Around campfires North and South, many of the tunes played and sung during the Civil War were the work of a 35-year-old Pennsylvanian who was America's first full-time professional songwriter.By the time the war started, Stephen Collins Foster — who as a youth taught himself to play the clarinet, guitar, flute and the piano — had published more than 200 songs. His best ones — “Oh Susannah,” “Camptown Races,” “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” “Hard Times Comes Again No More” — already were widely known throughout the country to amateur and professional musicians alike.About “Angelina Baker”This song, though, was not one of the famous ones. Foster wrote “Angelina Baker,” sometimes performed as “Angeline the Baker,” in 1850 for use by the theater world's Christy Minstrels troupe.Today folks know it primarily as an instrumental dance tunes performed by old-time and bluegrass bands, almost always with a lively fiddle leading the way. An early version was recorded for Victor in 1928 by Uncle Eck Dunford of Galax, Va. Meanwhile, West Virginia fiddler Franklin George called it "Angeline" and played it with Scottish overtones.Foster's original, though, was a bit slower and had lyrics that lamented the loss of a woman slave, sent away by her owner.Huntington-born music historian Ken Emerson — who in 1997 wrote a definitive biography called Doo-Dah!: Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture — said that “Angelina Baker” entered the American consciousness during a period of great controversy between free and slave states. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was among the hotly debated topics at the time of the song's composition, and, Emerson noted, Foster's lyrics obliquely acknowledge these controversies. (Angelina likes th' boys as far as she can see ‘em / She used to run old Massa round to ask him for to free ‘em…. Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker's gone / She left me here to weep a tear and beat on de old jawbone… )Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has always celebrated diversity. The guys often follow a folk blues with a swing tune or chase a 1950s jazz standard with some 1920s jug band stuff. And deep in The Flood's DNA are the fiddle tunes learned from Joe Dobbs and Doug Chaffin. This Civil War-era tune the band learned from fiddlin' Jack Nuckols, their newest band mate. From the Archives: How We Met AngelinaAs reported earlier, Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen started 50 years ago trying to draw Nuckols into the band. On an April evening back in 1974, Peyton and Bowen trekked over to Jack and Susie's place in South Point, Ohio, for a jam session. It was during that session that they first heard “Angelina Baker.” Here from the fathomless Flood files is that specific archival moment. Click the button below to travel back 51 years and hear Jack on fiddle, Dave on Autoharp and Charlie on guitar:More Instrumentals? Finally, if all this has you wanting some more wordlessness in your Friday Floodery, tune in the Instrumentals channel in the free Radio Floodango music streaming service. There you'll have a randomized playlist of everything from folksy fiddle tunes to sultry jazz numbers without a lyric or vocal in sight! Click here to give a try. This is a public episode. Hey Slaycaters, we're back with another crazy case that you just have to hear to believe. It takes place in Suwannee, Florida — an interesting part of South Florida — right near the famous Suwannee River (from the famous Old Folks at Home song that also happens to be Florida's State song despite the original version being completely racist) But we digress… This case involves the Rainey Family: Dad David Rainey, his wife Cindy and their two 20-something year old sons. Joining them on this Dixieland vacation was one of the son's girlfriends, as well as a family friend and Cindy's Boss from her job as a realtor. Everything was going fine — until David went missing. What happens next will have you asking all kinds of questions — many starting with WTF??? But isn't that always the way on Slaycation? Enjoy and stay safe out there! My grandmother, who was born in 1905, lived at home until the end of her life at 95, but she was always afraid her children would send her to an old folks home, as she called it. Nowadays, things have changed so much we might even need a new vocabulary to discuss communities for older people. But whatever we call them, they're offering a more attractive environment for people to live later in life, with individual homes, nice amenities, and lots of fitness and recreation activities. What's it like at one of these communities? Do they seem appealing to you? Well, that's what we're looking at today on Optimal Aging, the show about fitness, health and wellbeing for people over 50. Each week we explore what healthy living means for millions of people in this lucrative yet underserved market, with a focus on communications, content and making powerful connections. It's a Double Dose of Dismal Disney! We have TWO stories for you about older folks getting into brawls at Walt Disney World. First up, a couple from Alabama assaulted a woman waiting for the midday parade on Main Street. Then a pair of sixty-year-old sisters BITE each other while celebrating their dad's 96th birthday. What a magical day! ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com Additional Context: The frequency of fistfights and altercations at Disney properties, particularly at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, has become a noticeable issue in recent years. Several incidents have been reported, indicating an uptick in such occurrences. In May 2023, a fistfight broke out at the Magic Kingdom Train Station in Walt Disney World, resulting in injuries and police intervention. This incident was part of a series of altercations at the resort, including another fight in July 2023 in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom. This altercation, captured on social media, occurred in the walkway between Tomorrowland Speedway and Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe. The specifics of what started the altercation were unclear, but it led to two people being removed and banned from Walt Disney World Resort. These incidents are not isolated. In December 2022, a fight broke out during the 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' section of Harmonious at EPCOT, and in July 2022, a massive brawl erupted near Peter Pan's Flight in Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland over an alleged bump in a ride queue. Fights have also been reported on the Magic Kingdom ferryboats. In response to the increasing number of incidents, Disney added a "courtesy" section to their website, emphasizing respect, kindness, and compassion among guests. The policy states that those who cannot adhere to these standards may be asked to leave the Disney resorts. While exact statistics on the frequency of such incidents are not readily available, these reports suggest a growing concern over guest behavior and safety at Disney parks. This episode of "The Other Side of The Bell" is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. Please enjoy this conversation with John and world-renowned trumpeter, Chris Botti. Chris was featured back in Episode #24, and now again in Episode #113 with the release of his first album in over 10 years. A video version of this episode is also available on YouTube. About Chris Botti Trumpeter Chris Botti s renowned for his versatility in both jazz and pop music. His mother, a pianist and teacher, was his first musical influence. Botti began playing trumpet at nine and fully committed to it at 12 after hearing Miles Davis. His early achievements include performing at Carnegie Hall with the McDonald's All American High School Jazz band. During his formative years, Botti was significantly influenced by his time at Indiana University, where he studied under renowned jazz educators David Baker and William Adam. This period was crucial in shaping his musical style and approach. Botti's career took off with short touring stints with Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich, and his relationship with Paul Simon in the 1990s further expanded his musical collaborations. Additionally, Botti's association with Sting, particularly touring as a featured soloist in Sting's "Brand New Day" tour, played a pivotal role in his career. This collaboration not only broadened his musical exposure but also significantly influenced the trajectory of his career, marking a key phase in his development as a musician. His solo debut album, "First Wish," was released in 1995, marking the start of a successful solo career. Botti's work often bridges jazz and pop, demonstrated in albums like "A Thousand Kisses Deep" and "When I Fall in Love." His album "Impressions" won a Grammy in 2013 for Best Pop Instrumental Album, a category for which he had received several nominations. Chris Botti's current projects showcase his enduring creativity and versatility as a musician, including his Blue Note Records debut, "Vol. 1," released on October 20th. This album marks a fresh start for Botti, emphasizing a return to the jazz essence of his artistry. "Vol. 1" features beautiful new ballad renditions of standards, including “Old Folks,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and “Blue In Green.” This project signifies Botti crossing back to acoustic jazz and classic standards after achieving crossover success in both jazz and pop arenas. In addition to his new album, Botti is embarking on an innovative venture, "Botti at Sea." This luxury cruise, personally curated by Botti, promises an exceptional experience of ensemble entertainment and showmanship. Scheduled to sail from February 8 to 15, 2024, the cruise departs from Miami with stops in Aruba and Curaçao. "Botti at Sea" is set to offer a unique blend of music and luxury, further highlighting Botti's flair for combining artistic pursuits with novel experiences. American SongwriterBefore radio and television, movies and recordings, entertainment was often a family or community matter.Someone in the family could play a musical instrument, or a neighborhood musician would play for small gatherings. In addition, there would be travelling groups of musicians, actors and clowns who would go from town to town.In nineteenth century United States, one of the most popular forms of entertainment was the minstrel show.Black slavery was still permitted in the southern states until 1865.Even after that date, the lives of many blacks working on large farms or plantations did not change much. They did hard physical labor in the fields, had little control over their lives, and very little time to relax with their friends.Foster, who was born in 1826, made this situation the background for many of his songs.White musicians would try to imagine the feelings of black men and women working on the plantations. They would write songs in the dialect or speech patterns that they thought black slaves used.In these songs, the black people would be talking about their hardships, falling in love, playing music and dancing, and finally growing old and dying. They would play musical instruments, like the banjo, a small four-stringed guitar, which black people played often. As a small boy, Stephen Foster had sometimes been taken to a black church by his family's black servant, Olivia Pise. Here he first heard the melodies that inspired his own songs.Only a couple of Foster's songs are based directly on "Negro spirituals;" but many of his songs have the natural simplicity and emotional power of folk songs. The youngest member of a large family, Foster showed his musical talent at an early age.Growing up in an energetic business family Stephen was expected to become a businessman. And,for a while, he worked as a book keeper.Foster attended minstrel shows and tried to get the performers to sing his songs.Sometimes the performers would steal his songs and publish them under their own names.Copyright laws were weak and rarely enforced,so some music publishers would just go ahead and publish a song without paying the songwriter.Since Foster hoped to make a living as a songwriter, this was a problem.Foster's first hit song was "Oh!Susanna" published in 1848.It became popular with the thousands of men from all over the United States who were heading west to the Californian gold-rush of 1849.Unfortunately,as an unknown song writer Foster received no money from his early songs. He seems to have given them out right to the music publishers, just to establish his reputation.Foster's name, however, was soon widely known, and in 1849 he was able to afford to give up book keeping, and marry the daughter of a Pittsburgh physician.During the next five years, he earned a moderately good income from songwriting. In 1851, a daughter Marion was born.Foster wrote many of his best-known songs at this time - "Old Folks at Home"in 1851;"My Old Kentucky Home" in 1853, and "Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair" in 1854.Difficulties in Foster's marriage began fairly soon.He spent days locked in his room working on his songs. Then he would rush out with his materials to the local music store, presumably to test out the songs on his friends.Eventually, his wife and daughter left him.Foster died alone in a rooming house in 1864.However,there were very few typically American songs.Foster provided many songs that expressed the life of nineteenth century U.S.A.In a sense, Foster helped to create roots for American popular music.

Hello to you listening in Woodinville, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. We are not used to people of advanced years, seniors, elders, crones, old folks becoming prolific in the waning years of their lives. And yet, witness recently departed 81 year old musician David Crosby who in 2014, when he was 72 years of age released his first solo album in 21 years, “Croz,” which debuted in the Billboard Top 40. Following that Mr. Crosby released five solo albums, most recently “For Free” in 2021 at the age of 79. He was quoted in 2019 saying that his late-in-life resurgence was sparked by his realization that “at this stage, you don't know if you've got two weeks or 10 years,” adding, “Really what matters is what you do with whatever time you have.”As I get ready to celebrate my Happy Continuation Day on February 4th I know I've not yet earned Mr. Crosby's advanced age nor resurgence of prolific output; however, today I am doing what matters because I don't know how much time I have. What matters? I help people and organizations find the words they don't know they have to tell the story that communicates their values, purpose and vision.I cannot say I do change the world; but I cannot say I don't.Call to Action: If you are curious about how to find the words to tell your story, what you're about so you connect and succeed in the spirit of who you are, let's work together. Synopsis Today we celebrate three legendary figures in American popular music. The first is Stephen Foster, the great American songwriter of the 19th century who composed 189 classic songs including “Beautiful Dreamer” and “Old Folks at Home.” Foster was born on this date in 1826 in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania. The second figure we honor today is the incredibly influential 20th century jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong, who claimed to have been born on this date in New Orleans in the year 1900. It seems too good to be true that Foster and Armstrong should both have been born on the Fourth of July—in fact, Armstrong's real birthday occurred on August 4, 1901. Apparently, Armstrong wasn't sure of the exact details, so he and his agent decided that it would be good publicity for Armstrong to be born on the Fourth of July and at the start of the new century. The great Vaudeville and Broadway song and dance man, George M. Cohan, also believed he was born on the Fourth of July, in 1878—a public misconception reinforced by the famous 1942 biographical film of Cohan's life, “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” starring James Cagney as George M. The belated discovery of Cohan's birth certificate, however, proved that a Yankee Doodle Dandy he may have been, but one actually born on the THIRD of July.
