As with all cult leaders - absolute power, corrupts absolutely and in the case of Jim Baker and his "Father Yod" persona it was no different. What started out as a hip, vegetarian restaurant and Sunday meditation classes quickly spun into a hedonistic, rock n' roll fueled cult that bankrupted its own commandments for Dionysian lust. Father Yod claimed 13 wives before an impending apocalypse prompted the group to flee to Hawaii - where they were not welcome. Welcome to Episode 100! We made it! And, to celebrate, we're covering a hippie trippy drug cult. The Source Family. A cult that began when hustler/con artist, James Baker opened a health food store in California, in the 60's. With his money and fame from that, he discovered the grooviness of drugs, and began considering himself to be a guru. He ran those stores into the ground, and opened The Source, which was a health food restaurant. The stars of the time loved his health food restaurant. It was the place to be for A list Hollywood elites. He taught the teachings of the Age of Aquarius, and whatever else he dreamed up. He would later change his name to Father Yod, and amassed a following of over 200 people, crammed into small houses. And as time went on, he got crazier and crazier, forcing orgies on his entire clan. His own version of faith healing was the gospel as well. It became a psychedelic boot camp of sorts. He also decided he deserved multiple wives, because he was God. If there was any kind of legacy left behind, it was the music. He had a psychedelic traveling band, that made multiple albums, which are the Holy Grail to music collectors today. Run out of California due to allegations of underage liberties, he fled to Hawaii, where his life ended in one of the more creative ways for a cult leader to die. Let's get Trippy Culty! This is an episode about cults music. Music by and for cults, music of The Cult, and so on. But there is one thing I need to make clear. THIS IS NOT A SERIOUS LOOK AT CULTS! This is the exact opposite. And to prove it, I'm joined by Blinker The Star's Jordon Zadorozny and multimedia artist extraordinaire, Vic Malang. There's a ton of cult music out there. We talk about L. Ron Hubbard, Father Yod, Aum Shinrikyo, Charles Manson, Brotherhood Of The Spirit, and several others. Vic reveals his Manson obsession and Jordon has a weird, tangential connection to Jeremy Spencer and the Children of God cult. We also talk about Joseph Stalin, shoegaze pioneer. And we get an awkward story from Jordon about Ian Astbury & The Cult The show finishes with a bit of cult-y history of the Blinker The Star and Vic Malang and their collaborations. Jordan and Vic's music can be found on Bandcamp. Check them out on Instagram @blinkerthestar & @vicmalang. Check us out @PerformanceAnx. Have you ever heard of "The Source Family" commune? This was a group started in 1969 by Source Restaurant owner Jim Baker. While feeding Hollywood's rich and famous in his restaurant downstairs, upstairs and in the parking lot after closing he was leading a group of young people into a world where he was was the chosen leader and others were to follow. We speak with one such follower who joined early in "The Family's" creation in Wendy Baker who left home at 14 years old and began following "Father Yod" as he was later called and did so until his death under interesting circumstances. Through moves to Hollywood mansions, being kidnapped to Hawaii, getting pregnant in the commune at 16, and escaping to lead a seemingly normal life this week you are in for a fascinating journey into a world of charismatic leaders and devoted followers. Was "The Source Family" a cult or a happy go lucky commune? I will let you be the judge._____________________________________Wendy's Website: https://wendybakerauthor.com/—————————————————————Link to all things Not in a Huff Podcast: https://linktr.ee/notinahuffpodcastPlease follow/subscribe to the podcast to get the new episodes when they come out each week and rate us on Apple Podcast and Spotify! :)

Chris and Chuck Cover another cult, I honestly don't want to divulge to much here but this was a fun one. This weeks tale is a bit less dark and murdery than other cults we've covered and full of love and psychedelic drugs with a sprinkle of what can only be considered the best music ever (I hope Chuck was being sarcastic when he said to write that last bit). You weirdos will notice a difference in the sound of this episode, reach out to us and give us your wildest theories as to why Chris sounds the way he does.

"GERMINATING IN THE SOIL"THE WEB OF SOUND by The Seeds (GNP Crescendo, 1966)1966 was probably the high water mark year for Garage Rock: There was Gloria by Shadows of Knight; Psychotic Reaction by Count V; Talk Talk by the Music Machine; We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet by The Blues Magoos, and the Eldorado of the genre: 96 Tears by ? And the Mysterians - just imagine all that Fuzz -Farfisa ripeness! Even yours truly at age 13 had his band The Full House covering all those tunes at the Princeton Hospital Fete that summer. But the undisputed King of Garage Rock was Sky Saxon of The Seeds (one of the house bands at Bido Lito's in Hollywood - also home of Love), and this recording The Web of Sound has all the elements of what one critic called “snotty aggression with some heavier psychedelic flourishes” that made garage rock the indelible statement that it was. The 14 minute “Up in her Room” , with its penetrating bottleneck guitar work by Cooker, has been compared to The Velvet Underground's “Sister Ray”, and the influence of The Seeds, like their east coast counterparts, the Velvets, was enormous. Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and many other credit Sky and his band to be their inspirations.Sky, born Richard Elven Marsh to a Mormon family in 1937, had traveled a long distance spiritually when he joined the Yahowha vegetarian cult following Father Yod, taking the additional name of “Sunlight.” Enroute, he masterminded some of the most infectiously growling proto- punk ever, and on this set he leads us through its many mansions with slimy yet sinuous renditions of Tripmaker, Farmer John, and Rolling Machine.Interesting note: this cartridge is not an 8, but a 4 track - the format that preceded the 8. The carts have no pinch roller, and the tape is engaged by a lever on the player. We must not tell lies... which is why we are always reminding you not to join a cult! Jenni and Taylor dive into some interesting groups this week. Jenni covers the bizarre (and slightly appealing) granola hippy cult of Father Yod. Then Taylor talks about a lesser known Brazillian cult of Flordelis de Souza and her crazy family sex cult turned murder plot. Welcome to another installment of A Little Bit Grim where we tell you grim stories but try to keep it light!
A vegetarian restaurant, the Manson Family murders, psychedelic rock, and hang gliding all touch the story of The Source Family, a short-lived commune in California. In this special extra-long episode we speak with three former members and ask the question; was The Source Family a cult or a commune? At the crux of the story is Ya Ho Wah 13, the in-house band, whose first album was named after Kohoutek, with Source Family leader Father Yod reading spiritual importance into the comet. CORRECTIONS: Solomon was born to Sunflower and Heaven Aquarian, not Robin Aquarian. After his accident, Father Yod was taken back to a house, not a tent, in Hawaii. In the 1960's James Baker, a former Marine, a suspected bank robber, and bodybuilding gym owner from Ohio moved to Los Angeles and opened a health food restaurant on the Sunset Strip called The Source. He changed his name to Father Yod and started a cult based on the belief that he was essentially God. 150 of his followers crammed into a 3 bedroom house in the Hollywood Hills, and, of course, what would a cult be without bizarre sex practices, drugs, a jam band, and a hang gliding accident. On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we discuss a cult leader (or commune founder?) and spiritual love guru named Father Yod. Yod (pronounced like “load”) was originally named James Edward Baker. James Baker was a very interesting man, if you believe the tales about his past. He was a World War II Marine who allegedly won the Silver Star at the battle Guadalcanal. He killed a man, twice, after the war. He was friends with Jack Lalane and the guy who founded Dr. Brag’s amino acid and vinegar company. All this lead to him being one of the most influential people in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s and a cult called The Source Family. James Baker left his family to move to LA and become a stunt man. It didn’t work, and he found himself hanging out with hippies and beatniks. Allegedly, he robbed two banks and made the money to open a restaurant called The Source. The Source was the first vegetarian/health food restaurant to ever open in LA. It was a massive success ($10,000 a day) and attracted movie stars and film producers. Many say it set the course of LA cuisine and made it the healthy, kale loving city it is today. Baker had studied yoga under the famous Yogi Bhajan. He started to teach at his restaurant and attracted a following of his own. Next thing you know, he’s renamed Father Yod. He starts to recruit young girls, and he makes so much money in his restaurants that he buys a mansion and starts a love commune. Or a cult. Hard to say. A documentary of footage from their own cameras paints a picture of a commune that shares and doesn’t have the typical heavy-handed cult leader. But, the group had influence on the film, so it could just be propaganda? There was sex, multiple wives, crazy beliefs, indoctrination, underage brides, and all the stuff you expect from a cult, but it never got cult dark. Whatever this thing was, Father Yod left a major impression on LA, and to this day his people love him and keep their crazy cult names. The story of a hippie cult centered around a Los Angeles vegetarian restaurant sounds destined for infamy, but the Source Family has largely remained unknown. The countercultural tale of Father Yod , his restaurant on Sunset Boulevard, and his rock band-turned-cult remains one of the most fascinating anecdotes of the new age. However, it begs the question: How does a group of hippie vegans become a free-loving cult who will follow their leader anywhere... except off a cliff?
Ross and Carrie sit down with original Source Family member Isis Aquarian to talk about the fringe religious group that attracted more than one hundred flower children into the fold in the 60s and 70s. They discuss the late enigmatic leader Father Yod, the central beliefs of the elusive Source philosophy, and former-member accusations never before heard in full. Was The Source Family a utopian ideal, a damaging cult, or something in between? For pics and videos, follow us on Facebook! You can add our RSS feed here.
Ross and Carrie cough up too much money to attend a one-night dinner inspired by the famous Source Family, a hippie-spiritual commune headed by Jim Baker, who owned one of the first health food restaurants in the country, on LA's Sunset Strip. The group functionally dissolved after the death of Baker (AKA Father Yod) in 1975, but a 2012 documentary brought its memory back to life. Now, local vegan restaurant Café Gratitude, which claims inspiration from The Source Family, hosts its own event, honoring Father Yod and his followers... some of whom attend. Plus, we learn all about Café Gratitude's unofficial connection to the "personal growth" corporation Landmark International, and find out who Father Yod wouldn't vote for in 2020. For pics and videos, follow us on Facebook! You can add our RSS feed here.
In the late 1960s, James Baker transitioned from the spiritually-minded owner of a vegetarian restaurant on Los Angele's Sunset Strip to Father Yod - the leader of a cult based on the belief that he was, pretty much, god-in-the-flesh. The cult was also based in a lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock n'roll. And also vegetarianism. Bust mostly sex and rock n'roll. Roughly 150 counter-culture flower children lived together, first in LA, and then in Hawaii, giving themself super cult-y, crystally names like Moonbeam the Aquarian. And then Father Yod lost his faith and the whole cult went down in a tragic hang-gliding accident. It's a strange story and I enjoyed telling it today, on Timesuck! What happens when you are a founder of a chain of vegetarian health food restaurants on the Sunset Strip and you are heavily influenced by the astrological sign Aquarius? You might be starting a cult. What happens when you change your name to Father Yod or YaHoWha and ask "your people" you are meant to have multiple wives? You are running a cult. Cheryl dives into this interesting Source Family Cult, one that could have been slightly overshadowed by Manson but was definitely a pre-cursor with a less murder-ry side to them and a more peace, and love with a side salad.
Hey look! A new episode! Only many weeks after our last one. We recorded this episode a million years ago and then got completely sidetracked by life. The kickoff episode for our new Raconteur Series will cover The Source Family, a cult active in the late 1960's and 70's. On Episode twenty two, Jac, Alexis & Billy discuss Father Yod and The Source Family Cult. With the help of former member Magus The Aquarian, they detail all of the bizarre sex practices, the murders, the ruined lives and the Manson Family crossover—all the makings of one of the most fascinating stories of cult behavior that you've probably never heard of.
