Is Legalizing Marijuana a Mistake?

Open to Debate

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2023 53:15

According to an October 2022 Pew survey, “88% of US adults say that marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use.” While marijuana legalization is gaining more and more cultural acceptance, effectively regulating drugs has long flummoxed policy and lawmakers. Some are even starting to have second thoughts, especially when it comes to how to practically enforce legal sales. In fact, voters in Oklahoma – one of the nation's leading weed markets –overwhelmingly rejected recreational legalization earlier this year, even though voters backed medical marijuana legalization by a double-digit margin in 2018. Those who argue “Yes” for marijuana legalization say legalization creates more problems for our legal system because it requires extra enforcement to crack down on already robust illegal markets to make way for new, regulated, and legal markets. Additionally, competition from illegal weed markets is undercutting legal sales, which means the expected revenue stream from a legalized industry is far lower than expected. Those who argue “No” say legalization can reduce the burden on law enforcement and criminal justice systems, allowing resources to be redirected to more pressing issues. They also highlight marijuana's medical benefits, such as for pain management and treatment of certain health conditions, which have made a difference in people's lives.    With this context, it's time to debate — and reconsider — “Is Legalizing Marijuana A Mistake?”  Arguing Yes: Paul J. Larkin, Jr, Senior Legal Research Fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation and Teresa Haley, senior policy advisor at the Foundation for Drug Policy Solution    Arguing No: Toi Hutchinson, CEO of the Marijuana Policy Project; former member of the Illinois Senate, and Cat Packer, Director of Drug Markets and Legal Regulation at Drug Policy Alliance   Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to... no, that can't be right... Episode 30?! of Smoke Til' It's Gone or Die! Somehow we've made it this far, and we're so thrilled you are along for the ride. In this episode, Patty tells the tale of the Connecticut River Valley Killer who has never been caught, despite all the evidence compiled over multiple years from multiple victims; this one is wild, with an 'I Survived' tale as well as some described violence that may not be suitable for the softer-hearted. Rylee dives deeper into CBD, how we interact with it, and the potential effects it can have on our little stoner bodies! Rylee's Probable Cause this week is a GoFundMe page for an incredible human we adore, Jess! Please take a look-see at this link right here and if you have some dollars, donate! Jess has been a wonderful, sweet listener and friend and deserves our love and support as she battles Judith, a b-cell lymphoma. Patty's Probable Cause is Season of Justice; Season of Justice (SOJ) is a nonprofit dedicated to providing funding to law enforcement agencies and families to help solve cold cases. SOJ provides grants to law enforcement for advanced DNA analysis solutions, such as forensic genealogy and next-generation sequencing. The organization also awards grants to families to support awareness campaigns, search teams and other initiatives that can assist in pushing their cold cases forward. SOJ's goal is to provide financial resources for both law enforcement and families in order to bring closure to those impacted by unsolved violent crimes. https://seasonofjustice.org/ As always, thank you so much for listening, and we can't wait to be back next episode for more stoned shenanigans and tales of terrifying true crime. After the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, much of the U.S. began lockdown restrictions – a move that dramatically altered the cannabis business landscape.By contrast, legal marijuana markets in 32 states and Washington DC were allowed to stay open during state-mandated stay-at-home orders, according to the Marijuana Policy Project. Then came the stimulus and employment checks, as the U.S. government sought to keep money circulating throughout the economy to counter layoffs and untold numbers of shuttered businesses.Early during the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, cannabis sales skyrocketed across the six U.S. adult-use markets tracked by Seattle-based data-analytics firm Headset.By the week of March 16, 2020, cannabis sales in California, Colorado, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Washington state were already 38% higher than during the first full week of January that year. After a brief dip in late March, when many states were in full lockdown, purchases continued to climb through the summer, peaking during the week of Aug. 31, 2020, at 59% greater sales than the first week of January.Sales declined slightly toward the end of 2020 before surging again in the spring of 2021, around the marijuana industry's unofficial April holiday, 4/20.Since then, U.S. cannabis sales in those markets have been gradually slowing, possibly returning closer to a pre-pandemic normal, according to Headset.Episode 919 The #TalkingHedge looks at MJ Biz Daily's article...https://youtu.be/hehq84BUbF0

As a kid who grew up with the D.A.R.E program, to becoming co-founder of a first mover in the cannabis investment space, Emily Paxhia has had quite a life and Founders Journey.  Growing up, she found an early passion in the rough sport of sailing. Predominantly a “boys sport”, her father reassured her that gender was a false barrier in pursuing her passions. She went on to skipper many, many crews, and so much more. A series of tragedies struck her family when she was in High School and College, losing both her father, and later mother, to cancer. A passing comment from a hospice worker, during her fathers illness she learned of the medicinal use of cannabis.  After graduate school in New York, and years focusing on Macro trends consulting for some major brands, it was her move from New York City to San Francisco in 2011 that opened her to the opportunity of Cannabis. Cannabis decriminalization has been a long and complex process in California. But with people lined up down the block for Cannabis retail, when retail is supposedly dead, Emily had her spark moment that Cannabis was the future and the time is now! Circle in her brother Morgan, who, as she says, was “born with a calculator in his hand”; things started to take shape. They are now raising their third fund. Please enjoy the Founders Journey of Emily Paxia, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Poseidon Asset Management Professional Summary: Emily L. Paxhia is a co-founder and one of the managing directors of Poseidon Investment Management, LLC (“Poseidon”), which has three dedicated investment funds in the cannabis industry. Emily has reviewed thousands of companies in the cannabis industry and has worked with countless founders in many capacities. She has helped to shape founders' pitch preparations, go-to market strategies and product launches, and she has advised companies on day-to-day business operations. Emily has held board seats for multiple portfolio companies and participates as an adviser to multiple teams. Further, she has dedicated time and energy to supporting policy groups and has served on the Board of Directors of the Marijuana Policy Project. She also currently serves on the Board of Directors of Athletes for CARE. Emily graduated from New York University with an M.A. in Psychology in 2008. She graduated from Skidmore College with a B.A. in Psychology in 2002. Company Summary: Poseidon was founded by siblings Emily & Morgan Paxhia in 2013, making their first fund one of the longest running dedicated cannabis investment funds. The Poseidon team has focused on a diversified strategy covering a range of company stages and industry sub-sectors across the capital spectrum. Now in the seventh year of conducting due diligence, deploying capital, and serving on multiple company Board of Directors, the team is considered a leader in the cannabis industry. This recognition, in conjunction with Poseidon being a first mover in the cannabis investment space, has led to a level of trust with industry insiders.
