Fires, hurricanes, floods—animals are also victims of recent unprecedented natural disasters. Diana Hulet, an environmental writer and animal photojournalist, shares her experience documenting the destruction of the recent LA fires and its impact on animals. She witnessed distressed wildlife, people risking their lives to protect animals, and participated in animal rescues. Diana and Hope discuss the climate crisis and how all these recent “un-natural” disasters are fueled by human actions. Diana also shares her personal contemplative practice, which helps her navigate the difficult subject matter she encounters in her work.Diana Hulet is a Pacific Northwest and Colorado-based environmental writer, animal photojournalist, and yoga teacher with over three decades of experience in yoga philosophy and contemplative traditions. After establishing her own Yoga studio and leading trainings and retreats internationally, Diana pivoted her attention and received a Bachelor of Science degree at Oregon State University in 2017, focusing on environmental ethics, ecology, and climate change. Diana's growing concern for the well-being of animals prompted her to pick up a camera and begin documenting the details of their lives. Her ongoing project, What if We Saw Them,  encourages reflection on our relationship with animals in various contexts, advocating for compassion as a catalyst for systemic change. She is a contributor to two animal photojournalist nonprofits We Animals and Sanctuary Doc, where she also serves as the Board Vice President. Resources:Diana Hulet WebsiteSanctuary Doc What If We Saw Them ProjectSupport this podcast:Hope for the Animals PodcastCompassionate Living

She's worked in over 60 countries in just about every industry one can imagine - including: fur farms, factory farms, bear bile farms, zoos, rodeos, circuses, and marine parks with the mission to make the lives of these invisible animals visible. Her images tell the stories of unseen suffering, the stories of what happens when we stop paying attention, of what hopelessness looks like, and of thousands of little lives that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. She is also co-founder of the Unbound Project and the author of two books, We Animals and Captive. And, she was the subject of Liz Marshall's acclaimed documentary, The Ghosts in Our Machine. I have been a super-fan of Jo-Anne's for years, so it felt like a real honor to be able to spend this time with her. I’ve got good news, better news and bad news, folks. The good news is that yesterday a book launched that will change minds, hearts and lives around the world. The better news is that Jo-Anne McArthur, co-editor of this book, took time out of an incredibly busy schedule this morning to chat with me about it. The bad news is that, because it’s 2020, the recording software I use didn’t record my side of our conversation. Which, for many, may be the best news of all. Let’s start at the beginning. Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene by Jo-Anne McArthur and Keith Wilson, with a Foreword by Joaquin Phoenix, is now available. A short synopsis from the book’s media kit: HIDDEN: Animals in the Anthropocene is an unflinching book of photography documenting our relationship with non-human animals in the 21st Century. It focuses on the invisible animals in our lives: those with whom we have a close relationship and yet fail to see. They are the animals we eat and the animals we wear. They are the animals used in research and for entertainment, as well as the animals we sacrifice in the name of tradition and religion. HIDDEN includes the work of a global community of photographers, 40 of the world’s best animal photojournalists who work globally to investigate, document, and expose animal use.  I spent a few hours flipping through my review copy, experiencing the images and reading the accompanying essays, facts and contextual copy. My review can be broken down to two sentences: Hidden is the heart-wrenching documentation of the unnatural things we’ve done to this planet and its inhabitants. We can only hope that this clear story – one that shows truth without apology or hyperbole – is enough to help us change our ways. Jo-Anne, founder of We Animals, joined me for a conversation about the new book; but as I noted, an error in my recording software kept only Jo-Anne’s part of that conversation. I spent about an hour and a half trying to reverse engineer my questions (I keep notes, not fully written questions) before realizing that there’s ethical implications behind that I’m not comfortable with and it would likely just sound weird. As such, I’m presenting Jo-Anne’s answers, again the important part, with simple subject prompts from me. I apologize to listeners and Jo-Anne for this issue, though I think Jo-Anne’s own interview skills really shine as a result. This episode is brought to you by AnimalStone.com. Start by talking to your doctor, caregiver, or Googling what local resources exist in your municipality or county. Now let’s get started with this week’s episode. Photographs tell stories. Some of them are funny, some sad, some tragic, some a mixture of many emotions. Regardless of what story is being told, photography has a way of getting to people when words have failed. And that’s why We Animals Media matters. Through a variety of storytelling methods – including founder Jo-Anne McArthur’s incredible photography and photojournalism – We Animals Media is a home for a catalogue accessible to traditional media, advocates, and everyone in between. It’s also the site of exciting new projects – like a We Animals masterclass, book sales, mentorships, and really, more than I can say in a short introduction. The building of “We Animals Media” to expand Jo’s capacity to reach larger numbers. Key Takeaways: The camera is a tool for social change. Animals understand when we’re trying to help them. A book gives one’s work historical weight and value. When greeted by the radiant smile and gentle laugh lines around photojournalist JoAnne McArthur’s eyes, it’s difficult to imagine the horrors that those eyes have born witness to in bringing the world images of  ‘the invisibles’. In this episode of MHP Jo chats about what drives her to photograph and document the plight of captive, farmed and abused animals all over the world, her techniques for making those remarkable images-which serve as both a window and a mirror into human behaviour, and the benefits of viewing things from a wide angle. She talks about her upcoming book Captive, coping with PTSD, why women in advocacy should and are be celebrated in her Unbound project, her idea of happiness and why she’ll continue to do what she does until she dies.Jo Anne McArthur is a photojournalist and educator. She travels the globe documenting the use, abuse and issues faced by our non-human kin. We had to make another episode because good things come in threes! I introduced it as "We Animals", but trust me, it is definitely a podcast On Being Animals. This time we recorded at Trish's verdant apartment and we even managed to capture Manfred's heartwarming bark for posterity. We love you Manfred! Between the barks, we discovered all sorts of fantastic things about the Urinating Poison-comb Paperweight. Other notable discoveries: being dead inside, culture, and bicycle safety.   Most egregious error: I called vertebrates "invertebrates". I did it several times and without a conscience. Please forgive me. Also, the title should probably be "Venom" not "Poison", but that's just how it happened.   Science level: Lots of non-science tangents at the start, but don't worry, we get to the animal facts eventually.

Download Episode! It is happening for real! This is the first episode of On Being Animals* and I had the smart as a whip Jovian on to discover more about the Milk-ooze Venom Swimmer. Other notable discoveries: macho fights, super sleep, and tickles. Most egregious error I'm aware of: Echidnas are definitely not birds. Not even close. Also, I may have over-shared a personal story. Science Level: Pretty high!   *at the time of recording, I was calling this "We Animals". I later fount out that someone had written a book by that title and didn't want to step on toes. I think the first 3 or 4 episodes are intro'ed as "We Animals".

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

One year ago a small budget documentary was premiered at the HotDocs film festival in Toronto. The film followed the journey of a photographer – Jo-Anne McArthur – as she explored the exploitation of animals in modern society. In the year that passed, The Ghosts in Our Machine has become a staple in the work of advocates everywhere. With harrowing – yet not gruesome - scenes inside factory farms and fur farms, Ghosts is a powerful yet palatable look into a world many try to ignore.  To celebrate this one year landmark and the release of The Ghosts on DVD and the iTunes Store, Jo-Anne McArthur joined Defender Radio for a candid conversation.

Derek & Lo Vee interview animal rights photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, who is known for her project We Animals in which she documents, through photography, animals in the human environment who are being used for food, clothing, research, experimentation, work, entertainment, slavery and companionship. Her photos give us a view into their world that is often shocking not because she attempts to show horrific scenes of violence, but rather because she shows the day to day existense of the beings we share the world with. The photos are artistic and taken from perspectives that betray our typical human-centric and speciest gaze. The We Animals project has opened up new opportunities for Jo-Anne, and she is currently the subject of a documentary film by Liz Marshall called The Ghosts in Our Machine. "The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research."
