Bob was a California Kid when the Source Family and Manson Family were gaining momentum in the late 60's & early 70's Los Angeles scene. Both of these groups influenced the record industry at the time and Bob's brother in-law was the founder of Kama Sutra Records and Family Productions and was a mega music industry exec and prolific producer of the Bubblegum Pop era. This connection would place Bob in a number of epic Hollywood stories you're about to hear.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
As with all cult leaders - absolute power, corrupts absolutely and in the case of Jim Baker and his "Father Yod" persona it was no different. What started out as a hip, vegetarian restaurant and Sunday meditation classes quickly spun into a hedonistic, rock n' roll fueled cult that bankrupted its own commandments for Dionysian lust. Father Yod claimed 13 wives before an impending apocalypse prompted the group to flee to Hawaii - where they were not welcome. Wendy Baker - Mother, Author, Entrepreneur Wendy Baker's life is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of storytelling. As a 14-year-old runaway, Wendy's search for love and belonging led her into the heart of The Source Family, a notorious hippie cult in Los Angeles founded by Jim Baker in the 70s. Her journey within the commune, where she spent five transformative years, was marked by both profound experiences and deep challenges. At 19, Wendy made the brave decision to escape, emerging as a single mother determined to rewrite her story. Today, she channels her passion into helping women, particularly teenage mothers, find their voice and share their stories. Through her work as an author and entrepreneur, Wendy is dedicated to empowering others to overcome adversity and embrace their own narratives with strength and authenticity. uncommonwomen.net wendybakerauthor.com

Welcome to Episode 100! We made it! And, to celebrate, we're covering a hippie trippy drug cult. The Source Family. A cult that began when hustler/con artist, James Baker opened a health food store in California, in the 60's. With his money and fame from that, he discovered the grooviness of drugs, and began considering himself to be a guru. He ran those stores into the ground, and opened The Source, which was a health food restaurant. The stars of the time loved his health food restaurant. It was the place to be for A list Hollywood elites. He taught the teachings of the Age of Aquarius, and whatever else he dreamed up. He would later change his name to Father Yod, and amassed a following of over 200 people, crammed into small houses. And as time went on, he got crazier and crazier, forcing orgies on his entire clan. His own version of faith healing was the gospel as well. It became a psychedelic boot camp of sorts. He also decided he deserved multiple wives, because he was God. If there was any kind of legacy left behind, it was the music. He had a psychedelic traveling band, that made multiple albums, which are the Holy Grail to music collectors today. Run out of California due to allegations of underage liberties, he fled to Hawaii, where his life ended in one of the more creative ways for a cult leader to die. Let's get Trippy Culty! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we take a listen to part one of our conversation with Lili Haydn, the Grammy winning composer and performer who has perhaps the most fascinating and most brutally honest story we've ever recorded. It was so jam packed and unbelievable that we didn't even get a chance to ask her about what it was like starring in Easy Money with Rodney Dangerfield and Joe Pesci. And if you are a listener to this podcast, does that sound like something Josh would pass up? Well, part one of our interview with Lili will tell you all you need to know as to why. Oh the things we learn on this episode. Lili and Josh connect on the fact that he was once at a Mose Allison show and Lili asked to perform with him at the Catalina in Los Angeles back in the 90s. What are the odds? But it's Lili's mother, stand-up comedian/writer Lotus Weinstock and her father David Jove that take up the bulk of the conversation. And for good reason. We touch on subjects as diverse as performing with Jimmy Page, her mother founding The Belly Room at The Comedy Store, Lenny Bruce, the infamous Redlands bust of the Rolling Stones, New Wave Theater, The Source Family, Stanley Owsley, Chevy Chase, Peter Ivers and Joan Rivers. All we can tell you is that this barely scratches the surface. This part one episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast is one of the most intense, harrowing, amazing and truthful episodes we have ever done. Take a listen.
This week we have Dawn Hurwitz!! Another author, and former Source Family member !! It may seem like we have themes on this show intentionally, but I am merely a channel, I can not predict the future!! Dawn, has a book that just came out, a memoir called Psychedelic Wild Child, Coming of Age in The Source Family Cult{ure}By now you probably know my gateway drug to The Source Family is Jodi Wille! The best director in the universe. She directed the Source Family Documentary, which completely blew my mind and shook my reality. I always wanted to see and know what a spiritually dedicated and motivated communal living utopia would look like, and this movie and the source family absolutely were that to a T. I think we are so obsessed with duality we forget that there can be good found in bad, and bad found in good. And in the source family the good was so so cool! I love Dawns experience and perspective in the Family, and can not believe the amazing and insanely awesome life she made for herself after! Jonestown, Branch Davidians, Moonies, The Source Family. We have heard of some of the biggest cults of all time. This week we examine the rise of "micro-cults". Rather than have hundreds of followers that make waves in society following one leader there is a growing prevalence on cults with 10-20 members following a guru, be it a family member or someone who has just latched on to a family. That is exactly what happened to Peter Young when he married into a family who had a "family guru" after several years of marriage he realized that his character who went by "Uncle Robert" was much more than a family friend, but someone who controlled his wife and her immediate family. Through years of battles and a lot of truly mind blowing things happening (stolen wedding rings, "casino church', and surrogacy for the leader) this cult finally made him lose his marriage when he would not submit completely to the teaching. This is a remarkable story about the power of a cult of personality and getting out before it is too late._____________________________________Pick Up "Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger" here: https://shorturl.at/eklP7Peter's Website: https://www.authorpeteryoung.com/—————————————————————Link to all things Not in a Huff Podcast: https://linktr.ee/notinahuffpodcastPlease follow/subscribe to the podcast to be the first to see new episodes when they come out each week. Have you ever heard of "The Source Family" commune? This was a group started in 1969 by Source Restaurant owner Jim Baker. While feeding Hollywood's rich and famous in his restaurant downstairs, upstairs and in the parking lot after closing he was leading a group of young people into a world where he was was the chosen leader and others were to follow. We speak with one such follower who joined early in "The Family's" creation in Wendy Baker who left home at 14 years old and began following "Father Yod" as he was later called and did so until his death under interesting circumstances. Through moves to Hollywood mansions, being kidnapped to Hawaii, getting pregnant in the commune at 16, and escaping to lead a seemingly normal life this week you are in for a fascinating journey into a world of charismatic leaders and devoted followers. Was "The Source Family" a cult or a happy go lucky commune? I will let you be the judge._____________________________________Wendy's Website: https://wendybakerauthor.com/—————————————————————Link to all things Not in a Huff Podcast: https://linktr.ee/notinahuffpodcastPlease follow/subscribe to the podcast to get the new episodes when they come out each week and rate us on Apple Podcast and Spotify! :)

Chris and Chuck Cover another cult, I honestly don't want to divulge to much here but this was a fun one. This weeks tale is a bit less dark and murdery than other cults we've covered and full of love and psychedelic drugs with a sprinkle of what can only be considered the best music ever (I hope Chuck was being sarcastic when he said to write that last bit). You weirdos will notice a difference in the sound of this episode, reach out to us and give us your wildest theories as to why Chris sounds the way he does.

It's been a little while since we brought you a cult story so here we go!!!! Ash was chatting with her friend about The Source family and after diving deeper into it she just had to bring it to all you weirdos! The Source family was established in 1969 by a man named Jim Baker. He had this idea for a hip new restaurant that would bring new age ideas and organic, whole foods all together. It was a great idea in theory, but over time the whole thing would turn on its head. A cult was born and all kinds of wild things were going on, but what would be the most wild was the unexpected end of the cults ~Earthly Spiritual Father~ Jim Baker.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Father Yod or YaHoWha, born James Edward Baker (July 4, 1922 – August 25, 1975), was the American owner of one of the country's first health food restaurants, on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. He founded a spiritual commune in the Hollywood Hills known as the Source Family. The Source Family was heavily influenced by the teachings of Yogi Bhajan and the astrological age of Aquarius. The Family practiced communal living in Southern California and later in Hawaii. He was also lead singer of the commune's experimental psychedelic rock band, Ya Ho Wha 13.
