Jan France was born in Chicago, to a mother who was an RN, a father who served in World War II, and a grandfather who served in World War I. She has devoted much of her life to GIVING AND SERVICE. In 1983, she conceived the idea for a wagon train in June 1983, organized, was the executive director, strategic planner, coordinator of a 3-year plan, and fund-raiser of $3 million dollars in sponsorships for the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train, which covered 3,228 miles within the state, planned the route to 150 overnight stops in 150 communities to represent the 150 years since Texas's independence, created the logo, did the marketing, and drove the first wagon herself. Soon she had assistant and wagon masters such as: Walt Garrison, fullback for the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry, head coach for the Dallas Cowboys, Gib Lewis, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives and other with Governor Mark White of Texas riding in the front wagon with Jan, sponsored by: Coca-Cola, Wrangler Jeans, Dairy Queen, Texas National Bank Dallas, Texas National Telephone Association, John Deere, American Honda Motor Co, Southwestern Bell Telephone and others. Later in 2002, in Texas, she taught English to Spanish speaking immigrants at night for free, and founded America's Disaster Relief, which aided various disaster-affected areas across the United States, she kicked into high gear, using her past marketing and organizational skills, bringing into play 5 vans with trailers, 10 drivers, supplies, donations and funds, She was instrumental in relocating 100 families [500 people] into homes completely furnished to victims of Forest Fires, Cedar Rapid, IA floods, Boulder Colorado floods and the locals of Western Colorado. However, in the same year Jan was diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of 70. Despite that diagnosis, she continued to volunteer and fundraise for several years, until last year 2023, deciding to sell the Mobile Kitchen and cancel all events, still volunteering and fundraising remotely. Kevin and Thom today on a poll that indicated overwhelmingly Commanders' fans would prefer Eric Bieniemy to be the team's next head coach rather than Bill Belichick. Thom had his Washington-Giants prediction and they also weighed in on a few of Bieniemy's comments earlier today about Sam Howell. The boys talked about one of the most famous plays in the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry in the wake of Walt Garrison's passing. MLB Playoffs, "You Heard It Here First", and more on the show as well.
The baseball playoffs ARE SCREWED UP! HOW IN THE HELL ALL THREE 100 WINS TEAMS ARE ELIMINATING!!! Get off your butt Manfred and fix this injustice. Steve Smith was 100 percent right when he criticized Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. What a great game between Oregon and Washington, probably the game of the year. Plus the top five in college and the pros. My cousin Paul Davis is amazing on a local sports show. The host and her panel, loves him! Keep up the great work Cuz. We also pay tribute to Walt Garrison and Piper Laurie. Check out this episode and all things GURU TALKIN SPORTS everywhere you find your podcasts. Yesterday's Sports is part of the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/ (Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear). NETWORK SPONSORS https://sportshistorynetwork.com/row1/ (Row One) - the vintage shop for sports history fans! EPISODE SUMMARY 1975 was supposed to be a season of rebuilding for the Cowboys. Veterans Bob Lilly, Cornell Green, Dave Manders, and Walt Garrison had all retired during the off-season. Bob Hayes was traded to the 49ers, John Niland to the Eagles, Craig Morton to the Giants, and Calvin Hill joined the WFL. That's a lot of big shoes to fill. Most of the so-called experts had predicted a long season for the Dallas Cowboys. Most said they would be fortunate to finish with a .500 winning percentage and the playoffs were highly unlikely. But what the experts failed to understand is that the Cowboys don't rebuild; they reload! Narrated by Bill Mercer. It seemed they were forever the bridesmaid. They were continually coming up short in the championship games. That was until 1972 and now you can relive the magic of a group that became known as “America's Team”. In Super Bowl VI, the Cowboys crushed the Dolphins 24-3, in which they rushed for a record 252 yards and their defense limited the Dolphins to a low of 185 yards while not permitting a touchdown for the first time in Super Bowl history. Dallas converted Chuck Howley's recovery of Larry Csonka's first fumble of the season into a 3-0 advantage and led at half time 10-3. After Dallas received the second-half kickoff, Duane Thomas led a 71-yard march in eight plays for a 17-3 margin. Howley intercepted Bob Griese's pass at the 50 and returned it to the Miami 9 early in the fourth period, and three plays later Roger Staubach passed 7 yards to Mike Ditka for the final touchdown. Thomas rushed for 95 yards and Walt Garrison gained 74. Staubach, voted the game's most valuable player, completed 12 of 19 passes for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns.
We start the show with a CDW dibs claim on Cowboys great Walt Garrison and leave no debate that he's a celebrity worthy of the bit. Lastly, we close out with some local economic news.
Former @dallascowboys RB Calvin Hill joins Game Time to discuss what the direction of this team is, the injury woes in 2020, switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense, his relationship with Walt Garrison, his thoughts on Derrick Henry and more.
