Donald Trump's negotiation style, particularly in trade deals like those involving tariffs with Canada, Mexico, and China, follows a few consistent patterns. Here are five key tactics he repeatedly employs: 1. Maximum Leverage & Escalation Trump often starts negotiations by applying maximum pressure—such as imposing tariffs—forcing the other party to respond. He escalates tensions to create a sense of urgency, making the other side feel they must concede to avoid further damage. 2. Unpredictability & Chaos Strategy He thrives on keeping opponents off balance by making bold, sometimes contradictory statements. This unpredictability forces the other side to second-guess his next move, giving him an advantage in setting the terms of the deal. 3. Anchoring with Extreme Demands Trump frequently sets the initial terms at an extreme position (e.g., high tariffs, threats to withdraw from trade agreements) so that any compromise appears like a concession from him, even if it was his intended outcome all along. 4. Reframing the Narrative (Winning & Losing) He frames deals as a zero-sum game where America must "win" and the other side must "lose." By controlling the narrative and appealing to patriotism, he builds public support and pressures opponents into conceding. 5. Walking Away & Testing Resolve He is willing to walk away or delay agreements to test the other side's desperation. This time of the year it's easy to check out. Especially if you don't have the results that you wanted to create over the last 12 months. And that's really why I detest New Year's Resolutions. It's just another false starting point when in truth, we have a choice in every moment to make a powerful, new decision rather than a decision from resignation. So this week I'm going to COACH YOU! I want you to have a sense of clarity and certainty BEFORE New Year arrives. I want you to feel anchored in to resourceful and powerful emotions AND taken a step toward creating the self concept you need in order to start creating the results you want. And before we start, here's a thought I want you to borrow as we do this work together. THERE IS PLENTY OF TIME LEFT THIS YEAR FOR ME TO GET DIFFERENT RESULTS AND CREATE A POWERFUL PLAN FOR GROWTH. This episode is super personal. This is my story used as a tool to help others navigate their journey through healing the death of a beloved. This is my personal experience after moving through trauma and loss. He used his hobbies as an excuse to create his lifestyle. He's a grinder and has worked himself into his diversity of businesses, but has kept his focus on having the lifestyle he wants. Talk to us about your businesses. What are they? He started with massage therapy franchises. He then branched into gym franchises. He owns a wholesale business for construction supplies – it came out of left field that he acquired because he enjoys home projects. He also has a fence business. He's sold several businesses, one for about $8 million. How does someone build their business to support their lifestyle instead of being beholden to their business? Making sure you want to have a business is the first thing. You must understand the skill sets needed to run each business and hire and promote high performers to run the day to day. It is like being a conductor in an orchestra. But, you have think that way from the beginning. Know the lifestyle you want ahead of building the business to create it. Do you have any businesses where you've outsources to VA's? The coaching business because it is virtual. It is harder to do with brick and mortar. Todd uses tools like Upwork, Freelance and others. Any best practices on scaling and running a business a well? Scaling is all about delegation. Coming from being an employee, you are trained to work employee hours and many entrepreneurs that come from being an employee just work like that as an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur needs to learn to empower and get out of the way. Don't be a bottleneck for decisions. One example Todd gives is when he had an employee come to him frustrated because the employee was always waiting on Todd for decisions. When they talked, Todd found that the employee was capable of making the decisions – maybe even better ones that Todd, so they put together a process to allow the employee to do so. You don't need to make all the decisions in your business – in fact, you cannot scale if you have to. Find great people and let them be their best. At the 12 min mark, Todd talks about his 5 pts for empowerment. Trust - It is important to spend a lot of time interviews selecting for character and trust (good judgement) Patience – You must set reasonable expectations and allow time for people to grow. Use mistakes to teach. Escalation Pathways – List out the situations or events that trigger the owner to be involved. Transfer to Coach – You must foster a culture of learning and growth through imperfection. Build Redundancies – You must do everything possible not to be a bottleneck. Processes and systems must be created. You also need to have trained backups for key positions. What challenges come up with multiple businesses? What have you learned to do that well? Running a business is a set of skills that can be learned like playing a sport or other things. Necessity is the mother of invention – as a business owner, you will learn by trial and error and needs that must be fulfilled. Dive in and tackle your biggest challenges, but you must delegate to have the bandwidth to do this. Businesses have to be run with heart – at their core, businesses are people. Help people thrive. And don't worry if you suck at those skills! Most entrepreneurs do to start! Get help earlier and often. Advice for those that want to follow a path like yours in leadership? Lead with compassion. It all comes down to people. At the 29 min mark, Todd talks about how he had imposter syndrome when it came to entrepreneurship because he prefers to do it for having the lifestyle he wants vs. striving for more in some cases. His business is exactly the right size for what he wants to do. How did you come to know exactly what you wanted? Todd can think of a couple instances. The first was when he was still at corporate working overseas. It was right before the collapse in 2008. He has worked on a billion-dollar business plan with a company in an engagement that he led. When done, his company wanted him to come back home. He decided to take a month off and hang in the south of France. It was one of the best months he ever had in his life and it didn't cost a lot to do it. It made him realize how easily he could have a great life and changed his direction. The second was 5 years into his businesses when he had 3 locations. He had an opportunity for adding a 4th. He invested in the 4th business and got caught. It had issues and ended costing him most of his money and cashflow at the time. He decided he was going to make it out – and it took getting rid of his fancy beachfront condo and nice car. He sold it all and rented a trailer. He figured out what was important and focused there. This helped get out of being capital constrained and get out of trouble and after about a year, things were back to normal and thriving for all 4 businesses. He then sold two taking some money off the table. Best advice on how to exit a business? Some cliches hold up. Think about and prepare for it years before you are ready. Plan in advance. Plan, plan, plan. Know your business value and when it is at its best. What has traveling around the world playing polo taught you about how to succeed and run a better business? It really accentuates that business is a set of skills. People come from extremely different walks of life and figure out how to do it. It's the same as entrepreneurship. People everywhere are curious by nature and they dig in and figure things out and create opportunities. You can too. In continued support during COVID 19, Melissa stresses the importance of taking care of your “environment” i.e. your home, head, mind, body and spirit. In this episode, Melissa Kathryn makes it clear, we all have trauma in some form. And the lack of addressing it is doing way more harm than good. We can’t keep brushing areas of our lives and ourselves we fear, under the carpet, out of fear we won’t like what we find or who we are. In fact, Melissa shares the immense damage being done by not giving yourself the grace, love and time to know all facets of yourself. And to this point, that this lack of knowing and accepting oneself and understanding how life events impacts us on a deep, cellular level, is one of the main reasons why, as women we continue to self-sabotage. Melissa talks about trauma being stored in the body including sexual trauma and how it correlates to struggles with weight. She explores the different types of trauma and how they get stored in the body, the purpose they have, followed by an exercise to release it. Melissa also shares personal testimony from her own life, and experiences she’s encountered while working with clients over the past decade, whom have had trauma and the damage that was being done from them not having understood the impact it was making on them, their health and well being by not acknowledging it as such nore understanding how to heal and relate to the traumatic experiences in their lives. The discounting of such event causes these experiences to manifest in forms of illness, disordered eating, lack of beliefs in oneself and a deep seated belief that in some way, you are broken or “not enough”. Melissa is extremely passionate about this topic, encouraging listeners to identify patterns and to take time to experience healing from core wounds to eradicate any further sadness or dis-ease in the body. By doing this work and making changes, she highlights that you will gain a beautiful and powerful connection with your body, develop trust, remove fear and be free. Melissa shares with listeners simple steps for approaching anxiety, overwhelm, and chronic procrastination in a way that will lead to whole body wholeness rather than feeding into the cycle of those tendencies. The first thing to remember is that these feelings originate in your mind, which is set up to always keep you safe, and the answer is to get grounded within yourself and seek the answers from your body. It is often quite difficult to overcome the mindsets that have been programmed in us by our circumstances or by the feelings and needs of our inner child, but a good way to start is with these steps: Know that you will never have a question that your body does not know the answer to. Consider whether you are taking the time to look inward and whether you are trusting the guidance you receive there. Accept that there is nothing wrong with you. You are and can only be right, no matter what your mind tries to tell you about the different parts of yourself. There is so much pressure on women to look, act, talk, and think the “right” way, but there is nothing wrong with you when you are connected to your higher self. Get in touch with your inner child. She has set up these beliefs and narratives for some reason, so take some time with her to find out what she needs. Sit with one hand on your heart and one hand on your womb and ask her what she needs and then affirm that she is safe, that you are safe. When you have had enough time talking with your inner child, merge the parts of yourself by rubbing your arms and legs, recoding your thinking and confirming that you are safe to be and to feel. My new book, The Future Leader, comes out on February 26th and it is based on interviews I had with over 140 CEOs around the world. In the book the two questions that I wanted to answer were: Is the leader of 2030 going to look that different than today? And if so, how is that leader actually going to look different? To find out the answers to my questions, I interviewed CEOs around the world from organizations like Mastercard, Unilever, Audi, Best Buy, Oracle, Kaiser, SAP, Koc Holding, Enel, Carnival Cruise Lines, Dominos, Dunkin’ Brands, National Grid and many others. I also teamed up with LinkedIn and we surveyed 14,000 employees around the world. And this gave me a very good picture around what the future leader is gonna look like. And what I found out from these interviews was that most of the top CEOs around the world believe that while there are going to be some attributes that remain the same for leaders of the future-- things like being able to create a vision and execute on strategy-- they also believe that business leaders are going to need to arm themselves with a new set of skills and mindsets in order to stay relevant. Why do they need a new set of skills and mindsets? It's because our organizations are going to look fundamentally different over the next 10 years than they do now because of technology and artificial intelligence, because of things like purpose and meaning that employees care about, globalization, the changing nature of talent, etc... And because our organizations are going to look different, it makes sense that we are going to need a new type of leader to guide and lead these organizations over the next 10 years and beyond. So what I created after interviewing all these CEOs is something that I call The Notable Nine, a collection of four mindsets and five skills that leaders of the future will need to succeed. The four mindsets are: The Explorer: This includes practicing curiosity, being a perpetual or lifelong learner, having agility and nimbleness in your way of thinking, having a growth mindset, and being open-minded. The Chef: As a future leader, in 2030 and beyond, you are going to have to balance ingredients, and there are two ingredients that you as a future leader are going to have to balance. The first ingredient is technology and the second ingredient is being purpose-driven and caring. The Global Citizen: As a leader you must think globally and embrace diversity The Servant: Leaders need to know how to serve their team, serve their customers, serve their leaders, and serve themselves. There is more to being a servant leader than we usually talk about The five skills are: The Futurist: Making sure that you can think in terms of possibilities and scenarios. Yoda: This one is all about emotional intelligence--specifically empathy and self-awareness The Translator: Listening and communicating with all of the channels that you have access to--email, video chats, text messaging, Slack, Facebook at Work, etc…. The Coach: You need to believe that your job as a leader is to help make other people more successful than you are The Technology Teenager: Leaders must be tech savvy and digitally fluent just as today’s teenagers are These are the four mindsets and five skills I want you to teach your team, to everybody in your organization. That's it. Four mindsets, five skills. If you can do this and teach others these things, I'm very confident that you will become a future ready leader and you will be successful. “The #1 way to combat overwhelm is to be in action.” - MK “Overwhelm keeps you disconnected, keeps you playing small and keeps you doubting yourself.” “Get out of overwhelm by taking immediate action. Get out of your head and get into your body. Go back to your breath.” In this episode, Melissa Kathryn dives straight into how to overcome overwhelm. This is a special series of Episodes in which Melissa Kathryn shares the spotlight with her client Rose from her Weight Loss For Life group, to share about her challenges and triumphs this past year, as she embarked on her journey to wholeness. Rose is an RN specializing in Palliative Care and is beginning to coach individual’s as an End of Life consultant on the heals of a major loss in her life which is shared more deeply in this episode. Melissa explores with Rose how her weight impacted her creative work and reveals the rebirthing journey over the nine month program of Weight Loss for Life. Rose shares her old identity vs. her identity now- she now knows her worth and no longer has to question that. This week on the Wholeness Podcast, Melissa dives into inner child work, breaking down 3 simple forms for you to do this work on your own. Healing our inner child, connecting with her and partnering with her in our lives, are one of the most profound aspects of inner work we can do to heal, breakthrough and transcend limiting beliefs, hardships and any unhealed elements in our lives and from our past that are impacting our present. Melissa Kathryn emphasizes that this is some of the most profound work you can do in terms of your inner healing and understanding the depth of who you are. She shares her background on this topic through her study of psychology and self development, while coaching herself with some of the best of the best in these fields.” She begins by painting a visual from a movie, Four Christmases with Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, which sets the stage to explore woundedness, coping mechanisms and relational triggers this holiday season. Melissa shares the importance of healing from childhood situations that caused us to feel pain and sadness. If not, we will continue to relive those experiences and respond accordingly even as adults. The inner child will show up at different stages and ages during pivotal points of our life which will trigger those core wounding responses. She then explains why and how cultivating a relationship with your inner child will get to the root of negative thinking and repeat patterns. Melissa challenges you to journal (similarly to channeled writing), meditate or do a chair exercise as healing modalities to provide you with a deeper connection with yourself and to cultivate a relationship with your inner child beyond the subconscious level of the “fight or flight” response. As you do this, she invites you to identify patterns and discover the very first time you began to feel those primary feelings at a young age and were left to your own devices. Through identifying these primary limiting beliefs that are blocking you, understanding the feelings associated with that belief and letting it go, you will become whole and free. She then walks you through how each exercise works. In conclusion, Melissa explains how unhealed wounding manifests and that as you cultivate this connection while tackling limiting beliefs, you will open up the world to your healing, experience the depths of love in a greater capacity than you’ve ever known, and develop trust in yourself which will be powerful for you. Your child is escalating quickly and you have a pretty good idea where this is headed. You know the scenario...the anger turns to screaming, which then becomes a full-blown tantrum. Pretty soon your child hits YOU. In today’s episode Stacy Bellward and Jim Jackson interview Lynne Jackson, OTR as she helps to answer the question: “What should I do when my child is so out of control they hit me?!” She draws on her occupational therapy knowledge to help us understand how brain function impacts this tough dilemma. The quick answer: Work to figure out and verbalize what your child’s hands are trying to say. If their mouth could say it, their hands wouldn’t need to. If it continues, try to find the most loving way possible to keep everyone physically safe. In this podcast we’ll explore this common scenario based on the Connected Families framework: FOUNDATION: You are safe with me. What’s going on in you? Are you responding back with anger because you are embarrassed or ashamed? (“What is wrong with this kid?!”) Instead, step away with calming thoughts like: “This is normal.” or “These emotions are too big for my child." CONNECT: You are loved no matter what. Heartfelt, sincere empathy is very powerful. State what your child is feeling and wanting. COACH: You are capable… of using your words to solve problems. Help your child with the messy process of gradually learning respectful self-advocacy as you teach emotional awareness outside of conflict times. CORRECT: You are responsible for your actions. Help your child choose a way to use their hands to restore the connection in the relationship.
