of their titles have been released on a plethora of home computer platforms. From the Atari 8-bit family, to the Commodore 64, and later to the Atari ST, Amiga, FM Towns, IBM PC, and Macintosh computer lines, LucasArts made their fortune and glory, best known for their amazing graphic adventure games, which utilized their in-house engine known as SCUMM, as well as some top notch Star Wars games. LucasArts continued to publish and develop many games until 2012, when their parent company Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney. In 2013, LucasArts sadly let go of their internal development teams, and now exists solely as a license holder. However, in spite of this, many of their classic titles are available on services such as Steam and GOG.com, and I highly recommend checking them out. Now, for this episode, I will make mention that LucasArts used a special music engine for many of their games called iMUSE, which allowed for dynamic music; music tracks could seamlessly segue-way into one another to best fit the mood. Some of the tracks featured will demonstrate iMUSE in action. Additionally, some of these tracks were originally MIDI tracks, and I have selected to use recordings as they would sound running through a MIDI module known as the Roland MT-32. Part deux of our chat with Tony Sarkees, an attorney in Chicago who loves making things at the local hackerspace as much as he loves gaming. We play This is Your Life, compete in a quiz about C64 games and talk gadgets. Tony is the ultimate mobile consumer, switching his SIM card between Android & iPhone for many years. It all started with jailbreaking an iPod Touch. Chris remembers Tony’s many tweets about his Chumby, a cuddly, user-friendly device that our guest believes has no counterpart. Not too long ago, our guest’s friend Newman passed away and Chris is touched by Tony’s tribute to his cat. Quiz Time The Commodore 64 game Agent USA. The Lucas Arts games company used a programming language called SCUMM. SCUMM stands for Scripting Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. Another terrific Lucas Arts game was Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. Once again our guest defeats Paul! Paul says, “Yo dawg, do you remember Napster?” We discuss piracy and the maker community. Chris suggests the Stuff You Should Know Podcast about TV ratings. Paul suggests checking out the C.G.P. Grey youtube channel, because learning! Chris’ next project is rebuilding his subwoofer. Did you know you could build your own and probably get something better and less expensive? Everything you need is at Parts Express. Paul is hoping to build a gnarly workspace in his office for all this podcast gear. He’s learning Google Sketch Up to create something. He’s starting the center of the sweet desktop with a rackmount equipment stand. Chris shares a very cool site with open designs, OpenDesk. Thanks to all the listeners who bought one of our Tees! Our Think of the Children series continues with analysis of the best stories of the NES and SNES eras. Justin, Cole, Ethan, Gifford, and our guest, Craig reflect on Zeldas, Metroids, Quests, and soft Squares while forgetting your favorite game. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow It’s been a while since The Horrible Show thought of the children, but @pwrglove (Craig) joins Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Gifford to nominate some of their favorite gaming storylines to help round out those kids’ gaming educations. Of course you have to survive some classy babysitter conversation to get to the historical conversation, but we never said our podcast wasn’t a minefield. Gifford takes on us a mobile journey with this week’s On the Spot question about the future of the relationship between app developers and our favorite mobile providers. If that’s too futuristic for you, we will take you back home to the early days of video games as we seek out the stand out storylines of the first generations of video games. We use Nintendo as the time benchmark and attempt to cover the NEs, SNEs, and N64 eras, but only make it through the first two thanks to glorious overanalysis of Zaxxon, King’s Quest, Super Mario Bros, multiple Zeldas, Fantasies, and X-Com. What did we leave out? Probably something important, and feel free to let us hear about it as we finalize our list. Anger takes over the end of the episode as GiffTor and Ethan unleash their fury about their disappointment about Homefront.
