One Big Problem. Preacher: Noah Soistmann June 30, 2021 Main idea - Our own sinfulness stands between us and true life. (vv. 15-18) In our flesh we cannot desire to do what is good. (vv.19-25) Sin needs to be viewed appropriately. Questions: Do you feel like you are currently trying to find life in places that will only bring disappointment? Do you remember your life before Jesus? What did you think about sin during that time? Do you ever view sin as not a big deal or only a minor issue? What does this text show us about the reality of our sin? Is there any sin that you need to turn from today? What encouragement do you get from the truth of verse 1 of Romans 8?

READ: Acts 4.29-30 NLT “And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Having been ordered to keep quiet by the Jewish council, Peter and John returned to their Christian friends to update them. Their response was to pray, and what a beautiful prayer it is. You would have understood if they had asked God to sort out their opponents, but they didn't. They simply asked God for more boldness so that they could continue their ministry and they prayed for yet more miraculous signs and wonders. The pressure of the authorities wasn't going to silence them for a moment. I have had the privilege of meeting with a number of Christians who have suffered greatly for their faith. During the communist era I remember speaking with a Romanian Christian leader who had been repeatedly threatened by the secret police. We knew that we were being followed throughout our visit and so went to a secret location to hear his story away from prying eyes and ears. In Pakistan I recall meeting a man who had been rejected by his family and thrown out of his village when he became a Christian. He had been threatened with death if he returned. I have so much respect for those who have had to exhibit real courage and boldness to maintain their Christian witness. Such threats are not typical of our society, but it still requires considerable boldness to speak up for Jesus when people are instinctively suspicious and even nervous of those who have strong religious convictions. We have probably all felt the temptation to say nothing just in case our Christian beliefs are misunderstood or misinterpreted. We need to pray for godly boldness so that we speak up for the Lord, whatever the reaction. QUESTIONS: Do you consider that you need more boldness to speak about your faith? PRAYER: Loving God, help me to share the Good News with grace and boldness. Amen

Depression is a serious mental illness that affects most of us at some point in our lives through our friends, loved ones, or personally. Lots of folks have some experience of depression during their teen years, but what if that depths-of-the-ocean kraken never went away? What if there was an ongoing lingering threat that you could slip back into it at any time? My experience of depression has been sort of like that, an ongoing, cyclic struggle with depression that’s worse in the winter and then a little easier to manage when I’m out in the sun. I cope with therapy, UV light treatment, meds, and a host of strategies implemented from therapy. Currently, my depression is peeking through all of that as it’s January. Friends on meds have suggested I increase my dose in the winter, which is a great idea. Today, I have one of my older friends, wicked, on the show. Her experience with depression isn’t that different from mine, but I’ll let her tell you about it herself. What have been your experiences and symptoms of depression as a teenager? How has it changed with age as you’ve grown and what is your experience of depression now? How have your self-perceptions of failure or success impacted your depression? (Thinking styles that don’t serve us, CBT) What’s your gender? How has gender stuff impacted your depression?

I am someone who thrives on creating a vision, starting things, and putting my all in to get them going so others can carry them forward. I am a very curious person by nature, and I love to brainstorm lots of ideas and decide which I should test out and which I should let go. I am a creative person too and I really love gardening. It nourishes my creative, visionary spirit. When I start plants from seed, I never truly know what results I will get. I never plant the same exact thing twice in the same place from year to year. So, I take a risk that it may look great or not so much. But that is okay as I learn from my mistakes and the beautiful accidents, I get are well worth it! I am always rewarded with a beautiful garden oasis that has its own unique personality each year. This is the spirit that I bring to my coaching and my business and equestrian clients, meeting them where they are and supporting them in finding who they genuinely want to be. I brainstorm with them and help them find their vision and give themselves permission to make a change. I then help support them in developing their curiosity, creativity, and confidence to start and run successful businesses or make positive changes in their riding. I bring my mindfulness training to help clients learn to pause, be more present and connect to their inner selves. What a perfect fit this is for me and my clients! I get to be part of creating new things and finding new visions on a regular basis. I support my clients in a process that is easy for me but maybe not so easy for them. Just like with my garden I plant some seeds and offer support and allow the unique beauty of my clients shine through! I offer one-on-one coaching, group coaching, workshops and speaking opportunities. OUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST BLOG SERIES MESSAGE 1 – WHO ARE YOU? It Is Not About Me It Is About Him and What He Has Done For me (He gave me a new life and identity) 7/12/2020 8:28:07 AM We live in a world today that is filled with constant attacks on our identity in a variety of ways. Covid -19 Mob Protestors -Hate Crimes-Abortions- The list goes on. I will be doing a 6-part blog on this Our Identity In Christ I have a service I bought into a few years ago that I hope that I would never have to use which is called “Lexington Law and All Clear ID”. Now, this isn't an advertisement for them, however I had to use them for I was a victim of identity theft 3 times, decides they did provide some backup to help get me out of that mess. I guess one doesn't really know if it works until you need them and I had too, and it did provide some sense of security. In addition, the Word of God lets us know there is one part of Satan's work that he does his best at and that is to be “the accuser of the brethren” yet we can see that one day he will be dealt with for all of eternity: Revelation 12:10 (NKJV) 10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. I'm glad for that day that will come soon, but for now, we know that the enemy's desire is to trip you up in your mind by making you feel like you are “less than” when God has declared that you are “more than”! Most of the accusations coming from the enemy try to convince us that we aren't who God says we are, and in fact, never will be! I've been going back and forth as to if I should share a series of blogs messages on “Our Identity in Christ” and as I watched the movie “Overcomer” with my wife awhile back , it served as a confirmation that indeed the time is now to share this Series with you and will most likely consist of about 6 messages as follows: Message 1 – Who Are You? Message 2 – More Than a “Work” Message 3 – More Than a Servant Message 4 – More Than Chosen Message 5 – More Than Crucified Message 6 – More Than a Conqueror Throughout this Series, we are going to be sharing many scriptures that bring out the truth that we are IN CHRIST and CHRIST IS IN US! For now, I want to read 2 Scriptures that share this powerful truth: 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Colossians 1:27 (NKJV) – 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. WE MUST KNOW WHO WE ARE If you have seen the movie “Overcomer” then you have been blessed to watch a movie that is powerful and inspirational. If you have not seen it, then I encourage you to go watch it, or at least get the DVD or check to see if it is on Vudu. And by the way, bring your tissues as it will grab you by the emotions and not let go too quickly. (yes, I got teary eyed) There is a scene within the movie that hit home when I watched it and I have no doubt, it did with you as well and I wanted to play it for you now. (check the link below) Keep in mind that the man lying in the hospital bed is blind, and since many of you haven't seen the movie, I don't want to give his story away. Yet he asks a question that each one of us need to consider in our own lives. PLAY MOVIE CLIP – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgqaGu9KlDw&list=PL1xkCp_xGsnrMQCOn-RNytRDBqsvP9-yR&index=7&t=0s If I were to walk around the sanctuary today asking each one of you this question “Who Are You”, then I imagine I would receive quite a variety of answers. We are much better at asking this question of people “So what do you do”? I get it that it's a great way to open a conversation with people but “what people do” doesn't really define who they are! I was asked the other day by someone in the church if they knew what someone else in the church who has attended here for years does for work, and while I was a bit embarrassed I didn't know, at least I was happy that I know them for more than “what they do”. Of course, I know what many of you do for work, but I would encourage you to never let that be what determines “who you are”. Never allow that to be the measure of other people as well! The statement that was made in this clip is powerful: “Your identity will be tied to whatever you give your heart to” We are going to get to this point later in the message, but when we know “who” we are, then we will find it far easier to find out “why” we are. If we begin to realize that the “who” we have become is out of line with the Word of God, then there is nothing so important as getting back in that place we need to be. I'm going to take a moment to be a bit transparent with you and perhaps you can relate a bit to what I'm about to say. There are times in my life I talk to myself- (a lot). I'm sorry, but that's just the case. No, I haven't really started to answer and I'm hoping that doesn't happen thanks be to God. I'm not the healthiest person I have several medical conditions to include PTSD, at times I feel incredibly sad that I'm not able to do the things I want to do with my family, or afraid something might trigger my PTSD. Here's my “confession” during these moments – I will say under my breath “What a dummy, what a loser you served in the military and cannot even walk a half a mile” – Almost immediately a conviction comes into my spirit that those are words I shouldn't be saying because eventually, I might just believe it! Proverbs 23:7 King James Version (KJV)7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. There's nobody here today that enjoys criticism, but I've found that the one who is harder on me than anyone else, is myself! To be honest, I think we get in the way of God getting through to us about who we are in Him more than anyone else! Together we are going to learn some powerful things throughout the Series of WHO we are in Christ and realize that there is a purpose for the Believer in knowing this. Please keep me in prayer as I work on this blog It changes our outlook on the past, present and future! 1 John 3:2 (NKJV) 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Not only do we need to Know Who We Are: WE MUST REMEMBER WHO WE WERE Now, before you begin to think this is a bad thing and that I'm encouraging you to stay anchored to your past, please know that it's a good thing to remember who we were so that we aren't tempted to repeat that in our lives. Ephesians 2:11-12 (NKJV) 11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh--who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands. 12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. While this scripture might seem that it doesn't relate to us today as we often don't even think about the fact that we are Gentiles who have been invited into this great covenant of promise given to the Jewish people, but in fact, this is the case! Look and Listen to what Paul and Barnabas told the believers in the early church:' Acts 13:46 (NKJV) 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. When they said “spoken to you first” meant that the Gospel or Good News of Jesus Christ was shared with the Jewish people first, but since they (for the most part) rejected it, then the Gospel was being opened up to the Gentiles which includes most, if not all of us here today! But he told them to remember something as we can see in verse 12 and that is that they “had no hope” and were “without God in the world”! Paul didn't just tell them to forget about the fact that they used to be hopeless, but he told them to remember it as we read in Eph. 2:11 – “Therefore Remember” Often, we can't really appreciate the blessings we have now without realizing what we didn't have before knowing Christ! There's a song Brenda has sung called “It's My Desire” to live for Jesus and the lyrics go like this: “If you could see where Jesus brought me from and where I am today, then you would know the reason why I love Him so” I've never quite understood why people turn their backs on God only to go back to a life of hopelessness – Perhaps they were told the lie that the Christian life is one of total bliss without problems, instead of the fact that we do indeed have problems, but at least now we have a wonderful Savior to walk the journey with us! Paul makes sure that this reality is not just skipped over or ignored so they can get to the reality of - Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. He recognizes that one of the best ways to appreciate the nearness of Christ is that we take some time to remember how far away we were from Christ! This is why I believe in the tremendous value of having groups like Teen Challenge in to share not only where they are now, but also how far they've come. They often share testimonies not to glorify the past, but to appreciate their present and future even more! Also, to give warning to those who might think a life of sin is the way to go. In a couple of month we will go through another Anniversary of the terrible attack on America we often refer to as 9-11 – As the years go by and we get farther away from the attack, there is a tendency to forget about that day so we often hear these words “Remember 9-11”. Why would we be encouraged to remember something that was such a tragic event? Not just to appreciate the freedom we have now, but to also make sure we don't repeat mistakes that led up to 9-11 in the first place! I believe it's especially important that we remember where we were without Christ! I realize that may be more difficult for some such as those of us who grew up in the Church, but I pray the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the “hopelessness” there was and continues to be without Christ! We are told in Ephesians 2:12 to “remember” but we are told by the same writer, Paul the Apostle in Philippians 3:13 to “forget” - Philippians 3:13 (NKJV) 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, The context of this scripture in Philippians 3 is that he had gained tremendous knowledge of Christ in the past and had victory after victory. Yet, the idea is that he would not settle on those accomplishments but that he would press on for more of what God had available for him. In other words, while he was satisfied with what Christ had done for him, he knew there was more to have, and he was willing to leave it all behind to reach forward to the great things ahead! Remember the past, but don't be overcome by the past! Your past should not determine your future! Even your past victories are nothing in comparison to your future victories! I believe that if we KNOW WHO WE ARE, and REMEMBER WHO WE WERE, it will also help us as: WE MUST KNOW WHY WE ARE John 15:16 (NKJV) 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. Jesus chose these disciples and appointed them to spread the gospel and bear fruit for God's kingdom. The Lord chooses each believer to be a branch in the Vine—a branch that bears fruit that will last. The remaining, or lasting, fruit means either new believers whose faith perseveres, or the enduring quality of the fruit of the Spirit—especially brotherly love. I may not know much about growing and harvesting apples, but this I do know. If I were to plant an apple tree and it grew to the point that it could soon produce apples, and I decided that I wanted to cut one of the branches off, put it in a planter in my house so I could watch the apples grow, it just wouldn't happen! Why? Because at the point it was separated from the tree, it lost its purpose. It was no longer a branch that would bear fruit and it wouldn't matter how much you watered it or talked to it. The purpose was for it to bear fruit and the ONLY way it could happen was by staying attached to the tree where it would be nourished and fed. You and I are called to produce fruit, and fruit that remains. In other words, as Disciples of Christ, we are called to produce more Disciples of Christ. In addition, we are to get involved in Kingdom work, and do our best to involve others in Kingdom work. We can be involved in a lot of things and those things may be good things, but are they going to produce fruit for the Kingdom of God? John 15:4-5 (NKJV) 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. This relationship with Christ goes both ways. When we abide in Him, and He abides in us, then the natural (or supernatural result) is that we will bear much fruit! While we all have been called to bear fruit, God uses each one of us in a different way to accomplish the task. We don't all bear fruit the same way, but the important thing is that we are staying connected to the vine! If you read the entire passage of John 15:1-7 it mentions the word “abide” a total of 8 times. The word “abide” comes from the Greek Word “meno” which means “to stay connected to, immerse yourself in, draw upon, rely upon, depend upon” – In other words, just like the Son could do nothing apart from the Father of eternal value, so you and I cannot function to our full capacity without staying connected to the Vine (Jesus). Again, your specific “why” is most likely different than anyone else around you, but your general “why” is that you bear fruit! I pray that you will experience fulfillment and joy like never before as you know and understand your “why”. As you function in God's perfect plan and will for YOUR life and realize with Him “in you” and “you in Him” tremendous things will be accomplished for the Kingdom! How do we abide in Christ? Prayer or communicating with Christ Reading the Word – Allowing Him to communicate with us (Don't always be looking for “a word”, when you can go to “the Word” Attend Church Faithfully The Bible says in: John 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. It is interesting that the Lord moves away from “Abide in me, and I in you” that we see earlier in John 15, and he says now, “if my words abide in you” – It's important to know that when we truly abide in Christ and allow His words to abide in us that we are going to be so full of the presence of God that the farthest thing from our minds will be asking for “things” that we believe will finally make us happy. When we have the mind of Christ, we recognize that like Jesus, souls coming to Him and doing the Will of the Father will be bread and water for our hungry and thirsty souls. John 4:34 (NKJV) 34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. While I believe we serve a God who wants to meet our needs, and He does when we obey Him, He knows that when His words abide in us, we want to do His will more than our own! Questions: - Do you need to know Christ today as Savior? - Do you struggle at times against the accusations of the enemy? - Do you need to take hold of God's promises about your future?

It’s the time of year for priest re-assignments, and on this episode, Bishop explains the changes taking place for several parishes across our Diocese…. as well as how those decisions are made. Then Bishop continues his series on the Matriarchs of the Old Testament…this time, he focuses on Leah and Rachel, the wives of Jacob. It’s quite the story. The show wraps up with Bishop answering listener-submitted questions. Questions: • Do you find it harder to evangelize to those who are indifferent about the faith as opposed to those who are staunchly against it? How can we spread the faith to those who just don’t seem to care about religion? • Is it appropriate to say an illness is God’s will? Or is it more accurate to say that God is allowing the illness to happen? • Can you talk about the difference between forgiveness in a relationship versus reconciling a relationship? In other words, I understand the importance of forgiving people who have hurt me, but am I obligated to resume the relationship with that person? • What are some books you would recommend for a Catholic high school english class? • If humans are born with an inclination to sin, why are we encouraged to reproduce when it just increases the amount of sin in the world? • While there is a lot of talk about young adults leaving the Church, I have also noticed a lot of young people who are very passionate about their faith. What can they do to take their faith to the next level? • Do you think the saints feel emotions in heaven? In other words, do they feel sad when they see family and friends struggling on earth? Or feel happy when they see us succeed? • If you could choose one saint to be your spiritual advisor, who would it be?

Is Jesus Calling? A Spiritual Guide to Discerning Your Vocational Call with Fr. Paul Hoesing - episode 2: The First Spiritual Lesson: You Must Follow Christ. "Discovering one's vocation is not a navel-gazing, self-focused, psychological exercise. It's not about a man figuring something out. It is not about solving a confusing puzzle." Questions: Where have you encountered Christ? Where do you experience his loving presence now for you? Where do you feel consciously blessed and grateful for what God has done for you? The Second Spiritual Lesson: Learn to desire what God desires for you. “All you need is to desire whatever God may desire for you. Remaining true to this desire opens your heart to receive what God wants for you. Then, God Himself will take care of you.” Questions: Do you trust that God always wants what is best for you? Where do you begin to become afraid of giving God permission to lead you? When do you begin to try to manipulate God to want what you think will make you happy? When that happens, simply say over and over again inside of yourself to the Father, ‘Father, I give you permission to lead me!’ Or ‘Father, I desire your goodness to me.’ Or, ‘Father, I trust you’” The post IJCY2-Is Jesus Calling You with Fr. Justyn continued our series on Moses, looking specifically at God's presence. The Hebrew word for presence is Face, which implying a close and personal encounter with the Lord. Face to face is close! Firstly we want him, because He wants us. Activity then comes out from this place. 1. It’s Relationship - From Genesis to Revelation it’s about God wanting relationship and intimacy with us His people. Exodus 19:6 shows God’s plan for us all to have direct access with Him. Exodus 20:18-21 shows how fear stop the people of Israel stepping into the fulfilment of this. 2. It’s Central - Exodus 33:12-17. His presence is a sign of the favour we have. It’s distinctive for the people of God. God is always present, are we present with him? 3. It’s can’t be limited - don’t try to define or recreate what encountering His presence is like. Moses went from a burning bush to an encounter with the glory of God where even he couldn’t enter the tabernacle. Don’t settle, or focus on how God meets with others. We are all unique. 4. It’s for you - in our corporate and individual gatherings the priority is intimacy with Him. We should have expectations of signs and wonders as that is what happens when the King comes. The reality of His kingdom breaks out. We need to first value His presence, not what he will do. Activity - Spend time just worshiping and enjoying God. Have no other agenda than enjoying Him, and don’t rush into asking! Questions - Do you believe that God is always present and always wanting intimacy with you? - What stops you being ‘present’ with God in the day to day activities of life? - Are there any ‘fears’ that stop you from stepping into greater intimacy with the Father? - The cloud and pillar of fire where symbols of God’s presence and they led God’s people. We have his voice leading and directing us as His sons & daughters. What is he saying to you, dreams being stirred up?

Where are you in regards to achieving all of your goals? So, goal filing, how is this different to just setting goals?

Welcome to the 18th episode of Pulpit To Pew. Reverend Beverly Gibson and Johnny Gwin weigh many topics, including the pervasive and addictive nature of technology in our current society as well as the importance of escaping that technology. They also discuss the idea of taking inventory and analyzing the illusions and mindsets (shackles) that can block us from understanding others, positively moving forward and staying focused on your mission. Bonus: Reverend Gibson shares that see is not a "Goody Two Shoes". Questions: > Do we have the freedom to shatter those illusions and perspectives that distract us from our gifts, relationships with others and God? > What shackles do you have in your life? > How can I shatter my shackles and move forward on the right path? > How do I want others to see? > Are we willing to be brave enough to "break our shackles" and follow Jesus, now? Readings: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14 Galatians 5:1,13-25 Luke 9:51-62 What you will hear: > There may be some things we are shackled to that might be leading us on a path that we shouldn't be on. > Distancing yourself from devices and perceptions that shackle and distract you from your gifts and your true path. > Rigid perspectives & mindsets can harm us and cloud the truth > The dangers of unexamined assumptions > How your occupation and interests shape the way you see the world > The "grooves" of our lives > Confronting your illusions > Elijah & Elisha lesson explained > Paul's letter to the Galatians explained > Flesh vs. the fruit of the Spirit > The Vulcan view of diversity > Letting go of my perspectives and mindsets > Iceberg analogy of what people know and see > Watch out for the manipulators in the world > Hardcore Zen book reference - "Question everything and everyone" > The hypocrisy of punk rock conformity > Toni Morrison - Claiming the permission to succeed > The importance of compassion and empathy with relationships > Explanation of "anyone that looks back can not fit in the Kingdom of God" What do you think about Pulpit To Pew? Wednesday, April 10, 2013 700 years before Isaiah the prophet wrote prophecies concerning Jesus 700 years before he was born in Bethlehem. Listen to the prophet foretell of Jesus' suffering. All passages quoted today are from the New Living Translation. Isaiah 49:15-16 NLT “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins. Isaiah 50:5-7 NLT The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me, and I have listened. I have not rebelled or turned away. I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I did not hide my face from mockery and spitting. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame. Isaiah 52:13-14 NLT See, my servant will prosper; he will be highly exalted. But many were amazed when they saw him. His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human, and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man. Isaiah 53:2-12 NLT My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people. He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave. But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels. ____________________________________ 1 Peter 1:20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days. Ephesians 1:4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. Luke 24:25-27 NLT Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. ____________________________________ Isaiah describes in detail the events around the crucifixion of Jesus. We should not be surprised at this because the Bible is clear that all along it has been God's plan for Jesus to die for our sins. Jesus himself repeatedly tells his disciples he must suffer and die. (Matthew 16:21, 17:12, 20:22, Luke 9:22, 12:50, 17:25, 22:15,42, Mark 8:31, 9:12, 10:38, John 18:11) Conclusions - - God keeps his promises. God's plan for Jesus is plan "A" not a plan "B". God wants his people to know what his plans are in advance. Jesus claimed to be the Messiah foretold by Isaiah's prophecies. Jesus is the focus of the Bible, the events of human history, and God's plans. Jesus asks us to follow him in being obedient to God's plans even in suffering. Jesus set the example to follow. Salvation and forgiveness for sin are found in Jesus. You can trust God's plans. You should read the Bible to understand God's plans. Questions -- Do you believe the Bible? Do you trust God to work out his sovereign plan in your life? Do you believe Jesus is the suffering servant foretold 700 years before by the prophet Isaiah? Do you trust Jesus as your saviour and the only one who can forgive your sin? How are you following Jesus? What about your life shows you are suffering in obedience to the Father? Why would anyone think you are following Jesus?
Beginners. Today was a very special day here in the U.S. Do you know what the special occasion was? It was the inauguration of the 44th President, Barack Hussein Obama. It is a time of excitement. Everybody wants to see changes. We all wonder what Obama will do. Will he change the politics in Washington? Will the economy improve? Who knows? Time will tell. The inaugural ceremony is an important tradition. It is a huge celebration; a time to welcome the new President and to say goodbye to the previous one. Do you think that George W. Bush is sad to leave the Oval office and to retire? Perhaps. I think that it must be a relief to retire after being in such an important position for eight years. Phew! It makes me feel tired just thinking about it! Grammar notes. Useful vocabulary: inauguration, ceremony, celebration, to retire, the President, politics. Questions: Do you know what the special occasion was? Exs: Do they know what the problem with the car was? Why don't you tell me what the problem is? Do you think that he is sad? Do you think I look fat in this dress? Don't you think (that) it is time to go? * the word 'that' is optional. Advanced. Yesterday and today were auspicious and significant days for U.S. history. Yesterday was Martin Luther King day. It is a national holiday to celebrate that great civil rights leader who forged a deeper, more equitable national conscience about civil justice. And today was the inauguration of Barack Obama. What a tremendous ceremony and celebration it was. Talk about expectation and hope becoming almost physical as the event took place. High hopes have been placed on the shoulders of the new President. But, does he represent more than racial progress in this country? One would hope so. The economy needs to turn around before too many become unemployed. Is this achievable in one term of office? Obama said throughout his presidential campaign that it would take years to correct the underlying errors of government that have led to this financial crisis. This seems to be the main concern; it is uppermost on people's minds. The health service and national security are also huge issues that will be dealt with. I cannot even begin to imagine how taxing and exhausting the job of President must be, especially if you are a person of conscience. How could you detatch yourself sufficiently from work to remain sane, yet remain in-touch and sensitive enough to be an effective change maker? There is no doubt that Obama faces huge challenges, but hopefully he has the strength of character needed to meet those challenges honestly. Grammar notes. Useful vocabulary: auspicious, significant, equitable, conscience, achievable, underlying errors, uppermost, issue, sensitive, in-touch, exhausting.
Beginners. Some people say that the weather is changing all over the world. Do you believe that? What do you think? I'm not sure if it is true, but sometimes the local weather does something unusual. Here in Wenatchee, the weather is normally very regular: very hot Summers, very cold, snowy Winters, and short warm Springs and Autumns. No shocks, no surprises. Well, this year has been a little different. A couple of weeks ago, a warm wind blew up from Hawaii. It blew all night. For twenty-four hours, all you could hear was the woosh of the wind and 'drip, drip, drip' of melting snow. The grass and bushes are green again, and we have had no new snow. Instead, a thick fog has appeared. For some days it has been so thick that the traffic has had to move very slowly. It is quite a change for this town; everybody is talking about it. My dog is happy because she can go for walks without getting icy paws. It is a relief for local pets, but you drivers be careful! Grammar notes. Questions: Do you believe that/ this? Exs: Can you believe it? Don't you believe me? Verbs: This year has been very different. Exs: This year has been the best so far for the corn harvest. She has been ill for three months. All the castles in France have been renovated. To have to. Exs: I have to study more. I had to clean the kitchen last night. You will have to wait. They had to practice for the concert all year. We have had to fix the floor several times. Useful vocab and expressions: people say that, normally, a couple of, instead, it's a relief, be careful! Advanced. Having lived in London, I am quite used to fog. Please don't think that it is always foggy, though. There are plenty of days when the air is perfectly clear and sunny. Also, because it rains often in England, the air after the rain is quite clear. Because England was a large producer of coal, it was burned in every city. The mixture of smoke and fog would make what is called 'smog' or 'pea soup'. In 1956, however, a Clean Air Act was passed which prohibited the burning of coal in public areas. Consequently, London's air is much cleaner. Also the buildings have been cleaned of the dark residue that had been left by the coal smoke. I have been to some countries where there is still smog in certain cities: Los Angeles has bad smog, and so does Mexico City. Fog, on the other hand, is not a health threat. It is simply another type of precipitation. Actually, I think that it is a beautiful phenomena. It certainly conjures up ideas of mystery and romance. Perhaps that is why so many great writers and poets have come from England..... Grammar notes. Verbs: Having + past participle. Exs: Having lived in Dubai, she has a great understanding of Arabic culture. Having found the fossil, they preceeded to clean and examine it. Useful expressions: consequently, a phenomena, another type/kind of, to conjure up, coal, smog, precipitation, fog/ foggy.
