Is your self-image suffering? Do you struggle with body shame issues? If you're like many people, you may see yourself through critical eyes that tell you you're not fit enough, thin enough, or as attractive as you'd like to be. From decades of research, I've found that many people of all genders suffer from feelings of low self-esteem and poor self-confidence that are often connected to body shame. And social media – with its often-doctored images promoting impossibly perfect ideals – can makes things worse. In fact, people often give up altogether when the bar is set too high. So how can you get unstuck and get motivated to simply be (and love) your best self--whatever that might look like? Are gentle mindfulness and self-compassion the keys? I'm joined by barre3 CEO and co-founder, Sadie Lincoln who will walk us into the realm of how mindful, compassionate exercise can increase body positivity, self-love, and overall well-being. Topics discussed include body image, body shaming, self-love, self-compassion, mindfulness, mindful movement, fitness, compassion, exercise, barre3, weight, weight loss, dieting, self-care, female entrepreneurs, negative self-talk, and positive self-talk. This episode is part of Body Relationship Month — our special July series where we're revisiting some of our most-loved episodes to help you heal your relationship with your body. Many of us struggle to overcome society's message that you need to look a certain way to be valued. Adopting these messages (willingly or not) often creates debilitating battles with how we see our bodies. This negative body relationship can permeate nearly every aspect of life and diminish our entire experience. We end up living day after day with someone (ourselves) we don't accept, love, or appreciate unconditionally. And well… that sucks. But there are steps you can take to embrace your imperfections, accept yourself as-is, and still pursue your health and fitness goals. The result? Peace, freedom, and finally escaping a lifetime sentence in your food and body prison. In this episode — “Embracing Imperfection: How to Love Your Body at Every Stage” — you'll learn:
Why is it so hard for women to love their bodies? In this heartfelt and empowering episode, we unpack the real struggles behind body image — from constant comparison and body dysmorphia to the silent grief we carry for the versions of our bodies we've lost. Backed by research and real talk, we uncover why so many women feel disconnected from their bodies and how we can start rewriting the narrative. You'll walk away with:Insights into why women struggle more with body positivityThe emotional toll of comparison and unrealistic standardsFive practical tools to start seeing your body through a lens of gratitude, not judgment Your body is not the problem — the standard is. And in this episode, we start breaking free.In a world where being perfect seems to be the goal- - it's important that we know who's we are & who we are. We aren't called to be perfect - we are called to be better today than yesterday! - that's it. It doesn't have to be quantum leaps, in fact I believe that in the day to day -our little steps in the right directions! I am on a mission to help women become more of who they were created to be and less of who they were told to be. And, that takes intention, that takes action : My goal is to drop some wisdom, bring you resources and that takes community. The real unlock is the Inner Work, and that's what we do here! So many of us believe that what we eat or how/how much we exercise are the most importnt drivers of weight loss. But the reality is momentum and the compound effect are far more impactful. What pulls us out of momentum are "little quits" - you still want to lose weight or stop emotionally eating, but you start to doubt you'll be able to hit your goal for a particular week or month. You unintentionally pull back, because the underlying thought is "I won't hit this goal, so why bother keep trying?" Usually we'll follow it up with a consolation thought, like: "I'll start over Monday," or "I'll start over next month." Today we explore this concept and how to stop the "little quits" so that you can build momentum and actually enjoy your life while losing weight. Keep listening for more. And when you're ready to stop emotionally eating and create the life and body you crave, I can help. When was the last time you looked in the mirror and genuinely said, “I think I'm beautiful”? In this episode, I share a powerful moment with my daughter that made me realize just how rare it is for women to confidently own their beauty—without guilt, hesitation, or fear of being seen as arrogant. We'll break down the subconscious beliefs around self-image, the difference between confidence and conceit, and how we can teach the next generation (and ourselves!) to embrace self-love without shame. Plus, I'll give you practical ways to shift the way you talk about yourself, because the way you speak to yourself is what your children—and your subconscious—will believe. Everyone struggles with feelings of self-worth and self-acceptance from time to time. Our bodies are sacred; as the Bible says, we're created in God's image. Yet the enemy of our souls does what he can to discredit and devalue our worth, often by casting shade about our own body image. Today you get to meet Hope Orr, a skilled boudoir photographer and owner of Elevated Boudoir, as we talk about her journey, experiences, and the profound impact boudoir photography has had on herself and her clients. I had the privilege of meeting Hope over six years ago through a business connection, and I'm so excited that you get to meet her today. Hope has a grace about her and you can tell she's a very caring individual. In this episode, you'll hear Hope share her personal battle with body image and toxic perfectionism, and how a spontaneous boudoir session changed her perspective on herself. She discusses the transformative power of boudoir photography, the importance of trust, and shares three principles that can help anyone embrace a positive self-image. The heart of this episode is about the deep personal and emotional journey and broader impact of embracing one's true self. News and Resources We're hiring! Is your relationship with food or your body complicated? Do you struggle with body confidence and self-love? You might be surprised about how many aspects of life are impacted by your body image. Wondering if you can truly love your body? Spoiler alert: you can! In this Salad with a Side of Fries episode, Marla Mervis-Hartmann, a dynamic speaker, bestselling author, and coach specializing in body confidence, self-love, and intuitive eating joins the show. Together, Marla and Jenn dive deep into healing a challenged relationship with your body, breaking free from diet culture and disordered eating, and embracing true self-acceptance. Marla shares powerful insights on shifting away from food restriction and guilt, learning to trust your body, and fostering a sustainable, positive mindset around food and body image. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:40] Marla reveals how she began her focus on healing her body image[10:07] How negative body image can show up in our lives[19:20] Listening to your body and befriending yourself[25:52] Choosing the road of self-compassion and acceptance[30:48] Reframing your perception of your body image KEY TAKEAWAYS: People believe reaching a certain weight or body shape will bring them happiness and confidence, but true healing comes from addressing deeper emotional and psychological factors, not just physical appearance. How we feel about our bodies can impact our relationships, work, self-worth, and ability to be present. It can lead to comparison, avoidance of opportunities, and even withholding joy from ourselves.Recognizing and challenging diet culture, societal pressures, and past traumas is crucial for improving body image. Developing self-compassion, addressing underlying emotional wounds, and reframing our relationship with food and our bodies are key steps to healing.Finding a balanced, self-compassionate approach to body acceptance and eating is essential. Instead of rigid dieting allow for self-acceptance, mindful choices, and kindness toward oneself—much like a best friend offering support.QUOTES: [6:10] “I needed deep help with this. So that's what took me on this journey of recovery, of healing my relationship with my body and my food.” Marla Mervis-Hartmann[9:44] “We can be so mean to ourselves, the things that we say in our head compared to what we would never say out loud to someone else, but we say them to ourselves.” Jenn Trepeck[25:09] “If you're hearing this right now, that moment when something shows up and maybe it's not even around your food and your body, perhaps it's about something completely different, that you just have this seed of wisdom that says, ‘Let's be kind to me here'.” Marla Mervis-Hartmann[29:21] “I would try to walk beside someone in a window to see our reflection, because I was like ‘She's thin, am I as thin as her?', and then I would compare myself.” Marla Mervis-Hartmann[32:48] “And now, what can I do for myself? Even if we ask it instead of what we would say to a friend, and now ‘what can I do for you?' say, ‘what can I do for me?' I love that question.” Jenn Trepeck[36:26] “We're having this conversation and we say ‘their body is okay for them, but their body would not be OK for me'. That disconnect, then, ask the following question: ‘Why is it okay for them and not for you? What's the other thing they have that makes it alright that I don't have that makes it not OK?'” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Love Your Body Love Yourself - BookBreaking the Cycle - Free GiftLove Your Body Love Yourself - WebsiteTEDx Talk: The Secret Ingredient to Feeling Good in Your BodyBe-Friend Yourself - BookMarla Mervis-Hartmann- InstagramLove Your Body Love Yourself - FacebookMarla Mervis-Hartmann - YouTubeGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Marla Mervis-Hartmann is a dynamic speaker, bestselling author, and coach specializing in body confidence, food freedom, and self-love. The world constantly tells us how we should look, what we should weigh, and whether we're enough. But what does God actually teach us about our bodies? In this episode, I sit down with Lexi Walbeck for an honest and powerful conversation about body image, confidence, and divine identity. Together, we explore the doctrine of being created in the image of our Heavenly Parents, the sacred truth that our bodies are temples, and the reality that mortality comes with physical pain and struggles. As we shared our personal experiences, the Spirit taught us so much about how to shift our perspective and keep working toward seeing ourselves the way God does. I can't wait for you to hear this conversation!
