In this episode of the Brainy Ballerina Podcast, I'm joined by dance body image mentor Katrena Cohea to unpack a recent pop-culture moment that sparked major debate in the ballet and opera communities. After a prominent actor publicly dismissed ballet and opera as art forms that “no one cares about anymore,” dancers and arts organizations responded with outrage, humor, and viral marketing. We unpack why the comment struck such a nerve for dancers who have devoted our lives to the art form. But beyond the initial reaction, we dive deeper into the bigger questions the moment raises: Is ballet evolving fast enough? What barriers are keeping audiences away? And how can dancers, teachers, and companies ensure ballet continues to thrive for generations to come?Key Points in this Episode: How ballet's reputation as “stuffy” or elitist affects public perception The reality of underfunding in the arts and its impact on progress The importance of evolving traditions while preserving what makes ballet special How toxic training environments can drive dancers (and future audiences!) away The role of marketing, storytelling, and social media in attracting new audiences How small actions by teachers, dancers, and ballet lovers can create meaningful change in the ballet worldConnect with Katrena:INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/yourbodyimagebffRelated Episodes:76. In today's episode, we're talking about a question that comes up all the time in recovery — is it actually possible to love your body?Because if we're honest, sometimes “body love” can feel unrealistic. Or forced. Or like something everyone else has figured out except you. If you're in recovery and still having bad body image days, you might be wondering if you're doing it wrong. In this episode, we'll unpack what body love really means (and what it doesn't). We'll talk about body neutrality, acceptance, and whether loving your body is even the goal — or if peace might be a better aim. I'll share some honest reflections on how this evolves over time, and why you don't have to feel amazing about your body to be fully recovered. We cover:The difference between body love, body acceptance, and body neutralityWhy social media's version of “loving your body” can feel unhelpfulWhat realistic, sustainable body peace can actually look likeLet me know your thoughts! Do you ever look in the mirror and immediately start criticizing your body? What if the problem isn’t your body—but the way you’ve learned to talk to it? And what if confidence has less to do with changing how you look, and more to do with changing how you think? In this episode of A Really Good Cry, Radhi opens up an honest, deeply personal conversation about body image, self-criticism, and the exhausting pressure to look a certain way. From childhood comments that linger for decades to the daily habit of body-shaming ourselves without even noticing, Radhi explores why so many women feel disconnected from their bodies—and how to begin healing that relationship with compassion instead of control. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why most body insecurities aren’t actually yours to begin with The difference between caring for your body and obsessing over it How constant self-criticism keeps you stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction Why confidence is an energy, not a body type Practical mindset shifts to stop attacking your body and start respecting it This isn’t about forcing body positivity or loving every inch of yourself overnight—it’s about ending the inner war, reclaiming peace, and remembering that your body is the least interesting thing about you. "How can I love my body when I don't even like what I see in the mirror?"If this thought has ever made you at odds with your attempts to be “positive” about your body, you're not alone. You've been told that to achieve lasting weight loss, you must love your body first. But what if that advice is actually keeping you stuck hating your body? In this nuanced, must-listen episode, we challenge the popular narrative: You do NOT have to love your body to lose weight. We'll uncover the surprising truth of what it's costing you to constantly try and pretend you love your body and why trying to force self-love when you don't yet trust yourself with food or decisions can actually create more self-rejection.Tune in to discover:The profound difference between "loving your body" and self-acceptance without judgment—and why one unlocks lasting change while the other is a recipe for shame and self-pity. My personal cautionary tale (involving a tree and my inability to climb it) that revealed the moment I finally faced reality and broke free from the all or nothing cycle. Why true love for your body is a byproduct of action—not a prerequisite—leading to more vitality, less food noise, and a sustainable, peaceful life. If you're ready to stop hiding from photos and start creating a body and life you genuinely love, this episode shows you the radical, shame-free path to getting there.P.S. You have to “miss out” on food, drinks AND events.  But the other issue is that we're in such a hurry to get “there,” because we typically withhold praise, validation, and feeling good about ourselves until we do.  No compliments, no feeling proud of yourself; just constant criticism until you've lost all the weight.  This is what makes weight loss hard.  This is what makes weight loss suck.  But there's a better way.  Keep listening for more on the secret to actually speeding up your weight loss journey.    And when you're ready to go all in on yourself, end emotional eating, lose weight, and create a life that lights you the f**k up…  I'll show you how.  Schedule your free consultation at www.bodyyoucrave.com/schedule.   Still looking for a resource that actually helps you decode your emotional eating habit? From decades of research, I've found that many people of all genders suffer from feelings of low self-esteem and poor self-confidence that are often connected to body shame. This episode is part of Body Relationship Month — our special July series where we're revisiting some of our most-loved episodes to help you heal your relationship with your body. Many of us struggle to overcome society's message that you need to look a certain way to be valued. Adopting these messages (willingly or not) often creates debilitating battles with how we see our bodies. This negative body relationship can permeate nearly every aspect of life and diminish our entire experience. We end up living day after day with someone (ourselves) we don't accept, love, or appreciate unconditionally. And well… that sucks. But there are steps you can take to embrace your imperfections, accept yourself as-is, and still pursue your health and fitness goals. The result? Peace, freedom, and finally escaping a lifetime sentence in your food and body prison. In this episode — “Embracing Imperfection: How to Love Your Body at Every Stage” — you'll learn:

Why is it so hard for women to love their bodies? In this heartfelt and empowering episode, we unpack the real struggles behind body image — from constant comparison and body dysmorphia to the silent grief we carry for the versions of our bodies we've lost. Backed by research and real talk, we uncover why so many women feel disconnected from their bodies and how we can start rewriting the narrative. You'll walk away with:Insights into why women struggle more with body positivityThe emotional toll of comparison and unrealistic standardsFive practical tools to start seeing your body through a lens of gratitude, not judgment Your body is not the problem — the standard is. And in this episode, we start breaking free.In a world where being perfect seems to be the goal- - it's important that we know who's we are & who we are. We aren't called to be perfect - we are called to be better today than yesterday! - that's it. It doesn't have to be quantum leaps, in fact I believe that in the day to day -our little steps in the right directions! I am on a mission to help women become more of who they were created to be and less of who they were told to be. And, that takes intention, that takes action : My goal is to drop some wisdom, bring you resources and that takes community. The real unlock is the Inner Work, and that's what we do here! When was the last time you looked in the mirror and genuinely said, “I think I'm beautiful”? In this episode, I share a powerful moment with my daughter that made me realize just how rare it is for women to confidently own their beauty—without guilt, hesitation, or fear of being seen as arrogant. We'll break down the subconscious beliefs around self-image, the difference between confidence and conceit, and how we can teach the next generation (and ourselves!) to embrace self-love without shame. Plus, I'll give you practical ways to shift the way you talk about yourself, because the way you speak to yourself is what your children—and your subconscious—will believe. If this resonates, my Love Your Body course is the perfect next step to rewire the beliefs holding you back from truly loving yourself. And if you're ready for deeper transformation, my private coaching will help you break through the subconscious blocks keeping you from confidence in business, relationships, and creativity.
