Send us a textIf you're a listener of mine or in any way interested in fitness, I'm sure you have an app for counting and tracking your calories floating around your phone—I know I do.But where did this idea come from? Let's go back in history (cue the cheeky rewind sounds)... It's 1909, and women can't even vote yet, but Lulu Peters was a rebel with a medical degree and a dream: to teach America how to eat and maybe—just maybe—shrink her “too-too solid bod.”Fast forward to 1918, and boom! She publishes Diet & Health: With the Key to Calories—the first bestselling diet book. Suddenly, bread isn't just bread; it's 100 calories. Pie? 300. Food had become numbers. Delish.Around the same time, the industrial revolution told us, "Hey, you're basically a machine!"—and machines need fuel control. Being “super skinny” went from a rich person's nightmare to the total dream. The bathroom scale arrived right on time, gleefully offering up your daily measure of self-worth, and just like that, thinness became a moral virtue. The only way to lose weight is by maintaining a caloric deficit—that's an irrefutable fact. But is counting every calorie really the best path? Counting can be tricky, with user error, inaccurate labels, and wildly variable “calories out” due to body type and countless other factors. We aren't just calorie-burning machines; we're way more complex. Yet, the impulse to quantify everything still has a hold on us.With my programs, I aim to help pave the way to sustainable habits that naturally support a deficit: eating loads of veggies, waiting to eat until you're actually hungry, and managing stress. Boring? Perhaps. But here's the twist: it actually f*cking works. What's Inside:Who invented the calorie and why does it matter so much? The historical path that led to THIN IS IN.What's the problem with relying on calorie counting as your only form of weight loss?Sustainable habits that stack alongside a healthy caloric deficit.Imagine a world without calories. Maybe we'd have less highly processed, low-calorie snacks? Or maybe the thinness of your body would exemplify your moral value? The truth is calories are important, but knowledge and positive habits make all the difference. Are you a calorie-counting junkie?  Let me know on Insta!Mentioned In This Episode:Transform Your Body & Habits In 28 Days.  Guaranteed. There's a disturbing trend that we need to fix. Diet books are supposed to help people, but the more diets we share, the more people seem to become frustrated and gain weight. Today, more than 40 percent of men and 65 percent of women are on multiple diets per year. Despite that, nearly 75 percent of the United States is overweight or obese, and more people are gaining weight around the globe for the last three decades. There are many issues that lead to weight gain, but diet book that push you towards extremes and force you to stress about BS are a big part of the problem. Arnold is here to suggest a different approach, and why a new book by Adam Bornstein called "You Can't Screw This Up" is how we can take a different approach to nutrition, disrupt the diet book industry, and support healthier habits.

Imagine someone telling you that they would only give your diet a "B-" when you've been eating whole foods, plant-based for over 35 years?! Well, that was the average grade Rip Esselstyn's diet received from today's guest, Dr. Doug Graham. Doug is most known for developing and authoring the 80-10-10 Diet Book; which is when 80% of your calories come from carbohydrates in the form of raw fruits and vegetables, 10% comes from plant protein, and the last 10% comes from fat. Not only does he live this way, but he actually wrote the book about it back in 2006. No doubt, Doug has unconventional opinions and data on topics like whole grains, beans, oats, protein, and even mono-eating, but it was wildly educational and eye-opening. You'll learn about the history of why we eat what we do, why cooked food may not be all it's cracked up to be, and how you can level up your own plate each day.   Episode Highlights 10:30 What exactly is 80-10-10? 13:30 isn't that many carbs bad for you? Don't we need more protein? 22:30 Doug's Biggest Fans in the plant-based world 23:30 What does he love so much about raw fruit, and why is it so important? 26:05 So THAT's why they call it a “sweet tooth!” 29:00 What are examples of Doug's breakfast and lunch? 33:30 The case for eating mono-meals 36:25 Why isn't he a fan of cooked foods, including beans, and potatoes? 37:45 What do the five GENS have to do with our longevity and health? (Think: CarcinoGENic) 45:15 Are all these GENS being created in beans and potatoes as well? 47:30 “Don't Eat the Paste.” What in the world is he talking about? 50:10 What did Dr. Nathan Pritikin get wrong? 53:00 Rip gets a B- on his diet?? Are you serious? 57:10 How does he feel about frozen fruit? 57:50 This sounds freaking expensive  1:03:30 Is he a fan of drinking water?  1:04:35 How does he recommend people make this transition? 1:06:30 What's his take on fiber?  1:12:15 Protein - Why does more not necessarily mean better? 1:23:00 what age should you start 80-10-10?   Episode Resources Episode Webpage Watch the Episode on YouTube Doug Graham's Website: https://foodnsport.com  Join our PLANTSTRONG Sedona Retreat - October 9-14, 2023 To stock up on the best-tasting, most convenient, 100% PLANTSTRONG foods, including our cereals, granolas, pizza kits, broths and soups, check out all of our PLANTSTRONG products HERE. James Smith is a fitness influencer and the two-time best-selling author of Not a Life Coach and Not a Diet Book. His no holds barred approach to fitness advice makes him unlike any other fitness influencer today, and now he's bringing his unique philosophy to improving people's confidence. According to James, we've been getting self confidence and how to achieve it all wrong. Confidence is not a surefire belief in ourselves to achieve great things, but rather confidence is being at peace with the idea of losing or things going wrong. When you know it isn't the end of the world, you realise losing isn't the same as being defeated. Like James' brutally honest fitness advice, there's no quick fix to confidence, or any miracle cure. James starts, like he always does, by looking at himself honestly - and truthfully - in the mirror, and all he asks is we do the same as well. James' book is out today. Topics: Why did you write a book about confidence How deep are our confidence issues? Our pain points in confidence The base of confidence and how we build it what is audacity? He bought a copy and read it on holiday and while he may have got some funny looks for his poolside choice of reading, James discovered many new insights about the perimenopause and menopause that he knew would really help his female clients in their quest to reach fitness and weight loss goals. Louise and James discuss the common pitfalls many people go through when trying to exercise, perhaps out of obligation or to lose some of that midlife spread around the middle, and they warn against the plethora of misinformation on the internet about nutrition and training. James's 3 exercise tips for you:  Ask yourself ‘how much do you want to train on a daily basis out of 10?' If your answer is below a 5, don't train but ask yourself ‘why?' and tackle those things first, whether it be stress, lack of sleep or nutrition. Understand why you're not motivated and fix that first.   If you want to lose fat and/or manage your calorie intake, figure out your daily allowance and x7 for the week. You can overconsume on the weekend if you wish, but then divide what's left by 5 for the days in the week and you'll be surprised by how low it is. You will get a clear picture of how much you're overeating on the weekend and it may make you think again about patterns of over-restricting then binging.   Pick any exercise that you like and find rewarding, there isn't a hierarchy of the ‘best' ones, you have to enjoy it and want to do it.   For help with a personalised exercise programme and meal plans, check out James' website at www.jamessmithacademy.com James' bestselling books, ‘Not a Diet Book' and ‘Not a Life Coach' are published by Harper Collins.

Last summer I listened to the book F!ck Your Diet by Chloé Hilliard and it left me nodding my head, saying "I get that" and then laughing my ass off as she talked about food, boys, and diets. I got a taste of what it feels like for you when you say, "Corinne, it's like you're in my head." I totally related to her stories about her life. Today's podcast features a conversation between me and Coach Julie from No BS discussing our favorite parts and how we were impacted. You'll hear us talk about... Diet culture in America and how it's led to women trying to do anything, including destroying their health, to achieve weightloss. The "clean your plate" messaging so many of us received and how we are taught to be totally disconnected from our body as a guide to knowing what we need. How being a strong woman often means you're a bitch, not supposed to cry and how that creates a breeding ground for emotional eating and bingeing. Take a listen. I highly recommend the Audible version of this book. Not all authors can read their shit but Chloé blows it out of the park. He’s the world’s fastest-growing online, personal trainer, is a global fitness sensation known for his no-nonsense approach to health and fitness training and I’m delighted to say that James Smith is this week’s guest on Real Health. His book in 2019, Not a Diet Book, was a huge best-seller and James is back with another hit called Not a Life Coach in which he challenges everything you thought you knew about the path to fulfilment and happiness. James is honest, unapologetic and outspoken and shares with me some of the key areas he believes you need to focus on to succeed in life. From the importance of small steps for exponential growth to building your foundation, working on your motivation and creating the right environment to succeed, there’s a huge amount of advice you can glean from this interview. “When we want to build muscle it's about creating the stimulus and then creating an environment to host your body,” James explains to me. “Good sleep, good nutrition, good meal frequency, good rest and in that right environment, similar to a plant, muscles grow, plants grow. “But when it comes to lifestyle, it's something that a lot of people overlook, they don't respect how important everything around them is. They think 'oh job, this is how much I get paid', they think 'oh relationship, this is how many times I'm having sex', that's fine and they can neglect the bigger picture of all of the encompassing parts that play a role.” Stay healthy and safe and do keep in touch with me for daily postings on Instagram and Twitter @KarlHenryPT. Are you ready to age in reverse?  Tired of worrying about how to stay healthy?  In this episode, we dive into the idea of how we can age in reverse and level up our lives. The conversation focuses on how you can use fitness as the first step into the life you’ve always wanted. Natalie helps us understand what to do when you realize it’s time to surrender and make a change. In this episode I talk with Natalie Jill, a Fat Loss Expert turned high performance coach who helps women Age in Reverse and level up their lives. She joins us to discuss how she became a fat loss expert. At age 47, Natalie has rebuilt and created everything from nothing three times over. Today, we really dig deep into the secrets to aging in reverse, as well as building a community on social media. Natalie shares advice on how we can change our story around fitness and aging, and finally stop stopping ourselves.   Questions I asked: Tell us about your journey to where you are today. Why did people identify with your journey? Why did you write Aging in Reverse? How did you change your mindset toward injury? How can we get people to change their story in their head? How can we stop stopping ourselves? Why is it important to know your why? What do you mean when you say “love your weight”? How do you make the shift in your story? How can we age in reverse? How can you stay fit during an injury? What are you tips for people who want to change how they eat? Topics Discussed: Surrendering Building a brand online. Why you need to be real online. Why you can’t control it all. Why you should find a solution instead of excuses. Finding the evidence that supports what you truly want. Truly digging deep into your why. Learning why quick fixes don’t work Knowing how to make the shift   Quotes from the show: “It’s in those failures that new opportunities come from.” @NatalieJillFit @SisterhoodSweat “There’s a lot of support in connection. Neither sounded particularly appealing, but after reading The Engine 2 Diet book, I was inspired to give this "healthy eating" thing a whirl. In just 8 short weeks of living plant strong, my cholesterol dropped 60 points and I lost 10 lbs...I also did my 2nd Ironman that same Spring and set a 34 minute personal best!  It's been an amazing 10 years and to celebrate a decade of plant-strong living, I spoke with the gentleman who inspired me to start it all: Rip Esselstyn.  Engine 2 Diet   Copyright 2019 All Rights Reserved

When the idea came to me to start this journey, I had no idea where it would take me. All I knew was that I needed to change what I was doing. Period. I was not healthy. And I wasn’t loving myself nearly as much as I could have. So, why did I continue to write and stay on this journaling path, even when many times I wasn’t placing myself in a good light? Because I was sick. And in order to save my own soul I knew I had to strip away what I had consciously learned over the years as well as what I had subconsciously absorbed through my environment. I knew there was no other choice but to start over. Albeit there were a few health concerns within my body when my journey began, I was still not feeding myself nearly enough love. Somehow deep in my core I knew by sharing my story, and putting my thoughts into the written word, would indeed be one of the greatest lessons in my life. But more importantly, it would be the greatest gift I would ever give to myself.   IamOnALoveDietFBpage

Shawn Chhabra-Dash Diet Book Summary- Dash Diet and Wt. Management   Losing weight is not an easy thing to do, and so many of us struggle with it throughout our lives. Just thinking about diets, deprivation, and previously failed attempts to lose the weight and keep it off can be depressing and stressful. Though the weight may have come on fairly easily depending on your phase of life or lifestyle itself, taking it off may not come quite as easily. That is all true until now! The key to successful weight loss is to have a program that will help to not only get you going but to support you along the way. A solid weight loss program should be based in healthy concepts and always work within parameters that never put your body in danger. Though the many fads and trends out there may sound good in theory, they certainly aren’t meant to help you in the long term once you try them out. There Is No Quick Answer—You Have To Work For It We all want to lose weight, and we want to do it quickly and easily. It may be unsettling to think that there is something about your lifestyle that you will need to change, but this is the reality of the situation. You never want to be drastic in your approach because these are the types of habits that not only aren’t going to be something that you can’t keep up with, but they are also extremely unhealthy at the core. Sure the many trends, fads, and diets out there may sound good on paper, but how easy are they to take on for the long term? When it comes to calorie cutting, logging every bite of food you eat, or deprivation in any form, this is not something that you are going to keep up with forever more. Not only that, but these methods are often intended to help you lose weight initially, but will leave you feeling unhealthy and hungry as time goes on. What makes the Dash Diet such a successful program is the fact that it is based on truly healthy concepts? This is a program that was developed to help a specific health condition, and then the implications of this were found to be extremely helpful for weight loss in the process. So you know that what you are getting into is well founded and that you are going to benefit from it in so many ways.   The Key To Long Term Weight Loss Is Here This book is going to show you why there are good sugars and bad sugars. You are going to learn that what AND how you eat really matters. You are going to see that it really comes down to creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You are also going to see that the power to make change comes from within you, and that if you want it bad enough you can achieve that long term weight loss that you have always dreamed about. Though you may feel frustrated in previous weight loss attempts and marked failures, this time will be different. You are going to learn not only what it takes to lose weight and keep it off, but you will also get insight into your own habits. You will see what didn’t work for you in the past and more importantly WHY it didn’t work for you. This is a very broad approach and therefore quite informative as you work towards the success that you have always dreamed of. It’s time to cast aside what you thought you knew about weight loss, and to learn what really works. It’s not just about adapting to the right program such as this, but also learning precisely what went wrong in the past. Not only understanding what you may have done wrong, but also what the diets that you’ve used in the past didn’t give you. This is a learning process and this is the beginning of a long and educational journey! So come into this weight loss journey with an open mind, find and embrace your inner strength and confidence, and be willing to commit to a program that is going to help you and support you in the long term. Though you may have felt frustration in the past, it’s time to really celebrate the transformation that you have always wanted. This is how you lose weight and enjoy success well into your future—so let’s get started!
