A major acquisition involving two TV companies could have a major impact on news and viewing patterns in the Tampa Bay area. Nexstar, owner of News Channel 8, is buying Tegna, owner of 10 Tampa Bay, for more than six billion dollars. This would put the local NBC and CBS affiliates under the same ownership. Tampa is one of a handful of markets where both Nexstar and Tegna own stations. We speak about the implications of the deal with USF political communications associate professor Josh Scacco, PhD. (Newsradio WFLA and iHeartRadio Tampa Bay have a news and weather partnership with News Channel 8.)
The provided text is a personal reflection on the author's experiences listening to two influential radio talk show hosts: Neil Rogers and Bob Lassiter. The author describes being captivated by Rogers in the early 1980s in Miami, and later, by Lassiter, who moved through several stations including WPLP and WFLA. The piece highlights Lassiter's eventual retirement from radio and his subsequent blogging activity, which documented his later life and passing. It also notes a brief moment where Lassiter appeared on Rogers' show near the end of his life, allowing fans to hear from him one last time. The author concludes by expressing his belief that both men were the greatest talk show hosts he had ever heard.

According to the Justice Department, a Florida doctor is facing several charges for sexually abusing kids he met on social internet and telling them to "cut, choke, and hang themselves" while he watched on video chat. Stephen Leedy, 59, of St. Petersburg, is suspected of leading at least one of his young victims to her demise. The 13-year-old victim was discovered "hanging from the shower head with a dog leash around her neck." On December 26, an indictment outlining the allegations against him was handed down. The charges included two counts of coercing or persuading a minor to engage in sexual behavior and three counts of producing material pertaining to child sexual abuse. Leedy faces a possible sentence of life in prison if found guilty. In a press release, DOJ officials said, “According to the indictment and court documents, Leedy, a palliative care doctor in the Tampa Bay area, utilized the username ‘maximumuncle#9112' to sexually exploit and victimize approximately ten minors online. In online conversations and video chats, Leedy instructed the minors to produce sexually explicit images of themselves and directed them to cut, choke, and hang themselves. In November 2021, Minor Victim 1 was discovered deceased, having hanged herself in front of her phone in a manner consistent with instructions Leedy had previously provided her.” Prosecutors described the alarming charges against Leedy in a pretrial application for detention filed on December 17. They claimed that he posed "an extreme danger to minors in society and his release from custody would be in direct conflict with maintaining community safety." They explained how the evidence against him "is extremely strong" and demonstrated his purported preoccupation with abusing children sexually and causing them harm. Prosecutors stated, “Through social media conversations and investigative means, law enforcement confirmed Leedy's ownership over the account used to encourage minors to engage in sadistic and sexual behavior. Minor victims have been interviewed, identified themselves within conversations, and confirmed the horrific acts Leedy instructed them to do. Leedy very clearly engaged in this predatory behavior with approximately ten minor victims across the country.” Prosecutors claim that Leedy used video chats and messages to coach a number of females, giving them instructions on how to injure themselves sexually and with household objects. A 13-year-old girl was told to "cut her breasts with a blade" and then strangle herself. According to the prosecution, another was instructed to carry out "daily hangings." “Can ur life be full with cutting your boobs and tmmy for daddy, not eating and puking for daddy,” Leedy allegedly wrote in a message to the 13-year-old. “Go get the belt so we can start choking u,” he allegedly said, before asking: “Have u ever put the end of the belt over the top of your door, and then close the door?” Although Leedy was detained in October by investigators from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office and FBI Tampa Office, with help from the St. Petersburg Police Department, FBI Atlanta Office, and the Holly Springs Police Department, he wasn't formally charged until last week. In their motion for detention, prosecutors stated, “The nature and circumstances of the offenses charged are extremely serious. Leedy directed the three minor victims named in the indictment, along with approximately seven additional minor victims, to produce child pornography while on video calls with him to satisfy his own sexual deviant interest in children. The conversations continually revolved around his control over the minor victim, commenting on how ‘obedient' they are and asking at least one minor victim to refer to him as ‘my Lord.'” He has been practicing medicine in the state since January 1991, according to records from the Florida Department of Health, and he specializes in hospice and palliative care, according to local NBC affiliate WFLA. The accused victims had no idea who he was or what his occupation was. “He hid behind the cloak of anonymity by either lying about his identity or using a black screen while engaging in video calls with the minor victims. Everything that Leedy instructed these minor victims to do was either physically or mentally detrimental to the minor victims. He had absolutely no disregard for their safety and took advantage of children more than half his age to gratify himself,” prosecutors said. His lawyers stated that their client plans to plead not guilty. “Our client, Stephen Leedy, adamantly denies the charges that have been filed against him in federal court,” attorneys Bjorn Brunvand and Lucas Fleming told the outlet. “It is particularly important in moments like this when someone is being accused of very troubling allegations, that we afford him the presumption of innocence,” they added. “We will be entering a not guilty plea at the earliest opportunity and look forward to vigorously defending Dr. Leedy in court.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? DeSantis Administration Threatens News Station With Criminal Charges for Airing Abortion Amendment AdTruthout, By Chris Walker, on October 9, 2024https://truthout.org/articles/desantis-administration-threatens-news-station-for-airing-abortion-amendment-ad/The state government of Florida is attempting to suppress a news station, WFLA, by threatening to criminalize them for airing a pro-Amendment 4 ad that advocates for extending abortion rights up to 20-26 weeks. This intimidation comes as Governor DeSantis strongly supports a six-week abortion ban currently in place. A letter from the Florida Department of Health's general counsel seeks to bully the station into pulling the ad, revealing an attempt to silence the press and undermine free speech. The discussion highlights the vagueness of Florida's abortion laws, which potentially obstruct necessary medical procedures even in life-threatening situations. Across the U.S., pregnant individuals facing complicated pregnancies are often denied care due to ambiguous abortion laws. The debate centers around Amendment 4, which aims to reinstate broader abortion access, a position supported by a majority of Floridians. However, the amendment requires a 60% supermajority in the upcoming referendum, raising questions about the state's electoral processes and why such a high threshold is necessary.Amendment 4, if passed, would protect abortion rights up to fetal viability (22-25 weeks), directly challenging Florida's restrictive six-week ban. It would also clarify legal uncertainties for healthcare providers, reducing the fear of legal repercussions in providing necessary medical care. The amendment is seen as crucial for women's health and reproductive rights, addressing real-life consequences seen in other red states. Although supported by many, the amendment is likely to face legal challenges from anti-abortion groups and could influence abortion legislation nationwide.Beyond the abortion debate, the segment emphasizes a broader issue of government overreach into press freedom. The Florida government's attempt to prevent an ad supporting a lawful amendment exposes a dangerous authoritarian trend, wherein the state tries to dictate what the media can or cannot air. This goes beyond abortion—it challenges democracy itself, with the government stepping into an election process to stifle public discourse. The hosts express outrage over the nerve of this suppression, likening it to dictatorship behavior. The hosts conclude that this is fundamentally a democracy issue, with Florida's government stepping into territory that violates both freedom of the press and free speech, as protected by the First Amendment. The debate also touches on the global differences in political campaigning, noting that such interference would not be seen in European democracies. Ultimately, they argue that the Florida government's actions are an affront to democratic principles, setting a dangerous precedent for future government interference in the media. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.42.4 featuring Kelley Laughlin, Jonathan Roudabush, Cindy Plaza and Cynthia McDonaldBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Texas is entering its third week of a record-breaking heat wave where the heat index could top 120 degrees. And the sweltering weather is not limited to Texas. At least 45 million Americans across the southern U.S. were under heat advisories over the weekend and into Monday. Geoff Bennett discussed more with climate specialist and WFLA chief meteorologist Jeff Berardelli. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
The record-shattering ocean surface temperatures across the Atlantic over the last two weeks have shocked anyone paying attention to the climate crisis. Ocean surface temperatures are more than a degree Fahrenheit above previous records, and climate scientists hadn't expected this level of warming for decades, even in the worst case scenario models. But is there more to the story than human-caused climate change? Are there other factors contributing to this spike in ocean temperatures? How likely is it that the ocean has surpassed a tipping point that could spell disaster for marine life and all of the lifeforms that depend on a healthy marine ecosystem, including humans. Jeff Berardelli, WFLA's Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist joins The Climate Pod to answer these questions and explain global warming's impact on the warming oceans and the other causes of the extreme temperatures we're seeing. We also discuss El Nino's potential impact on 2023's extreme weather, the Texas heatwave, the early season hurricane forming in the Atlantic Ocean, and a little history behind Dr. Ed Hawkins' Climate Stripes as we celebrate International #ShowYourStripes Day. And Ty and Brock celebrate the 4 Year Anniversary of The Climate Pod and express their gratitude for the incredible guests that have appeared on the show.
