Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 28, 2022 is: wheedle WEE-dul verb Wheedle means "to use soft words or flattery," usually for the purpose of persuading someone to do something or to give you something. It is often used disapprovingly, and is frequently followed by the word into, as in "wheedle one's way into favor." // The sales clerk tried to wheedle us into spending more money than we wanted. // We managed to wheedle the juicy details about her date out of her. See the entry > Examples: "In the book [Françoise Gilot] recalls a moment when Claude, a small boy, pleaded to be allowed into her studio. Loitering just outside her door, he wheedled, 'I love you, Mama.' No luck. He liked her painting, he told her, adding after a time, 'It's better than Papa's.' At that, she weakened and welcomed him inside." — Ruth La Ferla, The New York Times, 19 Jan. 2022 Did you know? Wheedle has been a part of the English lexicon since the mid-17th century, though no one is quite sure how it wheedled its way in. (It has been suggested that the term may have come from the Old English word wǽdlian, which meant "to beg," but this is far from certain.) Be careful not to confuse wheedle with the similar-sounding weasel. While both words are applied in situations in which someone is trying to persuade another person, weasel is especially apt in cases in which the persuader is being clever or dishonest in their efforts, while wheedle always specifically involves soft words and flattery.

Seattle had a thriving funk and soul scene in the 60s and 70s. There were dozens of bands and more than 20 venues specializing in the genres. For today's episode, Emily Fox talks with KEXP DJ Supreme La Rock about how he first discovered Seattle's funk and soul scene while digging for records. His discoveries later turned into a compilation called 'Wheedle's Groove,' released by Light in the Attic Records in 2004. We also hear about the scene from drummer Robbie Hill of the Seattle funk bands Black on White Affair and Robbie Hill's Family Affair, and why he turned down an opportunity to be signed to RCA records. Greg and Rocket co-host via Skype from Tucson, Arizona. Rocket shares his adventures from the road and what it feels like to be racing again for the first time in almost a year. Greg and Rocket share their thoughts on the various comments that create a formula for success in areas beyond cycling. Also, Rocket and Greg share their thoughts on Professional Cycling's governing body, UCI and their decision to ban the "Super Tuck" (a technique to cyclists use to get as low and aero dynamic on descents, to maximize speed). In Celebration of Black History Month... In the second half of the episode Rocket and Greg speak with Reginald "Doc" Wilson who heads up "Peace Peloton." "Doc" talks about how he came up with the concept, which transcends cycling and shines the spotlight on black owned businesses and economic empowerment. From Bicycling Magazine: https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a33647972/peace-peloton-seattle-group-rides/ "Wilson emphasized that Peace Peloton isn’t strictly a protest ride. It serves a different goal: direct economic reform for Black people and Black-owned businesses. Every Peace Peloton ride starts at a Black-owned business (often a coffeeshop or other restaurant) where attendees can fuel up. The no-drop ride—typically around two hours at a very easy pace—then visits historically Black neighborhoods and landmarks around Seattle, like the Northwest African American Museum, and more Black-owned businesses, before finishing back at or near the start. For those interested in joining an upcoming ride, check the Peace Peloton website: www.peacepeloton.com for the next date and route." Featured music on this episode is from the Wheedle's Groove Track Listing: 1. "This is Me" - Cookin' Bag 2. "Nothing in Common" - Broham 3."I Just Want To Be (Like Myself)" - Robbie Hill's Family Affair 4. "Hey Jude" - Overton Berry lightintheattic.net/artists/174-wheedle-s-groove
Wheedle is a verb that means to coax through flattery. The German word wedeln (VEE den) means ‘wag the tail’ which is often a euphemism of ‘flatter.’ After entering English in the 17th century, our word of the day has come tom means ‘to persuade or coax with flattery.’ It was easy to wheedle other members of the board into scheduling more parties. All I had to do was convince them how much I would enjoy the company of such effervescent personalities on a regular basis. You’d be surprised how far you can get with a little flattery.
