OA 1076: In the wake of the devastation left by hurricanes Helene and Milton, we examine the state of FEMA's Congressional funding. Has disaster relief actually become a “partisan” issue, or is this really just a Republican thing? How are these funds distributed, and why can't Congress ever seem to fully fund anything? Matt explains why the current state of Congressional appropriations has him looking for flights to Denmark. Then: Why is Ron DeSantis's Department of Health threatening to bring criminal charges against local TV stations airing pro-choice ads in support of Florida's proposed Amendment 4? Finally, we drop a footnote to check in on the current state of the longest-running criminal trial in Georgia history and listen in on what the judge most recently assigned to the Young Thug RICO case has had to say to Fani Willis's office about how they are handling it. “Disaster Relief Fund State of Play: In Brief,” Congressional Research Service (8/14/2024) “The Congressional Appropriations Process: An Introduction,” Congressional Research Service (11/30/2016) Letter sent by Florida Department of Health General Counsel John Wilson to WFLA-TV dated 10/3/2024 Get 15% off OneSkin with the code OPENING at https://www.oneskin.co/ #oneskinpod If you'd like to support the show (and lose the ads!), please pledge at patreon.com/law!

After breaking up with his partner, a 24-year-old man allegedly severed the spine of her infant, causing the child to die. On May 3, deputies with the Marion County Sheriff's Office were made aware of a child who had been taken to the hospital in severe condition. Despite efforts to save her, the young girl reportedly died of her wounds. The child's spine was found to be entirely severed during the investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office, indicating that she had been the victim of serious physical abuse. WFLA-TV states that the suspect is the mother's ex-boyfriend Travis Thompson. The alleged abuse occurred when Thompson had custody of the child. Sheriff's officials say Thompson first told them he and the victim were in different rooms when he heard a loud boom. As far as Thompson is aware, the young lady was unresponsive. After waiting for the child's mother to return, Thompson reportedly drove the kid to the hospital. While deputies were on their way, the victim's mother allegedly insisted that Thompson dial 911 after discovering her toddler was unresponsive. WFLA reports that the mother broke up with Thompson, causing him distress, a week before her toddler died. The Sheriff's Office said on September 1 that the Medical Examiner's Office determined the toddler died from catastrophic injuries to the torso, including "severing of her spine and internal bleeding behind her organs," about four months after her death. It was found that Thompson applied significant, gradual force to the victim's upper and lower body from the front, with the fulcrum point on her lower back, the Sheriff's Office said. According to the Marion County Jail register, Thompson was apprehended on September 8 and booked that day. He has been imprisoned without bond since the murder and aggravated child abuse charges were filed against him. On October 11, 2018, Thompson will make an appearance in court. Thompson is allegedly also on probation for violating a protective order against child abuse. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts!
