A 2025 article published in the journal “Oxford Open Climate Change” titled “Solving climate change requires changing our food systems” outlines the need for human societies globally to transition to plant-based food systems and phasing out factory farming, and pathways to make that vision a reality to reach climate mitigation goals and spare the worst warming and deforestation impacts. (the article is open-access and available to share, with a wealth of sources in the bibliography https://academic.oup.com/oocc/article/5/1/kgae024/7942019?l ) "In Tune to Nature" host Carrie Freeman is one of 20 co-authors on that article, talking in this 29-minute podcast with the article's lead author, Dr. Svetlana Feigin, Executive Director of the All Life Institute, recorded in February 2025. Dr. Feigin shares compelling statistics about how the current and growing global demand for inefficient, factory-farmed animal-sourced meat and dairy is wasting land and resources and contributing heavily to greenhouse gas emissions, and how plant-based food sources are a logical climate solution for ecological, ethical, and public health reasons. Example "Although 83% of the world's farmland is occupied by animal agriculture, this provides just 18% of the calories and 37% of the protein humans consume, and the majority of cereals and soy produced today are fed to farm animals [climate change journal article on social media and with community leaders. Tomas Machowicz is a photographer and filmmaker focusing on animal rescue efforts and social issues. He started documenting animal rescue in 2018 after a visit to Seebu Sanctuary in Costa Rica. Along with Molly Condit, Thomas co-founded Sanctuary Doc, a non-profit multimedia project that illuminates the major issues facing our world today by focusing on animals and the people who rescue them. Thomas considers himself a conduit for stories meant to raise the consciousness of humanity and uses photography, film, lectures, and workshops as tools to explore and share the human experience. Thomas' work has been published by BBC News, The Associated Press, Reuters, Vox, and he is a regular contributor to We Animals Media. Thomas shares his experiences at a wild animal sanctuary in Costa Rica and how that experience started his journey to being a photojournalist telling non-human animal's stories. He then tells us about a popular short film produced by Sanctuary Doc called Transfarming that documents animal farming transitions to plant farms and animal sanctuaries in Switzerland. He also talks about another Sanctuary Doc project focused on houseless people and their companion animals. Thomas shared that he feels it's important to create, “a sanctuary in your mind” and discusses mindfulness and the connection to living a fulfilled life. In this episode we speak with Jo-Anne McArthur, acclaimed animal photojournalist and founder and president of We Animals Media, an organization whose photographers document the lives of unseen and ignored animals caught within human systems of exploitation and oppression. HIghlights of this episode include: How, motivated by the power of photography to catalyze social change and to raise awareness about animal exploitation, Jo-Anne created a new genre of photojournalism, namely Animal Photo Journalism (APJ); APJ's mission to capture, memorialize, and expose the experiences of animals who are caught within the complex human-dominated systems and whom we fail to see - animals within the industrial food systems, animals used for entertainment, such as in circuses, zoos, aquaria, theme parks, and rodeos, and animals used in research; Jo-Anne's travels to over 60 countries that catalogue our complex relationship with animals, captured in her three books, We Animals, Captive, and Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene, and her feature role in the acclaimed Canadian documentary, The Ghosts in Our Machines; inspiring stories of animal advocacy and highlights of the work of women on the front lines, captured in the Unbound project by We Animals Media; how Jo-Anne manages the emotional impact of documenting animal suffering while staying committed to animal liberation; and finally, on behalf of our planet which is groaning under the pressure of human dominion, Jo-Anne's reflection on her personal journey of choosing not to have children, emphasizing the importance of considering alternative and richer ways to express love and fulfillment. We discuss findings from a 2023 report “Animal Agriculture is the Missing Piece in Climate Change Media Coverage”. Given the policy agenda-setting role of the news media, this report details what coverage improvements are warranted to facilitate needed farming and dietary changes in the U.S. to help mitigate the climate crisis, given the large role that animal ag plays in greenhouse gas emissions (especially via methane and deforestation). In this 25-minute podcast, In Tune to Nature host Carrie Freeman interviews two of the report's co-authors, Coni Arevalo (Research Associate at Faunalytics) and Jenny Splitter (Managing Editor at Sentient Media). Two fur farms in Quebec are at the centre of a complaint filed by Animal Justice after they received images from We Animals Media. The photos, captured in August 2022, show deplorable conditions for mink and foxes. The Montreal SPCA has initiated a call for a ban on fur farming in Quebec and are setting up inherently inhumane fur farms as an election issue in the province. Camille Labchuk, executive director of animal law non-profit Animal Justice joined Defender Radio to discuss the situation in Quebec, what the images revealed, how various organizations are pushing for change, and what individuals can do to make a difference. Vegan Marketing Success Stories is taking the vegan business world by storm. A first of its kind, Vegan Marketing Success Stories highlights the marketing tactics of many of today's most successful vegan businesses. With 47 contributors and dozens of other vegan companies mentioned as examples, the non-fiction book shares how on- and off-line tactics contribute to a cohesive strategy and topical issues that few marketing books are talking about: the importance of diversity and inclusion, what vegan businesses did to weather the pandemic, and how some have transitioned to becoming vegan. “In 2021, I researched whether there was a book about marketing for the vegan industry. When I discovered one didn't exist, I knew I had to publish it,” says Nomoto, a vegan content writer and editor since 2020 who operates as The Content Doctor. She continues: “This book would not have been possible without the stories of the 47 contributors and other vegan companies around the world.” Contributors include executives of Benji Vegan Gourmet, Blue Tribe, Goddess Garden, Immaculate Vegan, Remeant, Vegan Business Tribe, Vegans, Baby, Vegan Supply, and We Animals Media. Other companies and individuals featured in Vegan Marketing Success Stories include Alpha Foods, Alpro, Atlas Monroe, Bad Manners, Heather Landex, Kathleen Gage of Vegan Visibility, Mid-Day Squares, NutritionFacts.org, Switch4Good, The Body Shop, THIS, and VFC. Gordon Meade Gordon Meade is a Scottish poet and animal advocate. His 10th book of poetry is called Zoo Speak. It's about the inhumane and appalling conditions for animal who live in zoos and other terrible places. He wrote it to accompany the photographs in Jo-Anne McArthur's, Captive a haunting book of photographs featuring animals in captivity. If you are unfamiliar with Jo-Anne's work, go to We Animals Media and take a look. It will change you. I read/looked at Captive years ago and I truly did not think it could get more powerful or feel more devastating then it felt right then, and then I came across Gordon's poetry. It offers an entirely new dimension to the photos, one that makes you look at the animals and really see and feel their perspective on the situation. It floored me. Species Unite will be back next week, June 2nd, with a brand new season. Until then, we are re-sharing some of our favorite episodes. Today's is a conversation with Jo-Anne McArthur. Jo-Anne McArthur is an award winning photojournalist and the founder of We Animals Media. For 20 years she has been photographing and bearing witness to our complex relationship with animals. She's worked in over 60 countries in just about every industry one can imagine - including: fur farms, factory farms, bear bile farms, zoos, rodeos, circuses, and marine parks with the mission to make the lives of these invisible animals visible. Her images tell the stories of unseen suffering, the stories of what happens when we stop paying attention, of what hopelessness looks like, and of thousands of little lives that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. She is also co-founder of the Unbound Project and the author of two books, We Animals and Captive. And, she was the subject of Liz Marshall's acclaimed documentary, The Ghosts in Our Machine. I have been a super-fan of Jo-Anne's for years, so it felt like a real honor to be able to spend this time with her. I learned a lot in this conversation, about suffering, about empathy, and mostly, about grace. I hope that you will be as moved by Jo-Anne and her work as I am. #081: Jo-Anne McArthur is the winner of this year's BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition with her beautiful image of a mother kangaroo with a joey in her pocket standing in the midst of a burned eucalyptus plantation. It's something that when you look at it, you can't help but start to put together a puzzle pieces of how we as humans impact the natural environment and how we impact the species that live on this planet alongside us.But… often we think of only the wild animals we effect, such as that kangaroo family. Jo-Anne, however, brings attention to all animals. Jo-Anne McArthur opens the door to a much larger conversation about everything photographers can to advance animal rights. Her agency, We Animals Media, works with collaborators and partner photographers and creates imagery that opens eyes to the cruelty that we as humans inflict on other species.Inside of this conversation, we talk about:how Jo-Anne documents such traumatic situationshow she works with other photographerswhat clients use this imagery on a global basiscoping mechanisms and traumahope and optimism and laws and more There's a lot inside of this episode that you can take and utilize in your own practice as a conservation visual storyteller. You will walk away with tools that will help you in that journey. Animals are not things. They are living, breathing, thinking, feeling beings. That's why In Defense of Animals and Animals & Media are calling for an update to the Associated Press Stylebook's recommendation on the use of personal pronouns for nonhuman animals. They are joined by more than 80 respected leaders and scholars in animal advocacy and conservation who support this change, including renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, biologists Dr. Marc Bekoff and Dr. Jonathan Balcombe, and leaders of organizations such as Center for Biological Diversity, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Mercy For Animals, Encompass, Animals & Society Institute, Animal Outlook, Nonhuman Rights Project, Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School, JaneUnChained News and other media organizations, such as Sentient Media, We Animals Media, the Journal of Critical Animal Studies and Animal Sentience journal. The scientific consensus is that nonhuman animals are conscious beings — someone not something — and the language we use should reflect that. Here to talk about it with JaneUnChained.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell is IDA' s Alicia Graef.

Jo-Anne's striking images of animals in captivity are known to all within the animal rights movement, and have moved thousands of people to deeply consider humanity's relationship with animals. In this episode Jo-Anne shares her journey into veganism and animal rights, what she has learned in twenty years of photographing animals exploited by humans and whether or not she still remains optimistic about humanity. Also in this episode… Jo-Anne describes how one chance encounter with a macaque monkey, while backpacking in Ecuador, inspired her to share the stories of animals. Jo-Anne tells us about her latest book Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene. Jo-Anne explains why she refers to the animals used by humans as ‘hidden animals' and why she has devoted her life to telling their stories. ‘We have to create artistic, beautiful images, even of things that are absolutely terrible'. Jo-Anne stresses the importance of producing visually stimulating pictures of animals and likens it to war photography. Tylor shares that, in his time at PETA, they often used Jo-Anne's work in their campaigns. Jo-Anne talks about her organisation We Animals Media; a group of writers, filmmakers and artists, whose focus is to amplify the stories of animals. ‘Anyone doing this front-line animal work needs to have a big focus on resilience'. Jo-Anne discusses the importance of safeguarding her mental health and shares that she has previously suffered from PTSD. ‘I don't think I have become desensitized. I think it is important to keep my heart wide open and just let it break, over and over'. Jo-Anne explains how emotional engagement with her subjects and remaining highly sensitised to the plight of animals is key to her being able to produce such striking images. Jo-Anne tells Evy and Tylor about the creation of her Animal Photojournalism Masterclass and very generously offers us 4 free passes to giveaway to you, our dearest ChickPeeps.
