Sherry Shaban shares a powerful personal journey from being a competitive athlete to overcoming a life-changing back injury and a tumultuous relationship with food and fitness. After a car accident at 16 that ended her athletic career, she struggled with identity and health, eventually discovering a holistic approach to wellness that goes beyond traditional diet and exercise methods.Central to Shaban's philosophy is understanding the role of the nervous system in eating behaviors. She explains that our body's "protection mode" (sympathetic nervous system) can trigger survival mechanisms like metabolism slowdown and binge eating in response to trauma, emotional distress, or perceived scarcity. Her approach focuses on healing underlying emotional issues, shifting from a diet culture mindset to intuitive eating, and understanding the deeper motivations behind health and fitness.Key points:Sherry explains that eating behaviors are deeply connected to the autonomic nervous systemTrauma, food scarcity, and emotional distress can trigger a "protection mode" responseWhy it's recommended to address underlying emotional traumas before starting intuitive eatingThe power in understanding one's triggers in healing your relationship with foodThe wisdom of changing motivation from appearance to functional goals in fitness (e.g., aging gracefully, maintaining independence)How to shift from "can't" to "don't" to change identity and habitsLinks DiscussedWhy Your Tight Hip Flexors Might be a Function of Your Nervous System with Elisabeth KristofGraced Health Podcast Season 21 Intuitive Eating Sherry's LinksHit Decks AppFREE download of the Make Peace With Food Workbook at www.makepeacewithfood.comSign up for the free 9-day MasterclassFall in Love with Fitness PodcastConnect with Sherrywww.sherryshaban.comInstagram: @sherryshabanfitnessFacebook: SherrJoin The Stronger Collective Nourished Notes Newsletter Core Essentials: Episode 1 2 3 430+ Non-Gym Ways to Improve Your Health (free download)Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! Charlotte Markey, author of Adultish, joins us to discuss teen body image and well-being, sharing research-based strategies for fostering body gratitude and combating diet culture. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesAs a parent, you want your teen to feel confident, secure, and comfortable in their own skin. However, in today's image-conscious society, this is no easy feat. From advertisements filled with unrealistic standards to the pressures of social media, teens face significant challenges that can negatively impact their body image and overall mental health. Even the most well-meaning parents can inadvertently contribute to their teens' body image issues. The messages we send through our own actions and words can sometimes do more harm than good. Understanding these subtleties is crucial for promoting a healthier self-view in our teenagers.Today, we're diving into the science behind teen body image with Dr. Charlotte Markey, an expert in body image, eating behaviors, and weight management for over 25 years, and author of four books, including the latest, "Adultish: The Body Image Book for Life." Charlotte is here to provide valuable insights into how body image develops during the transition to adulthood and shares practical advice on how parents can guide their teens through this vulnerable period. The Power of Body GratitudeOne of the fundamental strategies Charlotte emphasizes is practicing body gratitude and appreciation. Rather than focusing on our perceived flaws, we should highlight the aspects of our bodies that we like or appreciate. Charlotte discusses the importance of reversing the negative internal narratives that many of us - and our children - have internalized over the years.By fostering a culture at home where positive body talk is normalized, parents can help their teens develop a more affirmative and appreciative relationship with their bodies. She shares simple, research-backed exercises that parents and teens can do together to promote body gratitude, which can have immediate positive effects on body image and general well-being.Battling Diet CultureDiet culture is pervasive and often sends harmful messages about body image and self-worth. Charlotte takes a firm stand against these messages, arguing that most popular dieting methods are not only ineffective but can also be harmful. Instead, she advocates for intuitive eating - a philosophy that encourages individuals to listen to their body's hunger and fullness cues and to eat in a way that feels natural and satisfying. She breaks down ways parents can combat diet culture at home by modeling intuitive eating and creating a positive food environment that doesn't demonize certain foods or glorify others. Charlotte also gives pointers on how to talk to your teens about diet culture critically, helping them recognize and resist its harmful influences.Social Media and Body ImageSocial media can be a double-edged sword. While it offers incredible connectivity, it also exposes teens to continuous comparisons and unrealistic body standards. Charlotte elaborates on research showing the negative impacts of social media on teen body image and mental health, and she offers practical advice for mitigating these effects. She suggests having open, critical discussions about the content teens interact with on social platforms, encouraging them to follow positive and inspiring profiles while unfollowing those that focus on unrealistic beauty standards. Limiting daily social media use can also lead to significant improvements in mental health and reduce anxiety and FOMO (fear of missing out).Fostering Resilient Body ImageParents play a pivotal role in shaping their teens' body image and self-esteem. Charlotte discusses the importance of open communication and creating a home environment where body positivity and self-acceptance are the norms. She shares tips on how parents can better support their teens by offering non-judgmental spaces for discussion and by validating their feelings and experiences. In the Episode...Listening to this episode will equip you with effective strategies for promoting a healthier body image in your teens. You'll learn about:The role of body gratitude in improving self-imageCombating diet culture and promoting intuitive eatingThe impact of social media on teen body imageDeveloping a supportive home environment for positive body imageIdentifying maladaptive appearance investmentsTeaching teens how to support peers struggling with body image issuesThis conversation with Charlotte is an enlightening look into the science behind teen body image and how parents can make a significant positive impact. For today's episode, we're bringing back a fan favorite! One of our most popular episodes from 2022, this episode explores the topic of metabolic health. With a society that's obsessed with diet culture, even “healing” diets like Whole 30, Paleo, and Keto, we often love having easy-to-follow lists that tell us exactly what to eat and not eat in order to be healthy. But this has led to nutrition becoming overly black and white, with people often demonizing certain foods. Unfortunately, this way of thinking can lead to restrictive dieting, food fear, and even malnutrition and worsening health conditions. So how do we nourish and heal our bodies without succumbing to restriction and fear? How can we enjoy food freedom while also fueling our body with the appropriate nutrients that will help us thrive? That's what Jordan explores in this episode with Kori Meloy and Fallon Danae as they discuss what it really looks like to nourish your body, restore your metabolism, and experience food freedom.Tune in to this powerful episode to learn about:Kori and Fallon's own healing journey through endometriosis, Hashimoto's, and restrictive eatingThe importance of nourishing your body to support your metabolismWhat it looks like to fuel your body with biologically available and restorative foodsThe harm of diet culture and following popular dietsHow many calories we really need and why most women aren't getting enoughFor more information, visit rewildculture.com and fallonstable.com.Links from the episode:Westin A. Do you ever feel like diet culture is stealing your joy? Like society's expectations of physical perfection are preventing you from truly aligning with your values and fully experiencing life? How many pictures have you NOT taken, beaches you haven't gone to, social events you missed or trips you didn't take because you let your body hold you back?So many women have been conditioned to stop living life in alignment with what they deeply value in order to pursue weight loss, dieting and acceptance from society. As a result, you run the risk of waking up at the age of 80 years old with a lot of regret about the life half lived, the missed experiences, and the lack of fulfilment. In this episode, we are joined by the incredible Cherie Miller, an eating disorder therapist who works with adult clients struggling with a range of eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, orthorexia, OSFED and disordered eating all along the spectrum.Together, we cover:The persuasive culture that profits off of women's insecuritiesAn important perspective shift to make that will reduce your self-blame and towards an understanding of societal body image issuesHow self-compassion work will help you move towards a healthier relationship with food and your bodyThe Front Porch Test : a thought-provoking exercise designed for creating a better futureBreaking away from black-and-white thinking : how self-acceptance and growth can coexist. How common values like connection, adventure and growth can be disrupted by disordered eatingThe ripple effect of diet culture liberation. If you want to stop feeling like you're missing out on truly living your life because your body is holding you back, you don't want to miss this episode!Connect with CherieWebsite: https://nourishedsoulcenter.com/team/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/foodfreedomtherapist/ LinksFREE 3-PART FOOD FREEDOM VIDEO SERIES starts January 25th Connect with Sabrina: Connect with Sabrina on Instagram @sabrina.magnan.health Get on the Food Freedom Academy Waitlist

He looks up so much to see the structure of a building and the ceiling that even our dog Tato looks up as well. Happy Satiated Saturday! Two decades ago, I was navigating being on and off diets, binge eating, emotionally eating, overexercising, and doing anything I could to run away from my body. My body was the place that was holding on to trauma and food was the answer to feeling regulated and safe. On my journey to healing my relationship with food and body, I explored yoga, multiple different therapeutic modalities, and experimented with various ways to eat to deepen into relationship and understanding of my body. Along the way, I received my Master's Degree in Somatic Psychotherapy and have now been working for over a decade to support others worldwide to find a safe, secure, and satiated relationship with food. A common theme I've found over the years is that almost every single person I've worked with - who was looking to decrease patterns of chronic dieting, binge and emotional eating, eating disorder behaviors, and body image concerns - had some kind of trauma in their past. Let's define trauma as anything that occurred too much, too fast, and there was no one around to help you regulate and know everything was going to be alright. I have seen gaps in the approach to supporting others to heal their relationship with their food and body, which has fueled me to explore what is actually going to guide others into a safe and regulating relationship with food. And this is how over the years Somatic Eating™ was created through all my clinical and educational experiences. In this week's episode, I talk about what Somatic Eating™ is, how it can support you in your relationship with food, what is explored in Somatic Eating™ and a special offer for those interested in joining my Somatic Eating™ Program (for free!) Episode 76. Have you ever thought... Why can't I stop emotional eating? Happy, sad, anxious, bored... eating is my go to! Why can't I just cope with my emotions without food like "normal people"! Or,Why can't I have a little more self-control and break out of the cycle? Well today we are going to answer all of those questions, but also I will address questions you may not know to ask, such as... What does emotional eating have to do with fear of death? How does diet culture influence my beliefs about my health and how does that influence my eating habits and keep the emotional eating cycle (aka the diet-binge cycle) going? What can I do to make sure I'm actually using my time on earth well and not wasting it on ineffective dieting, covering my emotions with food, and/or being too afraid to pursue what I really want? Ready to Break the Emotional Eating Cycle? Ready to stop avoiding and break the emotional eating cycle for good? The first step is to disrupt the cycle. If you want some practical ideas for things today besides the standard diet culture BS advice (take a walk, have some water!) then grab my free practical guide today! Anxiety, Fear of Death, & Diet Culture I'll tell you a story about a client named Trish (not a real name or client, but similar to many clients I've worked with over the years). Trish came to me in distress. She was binge eating most days and had gained around 40 lbs over the past year. Prior to that, she had been on every diet under the sun. Her Weight Watcher group leaders knew her by name. She was referred to me by her doctor who told her that since her father died of a heart attack at age 45, she is at risk. Trish was 34 when she came to see me, and she was scared. She felt scared of having a heart attack, but also really upset and embarrassed to have people see that she gained weight. She worked as a teacher and often tried to dress in dark colors and clothes that would hide her weight gain and she felt uncomfortable in her body every day. Let's Talk Anxiety, Health, and Body Image For next week's episode, I sat down with my friend and colleague Dr. Julia King, a fellow psychologist who specializes in anxiety, body image and disordered eating. We cover a lot in this conversation including: How your anxiety is keeping you stuck in a cycle of body image concerns and disordered eatingThe book that totally changed Dr. King and my life, and how you can feel more empowered than ever with how your spend your timeFirst steps to jump out of the emotional eating cycle and address what's really bothering youAnd much more! This week, I'm going to break down some of the concepts we will discuss next week in greater detail so you will be fully ready to absorb the messages and run with it to create a more empowered relationship to food and your body. What is Anxiety? Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, uneasiness and is created by a perception of threat." - Dr. Julia King, Psychologist and Anxiety Expert There is a cycle that exists between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. For example, we often have: Thoughts and Beliefs about ourselves (e.g., "I'm not good enough at this weight" for example), that impact ourEmotions (e.g., fear, anxiety related to health-related fears and/or fears related to not being accepted socially), and these affect ourBehavior (e.g., avoiding social gatherings, not posting pictures of ourselves or hiding in pictures, emotional eating or going on a restrictive diet) Thought - Feeling- Behavior Cycle for anxiety using a weight-related example Anxiety and Fear Keep Us Stuck Anxiety and fears back in the day when we were running from lions was helpful. You see a lion, run away from it, and hopefully escape to safety. The fear goes away. You are safe. Life is good. Now, anxiety and fears often keep us stuck, immobilized. Not taking action towards a life we deeply desire and instead taking action...
TODAY'S SPONSOR:GOOD IDEA is new favorite blood sugar-stabilizing sparkling water that combines a blend of amino acids, chromium and electrolytes to help reduce the blood sugar responses at meals. I love having one in my car or bringing one with me to events and social gatherings where I can't control the menu or I know I'm going to eat something with carbs.(Much tastier, more portable and socially acceptable than Apple Cider Vinegar!
The future is usually top of mind for people who are trying to change the way they eat. “When I stop overeating/lose the weight/give up sugar…I will ….” can be such an exciting thought. Unfortunately, this focus on the future can often be unrealistic and can lead to putting a lot of perfectionistic pressure on yourself. Some of what you'll hear in this episode:How you can use your future self to shift your relationship with food (and what isn't helpful)The power of thoughtsHow experimenting with your future self can help with night eatingThe future self and cravingsSelf-compassion and tough loveHow your future self can help with perfectionism and overeatingFind links to everything we mention in this episode as well as complete show notes & transcript at https://toomuchonherplate.com/changing-overeating-habits-with-your-future-self-tmohp-episode-039/.
CW: Eating DisordersToday we're exploring disordered eating with special guest, Bria Wannamaker. It seems like we're at a place in society where it's normal and encouraged to do things like: over exercise to change your body shape, restrict food to maintain an ideal weight, and obsess over the way we look in general. And this all of this is causing most of us to have a difficult relationship with our body —which for some, can manifest into disordered eating and, ultimately, an eating disorder.Bria is the perfect guest for this topic. Not only is she a registered psychotherapist, but she is a former personal trainer who candidly talks about her personal experience with an eating disorder. On today's episode, we talk about:Workout hustle cultureThought awareness Balanced relationship with exerciseExplaining ED/disordered eatingThe need for self acceptance*This episode isn't meant to diagnose or replace mental health treatment. Bringing awareness to your situation of stress-eating2. Identifying what your triggers are3. Determining what more aligned alternatives would be4. Figuring out how you could decrease those triggers5. Constantly reflecting, refocusing, and repeating — shifting habits is going to take timeMemorable Quotes:"If you're stress-eating a lot or emotional eating, and don't know how to stop it, don't get frustrated with yourself. This is a habit that you have to look at as an opportunity to grow.""If you're stress-eating because you're trying to cope with something. It's a stress-coping mechanism. And you really need to figure out what that mechanism is serving you and how that is serving you.""Often we will get stressed out, or we will have heightened emotions, or we think that we want these comfort foods that will help us feel better. I hear you. I truly do. Food and eating and qualities and what and when and all the things are challenging, confusing and sometimes contradicting. There are a lot of voices out there. And then, layering on another element is the emotions we have surrounding our food. Sometimes that can lead to guilt and shame, sometimes those can actually bring a smile to our face, and of course there's several layers in between. Today's guest, dietician Sallyanne Pisk is here in the most gentle way to help us navigate those emotions. I just feel my shoulders relaxing when I speak with her and appreciate her tender ways of bringing awareness to emotions associated with eating as well as what to do about that.We discuss:Knowing yourself, knowing what nourishes you, and knowing how to deal with changeEmotional eating and what that fully is (it's not just crying in the pantry eating Oreos)The question to ask yourself as a starting point when eatingThe multiple drivers for eatingThe concept of “it's all my fault” and how it's notHow lack of judgment, curiosity, and being open to self compassion can help your relationship with foodThe power of eating without interactionWhat to do when the thought of giving up the food rules seems scaryThe importance of being curious about why we think about food the way we do Defining what food enjoyment means too muchGet your eating checklist here.Connect with Sallyanne:https://eatingforyou.com.au/Instagram: eatingforyou.auConnect with Amy:GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook!Instagram: @GracedHealthFacebook: @Graced HealthAmy.connell@gracedhealth.comClick here to leave a review…simply!Your Worthy Body: Find Freedom in Health by Breaking All the Rules

Do you know the difference between eating disorders and disordered eating? I didn't but learned that I probably would have been classified under disordered eating several years ago. If you've listened to episode 2 of this podcast, you may recognize some of the symptoms my guest, Brittany Braswell, describes. Brittany is a Registered Dietitian and recovery coach who helps women struggling with disordered eating and negative body image reduce their anxiety and disordered behaviors so that they can confidently restore their health and ditch food rules forever. Brittany emphasizes the importance of replacing negative beliefs with spiritual truth to help her clients discover their God-given identity without their eating disorder. She runs a virtual private practice with one-to-one services and group coaching programs to help women achieve lasting freedom from the bondage of their disorders. This is an important conversation, particularly as it relates to our adolescent children, but I promise you'll receive several nuggets of wisdom that are applicable to anyone. We discuss:Difference between eating disorder and disordered eatingThe importance of not labeling someone based on the diagnosisRed flags that might indicate disordered eating or an eating disorderThe language we use surrounding our food and how it impacts the people around usHow to support a loved one who suffers from an eating disorder or disordered eatingThe benefits of collaboration with other health care providersWhat a “weight-neutral” perspective isLinks mentioned:What four generations can teach us about grief and unexpected loss with Author Heidi PaulecConnect with Brittany:http://www.brittanybraswellrd.comInstagram: @brittanybraswellrdFacebook: Brittany Braswell, MS, RDN, LD (@brittanybraswellrd)Free Facebook community - Eating Disorder Recovery Support for Christian Women (www.facebook.com/groups/christianwomeninrecovery)Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! Dementia is the defining disease of our time. In the UK it’s the leading cause of death, almost a million people suffer with it and 1 in every 14 of the population aged over 65. And it’s growing. The most common type is Alzheimers and the treatment? Well there are none. After decades of research and billions of dollars spent, we have a few drugs that mildly improve symptoms but nothing close to a cure. And so when I came across lifestyle measures including diet, exercise and community based interventions that could reduce the risk of getting dementia by 70, 80 or even 90% I had to get Dr. Dean and Dr. Ayesha Sherzai on the pod to talk about their researchThey are a unique husband and wife team on the cutting edge of brain science, are dedicated to educating people on the simple steps to long-term health and wellness through their work as Directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, with patients, as well as through online writing, videos, and books at teamsherzai.comDr. Dean Sherzai is a behavioral neurologist & neuroscientist whose entire life has been dedicated to behavioral change models at the community and population level. We always try to eliminate certain foods under the guise of “I’m being healthy” “I have to take care of my body”, and not realizing the impact it could have …increase in obsessive & compulsive thoughts, anxiety, inflammation, binge eating, emotional eating and even eating disorders. While Eliminating food groups may work for a bit, for some of us our primal instinct to nourish our body with all food groups takes over, causing us to overeat the food group or foods we have been avoiding. What is more sustainable than eliminating foods/food groups is becoming a competent eater. In this week’s episode we are super excited to have guest expert Dr. Jillian Murphy who is going to introduce us to the theme of competent eating, food freedom and how to trust ourselves with food and find joy in eating. Jillian is a speaker, writer, educator and coach. Jillian’s background includes 10 years of general naturopathic practice along with over 15 years of working with children in various fields, including intuitive eating and body image. She has additional training in CBT and coaching. She helps diverse, smart, health-conscious, people (who are DONE WITH DIETING) get out of their heads and reconnect with their bodies. She uses up-to-date eating psychology, clinical insight & guidance around diet culture, health, and weight to teach individuals WHY they stay stuck in negative patterns with food and feel constant body dissatisfaction and HOW they can make the shift to food peace and body joy.In this episode we discuss:Jillian’s weight and health story What is competent eating Intuitive eating vs Competent EatingThe benefits and impact on our wellbeing The many layers to our relationship with food(How food, exercise and body management become this place where we can put our attention or control when other things in our life are hard)Eating Experience vs Nutrition/Food Science Where does nutrition science come in and how do we take that in, as one of the components of decision making around what we’re eatingThe lacking component(s) in the model of health=nutrition and exerciseThe elements and skills of Competence EatingWhat do we need to let go of to become Competent Eaters/The challenging element to move into trust How can our kids become more competent eaters and where can we do better job with our kidsResources and Links:Jillian Murphy on InstagramJillian Murphy Website Redefining Health with Jillian Ghada B KhalifehReview Living in Alignment on iTunes

She struggled with yo-yo weight loss cycles and the emotional toll that comes with it. When her son was diagnosed with Autism, in her early 30's, she began researching and training in alternative care and treatment strategies. Once she began to feed her family real food, she saw and felt immediate improvements in the well-being of her entire family. She also began to explore the underlying emotional triggers that had led her to struggle with weight and health issues for so many years. She finally shed excess weight that had troubled her for decades when she uncovered and released her subconscious weight loss blockers. It was not about the food, and it was not about lack of self-control. With decades of experience, as well as her training as a certified Emotional Freedom Technique Practitioner, Emotional Weight Loss Coach, and Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Nancy has developed an approach based on “healing” and empowering her clients, allowing them to feel confident and to love themselves. I encourage you to take the information that Mitch shares on this podcast and apply it in your own life to help lead to more sustainable practices and help you, your friends, and your family live a better and healthier life. What We Talk About On This Episode of The Andrew Bilak Show:How Mitch got started with farmingHow dealing with depression led him to purpose and meaning through foodStarting his own farm with his brotherThe role pesticides play in our food and health todayWhat ‘organic' farming really meansLong term ramifications of not going organic when shopping at the grocery storeWhy you should be spending more money on your food and why your health depends on itThe best ways to shop organicWhy building a relationship with an organic farmer is key to the health of your familyWhat to look for to find out if your food is ‘actually organically certified'The ‘dirty dozen' - the foods you need to avoid when shoppingWhat ingredients you need to avoid on your food labelsOil's are so important to the fats your body needs - here are the do's and don'tsEvery health issue starts with the gutWhy you need to start thinking about the story you tell yourself about the food you and your family are eatingThe best questions to ask the farmers at a farmers market to find out if you should be buying your food from themWhat ‘forest bathing' is and why it's been proven to improve your healthVeganism vs. Meat-EatersWhy documentaries about food are doing a poor job of showing how important animals are in our ecosystemUnderstanding Mitch's stance on the purpose animals serve in our livesWhy mass farming is a direct result of people becoming used to paying low prices for meat - needs to be to sustain the marketA lot of the land that we are using is not being used towards human food consumption, but rather energy productionWhat you can do TODAY to help contribute to the sustainability of our planetResources:www.goodfamilyfarms.caInstagram: @goodfamilyfarmsandrewbilak.comSign up for the newsletterDon't forget to subscribe and rate and review The Andrew Bilak Show on apple podcasts :)

We'll be talking about something often considered taboo and shameful, and my prayer is that by opening dialogue, it will remove the stigma and help set you free to pursue healing and hope, if not just for you, for someone you know. This week we talk about how to stop binge eating. What is the relationship between high achievers and binge eating - and while we're at it, what exactly qualifies as a bingeHow do these stats relate on how to stop binge eatingThe real thing that binge eating behaviors are indicators of5 ways how to stop binge eating REVIEW OF THE WEEK: Humbling & Grounding - 5 Stars, by SustainingSara I recently went through a lot of changes in life - a new job and a new city of residence. During that time, I lost a lot of myself and my relationship with God started to lack. I started listening to Trish and not only does she help me find parts of myself to fall in love with again, but also she reminds me to love God and his ever-watching eyes of grace. Thank you, Trish. Most of all, thank you for not being afraid to be honest and real about the struggle in life, especially not being afraid to remind everyone of God's greatness. HIGH ACHIEVER: WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT RELATE ON HOW TO STOP BINGE EATING? Perfectionist, type-A, go-getter, someone striving, wants to be seen, eager to please, on-the-go, focused and disciplined. It's no wonder we fall into binge eating and want to know how to stop binge eating. For me, I wanted to stand out, be exceptional - be worth being loved and seen. I was convince that I was forgettable - but wanted to be remembered and for me, as an athlete, being stand out meant that my body had to be stand out. I was the little girl with ab muscles that popped through her Speedo one-piece when she was 8-years-old; I got a lot of comments on that. If I wasn't her, then who was I? EXCEPRT FROM MY NEWEST BOOK (IN PROGRESS) It started with a comment from a friend. We were ten-years-old at our neighborhood pool. I was wearing my Speedo one-piece and she and her gorgeous twin sister donned skimpy string bikinis that I would never have been allowed to wear. Every boy in Lake of the Woods wanted to date those twins, I was happy to be friends with them to get cool points by association. She didn’t mean to hurt me. But her words stung my heart in a way that burned deeply into my identity for over a decade later. “Your brother is so hot,” she started. “You look nothing like him. Are you sure you have the same parents?” Laughs were had. I waited desperately for the whistle to blow, the lifeguard being my salvation to escape underwater into the pool. I remember diving in, trying to run away from the shame. Everyone wanted to see and be seen with my brother. And, if according to her words, I truly was nothing like him, that meant that I wasn’t worth looking at. I was embarrassed of myself and how I looked. There wasn’t anything I could inherently point to either – my body was athletic, ripped actually for a little girl, and I was well-liked for being a good swimmer. But being liked for what I could do felt very different than being liked for who I was or how I looked. In high school and college, I convinced myself that I was forgettable. Sure, my teammates, classmates, and friends knew who I was, but in general? I felt like I looked so average that I was easily confused with other people. Since no one could see me, there was only one way to stand out: by doing everything in a way that I would be seen. Perhaps you are like me. I believed I had value for what I could do, not necessarily for who I was. I desperately craved to matter, but how could I matter if I couldn’t be seen or if I was merely average and forgettable? ____ Before you ever believe that God sees you,
Regardless of what holiday you celebrate, this time of year is when a lot of us tend to slip off the healthy habits bandwagon. For some of us, we fall off the bandwagon and straight into a big blowout full of puddings and other festive dishes that leave us feeling pretty average, let’s be honest. And to top it off, if we’re in the Northern Hemisphere, we’re probably even less inclined to keep working out and eating well over Christmas and the New Year because it’s absolutely freezing outside. Staying inside and vegging out sounds a whole lot easier right? This time of year is great because we can to reconnect with family and friends that we may not have been able to see all year, but it can be hard to balance enjoying their company, while still maintaining your exercise and eating habits. It’s also hard to explain why you’re not loading up on Christmas cake or casserole like everyone else - especially when you try to tell your friends and family why you’re eating a certain way and they all suddenly turn into expert nutritionists! You know who they are...And having lived in London for a number of years, I know that getting out to go for a run is pretty much impossible (and also not very appealing) if it’s freezing or snowing where you live.Maintaining balance can be difficult and I’m sure a lot of you can resonate with trying to juggle this all while still spending quality time with your family. So that’s why my gift to you all - you’re welcome - is a BONUS episode of The PCOS Nutritionist podcast all about surviving the holiday season. We’ll cover everything when it comes to holiday food, fitness, travelling and how to tackle those awkward “why aren’t you eating that?'' conversations. This episode is for you if:Are feeling overwhelmed about how you’re going to maintain balance over the holiday seasonWorried about what those around you will think of your body or how you’re eatingThe holidays tend to be a big blowout for you when it comes to eating food that doesn’t serve youAre trying to figure out how to fit exercise in over the holiday seasonSome things we cover in this episode:My 3 non-negotiables for the holiday periodHow to maintain balance over Christmas and New YearsMy tips for staying on track while travellingHow to tackle the family Christmas dinner when you can’t eat anythingWhat to say in those difficult conversations about what you are and aren’t eatingListen on iTunes, Spotify or Stitcher
