Holy crap - we are almost celebrating a year of podcasting! As Melissa and Siria enter their fourth quarter (Q4) as podcasters, they recap the last 13 episodes - sharing what stood out, their personal highlights, and their intentions for the next year.
Melissa Davey's story is simply a delight. What is the probability that a 65 year-old successful insurance executive has a chance encounter with a world renowned film director and then is inspired to make her own movie? Just how happenstance led Melissa to create her Second Act would make a great movie script. Her story is one of inspiration and her advice is to always take the detour in life. Now 71, Melissa completed her moving documentary, Beyond Sixty and is inspiring tens of thousands of older people. The film is about the fascinating lives and accomplishments of women in their 60's, 70's and beyond. As Melissa says, "The film brings women's voices forward...and there is still have much time left to do new things." Her story inspired Carl to pursue making his own documentary, a lifelong dream of his. Melissa Smith is the CEO of Wex Inc. a provider of payment processing and information management services in the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They have around 5,000 employees and under Melissa’s leadership the company has gone from $50 million to $1.7 billion in revenue. Melissa began at Wex Inc. in 1997 as a senior financial analyst and she worked her way up to being CFO and then President of the Americas before becoming CEO. A lot of things in the world have been changed by Covid-19. The way organizations operate, the way employees connect with one another, and even the way leaders have to lead. Melissa Smith, the CEO of Wex Inc., who is responsible for around 5,000 employees around the world says connecting with her people is more important now than ever before. And one important way she does that is through recognizing her people for what they do. She takes time to send handwritten notes to employees who have been promoted, or who have gone above and beyond in a project, or who have volunteered for events in the community. She believes that people need to be recognized with little things like handwritten notes and big things like stock grants. She says it is so important for people to know that their work is recognized and valued. This recognition can actually go both ways. Melissa has been grateful for letters that her employees have been sending her during the pandemic to let her know they appreciate what she does. In fact, she has one employee who sends her a note every single month, and it really means a lot to Melissa. Overcoming internal and external doubt A lot of leaders deal with imposter syndrome at some point or another. In fact, a majority of the leaders I speak with on the Future of Work podcast admit that they have faced internal and external doubt throughout their careers. It just comes with the territory. Leaders are going to have times when they feel they are not right for the job or that they don’t have the skills to complete a task. So how can you overcome those feelings? Melissa says that when it comes to internal doubt it’s all about toning it down. Most likely those thoughts and feelings will never go away completely, but you have to learn to switch that inside voice off. When it comes to external doubt, it is a balancing act. You have to be able to listen to feedback from others and learn to accept constructive criticism. But you also have to be able to recognize if people are just naysayers who question your abilities without reason. For the naysayers you just have to learn how to move on and prove them wrong. Melissa’s experience as a female leader While Melissa doesn’t really think of herself as a female leader, she does recognize that some people will be surprised when they meet her, especially because of the industry she is in, which tends to be male dominant. In fact when she recalls a time when she was the CFO at Wex Inc. and she and the head of investor relations were on a call with an investor and a portfolio manager that Melissa had not yet met. When both sides went to hang up, the other side of the call thought they had hung up but hadn’t. So she heard a part of their conversation. The portfolio manager was saying “The CFO is a chick”. And the investor that Melissa knew responded and said “Yes, but she’s a geek chick”. And then they went on to talk about the answers to questions they had. What she took away from that experience is that people recognize that she is different and they stop to acknowledge that, but at the end of the day what they really care about is the content of what she has to say. They care about performance and results. When asked if she has to work harder or be tougher as a female leader, Melissa says, “It is different, yeah. Clearly it's different. I think the important part, though, is those things happen. But if you allow that to be kind of the central part of your thinking, so if I start with the fact that it's unfair, then you're almost putting your own baggage on top of what's already going to be a little bit more difficult. And so what I think of that is, I would rather not have that in the back of my mind, not have your own mind questioning what you're capable of, on top of what's going to be other people who do perceive that they just can't relate or understand sometimes or how you're capable of doing what you're doing. But that's not for me to own. You know, I think that's for me to a certain extent, to put blinders on and focus on what needs to get done.” The importance of saying yes to opportunities Melissa has given a talk for TEDx and in it she talks about the importance of saying yes to opportunities at work. Career progression, Melissa believes, is in part our own responsibility. It is part your capability, part sponsorship, and part timing. When you say yes to something outside of your normal responsibilities it allows you to get exposure to people you wouldn’t normally have and it shows a set of skills that are different then what you normally use. As Melissa shares, “Often what I was given for assignments that would be outside of my job were things that weren't fun, or, you know, something was broken, or something was happening across some other parts of the planet. And I was being asked to step in and be involved. And I really think that doing that was part of a big part of my career progression, because it again, allowed people to see me in a different light than they would have if I was just, you know, the CFO or the controller or some of the things that I've done in my past.” So if you get the opportunity to do something outside of your job title, or something even a bit outside of your comfort zone, you should definitely consider saying yes. Dealing with failures and mistakes Every single leader deals with failures or mistakes at some point in their career. Melissa says she views these as learning opportunities. We are all constantly learning and evolving, so using these situations to grow and get better is important. Melissa says it is crucial for leaders to create an environment that accepts failures. If people feel like they can’t fail, they are going to be too safe. One thing she has learned is not to put difficult things off for later. As she says, “bad news doesn’t age well”. If there is a hard decision you have to make, or a hard announcement you have to give, do it sooner rather than later. Advice Melissa would give to her younger self If she could go back in time and give herself some advice Melissa says she would tell herself you have the power to impact the way others think and feel by your actions. She says, “When you get older, you realize that everything you do affects the people around you when you know, like it or not. And so you have to be, you know, you have to just be thoughtful about that...you might meet with somebody and for you, that meeting, you know, maybe the last thing that's on your mind, but it may be the most important meeting of the day for that other person. And so kind of taking a deep breath, and being the person you want to be in that moment, is, I think, really important. And something particularly in this pandemic environment. Like, you know, you might be running 100 miles an hour and really thinking about a lot of things. But if you can just take a deep breath and reframe yourself for what you're about to go into it. I think that's really important.”

In this episode, I’m joined by Melissa Platt as she shares the story of how her challenges with hearing loss taught her to truly listen. Melissa is a clinical psychologist and therapist who specializes in helping people heal through complex trauma so they can thrive, and has been living with progressively deteriorating hearing loss since 2010. Her health journey has taken her through many different shifts over the years, including the realization that the track she was on was no longer making her happy. Melissa decided to make a change and pursue her joy, leaving her job as a researcher to open a private practice where she has more space for the reflection and introspection she was craving. As Melissa was going through these major shifts in her hearing loss journey, she started listening to the NWIO podcast and found a community and message she could really resonate with. I had the pleasure of connecting with Melissa through the Shine Your Light mastermind earlier this year, where she tapped into this community and found a place she belonged — a place where she could think creatively and be genuinely curious about her hearing loss. During our talk, Melissa shares how healing it can be to gather strength from media that you resonate with, whether that’s a podcast, guided meditations, books, or online videos. She also gives us a rundown of the polyvagal theory and how it allows her to connect with and gain inspiration from those around her. In this episode, we dive into just how complicated it can be to hold the desire to look at your health challenges in a positive light while also needing to feel the hard feelings that come with chronic illness. Melissa’s story is a study in how our health challenges can be a gift while also highlighting the relief in knowing it’s okay if we’re not ready to see our challenges in that light. In this episode, we talk about how Melissa has been working to integrate both sides of the conversation, as well as how different bodily responses can serve as indicators of resonance. By paying attention to our inner voice and the way our bodies respond, we can start accessing emotions that are harder to get to when we’re on the wrong track. She reminds us that our inner navigation system is always talking to us, and you don’t need perfect hearing to listen.

We talk with Melissa about her journey and what she discovered.
Today’s episode is an interview with Melissa Valder, a woman who grew up in a blended family and is passionate about sharing her story and insights with families now going through the experience themselves. The blended family experience from the child’s point of view offers insight into how our children may process this journey later as adults. As Melissa reflects on her parent’s divorce, remarriages, custody arrangement, and communication, she recognizes the things that impact her still today – both as challenges and strengths. Children learn through their parents and how they handle situations, and the children of blended families are no different. Today, Melissa and I will talk about the challenges she faced growing up in a blended family and what she’d say to her parents of 20 years ago knowing what she knows now. She’ll also give some tips on how to better handle adult conversations, money management involving the kids, and communication with your co-parent – even if you don’t like them. 00:45 – 05:00 - Introducing today’s topic: A child’s experience within a blended family 05:00 – 11:00 - Melissa’s relationship with the members of her blended family 11:00 – 16:00 - The beauty of a step-parent’s role and how your child might feel 16:00 – 21:30 - How Melissa processed the struggles she faced within a blended family 21:30 – 28:00 - The dynamic she witnessed between her parents and step parents 28:00 – 35:00 - Taking care of yourself and the good/bad of custody arrangements 35:00 – 41:30 - Choosing to learn from your experiences whether good or challenging

For women, the idea of strength training is full of misconceptions. Many avoid it for all the wrong reasons. But, as you’re about to hear, training right is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy for the long-term. Today I’m joined by two of my favorite trainers, Melissa Paris, and Lacee Lazoff. They are both StrongFirst certified instructors based in NYC. They take a holistic view of strength in which mind and body are inseparable elements. These two amazing trainers practice what they preach. They train regularly (and I mean almost every day) with the same programs and equipment that they work with their clients. Today we’re talking all about what it means for women to strength train. Specifically, we talk about building and maintaining strength is part of caring for the whole person - body, mind, and soul. As Melissa and Lacee explain, strength training is an essential part of staying healthy for the long-term that can’t be ignored. Throughout this interview, Melissa and Lacee share so many reasons why it’s crucial to train smarter and not harder. They break down the importance of forming good habits and not being taken in by the current fads in exercise. You’ll hear how to make training part of your regular practice along with effective self-care so that you’ll stay fit and healthy for life. How do you incorporate self-care into your training? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page! In this episode: How strength training can only really happen when the whole person is being cared for and addressed The many reasons why every woman should strength train as part of a program Why consistency is one of the most important parts of training and how to make it a part of your practice Why performing better reps are so much better and healthier than simply doing more reps Effective kettlebell alternatives to popular but less effective exercises Shifting perspectives away from focusing mostly on aesthetics towards focusing on overall health How and why to incorporate self-care into your daily practices Quotes: “I don’t think that people can make real strides in developing their physical strength until they really have a hold on their goals, who they are, and consistency in their habits. All those things go hand-in-hand.” [1:55] “I think a lot of women when they’re in their 20s and 30s need to start looking at it like, I need to take care of myself in a way that the magazines aren’t telling me to do because they’re only focused on aesthetics.” [11:52] “It’s not easy, but it [looks easy] because we’re conscious of our movement now and we’re conscious of our programs. And it just comes with being a professional at it and doing it every day.” [28:18] “When you don’t sleep enough, your cortisol level rises. So it’s really hard to lose weight or to maintain any lean muscle mass that you have if you’re not sleeping properly.” [43:42] Links: Find Melissa Paris online Follow Melissa on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest Find Lacee Lazoff online Follow Lacee on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter NEOU Fitness Hub The Joe Rogan Experience Broken Brain Podcast Check out the full show notes for this episode here Urban Wellness Clinic Follow Emily & Urban Wellness on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube

In the Season One Finale of JUST THE TIP-STERS, Melissa is joined on the phone by Michelle Kramer Joe - whose son - Cody Turner - disappeared without a trace in July 2015 after going out for the night and never returning to his grandparents' home in Yakima, Washington. Michelle has spent the last three years struggling to keep Cody's name in the forefront of police and the press, both of which she believes have never given their full attention to the case due to the stigma attached to Cody's drug and alcohol abuse. As Melissa points out in her discussion with Michelle, it DOES NOT MATTER what sort of mistakes one has made in life - NO ONE deserves to be forgotten and EVERYONE's life has meaning. Join Melissa as she closes out 2018 with a heart- wrenching plea from a mother for clues that might lead to finding her son. JUST THE TIP-STERS/SEASON TWO DEBUTS ON JANUARY 8, 2019.

There are roughly 4.5 billion apps that proclaim they’ll help you manage and schedule your social media, but there’s one in particular that is really piquing the interest of graphic designers: Tailwind. A social media scheduling app that allows you to post to Pinterest and Instagram, two very important platforms for interior designers, Tailwind is a key tool for those who are doing their own social media. So today on the podcast Darla and Natalie are talking to Melissa Megginson, the community manager of Tailwind, who describes her job as being there to make sure Tailwind’s users look good and are having success on Pinterest and Instagram. How you can use Tailwind for your interior design business Posting to Pinterest and Instagram is essential for interior designers’ marketing efforts, but it takes a TON of time. As Melissa tells us on this week’s episode, Tailwind allows you to schedule your pins from your computer, from your blog, wherever it’s most convenient, and allows you to post directly to Instagram as well. One of Tailwind’s greatest features is what Darla calls its “magical fairy dust algorithm” (™) which allows users to see when the most effective times to post are, and then the app schedules your pins and posts to those times. The Smart Schedule looks at your PInterest and Instagram followers and when they’re on the most often, allowing you to increase your visibility. It lets you get that 5 to 10 pins a day, at least, in front of your followers’ eyes. Create an aesthetic on Pinterest Pinterest can be huge for interior designers, but one thing a lot of designers struggle with is content. Whether you’re new, or you haven’t been thinking of content online for years, you may not have hundreds of photos or blog posts to share. That’s why Melissa recommends thinking of Pinterest as a magazine rather than a catalog. Build an aesthetic that people will be interested in on Pinterest, rather than just showing your own work. Melissa is a wealth of knowledge about how to get the most of your Pinterest and Instagram, and one of the fascinating things she says is that it’s best for your Pinterest to not just be your own work. As she says, a representative from Pinterest recommended that you split about 50/50 between your content and other people’s content that you find compelling or matching your aesthetic. My guest today is Melissa McQuaid who is from Toronto, Canada and has been teaching internationally, with her husband Jeff for many years. My original intention was to have Melissa on my podcast to share some of the great work she’s doing with her grade 3 students in the classroom, in particular, her dedication to creating a classroom culture and environment that is visually rich in meaning and purpose. As I thought about how I was going to do this interview, I couldn’t help but be drawn to not only Melissa, as a teacher, but also her life journey over the past several years as it has really defined and shaped the person she is today. Melissa’s husband, Jeff Woodcock, is our elementary head of school. Although she is very supportive of Jeff’s role as leader of our school, Melissa in her own right has carved out a very purposeful path for herself, as an educator in our school. She has worked very hard to develop a unique teaching style that is focused on visible learning in the classroom in order to accommodate every one of her learners. She carefully models and co-constructs learning with her students on a regular basis and this is one of the many reasons why I feel she is such a great educator. In today’s episode you are not only going to hear about Melissa, as an educator, but more importantly you are going to hear about some very difficult, yet profoundly important experiences that shaped not only her life but also her husband’s life as well. Melissa will explain, in detail, both of these experiences, but it’s the first experience she talks about that specifically taught Melissa how powerful a role community can play in changing a person’s life. As Melissa told this story, I really wanted to go into specific examples of how the community that she and her husband were a part of helped to be a major support for them through a very challenging and difficult time. I got sidetracked during this discussion and wasn’t able to dig deeper into how community specifically supported her and Jeff during this time. However, I still wanted to mention and give a shoutout to the wonderful community that they were a part of in Bonn, Germany many years ago. Melissa’s love of community continues to this day and she is a very active force in bringing people together to celebrate connection, friendship, kindness and joy here at our school here in Saudi Arabia. I want to thank Melissa for sharing her authentic story in this episode. It’s never easy to talk about things that strike so closely to the heart. Melissa’s Bio Melissa McQuaid is an international educator in her eleventh year of teaching, all spent working within the Primary Years Programme. She is passionate about inquiry-based learning and the merits of an education that supports development of the whole child. Walking into her classroom, you will be struck by how well thought out the learning environment is. Her classroom is rich with text, features flexible spaces to support different learners and learning, and is organized with the child’s needs in mind. Developing and nurturing a student’s curiosity and agency are cornerstones of her practice, and have a role in everything she does with learners. When she was 27 years old Melissa experienced a traumatic, life-threatening situation that forced her to rethink her vision of what she had planned for her future. Described by friends and colleagues as “determined and resolute,” her personal story is about over-coming trauma and embracing many obstacles in search of her happiness. Melissa believes that if you can visualize what you want in life, and work towards that vision, anything is possible. Melissa’s time of trauma took place in Germany while she was working at Bonn International School. The rallying and support that came from the BIS community to support her during this difficult time was unforgettable. One way Melissa strives to pay it forward at her current school, The KAUST School,
Melissa Grahek Pierce clearly remembers the morning everything changed for her and her family. It was a snowy Saturday when she discovered her husband dead in their mountainside home.As Melissa began to process her deep grief, she knew that she simply couldn’t fall to pieces. She had two sons to take care of, and they needed her support more than ever. In this inspirational memoir, Melissa details the challenges of transitioning to single motherhood.Several years earlier, Melissa and her husband had adopted their two sons and left Portland, Oregon, seeking a quieter life. As Melissa began struggling with her bereavement, the isolation of her remote community made things even more difficult. The couple had planned to raise their family in the country, but that was one future that would never come to pass.Melissa invites you into the toughest time in her life as she struggled to make decisions that would bring her the support she needed and give her sons the stable environment they craved. Her new book, Filled With Gold, was written with the help of Christine Fadden. It will be a welcome read for any parent struggling with bereavement and the challenges of moving forward. In a delicious mix of serious storytelling, film reviewing and humor, Melissa cuts loose on bad screenwriting AND awful murder as she looks at the life, career and death of writer/director/producer/actor Adrienne Shelly - who was murdered in her New York City office apartment in 2006, just when things were just starting to hit the bigtime for her. Her indy film "Waitress" had just been named to debut at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival when she was killed, and the film has gone on since to become somewhat iconic - it's even become a Broadway musical. But...really...why? As Melissa points out with brilliantly honest humor, "Waitress" just...isn't...very...good... Interweaving the tale of Shelly's senseless death with a devastating film review, this can only be described as something like Roger Ebert at the Morgue. Simultaneously compelling, brilliant, sad and hilarious, as only Melissa can convey.
Nearly killed at birth. Nearly drowned as a toddler. Australian transplant to America, where he becomes a rich South Florida playboy. Stone cold sexual predator. One of the deadliest spree killers in U.S. history. As Melissa explains in this episode, all of those descriptions apply to Christopher Wilder, who in less than three months in early 1984 wrote the swansong to his scabrous 39-year life by abducting and raping (at least) 12 women, killing (at least) 8 of them over a six-week cross-country murder binge that didn't end until...well let's not spoil the ending. Suffice it to say that nothing about the story of "The Beauty Queen Killer," as Wilder was dubbed by the American press, is anything close to beautiful.

If you are an Apple user with a discerning taste for sound, and this will be your first speaker, then go for it! The sound is amazing and the internal microphone recognition is uncontested. Unfortunately, there were more downsides than value for Dave to keep the HomePod. It could not compete with other devices that already suit Dave’s personal assistant needs. There is no Spotify or SiriusXM — it’s Apple Music all the way and will likely remain that way. You can’t make phone calls or manage your calendar from HomePod. As Melissa points out, it really doesn’t seem like it’s a family-friendly product at this time as there are no distinguished voices. While it may currently disappoint on features, the hardware is impeccably crafted giving it great potential to be more than just another assistant in a can. We think HomePod can only get better and we look forward to future iterations. Melissa discusses her recent presentation at her local Mac Users’ Group on the topic of podcatchers. We will keep evaluating these apps for you, our dear listeners, and report our observations so you can make informed choices. Apple's HomePod speaker: Either way late or way early — Yahoo! Ah, yes. Episode 6 of The Walking Dead, also known as the annual reminder that these seasons should not be 16 episodes long. As Melissa put it, this episode was an actual dumpster fire for her, full of whys: Why can we see Trash People ass, but not Rick and Michonne sex? Why was seeing Jadis with no clothes on necessary? Why don't we know this grand plan? Why is Michonne doing this? Why is Jesus doing this? Why is Carl doing this? Why is Rick doing this? Why does Sunday come before Monday? As always, we dive into some listener feedback at the end, which includes theories, snark, spoilers and all manner of fun. Come join us, why don't ya? God created Melissa Crossland to create. She is the owner of The Farmhouse Native, a homeschooling mother, and a voice of wisdom and encouragement to women and girls on their journey of seeking an identity with Christ. Let’s hear her story. Melissa's Testimony (2:33) Melissa grew up in a house that didn’t go to church, but even so, her faith journey began at the age of eight. Even that young she was intrigued be feeling God’s presence. As Melissa puts it, she could feel God “wooing” her. She would catch rides with neighbors to go to church or even hop on the elderly bus that would come by. These people were crucial in helping her get to church and further her relationship with God so that at the age of 11 she could be baptized. Her testimony goes to show that while she didn’t have the “head knowledge” of God Melissa certainly had the “heart knowledge” to understand that God wanted to be in the forefront of her life, that God would never abandon her, and that all God wanted was to live in her heart. On Experiencing the Father’s Love (6:07) Melissa had to overcome many circumstances that were beyond her control on her faith journey, one of those being an abusive father. She has a message for anyone who is stuck in the same place trying to experience a father’s love. That message is that who you are dealing with or what your circumstances and surroundings do not have to define you. They do not have to break you. She has found that often God uses us most when we are at our most broken, weakest, and vulnerable states. It’s through this that his love and compassion and mercy can truly shine if you accept His love into your heart. Encouraging Women & Girls (12:47) Helping young women establish their identity with Christ and come to know God better is a major calling in Melissa’s life. She recalls one moment of quiet time where the Lord clearly spoke to her, “I need you to be who you needed when you were younger for other women and girls.” She works to help open the eyes of women and girls to see themselves as God sees them – His word and His scripture is for absolutely everyone. From One Extreme to Another (16:41) In my own journey, I’ve found myself pushing back at times against the outward notions of health and earning certain things that businesses like mine promote. I noticed I began to change and try to fit into a mold, not because anyone else was putting pressure on me, but because of my own perception of myself and an unsure identity. So I swung to the other side of the spectrum saying things like, “Well I’m not going to do my hair!” Still, this isn’t what I needed either – but the swing between extremes is something Melissa sees young women struggling with as well. She tells women and girls that when you focus on your inner parts first your outer parts will start to benefit greatly as well. They are not separate. Seasons of Rest (20:49) Many of us like to go 90 miles an hour whether it building businesses, relationships, health or family. So when something like an injury, financial hurdle, or death comes along it can be jarring to all of a sudden seems like you’re not moving. But rest is one of God’s gifts to us – there are times where we need to have a quiet and still spirit to fully receive His truth. Melissa wants you to accept these periods in your life and listen. God has a plan for you, and you’ll miss it if you stay so focused on just doing you. Get ln Touch with Melissa The Farmhouse Native
"This is not like any other nutrition program you've ever stumbled across. You have to think about it differently in terms of it being just one part of a lifelong cycle." - Melissa Hartwig Pushing Your Reset Button With Your Health, Habits, & Relationship With Food On this week's podcast, you’ll learn from an exceptional woman who has dedicated her life to driving real transformations in physical and emotional wellness. In this hour, together we’ll discover the connections between your emotions and healthy habits to live your best life and enjoy the process. But there's science behind why we get stuck, and how we can change. It happens when we're hungry and open to the right answers. As Melissa writes in her first book, It Starts With Food: "Ancient signals in a modern world: Food scientists have engineered chemicals in processed foods that light up the reward centers in the brain for a different reason than nature intended- not because they provide vital nutrition, but because they are scientifically designed to stimulate our tastes buds." About Melissa Hartwig Melissa Hartwig is a Certified Sports Nutritionist who specializes in helping people change their relationship with food and create life-long, healthy habits. She is the co-creator of the original Whole30 program, the New York Times bestselling author of The Whole30 and It Starts With Food. "We're often told that it's selfish to take care of yourself first, but I look at it as an act of radical self love. I set boundaries in my life so that I am healthy, happy and so that I flourish in my life and I have more to give to everyone else." - Melissa Hartwig Melissa's New Book: Food Freedom Forever Letting Go of Bad Habits, Guilt, and Anxiety Around Food End the yo-yo dieting cycle… forever. For busy entrepreneurs, the About page of a website is one of the easiest to put off. You might throw a few vital details up there, like your name (always a good place to start) and your credentials, and promise yourself to fill it out later. Maybe you even go back and try adding some details that paint a fuller picture of you as a person. But for many, no matter how hard they work on it, their About page just falls flat. It feels fake, like you’re pretending to be someone you’re not. And that makes sense—we’re all taught never to brag about ourselves…so it feels pretty strange to suddenly write a whole page about why your customers should think you’re so great! That’s why I’m so happy to introduce you to Melissa Cassera. She’s a publicity expert (as well as a screenwriter and an actress), and if you read her own About page, you can see that she is an expert on how to write about yourself in a way that comes out warm, genuine and authentically irresistible. Why Is An About Page Important? Melissa compares the About page to the gown a Hollywood actress wears on the “red carpet.” It’s the way to show off both your importance and your individuality at once, impressing people and engaging them at the same time. The About page is where you give people just enough information about you to want to know more. In other words, you don’t want to give away the whole story on your About page—it’s their intro to all the excitement that awaits if they choose to work with you. For the reader, it should feel like they’ve met you in person, looked you in the eye and shaken your hand. So how do you convey that feeling in words? Think About How You Serve the World Rather than begin by talking about what you do, begin your About page with a line or two about why you do it. This should be the element that guides you through the writing process for your About page. If you get stuck or are wondering if you are including the right kinds of details, ask yourself if what you’ve written paints a picture of the world/society/lifestyle/change that you are trying to build with what you do. Hear more of Melissa's tips on how to make your About page shine. Listen to the full interview here. Make Your Credentials Fun It’s important to list the things that give your business credibility—an advanced degree, an impressive title or certification, a number of years in your field or successful working relationships with noteworthy people. But rather than just list them, Melissa advises having fun with them! Try translating your credentials into an analogy that helps your audience understand what that kind of cred means in your industry. (“I attended the Harvard of health coaching schools” is a good example.) By listing your credentials this way, you can use your bragging rights to gain your readers’ trust and build engagement. EPISODE FREEBIE Get Melissa's Guide: "Craft A Crazy-Impressive About Page" FREE DOWNLOAD Show Your Non-Professional Side Would it surprise you to learn that the part of your About page that really sells you is the part where you talk about something besides work? This, Melissa says, is what really seals the emotional connection with people and allows them to get to know you on a more personal level. Not only that, but this section is what sets you apart from your competition. Nobody else has the same story, the same style, the same lovable quirks and personal motivations that you have. As Melissa says in her "Better Bio Challenge" blog post, "Personal details aren’t 'frivolous' — they anchor you in the reader’s mind and showcase the 'person' behind the 'business.' Try to include at least ONE little detail about your passions, guilty pleasures + personal life, in your bio — and you’ll sparkle off the page, every time." Counterbalance Your Accomplishments If your About page starts feeling a little self-indulgent, Melissa says an easy way to lighten it up is to “show your brushstrokes.” After mentioning the glowing review of your program on the Today Show, drop in a reference to that one time you tried to teach a college class and sat on a whoopee cushion. Details like this help keep you human to your readers, and show them that you’re the same as them—just a little farther along in the journey toward success. Get Melissa's Mad Libs-style template for creating an irresistible About page. Click here to download it instantly! Offer Fun Facts Like the “non-professional life” part of your About page, this part is meant to connect with your ideal audience in a way that nothing else can. Tell a few “secrets” about yourself—that you cover your eyes during the scary parts of movies, that puppy videos make you cry, that your favorite place to work is in your kids’ treehouse. Be forewarned—this will turn off some people. But they are the right people for you to turn off. At the end of the day, Melissa says, your About page is not meant to engage every single person out there. “Your bio or About Page is only intended to turn on your ideal customers and it should be repelling the people that you want to turn off.” Create an “Action Step” By now, your audience has fallen head over heels in love with you…so what’s the next step? Where does the relationship go from here? Melissa says this is the moment to offer them a concrete action step. Offer a free opt-in gift, list links to your five most popular blog posts, tell them to contact you to set up a consultation. Whatever your specific action step is, make it simple and immediate for them to make the next move. Get more of Melissa's suggestions for making your About page actionable. Click here to hear the full interview. The Bottom Line: What Is Fame For? Melissa has a stellar blog post called “Four Questions to Help You Identify What's Not Working in Your Biz...And Make It Better.” In it, she offers this really thought-provoking quotation: “Getting famous is not all it’s cracked up to be and getting featured in the media doesn’t always lead to sales, either.” It’s not enough to have people think you’re “fabulous.” Better sales come from a real relationship with your clients, and the About page is all about relationship building. So while a clear action step is a great way to end your About page, leave the sales messages to your sales page and emails. Focus your About page on building trust and rapport with your target audience, and they will search for ways to work with you.
