Two Alabama Political Firestorms to Start the New Year Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) head David Bronner recently published an article in the RSA's monthly publication The Advisor in which he bashed conservatives and conservative organizations, lamenting that we never offer any positive solutions and then pitching gambling as the panacea for all that ails the state. He named 1819 News specifically as one of those “smart” but troublesome organizations. Bronner added to his attack with a letter to the editor of Lagniappe Daily in Mobile, criticizing 1819 News' Editor-in-Chief Jeff Poor. Turning to the other firestorm, there was an obviously coordinated communications strategy in which numerous state agencies showered Governor Kay Ivey with praises almost in eulogistic fashion. In the wake of those adulations, rumors have abounded that she is going to step down. When 1819 News reached out to her office to see if. these rumors were true, we were told "No Comment." All of that has set the conspiracy wheels ablaze as her stepping down would hand not only the throne to Lt. Gov Will Ainsworth but also incumbency going into what could be a hotly contested gubernatorial primary in 2026. David is active in campaigns for fair trade, sustainable agriculture, animal rights, and played a key role in the mission to label GMOs. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Fans!https://www.realorganicproject.org/1000-real-fans/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

In this episode of Psychedelics Weekly, Joe and temporary-Colorado-resident Kyle once again record in-person, discussing how psychedelics could change business, the drug war and safe supply, and more.  They cover:  -a Rolling Stone profile on David Bronner, who makes the case for multi-stakeholder capitalism; where businesses are accountable to their workers, customers, the environment, and surrounding Indigenous communities instead of just investors – an idea more people would likely align with after a psychedelic experience;  -The first psilocybin service center in Oregon (EPIC Healing Eugene) finally receiving their license via the Oregon Health Authority; -A man who saw his color blindness improve for four months after a 5g mushroom experience; -Delaware officially legalizing recreational cannabis;  -The opening of 'The Drugs Store' in Vancouver, British Columbia: a mobile store selling drugs illegally as a response to the opioid epidemic and constant influx of untested and laced drugs – the "inevitable result of the government doing nothing" towards offering a safe supply;  -and a survey from the CDC showing that cannabis use among teenagers has declined since legal dispensaries began opening, disproving one of the most common prohibitionist arguments that legalization would only increase use.  And of course, these topics bring on a lot of conversation: how businesses need to be more reflective on how they're operating; concern over if too much regulation is nerfing the world; the human cost of the drug war and the ever-escalating amount of ODs and drug poisoning cases; HPPD and the need for research around psychedelics and vision/perception; why we will always need both clinical access and the recreational underground, and more. www.psychedelicstoday.com

“IN ALL WE DO, LET US BE generous, fair & loving to Spaceship Earth and all its inhabitants. For we're ALL-ONE OR NONE!”. These are just some of the more than 3000 words you will find on Dr. Bronner's soap label.  Today's guest is David Bronner, the grandson of Dr. Bronner, 5th generation soap maker and Cosmic Engagement Officer of Dr. Bronner's. While I've been buying Dr. Bronner's products for years, it wasn't until I watched the documentary Seeding Change that I dug deeper into the company's commitment to making socially and environmentally responsible products.  A quick disclaimer, in this conversation David shares some of his personal experience with psychedelics and cannabis in the context of his personal and spiritual journal . Regardless of whether or not this resonates with you, I invite you to be open to the big picture of this conversation and his belief in unity, in caring for the earth and its people.    About David  David Bronner is Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner's, the top-selling natural brand of soaps in North America and producer of a range of organic body care and food products. David Bronner is the CEO, or Cosmic Engagement Officer, for Dr. Bronner's. Family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner's makes socially & environmentally responsible products of the highest quality—all while dedicating their profits to help make a better world. David and the rest of the Bronner family are leaders that set an example of being human, and supporting humanity, at the core of everything they do. You can learn more and keep up with what Dr. Bronner's is doing by visiting their website. In this episode we discuss How Dr. Bronner's instigated a fight with the DEA over hemp, and won Why organic certification doesn't go far enough The most effective tool we have for fighting climate change The cultural norm we'll look back on as “cruel and unusual punishment” What Patagonia's founder believes is required reading for those who are serious about transforming business to help save our home planet Key Takeaways: I'm reminded by the Margaret Mead quote “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” It's incredible to see the impact this one company, Dr. Bronner's, has made by committing to drive social and environmental change. Just imagine what the world would look like, if we all behaved as trusted stewards of the planet and humankind. As consumers, we can start demanding more than just organic. We can go further in our expectations of the food and products we bring into our homes. The ROA created the Regenerative Organic Certification by combining the best standards across soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness into a single certificate. With the objective to heal a broken system, repair a damaged planet, and empower farmers and eaters to create a better future through regenerative organic farming. Look out for the Regenerative Organic Certification on products you buy. The immense healing power in psychedelic therapy for PTSD, depression, anxiety and addiction. I'm very grateful for the support Dr. Bronner's has put behind advocating for this cause.  I'm also immensely grateful for the healing power psychedelic therapy had on me. Never forget the power of your own voice, to share your own story as a way to help shift the cultural conversation around psychedelic therapy or any other taboo topic. Also, never forget the power of your vote, to support causes you care about and create change. On this episode we're talking about bringing a higher standard to cannabis production. With the federal legalization of hemp and the continuing state-by-state rollout of recreational cannabis, the industry is just picking up steam in the U.S. A California-based nonprofit started by David Bronner is aiming to lead the way on setting regenerative and socially responsible standards that empower farmers and farm workers in a rapidly expanding agricultural sector. In this episode we're joined by Andrew Black, the executive director of Sun+Earth Certified, a beyond-organic standard for cannabis and hemp, and Josh Gulliver, a regenerative hemp and herb farmer based in Oregon, to talk about the challenges and opportunities on the horizon for cannabis growers. This episode is particularly relevant right now, as three U.S. Senate Democrats have just presented a plan to end the federal prohibition on cannabis. This interview was recorded back in April, so that's not part of the conversation, but what we do talk about is the increasing need for cannabis producers to lead the way on what it means to be truly regenerative. Right now we are at a crossroads. Does cannabis become just another commodity crop or can we use it as a vehicle to transform agriculture? In this episode, we go deep into Sun+Earth Certified standards and what that means for the future of cannabis. Sun+Earth, if you don't already know, is the non-profit started by David Bronner, who is the head of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps as well as an outspoken cannabis activist. The non-profit has set ambitious standards for cannabis production that include earth care, human empowerment and community engagement. Psychedelics Today

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2021 70:21

In this week's Solidarity Fridays episode, Kyle, Joe, and Michelle first discuss an article from Salon.com that illustrates the flaws behind psychedelics being continually hailed as a miracle cure: has everyone just replaced the oft-criticized model of selling a “miracle” pill with selling the narrative that a few psychedelic sessions can cure anything? And inspired by Lenny Gibson, they point out that this rabid focus on medicalization is a direct result of these substances being made illegal in the first place. What would things look like if that had never happened? They then cover the developing drama between Compass Pathways and seemingly anyone compassionate and not making money from Compass Pathways' seedy behavior, represented this week by Tim Ferriss and David Bronner. The latest update includes Compass co-founder Christian Angermayer calling Ferriss' millions in donations a "drop in the ocean" in an odd donations-measuring contest, an email sent to investors saying competitors will never be able to bring a product to market due to the (absurd) patents they've filed (which Angermayer actually defended), and co-founder and CEO George Goldsmith mobilizing opposition to Oregon's Measure 109. This, not surprisingly, leads to a discussion about the competition between corporations, the race for patents, the drug war, how companies overestimate costs of drug-research and potential loss, how so little of the money being made is going to the Indigenous cultures we got all of this knowledge from, and more fun stuff in the endless mire of bullshit we have to wade through as a result of the drug war and greed. Notable Quotes “The only reason why we need to get this medicalized is because we made it illegal and we put it on a scheduling system. So, to make it official and legit and to deschedule it to make it into a medicine, we have to go through FDA-approval. ...What if it was never made illegal to begin with?” -Kyle (inspired by Lenny Gibson) “I really don’t believe in the antibiotic of psychiatry. You really have to actively work on changing the way you think and behave and react and all these things, and it’s a lot of hard work. Mushrooms make it more fun, but it’s a lot of hard work.” -Michelle “We’re not trying to be the enemy, but please be open to critique and understand where we’re coming from. In the same way a white male in America needs to understand American history and Imperialism and the crazy shit we’ve done, medicine should also try to own that a little bit. Like, why don’t certain communities trust you? Why don’t you get the results that the data says you should?” -Joe“This is not just about decrim. This is about restoring our rights as citizens of the world, regaining autonomy over our bodies, [and] improving science.” -Joe Links Salon.com: Why mental health researchers are studying psychedelics all wrong Psychedelicstoday.com: Dimitri Mugianis- Iboga, Psychedelic gas-lighting, and Structural Criticism Drugged: The Science and Culture Behind Psychotropic Drugs, by Richard J. David Bronner & Gero Leson are todays guests on the Podcast. They are the unique trailblazers and (r)evolutionaries behind the ethical and regenerative brand that Dr.Bronner's has become over the last decades. David grew the company from $4 million in 1998 to over $129 million in annual revenue in 2019. From a hister of over 150 years of family soap-making history: Dr. Bronner’s began in the U.S. in 1948; founder Emanuel Bronner’s German-Jewish family began making soap in 1858. Gero who is Vice President of Special Operations at Dr. Bronner’s just published a new book: Honour thy label (March 2021) We talked about: Not just making soap, but trailblazing conscious and regenerative business impacting social, environmental and regenerative well-being: The difference of organic by neglect and expanding the global agriculture into Regenerative Organic Agriculture. Recently launched ROC certification, that Dr. Bronners spearheaded with other ethical brands such as Patagonia. It’s really a standard that mandates what you should be doing in your farm, not just choosing better “than no pesticides” but going deep into Focus on the education of farmers in these communities, to develop practices such as composting, cover cropping, mulching, and other regenerative organic methods that build up soil fertility and organic matter. Gero shared some stories about soil making and management from Canada, to Sri Lanka, Palestine, Ghana, Germany and many other countries on the planet. How Gero & David met through their love and knowledge around Hemp and the diverse soil and crop approach. David shared insights into the Cannabis market, and why Organic Cannabis doesn’t (yet) exist in the legalized US market. Check out his consumer facing standard SUN and EARTH on that note.

Roughly 10 percent of the company's revenue goes to charitable giving and activist causes annually. Organizations that have been supported under Bronner's leadership include the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (for which Bronner serves on the board of directors), and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.A particular target of Bronner's activism has been efforts to protect the hemp industry in the United States. Under his leadership in 2001, the company funded and coordinated with the Hemp Industry Association on its lawsuit against the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), seeking to prevent a ban of hemp food sales in the United States. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay in the case in 2002 and ruled in favor of the hemp industry in 2004.Bronner has been arrested twice for civil disobedience while protesting limitations on the domestic production of hemp. In 2009, he was arrested for planting hemp seeds on the lawn at DEA headquarters. In 2012, he was arrested after harvesting hemp and milling hemp oil while locked in a metal cage in front of the White House. In 2015 he was named Cannabis Activist of the Year by the Seattle Hempfest. In 2014 Bronner wrote an advertorial drawing attention to the ways that GMO crops have led to increased pesticide use in the United States. It was initially published as a short article in the Huffington Post and subsequently as an ad in various wide-circulation magazines, ranging from The New Yorker to Scientific American. Two leading journals, Science and Nature, refused to carry the ad, in at least one case due to concern over backlash from the GMO industry. In 2019, David Bronner pledged his company’s matching contribution of $150,000 to Oregon’s statewide ballot initiative to legalize psilocybin-assisted therapy.drbronner.com Join the newsletter and be part of the East Forest Council Community. Listen to East Forest guided meditations on Spotify & Apple. Check out the East Forest x Ram Dass album on (Spotify & Apple) + East Forest's Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner 5hr album (Spotify & Apple). *****Please rate Ten Laws w/East Forest on iTunes.  It helps us get the guests you want to hear.  Stay in the East Forest flow:Mothership:  http://eastforest.org/IG:  https://www.instagram.com/eastforest/FB:  https://www.facebook.com/EastForestMusic/TW:  https://twitter.com/eastforestmusic

David Bronner is an incredible American corporate executive and activist. As the top executive at Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, David has positioned himself as the “Cosmic Engagement Officer” and is known for his activism around a range of issues, especially fair trade, sustainable agriculture, animal rights, and importantly to us, drug policy reform.Full disclosure: David's company Dr. Bronner’s have a special personal meaning to me and to The New Health Club, since the company generously sponsored the podcast for most of 2020 and will continue to do so in the new year. I met David in February this year for the first time in Germany for our first podcast together and none of us knew at that time that we would experience such an exciting year in psychedelics as the one that we’ve had. Dr. Bronner’s as a company has supported the most important decriminalization movements in the US this year such as DC Measure 81–Decriminalize Nature DC, which passed with 76% of the vote and supports the enforcement of laws against natural plant medicines. You might also remember that the chairwoman of Decrim DC Melissa Lavasani was on our show before the US election! Dr. Bronner’s also supported the Oregon Model, Measure 109 which passed with 56% of the vote and legalises regulated access to psilocybin therapy administered by trained state-licensed facilitators in a therapeutic setting. The model already made a big impact on the worth of stocks from both new psychedelic companies and startups.Dr. Bronner’s also supported Decrim Chicago and the spokesperson Daniel Carcillo, an incredible ex-NHL player, who treated his depression with psilocybin. Of course, we also had Daniel on our show too, a very emotional episode indeed and please check it out if you have not done so already.I am thrilled to have David on the show as our last guest for 2020. We talk the exciting year in psychedelics, why the US (and Europe) are so ready for new mental health drugs, we discuss David's German heritage (the Bronner family is originally from Heilbronn), the next level in the upcoming psychedelic world and we are even joined by David’s dog during our talk.

In today’s Solidarity Fridays episode, Joe and Kyle sit down and dissect 3 recent items in the news. First, they discuss a 2-year study on 18 older long-term AIDS survivors (OLTAS) with a high degree of demoralization and trauma, in which participants underwent 3 hours of individual psychotherapy, one 8 hour psilocybin session, and 12-15 hours of group therapy. While the study predictably showed improvement in demoralization after a 3-month follow-up, the bigger takeaway is the effectiveness of group therapy and the ability to replace hours of individual therapy, (in this case) cutting therapist time almost in half. With many people struggling to connect with facilitators but finding connection in groups, could group therapy work better to help with healing while also cutting costs? This brings up the concept of AI therapy and what improvements we could see by adding technology to this fairly established clinical model, both in cost and effectiveness. They next talk about Decriminalize Nature Oregon groups urging voters to vote "no" on the upcoming Oregon Psilocybin Service Measure 109 due to them finding the measure to be highly restrictive and essentially putting these plant medicines behind a paywall, making it even more difficult for those with race and income-based trauma to gain access. They wonder why DN is so opposed to what they see as progress- why not come at the problem from all angles and embrace legality alongside other initiatives, especially in a time when we are likely to see huge spikes in pandemic-related PTSD? This leads to a discussion of David Bronner of Dr. Bronner pulling funding from DN at a national level (but still supporting local initiatives) and the in-fighting that's seeming to happen everywhere with this battle. And that leads to money and the very common feeling that large donations usually come with ulterior motives. And how do you make sure they don't? Does taking money from someone to further your cause automatically make you a sell out? Or is there only a conflict if you have the contingency of the donor needing some sort of return on investment that affects the end goal? Notable Quotes “Let’s just keep experimenting and understanding what we lose when we get a little bit more technical, and perhaps also what we might gain. What would happen if you had your clients wearing a wearable, so you could review how their week actually was in data terms vs. self-reporting? That would be an interesting adjunct. And what happens when you do a full system thing with apps and the wearable being tied to that, to say, 'Alright, hey, you should go meditate for a little bit, [and] right now, because you are spiking' or 'Go do this bio-feedback thing for 5-10 and re-regulate and then go back to your day'?” -Joe “I think a lot of people that are just starting off, that are looking for some sort of mental health treatment- they’re probably going to want this medical model. Going to a group setting scares the shit out of them. They might not want to go to ayahuasca ceremonies or these spiritually-oriented, self-development groups with people. They might want that one-on-one, individual session, maybe to start off with, until they can build up a little bit of expertise and understand their own inner psyche, where they say, ‘Huh, maybe I can explore different models and different uses of context now.’ But I think that is something that is important to try to explore too- what do the people want that are outside of these inner circles that are more seasoned psychonauts- people that are trying to push for some of these changes and trying to say, ‘Hey, this is the model that we want’? Well, does everyone want that? Is that going to work for everybody?” -Kyle “There’s no real reason to think that laws stay forever. Laws are flexible. Laws are a pain in the butt. Laws are also amazing sometimes. So consider flexibility when thinking about laws and that citizens can change things. Perhaps we don’t get it right [on the] first try, but let’s get it right iteratively. This is the direction of right, in my mind- what OPS [Oregon Psilocybin Society] is doing.” -Joe Links Thelancet.com: Psilocybin-assisted group therapy for demoralized older long-term AIDS survivor men: An open-label safety and feasibility pilot study Decriminalize Nature's facebook post/press release on Oregon Psilocybin Service Measure 109 Ballotpedia.org: More info on Measure 109 Drbronner.com: Clarifying Our Support of the Decriminalize Nature Movement and Challenges With Its National Leadership Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on Facebook or iTunes Share us with your friends Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. So David Bronner’s not your average soap company CEO and today on the show we talk everything from Hemp legalisation to regenerative Ag, from LSD, to Burning Man to soap making - it’s a big interview indeed. David Bronner is Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America and producer of a range of organic body care and food products. He is a grandson of company founder, Emanuel Bronner, and a fifth-generation soapmaker. Under David and his brother Michael’s leadership, the brand has grown from $4 million in 1998 to over $111 million in annual revenue in 2017. David and Michael established Dr. Bronner’s as a sustainable leader in the natural products industry by becoming one of the first body care brands to formulate with hemp seed oil in 1999 and to certify its soaps, lotions, balms, and other personal care products under the USDA National Organic Program in 2003. Both actions resulted in high-profile litigation with government agencies, DEA and USDA respectively, that Dr. Bronner’s ultimately won, cementing Dr. Bronner’s activist orientation in the natural products marketplace. Over the years, David and Dr. Bronner’s have been key leaders in fights for GMO labeling, industrial hemp farming in the U.S., high-bar organic and fair trade standards, cannabis reform, and a fair minimum wage. Today, David is helping to lead the effort to establish the Regenerative Organic Certified standard, dedicating time and resources to creating an integrated, comprehensive program that addresses soil health, animal welfare, and fair labor practices to advance sustainable and ecological alternatives to industrial agriculture. In addition to his support of advocacy for regenerative organic agriculture, David directs Dr. Bronner’s resources to support animal advocacy, wage equality, and drug policy reform. One of his passions is the responsible integration of cannabis and psychedelic medicine into American and global culture and he is a board member of the Multi-Disciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies. His activism embodies the company’s mission — which encompasses a commitment to making socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and to dedicating profits to help make a better world. The CEO (Cosmic Engagement Officer) of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, on how hemp (and psychedelics) can make America great again.I’ve used Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps for years, but never understood just how progressive/impressive the company that turns out products with thousands of tiny words crowding its labels was. I remember the company as a sort of hippie outlier, but today it’s a paragon of a movement known as Constructive Capitalism. This is largely the brainchild of the company’s Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO), David Bronner. So I was pleased when David, 37, agreed to do this podcast from his home in Vista, California. Here are some fun facts to set the stage: David, who has a BA in Biology from Harvard, has grown the company from $4M a year to over $122M in 2018. Under his (and his family’s) stewardship, Dr. Bronner’s has donated $60M to causes related to drug policy reform, animal rights, sustainable agriculture, fair trade practices, and over $5 million to ending cannabis prohibition. In September 2019 the company donated a matching grant of $150K to Oregon’s statewide ballot initiative to legalize psilocybin assisted therapy.Another target of Bronner’s activism has been advocating for the US hemp industry. In 2001, Dr. Bronner’s funded a lawsuit against the DEA to prevent a ban of hemp food sales in the US. In 2009, he was arrested for planting hemp seeds on the lawn of the DEA. In 2012, he was arrested again for harvesting hemp and milling the oil while locked in a metal cage in front of the White House. He clearly understands the need for underscoring donations with dramatic action.Dr. Bronner’s is a leader of the “constructive capitalism” movement. Over half of the company’s 226 employees are people of color and/or women; over 40% of managers are PoCs or women. The starting salaries average $18.71 and hour, 170% higher than California’s average wage and Bronner caps his salary at 5 times that of the lowest earner. Ten percent of the company’s revenue is donated to charitable causes (all of which are listed publicly) and their stated goal is to offset all of their carbon emissions by 2023. Rather than marketing, they invest in the causes they believe in. In other words, it’s perfectly possible for companies to do well and to do good. If that intrigues you, download and share this interview. And please, if you enjoy this Podcast for the Post-Prohibition era and can afford to support us, please visit Patreon to contribute. We rely on the generosity of our listeners and like-minded companies to keep going.

“Love is not something found in a person, place or thing. It’s something that is ever present in our hearts and always available as a gift and it costs nothing to share it.”Ryland EngelhartLast week we explored the world of regenerative farming, soil health and biodiversity as critical levers to improve human health. Consolidate food security. Drawdown carbon. And backpedal climate change.Today we expound on that theme with entrepreneur, restauranteur and social activist Ryland Engelhart.Ryland is the ‘Mission Fulfillment Officer' and co-owner of Café Gratitude and Gracias Madre, a family owned group of legendary plant-based restaurants. The epicenter of California vegan cuisine & culture, it's a platform he uses to not only feed people amazing food but to cultivate community — and most importantly, inspire more gratitude into our lives and culture. In addition, Ryland is a speaker and passionate advocate for sacred commerce, community building and regenerative farming principles, which he supports as co-founder of Kiss The Ground, a non-profit that provides education regarding the connection between soil, human, and planetary health. Among its board of advisors are former podcast guests Paul Hawken, Dr. Zach Bush and David Bronner. If you enjoyed those conversations, or last week's exchange with John & Molly Chester, then you're in for a treat with Ryland. This is a conversation about the importance of soil regeneration and its impact on everything from food security and climate change reversal to improving human health. We open with Ryland’s hippie upbringing. How he learned early the philosophy of using business as a force for good — something he calls sacred commerce. We discuss how doing good — adding value to people’s lives — is not only always the right thing to do, but also the best long-term path to profits. We explore the origins, trajectory and intentionality behind his family's incredible group of restaurants — Cafe Gratitude, Gracias Madre and his sister’s Sage Plant-Based Bistros — which together form the cornerstone of plant-based dining in Los Angeles and beyond. Then we dive into the principles of conscious capitalism, the importance of regenerative farming, and the reasons why soil health is such a crucial component in the holistic equation of sustainable human, animal and planetary health. Finally we discuss his various film projects, including his documentaries May I Be Frank* and Kiss The Ground — a must see you might have heard Woody Harrelson recently raving about on Marc Maron’s podcast. But more than anything, this is a conversation about love, awareness, and the power of gratitude as a living, breathing philosophy of life. You can watch it all go down on YouTube.... In spring 2018 I visited the headquarters of the Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap Company in Vista, California, where the Bronner family carries on the legacy of 5 generations of traditional soapmaking and the quirky and passionate All-One vision of Emmanuel Bronner (Dr. Bronner).  You are probably familiar with their colorful liquid soap bottles covered with words exuberantly enumerating what Dr. Bronner called the Moral ABC's. The Bronner Family still uses their castillian soap product as a platform for world healing.  I met with David Bronner, Emmanuel's grandson, intending to discuss the new Regenerative Organic Certification that they are championing along with Patagonia, The Rodale Institute, and quite a few other companies who are seeking to help create a more harmonious agricultural system.  David also invited Mickey Norris and Chris Conrad to join our factory tour and conversation. David described Chris and Mickey as "the godfather and godmother of cannabis" because of their 30 plus years of pioneering advocacy work towards legalizing cannabis. We ended up discussing much more than just regenerative agriculture, but it all fluently flowed together in the All-One story.  Legalization of psychedelics and cannabis, regenerative grazing and dietary choices, bison, beaver, David's relationship with his granddad, the history of soapmaking...you can't really draw the line between these threads, for it's All One or None!  Exceptions Eternally?  Absolute None!  All One!  All One! ---- You can visit Dr. Bronner's website at . Here's the official website for Regenerative Organic Certification:  . The silly, swaggery instrumental music used in the intro and outro this episode is instrumental clips from a recording of my song Meter Maid Betty from a few years ago at Dave Clark's (Banjo Dave's) house.  Such a pleasure to play with the amazing Ross Plunkett on trumpet and the sweet, sultry sounds of Angelica Pray singing along here and there.  Katie was on the flute, but I forgot her last name. Good times.  I hope to play with you folks again. Here's that full recording:     And again, I want to thank Peia, the angelic Songkeeper who has allowed me to use her song for my Muse Ecology introduction.  She writes beautiful Earth songs that soothe the soul and inspire courage, and she carries songs from old cultures around the world, from times when the village was intact and humans were more connected with the greater ecology around them.  She has been mostly focusing recently on the music of her own Gaelic ancestry.  I highly recommend her music and also performances and workshops if you can make it.  You can see what she's up to at

David Bronner, the Cosmic Engagement Officer of Dr. Bronner’s, wants to save the world. How, one might ask, does he plan on doing that? Simple. A lot of soap and a dash of psychedelics. Since Bronner took the reins of his family’s business in 1998, Dr. Bronner’s has become the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America. The company, which also markets natural toothpaste, lip balm, shaving cream and coconut oil, generated $122 million in sales in 2018, over 30 times its revenue when Bronner took over. Dr. Bronner’s, which was founded as a non-profit, religious organization dedicated to world peace, has used that growth to fuel its advocacy for social and environmental causes. The company has donated tens of millions of dollars into efforts supporting GMO transparency, the integration of cannabis and psychedelic drugs into American medicine, and regenerative organic agriculture. As part of a wide-ranging interview included in this episode, Bronner spoke about his roots with the natural soap company and how his advocacy for hemp contributed to the evolution of the brand. He also explained why he supports the use of  psychedelics within the context of the company’s philanthropic strategy, discussed what makes Dr. Bronner’s concept of corporate responsibility different, and how it is preserving its legacy. Show notes: 3:45: Interview: David Bronner, CEO, Dr. Bronner’s -- In an interview recorded at natural products Expo West 2019, Bronner spoke about the company’s origins in Southern California and how his experience as a Harvard student helped shape his personal belief system. He also discussed how his advocacy for hemp cultivation included being caged in front of the White House and planting hemp seeds on the DEA’s lawn, his work with Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies and why he believes psychedelics are the “last gift of the counterculture that hasn’t been integrated” into the mainstream. Later, he spoke about the company’s work in regenerative organic agriculture and why it’s so important for companies to vet their supply chains. Finally, he discussed why the company has adopted a benefit corporation structure and how it is laying the foundation for the next generation of managers and executives. “We’re systematically destroying the life in soil and bringing our crops to harvest with more and more chemical inputs and treating soil like dead dirt instead of the life-giving resource that it is.“David BronnerEat local. Buy organic. Avoid GMO. Give back. Be of service. These are all great practices. Good for your health. Good for humanity. And good for the planet. But it's not enough. The health and environmental problems we currently face are global epidemics of unprecedented scope and scale. We simply cannot solve these issues with the mindset that created them. What we need, now more than ever, is a revolution of consciousness. There are few people more well suited for this conversation than David Bronner. By far the most unique ‘CEO' I have ever met, this week's guest is the Cosmic Engagement Officer of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America and producer of a range of organic body care and food products. The Dr. Bronner story, which is amazing, begins in 1948 with Emanuel Bronner — a German immigrant, third-generation master soapmaker, master consciousness and generally far out dude — who used his ecological soaps to proselytize his “All One” philosophy, labeling product bottles with the key tenets of his teachings on self-realization and unity across religious and ethnic divides. Embraced by 1960's counterculture for its ecological properties and spiritual sensibility, the brand soon found it's way into most natural foods markets across the United States.David and his brother Michael eventually took stewardship of the family business, shepherding their grandfather's brand from counterculture cult status to mainstream embrace by growing revenues from $4 million in 1998 to over $111 million in 2017.Along the way, David went to great lengths to respect, protect and ultimately deepen Emanuel's vision, cultivating a thriving and truly conscious capitalistic enterprise making socially & environmentally responsible products while successfully pursuing its broader mission to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.Environmental activist. Psychonaut. Visionary. These are but a few of the words that describe David, a man who very much shares his grandfather's ‘cosmic hippie’ DNA but matches it with entrepreneurial flair, a degree from Harvard and the business savvy necessary to grow and sustain an ongoing concern at scale.Under David's stewardship, Dr. Bronner's has championed a number of causes, many of which provide the foundation for today's conversation — a free range exchange that explores David's involvement in advancing animal rights, drug policy reform, GMO regulation, regenerative organic agricultural practices, fair trade projects and practices, medicinal applications for cannabis and psychedelics, as well as wage equality, including self-imposed caps on executive pay.Backing up its mission statement, roughly a third of Dr. Bronner's profits are dedicated to charitable giving and activist causes annually. Furthermore, the company is a founding partner in the Climate Collaborative, which leverages the power of the Natural Products Industry to compel action on climate change. This is David's story. And it's sure to blow your mind.Disclaimer #1: David expounds upon his personal experience with with psychedelics and cannabis in the context of spiritual growth. Episode 10: We’re All One or None! All One! With Dr. Bronner’s CEO David Bronner 150 years and 5 generations of family soapmaking Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third- generation master soapmaker from a German-Jewish soapmaking family. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realize our unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” Still family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner’s honors its founder’s vision by continuing to make socially & environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and by dedicating our profits to help make a better world. All-One! David Bronner is Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America. He is a grandson of company founder, Emanuel Bronner, and a fifth-generation soapmaker. David and his brother Michael established Dr. Bronner’s as a trendsetter in the organic body care industry by becoming one of the first brands to certify its soaps, lotions and balms under the USDA National Organic Program in 2003 — marking the beginning of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps’ issue-oriented activism in the natural products marketplace. David made this possible and meaningful by implementing fair trade all over the earth, family farms, and co-ops. Because of David’s personal mission and efforts, today, Dr. Bronner’s coordinates certified Fair Trade projects for all major ingredients, including olive oil from the West Bank and Israel, coconut oil from Sri Lanka and Kenya, peppermint oil from India and palm oil from Ghana. David pioneered the use of 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) bottles for the liquid soaps, as well as a hemp and recycled paper blend to package the bar soaps. As the main facilitator of the Hemp Industries Association’s (HIA’s) successful multi-year litigation against the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), from 2001-2004, David played a crucial role in US farming of industrial hemp and defending sales of hemp foods and body care in the U.S. David is an active supporter of both the HIA and Vote Hemp. He is also a key leader in the fight to label GMO foods in the U.S. David dedicates time and resources to many different issues on behalf of the company’s mission — which encompasses commitments to making socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and to dedicating profits to help make a better world. Did you know that Dr. Bronner‘s knows how to heal the soil to heal the planet? This is a Company that selflessly truly lives by example! The most technically sophisticated form of agriculture, designed to solve our future food & climate challenge and the most ancient, wise, and timeless way of growing is Regenerative organic agriculture. David made this possible and meaningful by implementing fair trade all over the earth, family farms, and co-ops. He and his Dr Bronners’ family is helping turn the earth around. From a corporate view it was not the cheapest idea but from the helping the earth view, it was incredible. He achieved this with his innate fundamental, environmental and social ideals and applying them to the earth around us and applying them to reality to serve the ideals Dr. Bronner his grandfather put on the label. Join us as the quest to unite spaceship earth continues. So excited to release my next Grey Matters Now podcast Episode 10 with David Bronner. There aren't any slick commercials or campaigns advertising Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. And yet, you've probably heard of the product. The soap is different – some might say a little weird. The most memorable feature isn't the soap itself; it's the labels, which are packed with over 3,000 words about “God’s Spaceship Earth,” Mohammed, Jesus, the Marxist welfare state, arctic timberwolves and more. The quasi-religious rants on the labels were written by the company's founder, Emanuel "Emil" Bronner, an eccentric man who started by selling his liquid peppermint soap to people who would first listen to his soapbox lectures about uniting humanity. When he realized that more people were showing up to buy the soap than listen to what he had to say, he started printing the main tenets of his philosophy right on the labels. In our latest episode of “I Made it in San Diego,” VOSD’s podcast about the region’s businesses and the people behind them, Emil's grandson David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner's, talks about how the family's company has grown from a quirky sideshow soap with a cult following to a multimillion-dollar brand that folks can find at places like Target. David Bronner said the first big boom happened in the '60s, when the rising hippie counterculture embraced the soap, both for its messages of love and unity and for its sustainable, organic ingredients. "My granddad's message just caught fire and became the soap of a generation," he said. Tax problems caused some setbacks – Emil saw Dr. Bronner's as a religious, tax-exempt organization, the IRS did not – but the company, which has its factory in Vista, has continued to grow at a rapid pace. David Bronner attributes the success to putting the company's progressive ethos and messages it champions at the forefront. Issues like fair trade, progressive employment practices and legal marijuana have become central to the business, garnering the company a lot of press. "It's kind of the way my grandpa did it," David Bronner said. "We fight hard for the causes we believe in. And you know we're kind of like cause marketing 101, but way beyond it. People respect that we're not just doing it for the marketing bang, we're actually in our fights to win them." David Bronner, for instance, once locked himself in cage filled with hemp plants in front of the White House in an effort to make the case for the legalization of hemp harvesting in the United States. Hemp is an ingredient in the soap. David Bronner was hesitant about joining the family business, but the activism that's become a big part of his job has made running the company about a lot more than just soap. "It turns out you can write soap into all kinds of interesting, fun, adventurous things," David Bronner said. "And so I'm never bored."

As you may know from reading my article on "", if I can't eat something without it killing me, I don't smear it on my body either. From liquid soaps, to my bar soap, to lip balms to lotions, I've been using as one of my main personal care products sources to follow this simple rule. Unlike most commercial soapmakers, who distill the glycerin out of their soaps to sell separately, Dr. Bronner's retain it in their soaps for its superb moisturizing qualities. They use natural vitamin E from sunflower seeds and citric acid from fermented tapioca to protect freshness. They don't add any chelating agents, dyes, whiteners or synthetic fragrances, and instead use pure and powerful high-quality certified organic essential oils. All their soaps are biodegradable and nature-friendly and their bottles are made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. In today's podcast, I interview David Bronner, the president of Dr. Bronners, and a guy who has been arrested for hemp activism, written a , and who recently championed a , a drive that unfortunately lost by narrow margins, but is now being revived in another form, which you'll learn all about in today's episode, including: -The amazing story of the original Dr. Bronner... -Why there are over 30,000 words on the label of Dr. Bronner's soaps... -What’s in Dr. Bronner’s soap... -Why not all coconut oil is created equal... -Why David Bronner recently penned this ... -What you can do to stop the toxic production of GMO's on our farmed crops... Do you have questions, comments or feedback about Dr. Bronners or about GMO labeling? Leave your thoughts at , be sure to , and visit to help fight GMO crop production, to cast your vote, to donate and to stop the spread of toxic herbicides.

On December 24, 2013, Christina Tobin interviewed David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, a 100% organic & non-GMO company that makes the world's bestselling natural soaps, in addition to other products like coconut oil. David discusses the founding of Bronner's Soaps by his grandfather, Emanuel Bronner, and his story of escaping Nazi Germany. He discusses his grandfather's ultimate protest against the petro-chemical industry, using petroleum-based soaps and products, mixed in with many other harmful chemicals, and the impact it had not only on our bodies but our environment too. Dr. Bronner's Soaps is 100%-plant based. David Bronner has been key in getting the company certified organic, non-GMO, and Fair Trade. He even helped reform some of the many loopholes in the USDA Organic standards. Dr. Bronner's implemented the use of hemp seed oil in many of their products. He discusses his support of the legalization of cannabis and hemp, the importance of Fair Trade practices, the Fair Trade olive oil he gets from both Israel & Palestine, the need to realize the oneness of humanity in the face of a nuclear-armed world, the benefits of psychedelic medicine, his fight for GMO labeling in CA & WA (taking on the Goliath of Monsanto), leading by example using his company as a larger vehicle for good in the world, and the need for more choices in our electoral process so we can restore the free, peaceful, and harmonious society we all want.
