This week we cover the cases of two women sentenced to death for the crime of filicide. Nathalie discusses the case of Melissa Lucio, subject of the 2020 documentary, The State of Texas vs. Melissa. Melissa was convicted of the abuse and killing of her two-year-old daughter. Melissa was arrested and convicted of murder because of the evidence of abuse…but being responsible for abuse does not necessarily make someone a murderer. While Melissa did admit to some of the abuse, she denied being responsible for her child's death. Nathalie explores the intricacies of this case and the process of appeals. Rachel then tells the story of Christie Michelle Scott. On August 16th, 2008, Christie's son Mason was killed in a fire in her home. Christie was distraught…or so it seemed. It turned out that Christie had taken out a new life insurance policy on her son just before his death. She also had been involved in a few home fires before this event. Was Christie a very unlucky woman? Or was there a more sinister explanation? Melissa Smith is the CEO of Wex Inc. a provider of payment processing and information management services in the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They have around 5,000 employees and under Melissa’s leadership the company has gone from $50 million to $1.7 billion in revenue. Melissa began at Wex Inc. in 1997 as a senior financial analyst and she worked her way up to being CFO and then President of the Americas before becoming CEO.  A lot of things in the world have been changed by Covid-19. The way organizations operate, the way employees connect with one another, and even the way leaders have to lead. Melissa Smith, the CEO of Wex Inc., who is responsible for around 5,000 employees around the world says connecting with her people is more important now than ever before. And one important way she does that is through recognizing her people for what they do. She takes time to send handwritten notes to employees who have been promoted, or who have gone above and beyond in a project, or who have volunteered for events in the community. She believes that people need to be recognized with little things like handwritten notes and big things like stock grants. She says it is so important for people to know that their work is recognized and valued. This recognition can actually go both ways. Melissa has been grateful for letters that her employees have been sending her during the pandemic to let her know they appreciate what she does. In fact, she has one employee who sends her a note every single month, and it really means a lot to Melissa. Overcoming internal and external doubt A lot of leaders deal with imposter syndrome at some point or another. In fact, a majority of the leaders I speak with on the Future of Work podcast admit that they have faced internal and external doubt throughout their careers. It just comes with the territory. Leaders are going to have times when they feel they are not right for the job or that they don’t have the skills to complete a task. So how can you overcome those feelings? Melissa says that when it comes to internal doubt it’s all about toning it down. Most likely those thoughts and feelings will never go away completely, but you have to learn to switch that inside voice off. When it comes to external doubt, it is a balancing act. You have to be able to listen to feedback from others and learn to accept constructive criticism. But you also have to be able to recognize if people are just naysayers who question your abilities without reason. For the naysayers you just have to learn how to move on and prove them wrong.  Melissa’s experience as a female leader While Melissa doesn’t really think of herself as a female leader, she does recognize that some people will be surprised when they meet her, especially because of the industry she is in, which tends to be male dominant. In fact when she recalls a time when she was the CFO at Wex Inc. and she and the head of investor relations were on a call with an investor and a portfolio manager that Melissa had not yet met. When both sides went to hang up, the other side of the call thought they had hung up but hadn’t. So she heard a part of their conversation. The portfolio manager was saying “The CFO is a chick”. And the investor that Melissa knew responded and said “Yes, but she’s a geek chick”. And then they went on to talk about the answers to questions they had. What she took away from that experience is that people recognize that she is different and they stop to acknowledge that, but at the end of the day what they really care about is the content of what she has to say. They care about performance and results. When asked if she has to work harder or be tougher as a female leader, Melissa says, “It is different, yeah. Clearly it's different. I think the important part, though, is those things happen. But if you allow that to be kind of the central part of your thinking, so if I start with the fact that it's unfair, then you're almost putting your own baggage on top of what's already going to be a little bit more difficult.  And so what I think of that is, I would rather not have that in the back of my mind, not have your own mind questioning what you're capable of, on top of what's going to be other people who do perceive that they just can't relate or understand sometimes or how you're capable of doing what you're doing. But that's not for me to own. You know, I think that's for me to a certain extent, to put blinders on and focus on what needs to get done.” The importance of saying yes to opportunities  Melissa has given a talk for TEDx and in it she talks about the importance of saying yes to opportunities at work. Career progression, Melissa believes, is in part our own responsibility. It is part your capability, part sponsorship, and part timing. When you say yes to something outside of your normal responsibilities it allows you to get exposure to people you wouldn’t normally have and it shows a set of skills that are different then what you normally use. As Melissa shares, “Often what I was given for assignments that would be outside of my job were things that weren't fun, or, you know, something was broken, or something was happening across some other parts of the planet. And I was being asked to step in and be involved. And I really think that doing that was part of a big part of my career progression, because it again, allowed people to see me in a different light than they would have if I was just, you know, the CFO or the controller or some of the things that I've done in my past.” So if you get the opportunity to do something outside of your job title, or something even a bit outside of your comfort zone, you should definitely consider saying yes. Dealing with failures and mistakes Every single leader deals with failures or mistakes at some point in their career. Melissa says she views these as learning opportunities. We are all constantly learning and evolving, so using these situations to grow and get better is important. Melissa says it is crucial for leaders to create an environment that accepts failures. If people feel like they can’t fail, they are going to be too safe. One thing she has learned is not to put difficult things off for later.  As she says, “bad news doesn’t age well”. If there is a hard decision you have to make, or a hard announcement you have to give, do it sooner rather than later. Advice Melissa would give to her younger self If she could go back in time and give herself some advice Melissa says she would tell herself you have the power to impact the way others think and feel by your actions. She says, “When you get older, you realize that everything you do affects the people around you when you know, like it or not. And so you have to be, you know, you have to just be thoughtful about that...you might meet with somebody and for you, that meeting, you know, maybe the last thing that's on your mind, but it may be the most important meeting of the day for that other person. And so kind of taking a deep breath, and being the person you want to be in that moment, is, I think, really important. And something particularly in this pandemic environment. Like, you know, you might be running 100 miles an hour and really thinking about a lot of things. But if you can just take a deep breath and reframe yourself for what you're about to go into it. I think that's really important.”

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with health and fitness coach Melissa Gatto. The Ohio native graduated from college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and built up a strong background in a variety of dance forms, from classical ballet, to musical theatre, to tap, among others. Six months following her graduation, she moved to New York City where she danced professionally for the next five years. Upon her retirement, Melissa made her foray into the world of fitness through Crossfit, and eventually made the exciting decision to become a certified trainer. While Melissa loved her career in dance, she laments the intense physical toll it took on her body, not to mention the body dysmorphia she quietly endured as a relatively muscular individual in the professional ballet scene. Even after her retirement, Melissa’s body dysmorphia carried over into Crossfit. She learned to chip away at it over time through therapy, meditation, and journaling in order to “heal old trauma and old wounds, and just let go of negative thoughts around my body and what I feel needs to change”.Melissa also had to work on creating a healthier relationship with food. While she was able to consistently perform as a dancer without much consideration regarding her diet, entering Crossfit in her late 20s was a different story. She might have gotten lean, but she was constantly tired. Melissa experimented with different diets, some leaning her out better than others. Over time, she was forced to consider how nutrition affected her energy levels, lifestyle, and general fitness beyond simply how she looked.Listen in and learn how Melissa practices mindful meditation to keep positive thoughts at the forefront of her thoughts, how she rebuilt her relationship with food after leaving dance, the importance of listening to your body, and best practices for ensuring your body is running on the right type and amount of food. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: ● [00:48] Melissa’s background● [06:00] How dancing full-time affected Melissa’s body over the years● [10:15] How Melissa deals with her body dysmorphia● [14:34] Why Melissa became inspired to train with weights● [17:39] Discovering the importance of nutrition● [24:26] How Melissa’s calorie count as a dancer changed as a Crossfitter● [30:39] Melissa’s philosophy around nutrition and how she coaches her clients● [40:40] Melissa’s advice for those suffering with body dysmorphia or getting started with their fitness journey● [42:08] Melissa’s favorite thing about Austin Memorable Quotes:“Find something that you can get lost in and keep improving upon for a long period of time, instead of necessarily always focusing on your looks.”“We can’t always be in a cut. Where we should be living is maintenance.”“I believe in sustainable habits and flexible dieting. What we eat is our diet. I do not believe in restrictive diets, at all.”“If you don’t physically enjoy eating it, don’t eat it.”“The media has brainwashed us to think that we have to not eat in order to lose weight. That can’t be further from the truth.”“When looking to optimize your nutrition, give yourself some grace and add in the good stuff, because adding in more of the good stuff is going to eventually take the bad stuff out.”Ask Melissa how she can help you along your journey to better fitness and nutrition on Instagram

Melissa knew given the climate into today’s world, there is never a better time to speak to this topic and give listeners an avenue of support where it is so needed.  In Today’s episode, Melissa explains step by step how to connect with your angels.  Giving her listeners a place to start if they have strayed from their faith, or simply never subscribed to the concept of angels.  Melissa helps you to develop your intuitive abilities while guiding you on how to receive signs and more from the divine, reminding us that we are all supported in life, every step of the way and that we are being led.     It is simply our job, if we desire, to open up to the divine guidance that is always readily available and accessible to you at any time - no matter your religion, how you’ve lived your life or your beliefs up until this point.   Brief outline:   Melissa begins by sharing how she discovered her gifts and even turned away from them, and what transpired in her life to have her return and have such unwavering faith and connection to source, speaking to her angels daily.   She takes you on an in depth journey for yourself to learn simple ways to bridge the gap for yourself in your own life based on your desires.  Melissa takes you through how to get started, what it can look like and how to connect to your angels and spirit guides today, to receive the divine guidance you’ve been wanting or needing in your life.   We are all always being guided to what you need in life - it’s our job to pay attention to the signs.  There are no chance encounters.  Pay attention, notice who shows up on your path - both literal and figurative signs you see, words that are spoken to you, and most of all the internal guidance you feel.  These internal cues are the most powerful and often easily discarded by our minds and preconceived notions about life and ourselves.  As children we listen, as we age our minds and “practical” thinking override our internal Divine guidance system.  Think of this system as your unique compass guiding you to your dreams.  The interference is the belief that we are limited beings.    While Melissa is discovering her connection to herself, she shares how she also recognized that God is in her, that she and all of us are of divine consciousness and most importantly that we are all one.   Nothing is outside of us ever, it is all within us and our desires are always meant for us and we are being guided to receive them.  It’s our job not to block and interfere with the guidance but to subscribe to it and allow it.   What You’ll Learn: Techniques to connect with yourself: Quieting your mind Meditate Journaling  Just being with yourself and being your best friend “We call on the angels above all our Archangels, the guardian angels to each and everyone of you and only light and love filled entities may fill this room, may  fill this space and be present on today’s call. I am calling on you Archangel Michael and Jesus, Mary Magdalene, blessed Mother and God up above. Please remove my ego from this call. May only the words you have given me to speak come to fruition. May only the guidance these ladies seek be provided. May only love be present here and white lies be cast out upon everyone present and those that weren’t able to attend. In all protection of golden light and all love of white light. We know dark entities are present. Again, I ask for removal of the ego  at any time that it comes back in. And we thank you for your continued love, guidance and support. Amen” There are 12 Archangels that you can call to. There are also nature angels The difference between Earth Angels and Archangels “As I see with only loving eyes, I speak only loving words, I hear only loving thoughts and I feel only loving emotions. I am love, I give love, I emote love from every cell of my being, from that of the Archangel.”  There are four primary archangels: There’s Michael, Gabrielle, Arielle and Rafael.    Key quotes: “It’s hard to explain, I just feel it”   “There is a reason for everything, things don’t always happen just because it’s an accident. There’s a reason if a book falls from a shelf and opens to a specific page. There’s a reason why when you hear a song on the radio and the lyrics speak to you and it’s the words you’ve been dying to hear. This is not by happenstance“  “Angels have no space and time limitations” “As I see with only loving eyes, I speak only loving words, I hear only loving thoughts and I feel only loving emotions. I am love, I give love, I emote love from every cell of my being, from that of the Archangel” “We have to experience darkness to see the light” “You will always know if there’s not right energy around you because it will guide you” “Archangel Michael is like God’s right hand” “What they really want you to know is that they have the answers to help you with any blocks you have right now” “Angels are giving you signs all the time” “Listen to the words on the radio. Listen to what strangers tell you. Listen to the guidance system that says “hey stop here”. Take a moment, are you listening? It’s when we don’t listen that other things start happening” “You are a co-creator in your life” “You have divine within you” “There is nothing out of your reach, nothing you can’t have, nothing that you’re not meant to experience. And there is no pain that you’re meant to endure. Only rightness” “Cleanse your mind of anything that doesn’t serve you. See that love that you’re meant to have and need” “And, you along with me, we are the light of God himself” “Start with your angels. Use them. Let them guide you. She is here to guide and support you in this being an amazing and enjoyable journey of self-discovery and coming back to Wholeness. Another way she has found to support you is through guided meditations and she has another one here for you today.   But first, Melissa encourages listeners about their mindset during this time in the world. She underscores that you get to choose your experience, and we are being called to what matters most in life: human connection. She walks listeners  through practical ways to reframe their thinking in order to be victors instead of victims. There are two paths you can choose, one is based on fear and the other is based on love.  One will place you as the victim and the other as the victor of your circumstance. You have the option and right now, the paths are very clear and she helps you to identify which one you have been following and what changes you can make. After encouraging listeners, Melissa shares some tried and true reading recommendations from her own bookshelf for others to enjoy while spending time at home. She then guides a meditation to help calm the body and relax the mind.  Today’s guided meditation is to help you release fear and choose love, grounding you and relaxing you, to de-stress and honor all you feel and your inner most desires, bringing them close to your heart and seeing them as yours. In this episode, Melissa Kathryn talks about Coronavirus from a place of support to help you feel grounded, positive and safe in when the world may feel unsafe and times are uncertain. She begins with a meditation to ground you in, and calm the body. Melissa offers that this time is an opportunity to shift from the perspective of quarantine to one of opportunity. She encourages listeners to recognize triggers and use this time to go higher within themselves and transcend these limiting beliefs or triggers around them and within themselves.  This up-leveling includes tuning out negative messages, media and those in your life prone to fear based and lack thinking, to instead embrace how to make good memories for your family and yourself, while focusing inward on what serves you and others better.   This is a time out from the normal chaos of life, and time to tune in to what you have needed for a long time, if given the chance to slow down. While Melissa understands the personal effect of this virus from the impact on her own family, her desire is for you to wade these waters via connection with your body rather than your mind.  As always, feel free to contact her with your thoughts or questions on this episode.  What You’ll Learn:     Receive a  guided meditation to relax, restore and calm your body     Recognize triggers that are your default and learn how to transcend them ●      Learn how  to embrace this time as an opportunity to best serve yourself and others   Links: Melissa Kathryn’s website: http://melissakathryn.com/ Connect with Melissa Kathryn on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/radiancemk Connect with Melissa Kathryn on Instagram: @melissa.kathryn Join MK’s Exclusive FREE Online Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/yourjourneytowholeness/ Receive additional FREE trainings with Melissa Kathryn on Youtube Here: https://bit.ly/34rqlM Have Questions, Need Support or Want Melissa to Coach You?  E-mail:  support@melissakathryn.com Application to Coach with Melissa Kathryn: https://bit.ly/31s0jZD

A Farmish Kind of Life
068: How to Grow a Year’s Worth of Food (with Melissa K Norris)

A Farmish Kind of Life

Many people think I'm a gardener but here on the homestead, the chickens, pigs, ducks, turkeys, and other animals are really my forte. When it comes to gardening, I'm little more than a toss some seeds at the ground and hope for the best kind of gal. So the concept that one could grow a year's worth of food in their garden is mind blowing to me, and I had to find out more on how to make this happen. (Don’t want to read all the words? This blog post is also a podcast—just press the triangle play button on the little black bar at the top of this post!) I recently had the opportunity to talk with Melissa K Norris of Pioneering Today, and she taught me a lot about the prospect of growing more food on my property and helped banish the feeling of overwhelm (meaning, hyperventilation followed by I-give-up) that often happens when I try to dig into this. Melissa's new book The Family Garden Plan: Grow a Year's Worth of Sustainable and Healthy Food digs into how to increase your harvest and maximize the space you have using organic and natural methods to raise a year's worth of the fruits and vegetables your family enjoys by using her super fabulous step-by-step plans and charts. Okay, but be honest. Can you really grow a year's worth of food in your garden? While Melissa says it's totally possible to grow a year's worth of food, she is also quick to point out that even the pioneers—who many of us aspire to be like—did not grow 100% of their own food. Melissa suggests starting the process of growing a year's worth of food by planning to grow a year's worth of one particular crop. You can grow other crops—and she highly recommends it—but she also advises that you start slowly. Begin with one crop, the one your family eats the most of, and year after year you can add more and more crops to your year's worth of food plan. By trying to grow a year's worth of food in this way, you won't get overwhelmed and quit. This approach is attainable. It's do-able. And it's realistic. When planning to grow a year's worth of food, how do you figure out how much you need to plant of what crops? It's not as much as work as you think, Melissa says. It is, however, important to figure this out for your family. For instance, my family goes through a lot of tomatoes, peppers, and squash, but doesn't use hardly any green beans or radishes—which might be the complete opposite of what my neighbor is raising and using. If you actively plan your menus on the homestead, you're already ahead of the game in figuring out this puzzle. You know which individual fruits and vegetables your family consumes. If you're not a menu planner, you can start keep tracking now. Start keeping track of what fruits and veggies your family eats every single day. Tally it for a month, then multiply by 12. With that final number, you can start to figure out what things you will need to plant in your garden. After determining if those fruits and vegetables you're eating actually grow where you're living, and whether or not preserving those items is realistic for you, you can go about doing the math to figure out how many plants will need to be planted to net you what your family needs. And how in the world do you do that? Actually—Melissa already did the work for you. And I told her I loved her. Because friends, math is not my favorite subject or my strong point. Melissa has—among many other things—a chart in her new book, The Family Garden Plan, that will help you figure this out! How much does each plant give you on average when it comes to needing your cups? If you need 100 cups of green beans to get you through the year, how many green bean plants does that require? My gal Melissa has got it figured out for you. If I'm going to grow a year's worth of food, is this going to take a ton of space? It will obviously depend on the crop you're choosing. For instance, root crops take up more space than if you are doing something  that can ...
