I took the podcast on the road again. Sort of. I took a plane this time. Either way, I spent four days last week in Colorado at the ninth annual NoCo Hemp Expo in in Colorado Springs. This is the largest gathering of its kind in the U.S. Part expo, part educational experience, it was a celebration of all things hemp. One highlight for me was seeing Lancaster County's own Steve Groff on the main stage talking about cover crops, no-till farming and growing hemp. Another was observing the degree to which fiber and grain are dominating the conversations around hemp, as more people embrace hemp's potential as a material and a food. One of the key moments of the expo for me was a Thursday morning meeting of industry leaders and stakeholders to discuss hemp priorities for the 2023 Farm Bill. A majority of the national and state level trade associations participated. This week's podcast will focus on that meeting. What are the industry priorities for the Farm Bill? Is there consensus? What are the differences and how can they be reconciled? And what is the state of the hemp industry coming out of NoCo 2023? Listen and find out. This week's guests include Wendy Mosher from New West Genetics, Patrick Atagi from the National Industrial Hemp Council, Andrew Bish for the Hemp Feed Coalition, Jonathon Miller from U.S. Hemp Roundtable, Courtney Moran from Agricultural Hemp Solutions, Eric Steenstra from Vote Hemp, Eric Singular from International Hemp, and Herrick Fox from the Meristem Institute. You're probably already familiar with Delta-9 THC, which is the primary cannabinoid in the cannabis plant known for its psychoactive effects. But what's going on with Delta-8 THC? In this episode, Dr. Eric Leas, from the University of California San Diego's School of Public Health, discusses the differences between Delta-9 and Delta-8 THC and a loophole in the Farm Bill that has led to a growing, unregulated market for Delta-8. We discuss the risks associated with this market and he shares some ideas on revisiting regulations at the federal and state level to protect consumers. The mission of Vote Hemp is to gain the acceptance of and free market for hemp as an agricultural crop in the U.S. Vote Hemp is a national nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to a free market for industrial hemp, low-THC varieties of Cannabis, and to changes in current law to allow U.S. farmers to grow the crop. Our ultimate goal is having hemp grown on a commercial scale in the U.S. once again and for the crop to be able to be processed here as well. We educate the public on the benefits of hemp farming and work with grassroots activists, legislators, businesses and family farmers to fulfill our mission. Vote Hemp has been working since 2000 to move federal regulation of industrial hemp farming out of the hands of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to state departments of agriculture. California Hemp Council: The California Hemp Council (CHC) was established to provide a strong, unified voice for the hemp industry before the California State Legislature, Office of the Governor, and Executive Branch. Established in 2019, the CHC is dedicated to supporting and expanding the hemp industry in the state, including the protection and expansion of in-state cultivation, manufacturing, and use of hemp. In California, members of the CHC worked to ensure that the state was ready for hemp legalization at the national level and successfully sponsored and passed state legislation (Senate Bill 1409, Chapter No. 986, Statutes of 2018) to allow California farmers to enter the hemp market and meet the growing demands of hemp product companies. The California Hemp Council (CHC) represents the statewide interests of the hemp industry in The Golden State, including the protection and expansion of in-state cultivation, manufacturing, and use of hemp. The main goal of the CHC is to influence legislative and regulatory issues impacting the hemp industry and its related products and to ensure that the industry has a strong, unified voice in Sacramento. Episode 10: We’re All One or None! All One! With Dr. Bronner’s CEO David Bronner 150 years and 5 generations of family soapmaking Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third- generation master soapmaker from a German-Jewish soapmaking family. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realize our unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” Still family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner’s honors its founder’s vision by continuing to make socially & environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and by dedicating our profits to help make a better world. All-One! David Bronner is Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America. He is a grandson of company founder, Emanuel Bronner, and a fifth-generation soapmaker. David and his brother Michael established Dr. Bronner’s as a trendsetter in the organic body care industry by becoming one of the first brands to certify its soaps, lotions and balms under the USDA National Organic Program in 2003 — marking the beginning of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps’ issue-oriented activism in the natural products marketplace. David made this possible and meaningful by implementing fair trade all over the earth, family farms, and co-ops. Because of David’s personal mission and efforts, today, Dr. Bronner’s coordinates certified Fair Trade projects for all major ingredients, including olive oil from the West Bank and Israel, coconut oil from Sri Lanka and Kenya, peppermint oil from India and palm oil from Ghana. David pioneered the use of 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) bottles for the liquid soaps, as well as a hemp and recycled paper blend to package the bar soaps. As the main facilitator of the Hemp Industries Association’s (HIA’s) successful multi-year litigation against the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), from 2001-2004, David played a crucial role in US farming of industrial hemp and defending sales of hemp foods and body care in the U.S. David is an active supporter of both the HIA and Vote Hemp. He is also a key leader in the fight to label GMO foods in the U.S. David dedicates time and resources to many different issues on behalf of the company’s mission — which encompasses commitments to making socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and to dedicating profits to help make a better world. Did you know that Dr. Bronner‘s knows how to heal the soil to heal the planet? This is a Company that selflessly truly lives by example! The most technically sophisticated form of agriculture, designed to solve our future food & climate challenge and the most ancient, wise, and timeless way of growing is Regenerative organic agriculture. David made this possible and meaningful by implementing fair trade all over the earth, family farms, and co-ops. He and his Dr Bronners’ family is helping turn the earth around. From a corporate view it was not the cheapest idea but from the helping the earth view, it was incredible. He achieved this with his innate fundamental, environmental and social ideals and applying them to the earth around us and applying them to reality to serve the ideals Dr. Bronner his grandfather put on the label. Join us as the quest to unite spaceship earth continues. So excited to release my next Grey Matters Now podcast Episode 10 with David Bronner.
